[ Ezra 9:1 - 9:8 ] (Hymn290)

1After these things had been done, the officials approached me and said, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands with their abominations, from the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.
2 For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands. And in this faithlessness the hand of the officials and chief men has been foremost.”
3 As soon as I heard this, I tore my garment and my cloak and pulled hair from my head and beard and sat appalled.
4 Then all who trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the faithlessness of the returned exiles, gathered around me while I sat appalled until the evening sacrifice.
5 And at the evening sacrifice I rose from my fasting, with my garment and my cloak torn, and fell upon my knees and spread out my hands to the LORD my God,
6 saying: “O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens.
7 From the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great guilt. And for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plundering, and to utter shame, as it is today.
8 But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant and to give us a secure hold within his holy place, that our God may brighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our slavery.

1이러한 일들을 마친 다음에, 지도자들이 나에게 와서 말하였다. “이스라엘 백성은, 제사장이나 레위 사람들마저도, 이방 백성과 관계를 끊지 않고, 가나안 사람과 헷 사람과 브리스 사람과 여부스 사람과 암몬 사람과 모압 사람과 이집트 사람과 아모리 사람이 하는 역겨운 일을 따라서 합니다.
2 이방 사람의 딸을 아내로 또는 며느리로 맞아들였으므로, 주변의 여러 족속의 피가 거룩한 핏줄에 섞여 갑니다. 지도자와 관리라는 자들이 오히려 이러한 일에 앞장을 섭니다.”
3 이 말을 들은 나는, 너무나 기가 막혀서, 겉옷과 속옷을 찢고, 머리카락과 수염을 뜯으면서 주저앉았다.
4 그러나 이스라엘의 하나님이 하시는 말씀을 두려워하는 사람들도 있었다. 내가 저녁 제사 때까지 넋을 잃고 앉아 있는 동안에, 그들은 포로로 잡혀 갔다가 되돌아온 백성이 저지른, 이렇게 큰 배신을 보고서, 나에게로 모여들었다.
5 나는 슬픔을 가누지 못한 채로 앉아 있다가, 저녁 제사 때가 되었을 때에 일어나서, 찢어진 겉옷과 속옷을 몸에 그대로 걸치고, 무릎을 꿇고, 두 팔을 들고서, 주 나의 하나님께
6 기도를 드렸다. “하나님, 너무나도 부끄럽고 낯이 뜨거워서, 하나님 앞에서 차마 얼굴을 들 수 없습니다. 우리가 지은 죄는, 우리 스스로가 감당할 수 없을 만큼 불어났고, 우리가 저지른 잘못은 하늘에까지 닿았습니다.
7 조상 때로부터 오늘에 이르기까지, 우리가 저지른 잘못이 너무나도 큽니다. 우리가 지은 죄 때문에, 우리뿐만 아니라 우리의 왕들과 제사장들까지도, 여러 나라 왕들의 칼에 맞아 죽거나 사로잡혀 가고, 재산도 다 빼앗기고, 온갖 수모를 겪었습니다. 이런 일은 오늘에 와서도 마찬가지입니다.
8 그러나 주 우리 하나님께서는, 비록 잠깐이기는 하지만, 우리에게 자비를 베푸시어, 우리 가운데서 얼마쯤을 살아 남게 하셨습니다. 또한 주님께서 거룩하게 여기시는 곳에, 우리가 살아갈 든든한 터전을 마련하여 주셨습니다. 하나님께서는, 우리 눈에서 생기가 돌게 하시고, 잠시나마 종살이에서 벗어나게 하여 주셨습니다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
Ezra was shocked to hear that the Israelites, especially the leaders, had broken God’s law by marrying foreign women. He tore his clothes, grieved, and spent the whole day fasting and praying before God. He repented, considering the sins of the people as his own (vv. 1-5). Ezra confessed that Israel's past destruction was a result of their sins and that they were once again repeating those same sinful acts. However, he also acknowledged God's grace in allowing them to return and offered a confession filled with thanksgiving to God (vv. 6-8).
에스라는 이스라엘 백성, 특히 지도자급 인사들이 율법을 어기고 이방 여인들과 결혼했다는 소식을 듣고 큰 충격에 빠집니다. 그는 옷을 찢고 괴로워하며 온종일 하나님 앞에서 근신하며 머뭅니다. 그리고 백성의 죄악을 마치 자신의 죄처럼 여기며 회개합니다(1-5절). 에스라는 이스라엘의 멸망이 과거의 죄 때문이었고, 지금도 그 죄악에서 벗어나지 못하고 또다시 반복하고 있음을 고백합니다. 그러나 그런 백성에게 여전히 자비를 베푸시는 하나님의 은혜를 인정하며 감사의 고백을 드립니다(6-8절).
What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 1-2 It is not easy to turn from the path of sin. Even though Israel had been destroyed for marrying foreigners and worshipping their idols, the people were repeating the same pattern of sin, even their leaders. We must remember that the peace God grants his people is not a license to sin, but a gift of his grace to equip us to live according to his Word.
죄는 쉽게 끊어지지 않습니다. 과거 이방과 통혼함으로 멸망을 경험했음에도, 이스라엘은 같은 죄를 반복하고 있습니다. 심지어 지도자들이 앞장서고 있습니다. 하나님이 허락하신 평안이 죄의 기회가 아니라, 말씀대로 살아 내기 위한 은혜의 시간임을 기억해야 합니다.

Vv. 7-8 Ezra confessed the greatness of God's grace and admitted that his sins felt even heavier in light of such grace. If we take our daily sins lightly, it means we have not truly understood God's grace. Let us meditate deeply on the grace we have received and resolutely break away from our habitual sins.
에스라는 하나님의 큰 은혜를 고백하며, 그 은혜 앞에서 죄가 더욱 무겁게 느껴짐을 고백합니다. 일상의 죄를 가볍게 여긴다면, 하나님의 은혜를 진정으로 깨닫지 못한 것입니다. 받은 은혜를 깊이 묵상하며, 반복되는 죄를 단호히 끊어 냅시다.
Prayer
Dear God, help us to always remember the grace we have received. Make our hearts sensitive to sin, and lead us to turn away from it.
