1When the seventh month came, and the children of Israel were in the towns, the people gathered as one man to Jerusalem. 2 Then arose Jeshua the son of Jozadak, with his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel with his kinsmen, and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. 3 They set the altar in its place, for fear was on them because of the peoples of the lands, and they offered burnt offerings on it to the LORD, burnt offerings morning and evening. 4 And they kept the Feast of Booths, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number according to the rule, as each day required, 5 and after that the regular burnt offerings, the offerings at the new moon and at all the appointed feasts of the LORD, and the offerings of everyone who made a freewill offering to the LORD. 6 From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid. 7 So they gave money to the masons and the carpenters, and food, drink, and oil to the Sidonians and the Tyrians to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, according to the grant that they had from Cyrus king of Persia. 8 Now in the second year after their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak made a beginning, together with the rest of their kinsmen, the priests and the Levites and all who had come to Jerusalem from the captivity. They appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to supervise the work of the house of the LORD. 9 And Jeshua with his sons and his brothers, and Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together supervised the workmen in the house of God, along with the sons of Henadad and the Levites, their sons and brothers. 10 And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the LORD, according to the directions of David king of Israel. 11 And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the LORD, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever toward Israel.” And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. 12 But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people's weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away.
1이스라엘 자손은 여러 마을에 흩어져서 자리를 잡은 지 일곱째 달이 되었을 때에, 일제히 예루살렘으로 모였다. 2 요사닥의 아들 예수아와 그의 동료 제사장들과 스알디엘의 아들 스룹바벨과 그의 동료들이 모여서, 하나님의 사람 모세의 율법에 규정된 대로 번제를 드릴 수 있도록, 이스라엘의 하나님의 제단을 쌓았다. 3 그들은, 그 땅에 사는 백성들이 두렵기는 하지만, 제단이 서 있던 옛 터에 제단을 세우고, 거기에서 아침 저녁으로 주님께 번제를 드렸다. 4 초막절이 되니, 기록된 대로 그 절기를 지켰다. 그들은 또한 규례를 따라서, 날마다 정해진 횟수대로 번제를 드렸다. 5 그런 다음부터, 그들은 늘 드리는 번제 외에도, 초하루 제사 때와, 거룩하게 지켜야 하는 주님의 모든 절기를 맞이할 때와, 주님께 자원예물을 바칠 때마다 번제를 드렸다. 6 주님의 성전 기초는 아직 놓지 않았지만, 그들은 일곱째 달 초하루부터 주님께 번제를 드리기 시작하였다. 7 백성은, 석수와 목수에게는 삯을 주어서 일을 시키고, 시돈 사람과 두로 사람에게는 먹을 것과 마실 것과 기름을 주어서, 페르시아 왕 고레스가 그들에게 허락한 대로, 레바논에서 백향목을 베어 바닷길로 욥바까지 띄워 보내게 하였다. 8 백성이 하나님의 성전 터가 있는 예루살렘으로 돌아온 지 이태째가 되는 해 둘째 달에, 스알디엘의 아들 스룹바벨과 요사닥의 아들 예수아와, 그들의 나머지 동료 제사장과 레위 사람과, 사로잡혀 갔다가 예루살렘으로 돌아온 모든 사람이 공사를 시작하고, 스무 살이 넘은 레위 사람을 주님의 성전 건축 감독으로 세웠다. 9 예수아와 그의 아들들과 친족과, 호다위야의 자손 갓미엘과 그의 아들들이, 한마음 한뜻으로 하나님의 성전 짓는 일을 감독하였다. 레위 사람 헤나닷의 아들과 손자와 친족들도 그들과 함께 일을 하였다. 10 집 짓는 일꾼들이 주님의 성전 기초를 놓을 때에, 예복을 입은 제사장들은 나팔을 들고, 레위 사람 가운데서 아삽 자손들은 자바라를 들고, 이스라엘 왕 다윗이 지시한 대로, 저마다 주님을 찬양하려고 자기의 자리에 섰다. 11 그들은 서로 화답하면서 주님을 찬양하고, 감사의 찬송을 불렀다. “주님은 어지시다.” “언제나 한결같이 이스라엘을 사랑하신다.” 주님의 성전 기초가 놓인 것을 본 온 백성도, 목청껏 소리를 높여서 주님을 찬양하였다. 12 그러나 첫 성전을 본 나이 많은 제사장들과 레위 사람들과 가문의 우두머리들은, 성전 기초가 놓인 것을 보고, 크게 통곡하였다. 또 다른 쪽에서는, 많은 사람들이 기뻐하며 즐거이 노래하였다. 13 환성과 통곡이 한데 뒤섞여서, 소리가 너무나도 크고 시끄러웠다. 그 소리는 멀리서도 들을 수 있었으나, 어느 누구도 환성인지 통곡인지 구별할 수 없었다.
