To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
1 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
3 Consider and answer me, O LORD my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
6 I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

1주님, 언제까지 나를 잊으시렵니까? 영원히 잊으시렵니까? 언제까지 나를 외면하시렵니까?
2 언제까지 나의 영혼이 아픔을 견디어야 합니까? 언제까지 고통을 받으며 괴로워하여야 합니까? 언제까지 내 앞에서 의기양양한 원수의 꼴을 보고만 있어야 합니까?
3 나를 굽어살펴 주십시오. 나에게 응답하여 주십시오. 주, 나의 하나님, 내가 죽음의 잠에 빠지지 않게 나의 눈을 뜨게 하여 주십시오.
4 나의 원수가 “내가 그를 이겼다” 하고 말할까 두렵습니다. 내가 흔들릴 때에, 나의 대적들이 기뻐할까 두렵습니다.
5 그러나 나는 주님의 한결같은 사랑을 의지합니다. 주님께서 구원하여 주실 그 때에, 나의 마음은 기쁨에 넘칠 것입니다.
6 주님께서 나를 너그럽게 대하여 주셔서, 내가 주님께 찬송을 드리겠습니다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
The poet, in the face of suffering that made him feel God had forgotten him, repeatedly lamented, “How long?” But rather than dwelling in despair, he prayed for God to consider and restore him so that his enemies would not rejoice. After his prayer, he turned his gaze from his situation onto God’s unchanging love and expressed his conviction that God would grant him joy and salvation by that love. Then, he praised God for not forgetting him.
시인은 하나님이 자신을 잊으신 것 같은 고통 속에 ‘언제까지’를 반복하며 탄식합니다. 그러나 탄식에 머물지 않고 하나님께 나아가 자신을 살피시고 생기를 회복시켜 달라고, 원수들이 기뻐하지 않게 해 달라고 기도합니다. 기도 후 시인은 현실보다 하나님의 변함없는 사랑을 바라보며, 그 사랑으로 구원과 기쁨을 주실 것을 확신합니다. 그리고 자신을 잊지 않으시는 하나님을 찬양합니다.

Who is God?
Vv. 5, 6 God loves us steadfastly and deals with us bountifully. When we face suffering, it is easy to doubt God’s love. God sometimes smooths our paths by his love, but he also refines us through love. God, who is eternal and faithful, will not let the hopes of those who rely on him today go to waste.
우리를 한결같이 사랑하시고, 너그럽게 대하십니다. 고통스러운 현실을 마주하면 하나님의 사랑에 의심이 들기도 합니다. 하나님은 사랑으로 내 길을 평탄하게도 하시지만, 사랑으로 나를 단련하기도 하십니다. 영원히 살아 계시고 신실하신 주님은 오늘도 그분을 의지하는 자들의 기대를 결코 헛되게 하지 않으실 것입니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 1-6 Prayer is a searchlight that allows us to discover God’s love. The poet lamented in the face of affliction, but when he prayed to God about his situation, he saw God’s unchanging love flowing steadfastly in the background. Even if we pray, our situation may remain unchanged. But when we see God’s love for us, we will be changed.
기도는 하나님의 사랑을 발견하는 탐조등입니다. 시인은 고통스러운 현실에 탄식하다가 하나님께 기도하자 현실 이면에 유유히 흐르는 하나님의 변함없는 사랑을 보았습니다. 기도해도 눈앞의 상황은 그대로일 수 있습니다. 그렇지만 하나님의 사랑을 본 내 마음은 이전과 같지 않을 것입니다.

Lord, light up our darkened eyes so that we may witness your works and ability daily.
