1Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. 2 The LORD said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then22,000 of the people returned, and10,000 remained. 4 And the LORD said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. 7 And the LORD said to Gideon, “With the300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” 8 So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. 9 That same night the LORD said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant. 11 And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. 12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance. 13 When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” 14 And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.”
1여룹바알이라고도 하는 기드온과 그가 거느리는 모든 군대가 일찍 일어나, 하롯이라는 샘 곁에 진을 쳤는데, 미디안의 진은 거기에서 북쪽 골짜기에 있는 모레 언덕에 있었다. 2 주님께서 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. “네가 거느린 군대의 수가 너무 많다. 이대로는 내가 미디안 사람들을 네가 거느린 군대의 손에 넘겨 주지 않겠다. 이스라엘 백성이 나를 제쳐놓고서, 제가 힘이 세어서 이긴 줄 알고 스스로 자랑할까 염려된다. 3 그러니 너는 이제라도 그들에게 말하여, 두려워서 떨리는 사람은 누구든지, 길르앗 산을 떠나서 돌아가게 하여라.” 기드온이 두려워서 떠는 자를 돌아가게 하니, 그들 가운데서 이만 이천 명이 돌아가고 만 명이 남았다. 4 주님께서 또 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. “군인이 아직도 많다. 그들을 물가로 데리고 내려가거라. 내가 너를 도와 거기에서 그들을 시험하여 보겠다. 내가 너에게 ‘이 사람이 너와 함께 나갈 사람’이라 일러주면, 너는 그 사람을 데리고 가거라. 내가 또 너에게 ‘이 사람은 너와 함께 나가지 못할 사람’이라 일러주면, 너는 그 사람은 데리고 가지 말아라.” 5 기드온이 군대를 물가로 데리고 내려가니, 주님께서 기드온에게 이렇게 일러주셨다. “개가 핥는 것처럼 혀로 물을 핥는 사람과 무릎을 꿇고 물을 마시는 사람을 모두 구별하여 세워라.” 6 손으로 물을 움켜 입에 대고 핥는 사람의 수가 삼백 명이었고, 그 밖의 백성들은 다 무릎을 꿇고 물을 마셨다. 7 주님께서 기드온에게 이르셨다. “물을 핥아먹은 삼백 명으로 너희를 구원하겠다. 미디안 사람들을 너의 손에 넘겨주겠다. 나머지 군인은 모두 온 곳으로 돌려보내라.” 8 그래서 기드온은 물을 핥아먹은 삼백 명만 남겨 두고 나머지 이스라엘 군대는 각자의 집으로 돌려보냈다. 남은 삼백 명은 돌아가는 군인들에게서 식량과 나팔을 넘겨받았다. 미디안의 진은 그 아래 골짜기에 있었다. 9 그 날 밤 주님께서 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. “너는 일어나서 적진으로 쳐내려가거라. 내가 그들을 너의 손에 넘겨 주겠다. 10 네가 쳐내려가기가 두려우면, 너의 부하 부라와 함께 먼저 적진으로 내려가 보아라. 11 그리고 적들이 무슨 말을 하는지 들어보면, 네가 적진으로 쳐내려갈 용기를 얻을 것이다.” 그는 자기의 부하 부라와 함께 적진의 끝으로 내려갔다. 12 미디안 사람과 아말렉 사람과 사막 부족들이 메뚜기 떼처럼 그 골짜기에 수없이 널려 있었으며, 그들의 낙타도 바닷가의 모래알처럼 헤아릴 수 없이 많았다. 13 기드온이 그 곳에 이르렀을 때에, 마침 한 병사가 자기가 꾼 꿈 이야기를 친구에게 하고 있었다. “내가 꿈을 꾸었는데, 보리빵 한 덩어리가 미디안 진으로 굴러 들어와 장막에 이르러서 그 장막을 쳐서 뒤엎으니, 그만 막이 쓰러지고 말았다네” 하고 말하니까, 14 꿈 이야기를 들은 그 친구가 말하였다. “그것은 다름이 아니라, 이스라엘 사람 요아스의 아들인 기드온의 칼이 틀림없네. 하나님이 미디안과 그 모든 진을 그의 손에 넘기신다는 것일세.”
