Summing up


[ Genesis 43:1 - 43:15 ] (Hymn543)

1Now the famine was severe in the land.
2 And when they had eaten the grain that they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little food.”
3 But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’
4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.
5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’”
6 Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly as to tell the man that you had another brother?”
7 They replied, “The man questioned us carefully about ourselves and our kindred, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ What we told him was in answer to these questions. Could we in any way know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”
8 And Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones.
9 I will be a pledge of his safety. From my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever.
10 If we had not delayed, we would now have returned twice.”
11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry a present down to the man, a little balm and a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds.
12 Take double the money with you. Carry back with you the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight.
13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man.
14 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”
15 So the men took this present, and they took double the money with them, and Benjamin. They arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

1그 땅에 기근이 더욱 심해 갔다.
2 그들이 이집트에서 가지고 온 곡식이 다 떨어졌을 때에, 아버지가 아들들에게 말하였다. “다시 가서, 먹거리를 조금 더 사오너라.”
3 유다가 아버지에게 말하였다. “그 사람이 우리에게 엄하게 경고하면서 ‘너희가 막내아우를 데리고 오지 않으면, 다시는 나의 얼굴을 못 볼 것이다’ 하고 말하였습니다.
4 우리가 막내를 데리고 함께 가게 아버지께서 허락하여 주시면, 다시 가서 아버지께서 잡수실 것을 사오겠습니다.
5 그러나 아버지께서 막내를 보낼 수 없다고 하시면, 우리는 갈 수 없습니다. 그분이 우리에게 말하기를 ‘너희가 막내아우를 데리고 오지 않으면, 다시는 나의 얼굴을 못 볼 것이다’ 하였기 때문입니다.”
6 이스라엘이 자식들을 탓하였다. “어찌하려고 너희는, 아우가 있다는 말을 그 사람에게 해서, 나를 이렇게도 괴롭히느냐?”
7 그들이 대답하였다. “그 사람은 우리와 우리 가족에 관하여서 낱낱이 캐물었습니다. ‘너희 아버지가 살아 계시냐?’ 하고 묻기도 하고, 또 ‘다른 형제가 더 있느냐?’ 하고 묻기도 하였습니다. 우리는 그저, 그가 묻는 대로 대답하였을 뿐입니다. 그가 우리의 아우를 그리로 데리고 오라고 말할 것이라고는 상상도 하지 못하였습니다.”
8 유다가 아버지 이스라엘에게 말하였다. “제가 막내를 데리고 가게 해주십시오. 그러면 우리가 곧 떠나겠습니다. 그렇게 하여야, 우리도, 아버지도, 우리의 어린 것들도, 죽지 않고 살 수 있을 것입니다.
9 제가 그 아이의 안전을 책임지겠습니다. 아버지께서는, 그 아이에 대해서는, 저에게 책임을 물어 주십시오. 제가 그 아이를 아버지께로 다시 데리고 와서 아버지 앞에 세우지 못한다면, 그 죄를 제가 평생 달게 받겠습니다.
10 우리가 이렇게 머뭇거리고 있지 않았으면, 벌써 두 번도 더 다녀왔을 것입니다.”
11 아버지 이스라엘이 아들들에게 말하였다. “꼭 그렇게 해야만 한다면, 이렇게 하도록 하여라. 이 땅에서 나는 것 가운데 가장 좋은 토산물을 너희 그릇에 담아 가지고 가서, 그 사람에게 선물로 드리도록 하여라. 유향과 꿀을 얼마쯤 담고, 향품과 몰약과 유향나무 열매와 감복숭아를 담아라.
12 돈도 두 배를 가지고 가거라. 너희 자루 아귀에 담겨 돌아온 돈은 되돌려 주어야 한다. 아마도 그것은 실수였을 것이다.
13 너희 아우를 데리고, 어서 그 사람에게로 가거라.
14 너희들이 그 사람 앞에 설 때에, 전능하신 하나님이 그 사람을 감동시키셔서, 너희에게 자비를 베풀게 해주시기를 빌 뿐이다. 그가 거기에 남아 있는 아이와 베냐민도 너희와 함께 돌려보내 준다면, 더 바랄 것이 없겠다. 자식들을 잃게 되면 잃는 것이지, 난들 어떻게 하겠느냐?”
15 사람들은 선물을 꾸리고, 돈도 갑절을 지니고, 베냐민을 데리고 급히 이집트로 가서, 요셉 앞에 섰다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
As the famine worsened and food grew even more scarce, Jacob told his sons to return to Egypt to buy grain. Judah reminded him of the prime minister’s warning that they could only return if Jacob sent Benjamin with them. He persuaded Jacob by vowing to take responsibility for Benjamin for the sake of his family’s livelihood (vv. 1-10). Jacob, knowing there was no other way, agreed to send Benjamin and prepared gifts and double the money to soften the prime minister’s heart. Jacob sought the grace and mercy of God Almighty and entrusted everything to God’s sovereignty (vv. 11-15).
기근이 심해져 양식이 떨어지자 야곱은 아들들에게 다시 이집트로 가서 곡식을 사 오라고 합니다. 유다는 총리의 경고를 상기시키며 베냐민을 보내 주어야만 갈 수 있다고 하며, 가족의 생명을 위해 자신이 책임지고 베냐민을 데려오겠다고 설득합니다(1–10절). 다른 방법이 없음을 안 야곱은 베냐민을 보내기로 결심하고, 총리의 마음을 누그러뜨릴 선물과 두 배의 돈을 준비하게 합니다. 야곱은 전능하신 하나님께 은혜와 자비를 구하며 모든 일을 하나님의 주권에 맡깁니다(11–15절).

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 8-9 We cannot live if our community does not live; the entire community must live for us to live. Jacob couldn’t protect just Benjamin, and Jacob’s sons couldn’t abandon Benjamin as they had abandoned Joseph. They had to live together or die together, highlighting their bond. Since we must all live together, our lives cannot be fully separated.
함께 살지 못하면 나도 살지 못하고, 내가 살려면 함께 살아야 합니다. 야곱은 베냐민만 보호할 수도 없었고, 야곱의 아들들은 베냐민을 요셉처럼 버릴 수도 없었습니다. 모두 살거나 모두 죽는 길밖에 없는 상황에서 그들의 연대감은 점점 선명해졌습니다. 함께 살아가는 존재 간에 완전한 분리는 없습니다.

V. 14 Amazing things happen when we entrust our lives to God. Once Jacob laid down his stubbornness, God allowed him to reunite not just with Simeon, the son who had been left behind, but also with Joseph, the other son who had been left behind. When we encounter trials that we cannot endure, let’s put our faith in God and entrust the key to our lives to him.
삶의 주도권을 하나님께 넘길 때 놀라운 일이 일어납니다. 야곱이 자기 고집을 버리자 하나님은 ‘거기에 남아 있는 아이’인 시므온뿐만 아니라 ‘거기에 남아 있는 또 다른 아이’인 요셉까지 만나게 하셨습니다. 감당할 수 없는 인생의 풍랑을 만날 때 하나님을 믿고 삶의 키를 하나님께 맡기십시오.

Lord, help me to lay down my stubbornness and greed in the face of danger and depend only on you.
