[ Isaiah 39:1 - 39:8 ] (Hymn321)

1At that time Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent envoys with letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that he had been sick and had recovered.
2 And Hezekiah welcomed them gladly. And he showed them his treasure house, the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious oil, his whole armory, all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his house or in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them.
3 Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah, and said to him, “What did these men say? And from where did they come to you?” Hezekiah said, “They have come to me from a far country, from Babylon.”
4 He said, “What have they seen in your house?” Hezekiah answered, “They have seen all that is in my house. There is nothing in my storehouses that I did not show them.”
5 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the LORD of hosts:
6 Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left, says the LORD.
7 And some of your own sons, who will come from you, whom you will father, shall be taken away, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”
8 Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “There will be peace and security in my days.”

1그 때에 발라단의 아들 바빌로니아 왕 므로닥발라단이, 히스기야가 병들었다가 나았다는 소식을 듣고서, 그에게 친서와 예물을 보내 왔다.
2 히스기야는 그들을 반가이 맞아들이고, 보물 창고에 있는 은과 금과 향료와 향유와, 무기고와 창고 안에 있는 모든 것을, 다 보여 주었다. 히스기야는 그들에게, 궁궐과 나라 안에 있는 것을 하나도 빠짐없이 다 보여 주었다.
3 그 때에 예언자 이사야가 히스기야 왕에게 와서 물었다. “이 사람들이 무슨 말을 하였습니까? 이 사람들은 어디에서 온 사람들입니까?” 히스기야가 대답하였다. “그들은 저 먼 나라 바빌로니아에서 온 사람들이오.”
4 이사야가 또 물었다. “그들이 임금님의 궁궐에서 무엇을 보았습니까?” 히스기야가 대답하였다. “그들은 나의 궁궐 안에 있는 모든 것을 보았고, 나의 창고에 있는 것 가운데, 그들에게 보여 주지 않은 것이 하나도 없소.”
5 이사야가 히스기야에게 말하였다. “만군의 주님의 말씀을 들으십시오.
6 ‘그 날이 다가오고 있다. 그 날이 오면, 너의 왕궁 안에 있는 모든 것과 오늘까지 너의 조상이 저장하여 놓은 모든 보물이, 남김없이 바빌론으로 옮겨 갈 것이다.’ 주님께서 또 말씀하십니다.
7 ‘너에게서 태어날 아들 가운데서 더러는 포로로 끌려가서, 바빌론 왕궁의 환관이 될 것이다.’”
8 히스기야가 이사야에게 말하였다. “그대가 전하여 준 주님의 말씀은 지당한 말씀이오.” 히스기야는, 자기가 살아 있는 동안만이라도 평화와 안정이 계속되면 다행이라고 생각하였다.

Thinking & Understanding
Marodach-baladan, king of Babylon, heard of Hezekiah’s recovery and sent envoys, and Hezekiah showed them all the treasures and weapons in his house without reservation. Isaiah relayed God’s Word to Hezekiah; all the treasures of Judah would be carried to Babylon, and the king’s descendants would be taken to Babylon and turned into eunuchs. Hezekiah acknowledged his wrongdoing, accepted his punishment, and thanked God for the delayed judgement.
바빌로니아 왕 므로닥발라단이 히스기야의 회복 소식을 듣고 사절단을 보내자, 히스기야는 경계 없이 궁궐의 보물과 무기들을 모두 보여 줍니다. 이에 이사야는 유다의 모든 보물이 바빌론으로 옮겨지고 왕의 후손들이 포로로 끌려가 환관이 될 것이라는 하나님의 말씀을 전합니다. 히스기야는 자신의 잘못을 인정하고 그 벌을 받아들이며, 심판이 연기된 것에 감사드립니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 2-4 Instead of boasting about[IK47.1] God, who had healed him, Hezekiah hastily showed off his possessions. Even though he relied on God, he also believed that he had gained a new ally in Babylon. When we fail to rely fully on God alone, doubt and faithlessness permeate the gaps. Am I fully relying only on God?
히스기야는 자신의 병을 낫게 하신 하나님을 자랑하지 않고, 소유하고 있는 보물을 자랑하기에 급급했습니다. 하나님을 의지했지만, 동시에 바빌론이라는 새로운 우군을 얻었다고 생각했을 것입니다. 하나님을 전적으로 의지하지 못한 빈틈에는 늘 의심과 불신이 파고듭니다. 나는 하나님만 전적으로 의지하고 있습니까?

Vv. 5-8 Hezekiah wept and prayed for his own life, but remained silent about the tears his descendants would shed. When faith is confined within the walls of “self,” we lose sight of the future and our neighbors. Let us reflect on whether today’s peace is built upon the sacrifices of future generations, and begin to seriously consider how we can wipe away their tears.
히스기야는 자신의 생명을 위해서는 통곡하며 기도했지만, 후손들이 흘릴 눈물에 대해서는 침묵합니다. 신앙이 '나'라는 울타리에 갇히면 미래와 이웃은 보이지 않게 됩니다. 오늘의 평안이 미래 세대의 희생을 담보로 한 것은 아닌지 돌아보고, 그들의 눈물을 닦아줄 실질적 고민을 시작합시다.
