29Then he commanded them and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah—32the field and the cave that is in it were bought from the Hittites.” 33 When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and was gathered to his people. 1 Then Joseph fell on his father's face and wept over him and kissed him. 2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 Forty days were required for it, for that is how many are required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days. 4 And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5 ‘My father made me swear, saying, “I am about to die: in my tomb that I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.” Now therefore, let me please go up and bury my father. Then I will return.’” 6 And Pharaoh answered, “Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear.” 7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. With him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 as well as all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's household. Only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left in the land of Goshen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company. 10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and grievous lamentation, and he made a mourning for his father seven days. 11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim; it is beyond the Jordan. 12 Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them, 13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
29야곱이 아들들에게 일렀다. “나는 곧 세상을 떠나서, 나의 조상들에게로 돌아간다. 내가 죽거든, 나의 조상들과 함께 있게 헷 사람 에브론의 밭에 있는 묘실에 묻어라. 30 그 묘실은 가나안 땅 마므레 앞 막벨라 밭에 있다. 그 묘실은 아브라함 어른께서 묘실로 쓰려고, 헷 사람 에브론에게서 밭과 함께 사두신 것이다. 31 거기에는 아브라함과 그분의 아내 사라, 이 두 분이 묻혀 있고, 이삭과 그분의 아내 리브가, 이 두 분도 거기에 묻혀 있다. 나도 너희 어머니 레아를 거기에다 묻었다. 32 밭과 그 안에 있는 묘실은 헷 사람들에게서 산 것이다.” 33 야곱은 자기 아들들에게 이렇게 이르고 나서, 침상에 똑바로 누워 숨을 거두고, 조상에게로 돌아갔다. 50 :1요셉이 아버지의 얼굴에 엎드려서, 울며 입을 맞추고, 2 시의들을 시켜서, 아버지 이스라엘의 시신에 방부제 향 재료를 넣게 하였다. 시의들이 방부제 향 재료를 넣는데, 3 꼬박 사십 일이 걸렸다. 시신이 썩지 않도록 향 재료를 넣는 데는 이만큼 시간이 걸린다. 그리고 이집트 사람들이 그의 죽음을 애도하며, 칠십 일을 곡하였다. 4 곡하는 기간이 지나니, 요셉이 바로의 궁에 알렸다. “그대들이 나를 너그럽게 본다면, 나를 대신하여 바로께 말씀을 전해 주시오. 5 우리 아버지가 운명하시면서 ‘내가 죽거든, 내가 가나안 땅에다가 준비하여 둔 묘실이 있으니, 거기에 나를 묻어라’ 하시고, 우리 아버지가 나에게 맹세하라고 하셔서, 내가 그렇게 하겠다고 맹세하였소. 내가 올라가서 아버지를 장사지내고 올 수 있도록, 허락을 받아 주시오.” 6 요셉이 이렇게 간청하니, 고인이 맹세시킨 대로, 올라가서 선친을 장사지내도록 하라는 바로의 허락이 내렸다. 7 요셉이 자기 아버지를 묻으러 올라갈 때에, 바로의 모든 신하와, 그 궁에 있는 원로들과, 이집트 온 나라에 있는 모든 원로와, 8 요셉의 온 집안과, 그 형제들과, 아버지의 집안사람이, 그들에게 딸린 어린 아이들과 양 떼와 소 떼는 고센 땅에 남겨둔 채로 요셉과 함께 올라가고, 9 거기에다 병거와 기병까지 요셉을 호위하며 올라가니, 그 굉장한 상여 행렬이 볼 만하였다. 10 그들은 요단 강 동쪽 아닷 타작마당에 이르러서, 크게 애통하며 호곡하였다. 요셉은 아버지를 생각하며, 거기에서 이레 동안 애곡하였다. 11 그들이 타작마당에서 그렇게 애곡하는 것을 보고, 그 지방에 사는 가나안 사람들은 “이집트 사람들이 이렇게 크게 애곡하고 있구나” 하면서, 그 곳 이름을 아벨미스라임이라고 하였으니, 그 곳은 요단 강 동쪽이다. 12 야곱의 아들들은, 아버지가 명령한 대로 하였다. 13 아들들이 아버지의 시신을 가나안 땅으로 모셔다가, 마므레 앞 막벨라 밭에 있는 굴에 장사하였다. 그 굴과 거기에 딸린 밭은 아브라함이 묘 자리로 쓰려고 헷 사람 에브론에게서 사둔 곳이다. 14 요셉은 아버지의 장례를 치르고 난 다음에, 그의 아버지를 장사지내려고 그와 함께 갔던 형제들과 다른 모든 사람들을 데리고, 이집트로 돌아왔다.
