[ Judges 11:1 - 11:11 ] (Hymn304)

1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead was the father of Jephthah.
2 And Gilead’s wife also bore him sons. And when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You shall not have an inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.”
3 Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob, and worthless fellows collected around Jephthah and went out with him.
4 After a time the Ammonites made war against Israel.
5 And when the Ammonites made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob.
6 And they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our leader, that we may fight against the Ammonites.”
7 But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”
8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have turned to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the Ammonites and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
9 Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight against the Ammonites, and the LORD gives them over to me, I will be your head.”
10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The LORD will be witness between us, if we do not do as you say.”
11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and leader over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD at Mizpah.

1길르앗 사람 입다는 굉장한 용사였다. 그는 길르앗이 창녀에게서 낳은 아들이다.
2 길르앗의 본처도 여러 아들을 낳았는데, 그들이 자라서 입다를 쫓아내며 그에게 말하였다. “너는 우리의 어머니가 아닌 다른 여인의 아들이므로, 우리 아버지의 유산을 이어받을 수 없다.”
3 그래서 입다는 자기의 이복 형제들을 피하여 도망가서, 돕이라는 땅에서 살았는데, 건달패들이 입다에게 모여들어 그를 따라다녔다.
4 얼마 뒤에 암몬 자손이 이스라엘을 쳐들어왔다.
5 암몬 자손이 이스라엘을 쳐들어오자, 길르앗의 장로들이 입다를 데려오려고 돕 땅에 가서
6 그에게 말하였다. “와서 우리의 지휘관이 되어 주시오. 그래야 우리가 암몬 자손을 칠 수 있겠소.”
7 그러나 입다는 길르앗의 장로들에게 말하였다. “당신들이 나를 미워하여, 우리 아버지 집에서 나를 쫓아낼 때는 언제이고, 어려움을 당하고 있다고 해서 나에게 올 때는 또 언제요?”
8 그러자 길르앗의 장로들이 입다에게 대답하였다. “바로 그렇기 때문에 우리가 당신을 찾아온 것이오. 우리와 함께 가서 암몬 자손과 싸운다면, 당신은 모든 길르앗 사람의 통치자가 될 것이오.”
9 입다가 길르앗 장로들에게 물었다. “당신들이 나를 데리고 가서 암몬 자손과 싸울 때에, 주님께서 그들을 나에게 넘겨 주신다면, 과연 당신들은 나를 통치자로 받들겠소?”
10 그러자 길르앗의 장로들이 입다에게 다짐하였다. “주님께서 우리 사이의 증인이십니다. 당신이 말한 그대로 우리가 할 것입니다.”
11 입다가 길르앗의 장로들을 따라가니, 백성이 그를 자기들의 통치자와 지휘관으로 삼았다. 입다는 그가 나눈 모든 말을 미스바에서 주님께 말씀드렸다.

Thinking & Understanding
Jephthah was the son of Gilead, whose mother was a prostitute. For this reason, he was driven out by his half-brothers and forced to live in the land of Tob. A mighty warrior, he assembled an army in that land. When Ammon invaded Israel, the elders of Gilead sought out Jephthah because there was no one else to lead them in battle. The people who had abandoned Jephthah now sought his help. The elders promised to make Jephthah their leader if the Lord delivered the Israelites from the Ammonites and Jephthah became the leader of Gilead at Mizpah.
입다는 길르앗의 아들이었지만, 창녀의 아들이라는 이유로 이복형제들에게 쫓겨나 돕 땅에서 살아야 했습니다. 뛰어난 용사였던 그는 그곳에서 사람들을 모아 세력을 키웁니다. 암몬이 이스라엘을 침략하자, 길르앗 장로들은 전쟁을 이끌 지도자가 없어 입다를 찾아갑니다. 처음에는 그를 버렸던 사람들이 이제는 그에게 도움을 요청한 것입니다. 장로들은 주님께서 암몬 자손을 그의 손에 넘겨주시면 입다를 자신들의 지도자로 삼겠다고 약속했고, 입다는 미스바에서 길르앗의 지도자가 됩니다.

Who is God?
VV. 1-11 God uses unexpected people. He killed the Midian general through Jael’s wife, punished Abimelech through an unnamed woman, and raised up Jephthah, who had been looked down on, as the ruler of Israel. They may seem like random choices, but they were all chosen by the Lord for his chosen purpose. Let’s not judge or sideline anyone based on our own views. No one is useless to the Lord.
뜻밖의 사람을 사용하십니다. 야엘의 아내를 통해 미디안 장군을 죽이셨고, 무명의 여인을 통해 아비멜렉을 징벌하셨으며, 이제는 천대받던 입다를 이스라엘의 구원자로 세우십니다. 사람들에게는 뜻밖의 인물이지만, 주님에게는 뜻 안에 두신 사람들입니다. 우리의 시선으로 사람을 평가하며 배제하지 마십시오. 주님이 쓰시지 못할 사람은 없습니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 7-11 When God gives us a chance to serve the community, we shouldn’t use it as a chance to get ahead. When striking a deal with the elders, Jephthah was more concerned with securing authority for himself than with the danger faced by the community. Even when we appear to be working for God and our community, we may harbour greed in our hearts. Let’s reflect on whether we are using the opportunity to serve as a means to satisfy our greed.
하나님이 공동체를 위해 일할 기회를 주실 때, 자기 영달만 추구해서는 안 됩니다. 입다는 길르앗 장로들과 협상하며 공동체의 위기보다 자신이 얻게 될 지위에 더 마음을 두었습니다. 하나님과 공동체를 위한 일처럼 보여도, 그 안에 내 욕심이 숨어 있을 수 있습니다. 섬김의 기회를 내 욕망을 채우는 수단으로 삼고 있지는 않은지 돌아봅시다.

Lord, help me not to use the calling you have given to me the people around me as a means to satisfy my greed.
