[ Judges 12:1 - 12:15 ] (Hymn220)

1The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire.”
2 And Jephthah said to them, “I and my people had a great dispute with the Ammonites, and when I called you, you did not save me from their hand.
3 And when I saw that you would not save me, I took my life in my hand and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?”
4 Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.”
5 And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” When he said, “No,”
6 they said to him, “Then say Shibboleth,” and he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time42,000 of the Ephraimites fell.
7 Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city in Gilead.
8 After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.
9 He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters he gave in marriage outside his clan, and thirty daughters he brought in from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
10 Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem.
11 After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.
12 Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
13 After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.
14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel eight years.
15 Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

1에브라임 지파 사람이 싸울 준비를 하고 요단 강을 건너 사본으로 와서, 입다에게 말하였다. “너는 왜 암몬 자손을 치러 건너갈 때에 우리를 불러 같이 가지 않았느냐? 우리가 너와 네 집을 같이 불태워 버리겠다.”
2 그러자 입다가 그들에게 말하였다. “나와 나의 백성이 암몬 자손과 힘겹게 싸울 때에, 내가 너희를 불렀으나, 너희는 나를 그들의 손에서 구하여 주려고 하지 않았다.
3 너희가 구하러 오지 않는 것을 보고, 내가 목숨을 걸고 암몬 자손에게 쳐들어가니, 주님께서는 그들을 나의 손에 넘겨 주셨다. 그런데 어찌하여 오늘 너희가 이렇게 올라와서 나를 대항하여 싸우려고 하느냐?”
4 입다는 길르앗 사람들을 모두 불러모아, 에브라임 지파 사람들과 싸워 무찔렀다. (에브라임 사람들은 평소에 늘 길르앗 사람들을 보고 “너희 길르앗 사람은 본래 에브라임에서 도망친 자들이요, 에브라임과 므낫세에 속한 자들이다!” 하고 말하였다.)
5 길르앗 사람들은 에브라임 사람을 앞질러서 요단 강 나루를 차지하였다. 도망치는 에브라임 사람이 강을 건너가게 해 달라고 하면, 길르앗 사람들은 그에게 에브라임 사람이냐고 물었다. 그가 에브라임 사람이 아니라고 하면,
6 그에게 쉬볼렛이라는 말을 발음하게 하였다. 그러나 그가 그 말을 제대로 발음하지 못하고 시볼렛이라고 발음하면, 길르앗 사람들이 그를 붙들어 요단 강 나루터에서 죽였다. 이렇게 하여 그 때에 죽은 에브라임 사람의 수는 사만 이천이나 되었다.
7 길르앗 사람 입다는 여섯 해 동안 이스라엘의 사사로 있었다. 입다는 죽어서 길르앗에 있는 한 성읍에 묻혔다.
8 그 뒤에 베들레헴의 입산이 이스라엘의 사사가 되었다.
9 그에게는 아들 서른 명과 딸 서른 명이 있었는데, 딸들은 다른 집안으로 출가시키고, 며느리들도 다른 집안에서 서른 명을 데려왔다. 그는 일곱 해 동안 이스라엘의 사사로 있었다.
10 입산은 죽어서 베들레헴에 묻혔다.
11 그 뒤에 스불론 사람 엘론이 이스라엘의 사사가 되었다. 그는 십 년 동안 사사로 있으면서 이스라엘을 다스렸다.
12 스불론 사람 엘론은 죽어서 스불론 땅에 있는 아얄론에 묻혔다.
13 그 뒤에 비라돈 사람 힐렐의 아들 압돈이 이스라엘의 사사가 되었다.
14 그에게는 마흔 명의 아들과 서른 명의 손자가 있었는데, 그들은 나귀 일흔 마리를 타고 다녔다. 그는 여덟 해 동안 사사로 있으면서 이스라엘을 다스렸다.
15 비라돈 사람 힐렐의 아들 압돈은 죽어서 아말렉 사람의 산간지방에 있는 에브라임의 땅 비라돈에 묻혔다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
The tribe of Ephraim complained about Jephthah leaving them out of the war and threatened him. However, unlike Gideon, Jephthah did not appease them but argued back that they had not helped in the fight against Ammon. Eventually, a war broke out between Ephraim and Gilead, and Gilead dealt Ephraim a crushing defeat. The people of Ephraim were discerned by their pronunciation of a single word and killed by the Jordan, resulting in the deaths of countless members of the community. After Jephthah, Ibzan, Elon and Abdon served in succession as the judges of Israel.
에브라임 지파는 입다가 자신들을 전쟁에서 소외시켰다고 불평하며 길르앗을 위협합니다. 그러나 입다는 기드온처럼 그들을 달래지 않고, 오히려 암몬과 싸울 때 돕지 않았다고 맞섭니다. 결국 에브라임과 길르앗 사이에 전쟁이 일어나고, 길르앗은 에브라임을 크게 무찌릅니다. 요단강 나루에서 에브라임 사람들은 발음 하나로 구별되어 죽임을 당하고, 수많은 동족이 목숨을 잃습니다. 입다 이후에는 입산, 엘론, 압돈이 차례로 이스라엘의 사사로 섬깁니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 1-6 The men of Ephraim prioritised their own greed over their community. Rather than fighting for their own people, they pursued their own interests, and instead of strengthening unity as a leading tribe, they weakened the community through quarrels and conflict. Let’s willingly suffer for the sake of our community and withdraw from fights over personal gain.
에브라임은 공동체보다 자기 욕심을 앞세웠습니다. 동족을 위해 싸우기보다 이익이 있는 곳을 좇았고, 중심 지파로서 연합을 세우기보다 시비와 다툼으로 공동체를 약하게 만들었습니다. 공동체를 위해 손해 보는 일에는 기꺼이 나서고, 이익을 다투는 자리에서는 물러서는 사람이 됩시다.

VV. 8-15 A mark of a corrupted leader is their focus on pursuing wealth and power rather than their calling. The accounts of Ibzan, Elon and Abdon highlight the wealth and influence they enjoyed. Let’s pray for our leaders, that we may not abandon God’s calling and seek our own glory.
변질된 지도자의 특징은 사명을 잊고 부와 권력을 누리는 데 마음을 빼앗기는 것입니다. 입산과 엘론과 압돈의 이야기에는 그들이 누린 부와 권력의 흔적이 두드러집니다. 하나님이 맡기신 사명을 내팽개치고 자기 영광을 추구하지 않도록, 지도자들을 위해 기도합시다.

Prayer
Lord, help us to carry out our calling with pure devotion, and the willingness to admit our wrongdoings and forgive others.
