Summing up


[ Genesis 34:18 - 34:31 ] (Hymn414)

18Their words pleased Hamor and Hamor's son Shechem.
19 And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob's daughter. Now he was the most honored of all his father's house.
20 So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
21 “These men are at peace with us; let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters as wives, and let us give them our daughters.
22 Only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us to become one people—when every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.
23 Will not their livestock, their property and all their beasts be ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will dwell with us.”
24 And all who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
25 On the third day, when they were sore, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and came against the city while it felt secure and killed all the males.
26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword and took Dinah out of Shechem's house and went away.
27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28 They took their flocks and their herds, their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field.
29 All their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and plundered.
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me stink to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.”
31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?”

18하몰과 그의 아들 세겜은, 야곱의 아들들이 내놓은 제안을 좋게 여겼다.
19 그래서 그 젊은이는 시간을 지체하지 않고, 그들이 제안한 것을 실천으로 옮겼다. 그만큼 그는 야곱의 딸을 좋아하였다. 세겜은 자기 아버지의 집안에서 가장 존귀한 인물이었다.
20 하몰과 그의 아들 세겜이 성문께로 가서, 그들의 성읍 사람들에게 말하였다.
21 “이 사람들이 우리에게 우호적입니다. 그러니 그들이 우리 땅에서 살면서, 우리와 함께 물건을 서로 사고팔게 합시다. 이 땅은 그들을 받아들일 수 있을 만큼 넓습니다. 우리가 그들의 딸들과 결혼할 수 있게 하고, 그들은 우리의 딸들과 결혼할 수 있게 합시다.
22 그러나 이 사람들이 기꺼이 우리와 한 겨레가 되어서, 우리와 함께 사는 데는, 조건이 하나 있습니다. 그들이 할례를 받는 것처럼, 우리 쪽 남자들이 모두 할례를 받아야 한다는 것입니다.
23 그렇게 하면, 그들의 양 떼와 재산과 집짐승이 모두 우리의 것이 되지 않겠습니까? 다만, 그들이 우리에게 요구하는 것은 그대로 합시다. 우리가 그렇게 할례를 받으면, 그들이 우리와 함께 살 것입니다.”
24 그 성읍의 모든 장정이, 하몰과 그의 아들 세겜이 제안한 것을 좋게 여겼다. 그래서 그 장정들은 모두 할례를 받았다.
25 사흘 뒤에, 장정 모두가 아직 상처가 아물지 않아서 아파하고 있을 때에, 야곱의 아들들 곧 디나의 친오라버니들인 시므온과 레위가, 칼을 들고 성읍으로 쳐들어가서, 순식간에 남자들을 모조리 죽였다.
26 그들은 하몰과 그의 아들 세겜도 칼로 쳐서 죽이고, 세겜의 집에 있는 디나를 데려왔다.
27 야곱의 다른 아들들은, 죽은 시체에 달려들어서 털고, 그들의 누이가 욕을 본 그 성읍을 약탈하였다.
28 그들은, 양과 소와 나귀와 성 안에 있는 것과 성 바깥들에 있는 것과
29 모든 재산을 빼앗고, 어린 것들과 아낙네들을 사로잡고, 집 안에 있는 물건을 다 약탈하였다.
30 일이 이쯤 되니, 야곱이 시므온과 레위를 나무랐다. “너희는 나를 오히려 더 어렵게 만들었다. 이제 가나안 사람이나, 브리스 사람이나, 이 땅에 사는 모든 사람이, 나를 사귀지도 못할 추한 인간이라고 여길 게 아니냐? 우리는 수가 적은데, 그들이 합세해서, 나를 치고, 나를 죽이면, 나와 나의 집안이 다 몰살당할 수밖에 없지 않느냐?”
31 그들이 대답하였다. “그가 우리 누이를 창녀 다루듯이 하는 데도, 그대로 두라는 말입니까?”

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
Jacob’s sons, especially Simeon and Levi, were enraged not just by Shechem’s crime, but also by their father’s silence. They plotted revenge by using the trick of proposing circumcision as a condition for the marriage (v. 13), and an unsuspecting Shechem was circumcised with all his men (vv. 18-24). Before the wounds could heal, Simeon and Levi stormed the city and killed all the men. With the help of their brothers, they also plundered the city’s wealth and captured the families (vv. 25-29). Jacob, fearing retaliation, belatedly rebuked his sons, but he had already lost his authority as a father (vv. 30-31).
야곱의 아들들, 특히 시므온과 레위는 세겜의 범죄뿐 아니라 침묵하는 아버지에게도 분노했을 것입니다. 그들은 할례를 결혼 조건으로 내세우는 속임수로 복수를 계획했고(13절), 이를 모른 채 세겜의 모든 남자는 할례를 받습니다(18–24절). 상처가 아물기 전 시므온과 레위는 성을 기습해 모든 남자를 죽였고, 다른 아들들도 가세해 재산을 약탈하며 가족들을 사로잡습니다(25–29절). 야곱은 뒤늦게 보복을 두려워하며 꾸짖지만, 이미 아버지의 권위를 잃었습니다(30–31절).

What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 18-31 Awful things happen when we forget God. In Genesis Chapter 34, God isn’t mentioned once, and all kinds of abominable things take place, from rape to kidnapping, fraud, slaughter, and plunder. This shows the tragedy of a life and a world that has forgotten God. Like the poet who wrote, “I have stored up your words in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Ps. 119:11), let’s not forget God’s Word.
우리가 하나님을 잊을 때 끔찍한 일들이 일어납니다. 창세기 34장에서 하나님이 한 번도 언급되지 않는 동안, 강간, 납치, 사기, 살육, 약탈 등의 흉악한 범죄가 발생했습니다. 이는 하나님 없는 인생, 하나님을 잃어버린 사회의 비참함을 보여 줍니다. ‘범죄하지 않으려고 주님의 말씀을 마음 속에 깊이 간직한’(시 119:11) 시인처럼, 말씀을 잊지 마십시오.

Vv. 25-31 No matter how strong the reasoning, nothing justifies sin. Dinah’s older brothers had a right to be furious at Shechem for defiling and kidnapping their sister, but this did not justify their slaughter and plunder of the people of Shechem. Let’s not repay evil with greater evil but overcome it with good (Rom. 12:21).
아무리 옳은 명분이 있어도 죄를 정당화할 순 없습니다. 오빠로서 세겜이 누이 디나를 욕보이고 납치한 것에 대해 분노할 순 있지만, 그렇다고 세겜 사람들을 살육하고 약탈한 것을 정당화할 순 없습니다. 악을 더 큰 악으로 갚지 말고, 선으로 악을 이기십시오(롬 12:21).
