17So Jacob arose and set his sons and his wives on camels. 18 He drove away all his livestock, all his property that he had gained, the livestock in his possession that he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac. 19 Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole her father's household gods. 20 And Jacob tricked Laban the Aramean, by not telling him that he intended to flee. 21 He fled with all that he had and arose and crossed the Euphrates, and set his face toward the hill country of Gilead. 22 When it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled, 23 he took his kinsmen with him and pursued him for seven days and followed close after him into the hill country of Gilead. 24 But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream by night and said to him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.” 25 And Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his kinsmen pitched tents in the hill country of Gilead. 26 And Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done, that you have tricked me and driven away my daughters like captives of the sword? 27 Why did you flee secretly and trick me, and did not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with mirth and songs, with tambourine and lyre? 28 And why did you not permit me to kiss my sons and my daughters farewell? Now you have done foolishly. 29 It is in my power to do you harm. But the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’ 30 And now you have gone away because you longed greatly for your father's house, but why did you steal my gods?” 31 Jacob answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I thought that you would take your daughters from me by force. 32 Anyone with whom you find your gods shall not live. In the presence of our kinsmen point out what I have that is yours, and take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them. 33 So Laban went into Jacob's tent and into Leah's tent and into the tent of the two female servants, but he did not find them. And he went out of Leah's tent and entered Rachel's. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them in the camel's saddle and sat on them. Laban felt all about the tent, but did not find them. 35 And she said to her father, “Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise before you, for the way of women is upon me.” So he searched but did not find the household gods.
17야곱이 서둘러서 자식들과 아내들을 낙타에 나누어 태우고, 18 그가 얻은 모든 짐승과 그가 밧단아람에서 모은 모든 소유를 다 가지고서, 가나안 땅에 있는 자기 아버지 이삭에게로 돌아갈 채비를 하였다. 19 라헬은, 라반이 양털을 깎으러 나간 틈을 타서, 친정집 수호신의 신상들인 드라빔을 훔쳐 냈다. 20 그뿐만 아니라, 야곱은 도망칠 낌새를 조금도 보이지 않은 채, 아람 사람 라반을 속이고 있다가, 21 모든 재산을 거두어 가지고 도망하였다. 그는 강을 건너서, 길르앗 산간지방 쪽으로 갔다. 22 라반은, 야곱이 도망한 지 사흘 만에야 그 소식을 전해 들었다. 23 라반은 친족을 이끌고 이렛길을 쫓아가서, 길르앗 산간지방에서 야곱이 있는 곳에 이르렀다. 24 그 날 밤에 아람 사람 라반이 꿈을 꾸는데, 하나님이 나타나셔서 “좋은 말이든지 나쁜 말이든지, 야곱에게 아무 말도 하지 않도록 조심하라” 하고 그에게 말씀하셨다. 25 라반이 야곱을 따라잡았을 때에, 야곱이 길르앗 산간지방에다 이미 장막을 쳐 놓았으므로, 라반도 자기 친족과 함께 거기에 장막을 쳤다. 26 라반이 야곱에게 말하였다. “자네가 나를 속이고, 나의 딸들을 전쟁 포로 잡아가듯 하니, 어찌 이럴 수가 있는가? 27 어찌하여 자네는 나를 속이고, 이렇게 몰래 도망쳐 나오는가? 어찌하여 나에게 아무 말도 하지 않았는가? 자네가 간다고 말하였으면, 북과 수금에 맞추어서 노래를 부르며, 자네를 기쁘게 떠나보내지 않았겠는가? 28 자네는, 내가 나의 손자 손녀들에게 입을 맞출 기회도 주지 않고, 딸들과 석별의 정을 나눌 시간도 주지 않았네. 자네가 한 일이 어리석기 짝이 없네. 29 내가 마음만 먹으면, 자네를 얼마든지 해칠 수 있네. 그러나 어젯밤 꿈에 자네 조상의 하나님이 나타나셔서 나에게 경고하시기를 ‘좋은 말이든지 나쁜 말이든지, 야곱에게 아무 말도 하지 않도록 조심하여라’ 하셨다네. 30 자네가 아버지의 집이 그리워서 돌아가는 것은 당연하지만, 어찌하여 나의 수호신상들을 훔쳤는가?” 31 야곱이 라반에게 대답하였다. “장인어른께서 저의 처들을 강제로 빼앗으실까 보아 두려웠습니다. 32 그러나 장인어른 댁 수호신상들을 훔친 사람이 있으면, 그를 죽이셔도 좋습니다. 장인어른의 물건 가운데서 무엇이든 하나라도 저에게 있는지, 우리의 친족들이 보는 앞에서 찾아보시고, 있거든 가져가십시오.” 야곱은, 라헬이 그 수호신상들을 훔쳤으리라고는, 전혀 생각하지 못하였다. 33 라반은 먼저 야곱의 장막을 뒤졌다. 다음에는 레아의 장막과 두 여종의 장막까지 뒤졌으나, 아무것도 찾아내지 못하였다. 레아의 장막에서 나온 라반은 라헬의 장막으로 들어갔다. 34 라헬은 그 수호신상들을 낙타 안장 밑에 감추고서, 그 위에 올라타 앉아 있었다. 라반은 장막 안을 샅샅이 뒤졌으나, 아무것도 찾아내지 못하였다. 35 라헬이 자기 아버지에게 말하였다. “아버지, 너무 노여워하지 마십시오. 지금 저는 월경중이므로, 내려서 아버지를 맞이할 수 없습니다.” 라반은 두루 찾아보았으나, 끝내 그 수호신상들을 찾지 못하였다.
