[ Judges 10:17 - 11:29 ] - hymn 405 The Spirit of the LORD came on Jephthah. [ JUDGES 11:29 ] He was the doctor who never turned away a patient—even if some couldn’t pay him and even though he himself had experienced rejection from society. In spite of Harold’s outstanding record in his medical studies, no hospital in London hired him because of the color of his skin. So in 1913 he opened his own practice in his home, often treating the poor for free. Dr. Harold Moody spent his life helping those discriminated against, earning him the title “Britain’s Martin Luther King.” Dr. Moody shows that our life need not be determined by the rejection of others. Scripture also shows us this truth in the story of Jephthah. Although a mighty warrior, Jephthah was rejected by his half brothers and driven away from their town. They told him, “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family . . . because you are the son of another woman” (JUDGES 11:2). “So Jephthah fled from his brothers” and settled in another area (V. 3). Although his family rejected him, God didn’t. When an enemy made war on Israel, it was Jephthah that the people turned to for help (VV. 4-6). They said, “Be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites” (V. 6). God used and helped Jephthah to subdue their enemy (VV. 29, 32-33) and to later lead Israel (JUDGES 12:7). When we’re rejected by others, let’s keep trusting and obeying God. It’s how He sees us and what He wants us to do that matters. 17 When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.

18 The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head over all who live in Gilead.”

1 Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute.

2 Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,” they said, “because you are the son of another woman.”

3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a gang of scoundrels gathered around him and followed him.

4 Some time later, when the Ammonites were fighting against Israel,

5 the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.

6 “Come,” they said, “be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.”

7 Jephthah said to them, “Didn't you hate me and drive me from my father's house? Why do you come to me now, when you're in trouble?”

8 The elders of Gilead said to him, “Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head over all of us who live in Gilead.”

29. Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.

18 길르앗 백성과 방백들이 서로 이르되 누가 먼저 나가서 암몬 자손과 싸움을 시작하랴 그가 길르앗 모든 주민의 머리가 되리라 하니라

1 길르앗 사람 입다는 큰 용사였으니 기생이 길르앗에게서 낳은 아들이었고

2 길르앗의 아내도 그의 아들들을 낳았더라 그 아내의 아들들이 자라매 입다를 쫓아내며 그에게 이르되 너는 다른 여인의 자식이니 우리 아버지의 집에서 기업을 잇지 못하리라 한지라

3 이에 입다가 그의 형제들을 피하여 돕 땅에 거주하매 잡류가 그에게로 모여 와서 그와 함께 출입하였더라

4 ○얼마 후에 암몬 자손이 이스라엘을 치려 하니라

5 암몬 자손이 이스라엘을 치려 할 때에 길르앗 장로들이 입다를 데려오려고 돕 땅에 가서

6 입다에게 이르되 우리가 암몬 자손과 싸우려 하니 당신은 와서 우리의 장관이 되라 하니

7 입다가 길르앗 장로들에게 이르되 너희가 전에 나를 미워하여 내 아버지 집에서 쫓아내지 아니하였느냐 이제 너희가 환난을 당하였다고 어찌하여 내게 왔느냐 하니라

8 그러므로 길르앗 장로들이 입다에게 이르되 이제 우리가 당신을 찾아온 것은 우리와 함께 가서 암몬 자손과 싸우게 하려 함이니 그리하면 당신이 우리 길르앗 모든 주민의 머리가 되리라 하매

29. ○이에 여호와의 영이 입다에게 임하시니 입다가 길르앗과 므낫세를 지나서 길르앗의 미스베에 이르고 길르앗의 미스베에서부터 암몬 자손에게로 나아갈 때에
