1Jacob lived in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan. 2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors. 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him. 5 Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. 6 He said to them, “Hear this dream that I have dreamed: 7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.” 8 His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. 9 Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” 10 But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?” 11 And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind. 12 Now his brothers went to pasture their father's flock near Shechem. 13 And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” 14 So he said to him, “Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock, and bring me word.” So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15 And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, “What are you seeking?” 16 “I am seeking my brothers,” he said. “Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.” 17 And the man said, “They have gone away, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
1야곱은 자기 아버지가 몸 붙여 살던 땅 곧 가나안 땅에서 살았다. 2 야곱의 역사는 이러하다. 열일곱 살 된 소년 요셉이 아버지의 첩들인 빌하와 실바가 낳은 형들과 함께 양을 치는데, 요셉은 형들의 허물을 아버지에게 일러바치곤 하였다. 3 이스라엘은 늘그막에 요셉을 얻었으므로, 다른 아들들보다 요셉을 더 사랑하여서, 그에게 화려한 옷을 지어서 입혔다. 4 형들은 아버지가 그를 자기들보다 더 사랑하는 것을 보고서 요셉을 미워하며, 그에게 말 한 마디도 다정스럽게 하는 법이 없었다. 5 한 번은 요셉이 꿈을 꾸고서 그것을 형들에게 말한 일이 있는데, 그 일이 있은 뒤로부터 형들은 그를 더욱더 미워하였다. 6 요셉이 형들에게 말하였다. “내가 꾼 꿈 이야기를 한 번 들어 보셔요. 7 우리가 밭에서 곡식단을 묶고 있었어요. 그런데 갑자기 내가 묶은 단이 우뚝 일어서고, 형들의 단이 나의 단을 둘러서서 절을 하였어요.” 8 형들이 그에게 말하였다. “네가 우리의 왕이라도 될 성싶으냐? 정말로 네가 우리를 다스릴 참이냐?” 형들은 그의 꿈과 그가 한 말 때문에 그를 더욱더 미워하였다. 9 얼마 뒤에 그는 또 다른 꿈을 꾸고, 그것을 형들에게 말하였다. “들어 보셔요. 또 꿈을 꾸었어요. 이번에는 해와 달과 별 열한 개가 나에게 절을 했어요.” 10 그가 아버지와 형들에게 이렇게 말할 때에, 그의 아버지가 그를 꾸짖었다. “네가 꾼 그 꿈이 무엇이냐? 그래, 나하고 너의 어머니하고 너의 형들이 함께 너에게로 가서, 땅에 엎드려서, 너에게 절을 할 것이란 말이냐?” 11 그의 형들은 그를 시기하였지만, 아버지는 그 말을 마음에 두었다. 12 그의 형들은 아버지의 양 떼를 치려고, 세겜 근처로 갔다. 13 이스라엘이 요셉에게 말하였다. “네가 알고 있듯이, 너의 형들이 세겜 근처에서 양을 치지 않느냐? 내가 너를 너의 형들에게 좀 보내야겠다.” 요셉이 대답하였다. “다녀오겠습니다.” 14 이스라엘이 요셉에게 말하였다. “너의 형들이 잘 있는지, 양들도 잘 있는지를 가서 살펴보고, 나에게 와서 소식을 전해 다오.” 그의 아버지는 헤브론 골짜기에서 그를 떠나보냈다. 요셉이 세겜에 도착하였다. 15 어떤 사람이 보니, 요셉이 들에서 헤매고 있었다. 그가 요셉에게 물었다. “누구를 찾느냐?” 16 요셉이 대답하였다. “형들을 찾습니다. 우리 형들이 어디에서 양을 치고 있는지, 나에게 일러 주시겠습니까?” 17 그 사람이 대답하였다. “너의 형들은 여기에서 떠났다. ‘도단으로 가자’고 하는 말을 내가 들었다.” 그래서 요셉은 형들을 뒤따라가서, 도단 근처에서 형들이 있는 곳을 알아냈다.
