1Sarah lived127 years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. 2 And Sarah died at Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. 3 And Abraham rose up from before his dead and said to the Hittites, 4 “I am a sojourner and foreigner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.” 5 The Hittites answered Abraham, 6 “Hear us, my lord; you are a prince of God among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will withhold from you his tomb to hinder you from burying your dead.” 7 Abraham rose and bowed to the Hittites, the people of the land. 8 And he said to them, “If you are willing that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me and entreat for me Ephron the son of Zohar, 9 that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he owns; it is at the end of his field. For the full price let him give it to me in your presence as property for a burying place.” 10 Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites, and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites, of all who went in at the gate of his city, 11 “No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the sight of the sons of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.” 12 Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land. 13 And he said to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, “But if you will, hear me: I give the price of the field. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there.” 14 Ephron answered Abraham, 15 “My lord, listen to me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.” 16 Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver that he had named in the hearing of the Hittites, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weights current among the merchants. 17 So the field of Ephron in Machpelah, which was to the east of Mamre, the field with the cave that was in it and all the trees that were in the field, throughout its whole area, was made over 18 to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the Hittites, before all who went in at the gate of his city. 19 After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah east of Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20 The field and the cave that is in it were made over to Abraham as property for a burying place by the Hittites.
1사라는 백 년 하고도 스물일곱 해를 더 살았다. 이것이 그가 누린 햇수이다. 2 그는 가나안 땅 기럇아르바 곧 헤브론에서 눈을 감았다. 아브라함이 가서, 사라를 생각하면서, 곡을 하며 울었다. 3 아브라함은 죽은 아내 옆에서 물러나와서, 헷 사람에게로 가서 말하였다. 4 “나는 여러분 가운데서 나그네로, 떠돌이로 살고 있습니다. 죽은 나의 아내를 묻으려고 하는데, 무덤으로 쓸 땅을 여러분들에게서 좀 살 수 있게 해주시기를 바랍니다.” 5 헷 족속 사람들이 아브라함에게 대답하였다. 6 “어른께서는 우리가 하는 말을 들어 보시기 바랍니다. 어른은, 하나님이 우리 가운데 세우신 지도자이십니다. 우리의 묘지에서 가장 좋은 곳을 골라서 고인을 모시기 바랍니다. 어른께서 고인의 묘지로 쓰시겠다고 하면, 우리 가운데서 그것이 자기의 묘 자리라고 해서 거절할 사람은 없습니다.” 7 아브라함이 일어나서, 그 땅 사람들, 곧 헷 사람들에게 큰 절을 하고, 8 그들에게 말하였다. “여러분이, 내가 나의 아내를 이곳에다 묻을 수 있게 해주시려면, 나의 청을 들어 주시고, 나를 대신해서, 소할의 아들 에브론에게 말을 전해 주시기 바랍니다. 9 그가 자기의 밭머리에 가지고 있는 막벨라 굴을 나에게 팔도록 주선하여 주시기 바랍니다. 값은 넉넉하게 쳐서 드릴 터이니, 내가 그 굴을 사서, 여러분 앞에서 그것을 우리 묘지로 삼도록 해주시기 바랍니다.” 10 헷 사람 에브론이 마침 헷 사람들 틈에 앉아 있다가, 이 말을 듣고, 성문 위에 마을 회관에 앉아 있는 모든 헷 사람들이 듣는 데서 아브라함에게 대답하였다. 11 “그러실 필요가 없습니다. 제가 드리는 말씀을 들어 보시기 바랍니다. 제가 그 밭을 드리겠습니다. 거기에 있는 굴도 드리겠습니다. 나의 백성이 보는 앞에서, 제가 그것을 드리겠습니다. 거기에다가 돌아가신 부인을 안장하시기 바랍니다.” 12 아브라함이 다시 한 번 그 땅 사람들에게 큰 절을 하고, 13 그들이 듣는 데서 에브론에게 말하였다. “좋게 여기신다면, 나의 말을 들으시기 바랍니다. 그 밭 값을 드리겠습니다. 저에게서 그 값을 받으셔야만, 내가 나의 아내를 거기에 묻을 수 있습니다.” 14 에브론이 아브라함에게 대답하였다. 15 “저의 말을 들어 보시기 바랍니다. 그 땅값을 친다면, 은 사백 세겔은 됩니다. 그러나 어른과 저 사이에 무슨 거래를 하겠습니까? 거기에다가 그냥 돌아가신 부인을 안장하시기 바랍니다.” 16 아브라함은 에브론의 말을 따라서, 헷 사람들이 듣는 데서, 에브론이 밝힌 밭 값으로, 상인들 사이에서 통용되는 무게로 은 사백 세겔을 달아서, 에브론에게 주었다. 17 그래서 마므레 근처 막벨라에 있는 에브론의 밭, 곧 밭과 그 안에 있는 굴, 그리고 그 밭 경계 안에 있는 모든 나무가, 18 마을 법정에 있는 모든 헷 사람이 보는 앞에서 아브라함의 것이 되었다. 19 그렇게 하고 나서, 비로소 아브라함은 자기 아내 사라를 가나안 땅 마므레 근처 곧 헤브론에 있는 막벨라 밭 굴에 안장하였다. 20 이렇게 하여, 헷 사람들은 그 밭과 거기에 있는 굴 묘지를 아브라함의 소유로 넘겨주었다.
