Summing up


[ Judges 19:22 - 19:30 ] (Hymn274)

22As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, worthless fellows, surrounded the house, beating on the door. And they said to the old man, the master of the house, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may know him.”
23 And the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, do not do this vile thing.
24 Behold, here are my virgin daughter and his concubine. Let me bring them out now. Violate them and do with them what seems good to you, but against this man do not do this outrageous thing.”
25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man seized his concubine and made her go out to them. And they knew her and abused her all night until the morning. And as the dawn began to break, they let her go.
26 And as morning appeared, the woman came and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her master was, until it was light.
27 And her master rose up in the morning, and when he opened the doors of the house and went out to go on his way, behold, there was his concubine lying at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.
28 He said to her, “Get up, let us be going.” But there was no answer. Then he put her on the donkey, and the man rose up and went away to his home.
29 And when he entered his house, he took a knife, and taking hold of his concubine he divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the territory of Israel.
30 And all who saw it said, “Such a thing has never happened or been seen from the day that the people of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt until this day; consider it, take counsel, and speak.”

22그들이 한참 즐겁게 쉬고 있을 때에, 그 성읍의 불량한 사내들이 몰려와서, 그 집을 둘러싸고, 문을 두드리며, 집 주인인 노인에게 소리질렀다. “노인의 집에 들어온 그 남자를 끌어내시오. 우리가 그 사람하고 관계를 좀 해야겠소.”
23 그러자 주인 노인이 밖으로 나가서 그들에게 말하였다. “여보시오, 젊은이들, 제발 이러지 마시오. 이 사람은 우리 집에 온 손님이니, 그에게 악한 일을 하지 마시오. 제발 이런 수치스러운 일을 하지 마시오.
24 여기 처녀인 내 딸과 그 사람의 첩을 내가 끌어내다 줄 터이니, 그들을 데리고 가서 당신들 좋을 대로 하시오. 그러나 이 남자에게만은 그런 수치스러운 일을 하지 마시오.”
25 그러나 그 불량배들은 노인의 말을 들으려 하지 않았다. 그래서 그 레위 사람은 자기 첩을 밖으로 내보내어 그 남자들에게 주었다. 그러자 그 남자들이 밤새도록 그 여자를 윤간하여 욕보인 뒤에, 새벽에 동이 틀 때에야 놓아 주었다.
26 동이 트자, 그 여자는, 자기 남편이 있는 그 노인의 집으로 돌아와, 문에 쓰러져서, 아침이 밝아올 때까지 거기에 있었다.
27 그 여자의 남편이 아침에 일어나서, 그 집의 문을 열고 떠나려고 나와 보니, 자기 첩인 그 여자가 두 팔로 문지방을 잡고 문간에 쓰러져 있었다.
28 일어나서 같이 가자고 말하였으나, 아무 대답이 없었다. 그는 그 여자의 주검을 나귀에 싣고, 길을 떠나 자기 고장으로 갔다.
29 집에 들어서자마자 칼을 가져다가, 첩의 주검을 열두 토막을 내고, 이스라엘 온 지역으로 그것을 보냈다.
30 그것을 보는 사람들마다 이구 동성으로 말하였다. “이스라엘 자손이 이집트에서 나온 날부터 오늘까지 이런 일은 일어난 적도 없고, 또 본 일도 없다. 이 일을 깊이 생각하여 보고 의논한 다음에, 의견을 말하기로 하자.”

Worthless fellows of Gibeah surrounded the house of the old man where the Levite and his party were staying and demanded that the old man hand over the Levite. The old man tried to dissuade them but ended up handing over the concubine, who was cruelly abused all night. At dawn, she returned and collapsed by the old man’s front door, but no one helped her, and she was left unattended. The Levite returned home with his dead concubine, divided her into twelve pieces, and scattered her body across the territory of Israel. The Israelites were deeply shaken by seeing this and convened to discuss how to handle the matter.
레위 사람 일행이 묵은 노인의 집에 기브아의 불량배들이 들이닥쳐 레위 사람을 내놓으라고 위협합니다. 노인은 그들을 말리려 했지만 결국 레위 사람은 자신의 첩을 밖으로 내보냈고, 그 여자는 밤새 끔찍한 폭력을 당합니다. 새벽에 여자는 노인의 집 문 앞에 쓰러졌지만, 아침까지 아무런 도움도 받지 못한 채 방치됩니다. 레위 사람은 죽은 여자를 데리고 자기 집으로 돌아간 뒤, 그 시신을 열두 조각으로 나누어 이스라엘 온 지역에 보냅니다. 이 일을 본 이스라엘 사람들은 큰 충격을 받고, 이 사건을 어떻게 처리할지 모여서 의논하기로 합니다.
What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 23, 25-27 The worthless men’s wicked deeds were clearly exposed, but the wickedness of those in positions of authority was hidden under the guise of a righteous cause. The old man welcomed the Levite, but he failed to protect two women, and the Levite sent his wife out to protect his own safety. Let’s not support irresponsible actions that demand the sacrifice of the vulnerable for the sake of a supposedly righteous cause.
불량배들의 악행은 분명히 드러났지만, 지위 있는 사람들의 악은 대의라는 명분 아래 감추어졌습니다. 노인은 레위 사람을 환대했지만 두 여자를 보호하지 않았고, 레위 사람은 자기 안위를 위해 아내를 밖으로 내몰았습니다. 대의를 내세우며 약자의 희생을 강요하는 무책임한 행동에 동조하지 마십시오.

VV. 29-30 The Levite handed his concubine over to the worthless men in order to save his own life yet showed no grief or remorse and used her death as a means to stir up Israel. True repentance begins not by condemning the sins of others, but by honestly examining the evil within our own hearts before God. Do I truly grieve over sin, or do I use it for my own purposes?
레위 사람은 자신의 목숨을 구하려고 첩을 불량배들에게 내주고도, 슬픔이나 회한 없이 그녀의 죽음을 이스라엘을 선동하는 수단으로 삼았습니다. 진정한 회개는 타인의 죄를 고발하기 전에 하나님 앞에서 내 안의 악함을 정직하게 살피는 데서 시작됩니다. 나는 죄를 진정으로 슬퍼합니까, 아니면 내 목적을 위해 이용합니까?

Lord, please protect the weak who suffer due to the world’s indifference and irresponsible actions.
