[ Ezra 4:1 - 4:10 ] (Hymn342)

1Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to the LORD, the God of Israel,
2 they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers' houses and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we worship your God as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria who brought us here.”
3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers' houses in Israel said to them, “You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we alone will build to the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”
4 Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build
5 and bribed counselors against them to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7 In the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam and Mithredath and Tabeel and the rest of their associates wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated.
8 Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows:
9 Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates, the judges, the governors, the officials, the Persians, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites,
10 and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar deported and settled in the cities of Samaria and in the rest of the province Beyond the River.

1유다와 베냐민의 대적은, 사로잡혀 갔다가 돌아온 사람들이 주 이스라엘의 하나님의 성전을 짓고 있다는 말을 듣고서,
2 스룹바벨과 각 가문의 우두머리들에게 와서 말하였다. “앗시리아 왕 에살핫돈이 우리를 여기로 데려왔을 때부터 이제까지, 우리도 당신들과 마찬가지로 당신들의 하나님을 섬기며, 줄곧 제사를 드려 왔으니, 우리도 당신들과 함께 성전을 짓도록 하여 주시오.”
3 스룹바벨과 예수아와 그 밖에 이스라엘 각 가문의 우두머리들이 그들에게 대답하였다. “당신들과는 관계가 없는 일이오. 주 우리의 하나님께 성전을 지어 드리는 것은, 우리가 할 일이오. 페르시아 왕 고레스가 우리에게 명령한 대로, 주 이스라엘의 하나님의 성전을 짓는 것은, 오로지 우리가 할 일이오.”
4 이 말을 들은 그 땅 백성은 성전 짓는 일을 방해하여, 유다 백성의 사기를 떨어뜨렸다.
5 그들은 고문관들을 매수하면서까지 성전을 짓지 못하게 하였다. 이러한 방해는, 페르시아 왕 고레스가 다스리던 모든 기간뿐만 아니라, 페르시아 왕 다리우스가 통치하던 때까지 이어졌다.
6 아하수에로가 왕위에 오르니, 대적들은 유다 주민과 예루살렘 주민을 고발하는 글을 올렸다.
7 아닥사스다 때에도 비슬람과 미드르닷과 다브엘과 그 밖의 동료 관리들이 페르시아의 아닥사스다 왕에게 글을 올렸다. 그 편지는 아람 글로 적었고 번역이 되었다.
8 르훔 사령관과 심새 서기관은 예루살렘 주민을 고발하는 상소문을 아닥사스다 왕에게 썼다.
9 그 때에 상소를 올린 사람은, 르훔 사령관과 심새 서기관과 동료들과 그 밖에 디나 사람과 아바삿 사람과 다블래 사람과 아바새 사람과 아렉 사람과 바빌로니아 사람과 수산 사람과 데해 사람과 엘람 사람과,
10 귀족 오스납발이 사마리아의 여러 성과 유프라테스 강 서쪽 여러 지방에 이주시킨 민족들이다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
Foreigners who had been resettled around Jerusalem by King Esarhaddon of Assyria had claimed to worship God and asked to participate in the reconstruction of the temple. However, Zerubbabel and the leaders of Israel firmly rejected their request to preserve the purity of their faith. Once rejected, these outsiders revealed their true motives: they persistently obstructed the construction of the temple because they wanted to maintain their own privileged status in Jerusalem. During the reigns of Cyrus and Darius, they bribed officials and during the reigns of Ahasuerus and Artaxerxes, they greatly delayed the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem through false accusations (vv. 1-10).
예루살렘 주변에는 앗시리아 왕 에살핫돈의 이주 정책으로 정착한 이방인들이 살고 있습니다. 그들은 자신들도 하나님을 섬긴다며 성전 건축에 참여하게 해 달라고 요청합니다. 그러나 총독 스룹바벨과 이스라엘의 지도자들은 신앙의 순수성을 지키기 위해 그들의 제안을 단호히 거절합니다. 그러자 그들은 예루살렘 지역에서의 기득권을 지키려는 본심을 드러내며 집요하게 성전 건축을 방해합니다. 고레스와 다리우스 시대에는 뇌물로 관리들을 매수했고, 아하수에로와 아닥사스다 시대에는 근거 없는 고발을 통해 예루살렘 성벽 재건을 저지합니다(1-10절).
What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 1-3 Maintaining one's faith identity requires perseverance and determination. The hands extended by those with a false faith may have seemed helpful, but they were in fact obstructive, seeking to undermine the temple construction from the very foundation. The sweeter the offer of help, the more carefully we must discern whether it is genuine, and if necessary, we must firmly refuse such offers. What are the things I should stop doing in order to maintain my faith identity?
신앙의 정체성을 지키는 일에는 철저함과 단호함이 필요합니다. 혼합주의 신앙을 가진 자들이 내민 손은 돕는 손처럼 보이지만, 실상은 성전 건축을 뿌리부터 흔들려는 방해의 손입니다. 제안이 달콤할수록 더욱 신중하게 분별하고, 필요한 경우 단호히 거절해야 합니다. 지금 내 삶에서 신앙의 정체성을 지키기 위해 멈춰야 할 것은 무엇입니까?

Vv. 1-10 The building of the temple faced systematic and persistent opposition. Wherever God’s people seek to establish his kingdom, opposition and hindrance inevitably follow. Therefore, it is not unusual for Christians to suffer hardship ( 1 Pet. 4:12, 16). We should never be ashamed of the difficulties we face. What we should be ashamed of is turning away from God or compromising his will.
성전 건축은 체계적이고 지속적인 방해를 받습니다. 하나님의 백성이 하나님의 나라를 세우는 곳에는 언제나 반대와 훼방이 따릅니다. 그러므로 그리스도인이 고난을 겪는 일은 이상한 일이 아닙니다 (벧전 4:12, 16). 우리가 진정 부끄러워해야 할 것은 고난에 대한 두려움 때문에 하나님의 뜻을 외면하거나 타협하는 것입니다.

Dear God, grant us the faith to live holy lives without stumbling when suffering comes.
