12Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites and said, “What do you have against me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?” 13 And the king of the Ammonites answered the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel on coming up from Egypt took away my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; now therefore restore it peaceably.” 14 Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites 15 and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites, 16 but when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh. 17 Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. And they sent also to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh. 18 “Then they journeyed through the wilderness and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and arrived on the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab. 19 Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon, and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to our country,’ 20 but Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people together and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel. 21 And the LORD, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country. 22 And they took possession of all the territory of the Amorites from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan. 23 So then the LORD, the God of Israel, dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel; and are you to take possession of them? 24 Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? And all that the LORD our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess. 25 Now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend against Israel, or did he ever go to war with them? 26 While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, 30 0 years, why did you not deliver them within that time? 27 I therefore have not sinned against you, and you do me wrong by making war on me. The LORD, the Judge, decide this day between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon.” 28 But the king of the Ammonites did not listen to the words of Jephthah that he sent to him.
12입다가 암몬 자손의 왕에게 사절을 보내어 말을 전하였다. “우리 사이에 무엇이 잘못되었기에, 나의 영토를 침범하십니까?” 13 암몬 자손의 왕이 입다의 사절에게 말하였다. “이스라엘이 이집트에서 올라올 때에 아르논 강에서부터 얍복 강과 요단 강에 이르는 나의 땅을 점령하였습니다. 그러니 이제 말썽을 일으키지 말고 그 땅을 내놓으시기 바랍니다.” 14 입다는 다시 암몬 자손의 왕에게 사절을 보냈다. 15 사절이 그에게 말을 전하였다. “나 입다는 이렇게 답변합니다. 이스라엘이 모압 땅이나 암몬 자손의 땅을 빼앗은 것이 아닙니다. 16 이스라엘이 이집트에서 나와, 광야를 지나고 홍해를 건너 가데스에 이르렀을 때에, 17 이스라엘이 에돔 왕에게 사절을 보내어 에돔 왕의 영토를 지나가게 허락하여 달라고 부탁을 한 일이 있었습니다. 그러나 에돔의 왕은 이 부탁을 들어주지 않았습니다. 이스라엘은 모압 왕에게도 사절을 보내었으나, 그도 우리의 요청을 들어주려고 하지 않았습니다. 그래서 이스라엘은 가데스에 머물러 있다가, 18 광야를 지나 에돔과 모압 땅을 돌아서 모압 땅 동쪽으로 가서, 아르논 강 건너에 진을 쳤으며, 모압 땅에는 들어가지 않았습니다. 아르논 강이 모압 땅의 국경이기 때문이었습니다. 19 이스라엘은 또 헤스본에서 통치하던 아모리 사람의 왕 시혼에게도 사절을 보내어, 우리가 갈 곳에 이르기까지 그의 영토를 지나가게 허락하여 달라고 간절히 부탁하였습니다. 20 그런데 시혼은 이스라엘이 자기의 영토를 지나가는 것을 허락하지 않을 뿐만 아니라, 오히려 그의 온 군대를 모아 야하스에 진을 치고 이스라엘에게 싸움을 걸어왔습니다. 21 그래서 이스라엘의 주 하나님이 시혼과 그의 온 군대를 이스라엘의 손에 넘겨 주셨습니다. 이스라엘이 그들을 쳐서 이기고, 아모리 사람의 모든 땅 곧 그들이 사는 그 영토를 차지하게 되었는데, 22 이렇게 하여서 이스라엘은 아르논 강에서 얍복 강까지와 또 광야에서 요단 강까지 이르는 아모리 사람의 온 영토를 차지하였습니다. 23 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 그의 백성 이스라엘 앞에서 이렇게 아모리 사람을 몰아내셨습니다. 그런데 이제 와서 당신이 이 땅을 차지하겠다는 것입니까? 24 당신은 당신이 섬기는 신 그모스가 당신의 몫으로 준 땅을 차지하지 않았습니까? 우리는 주 우리 하나님이 우리 앞에서 원수를 몰아내고 주신 모든 땅을 차지한 것입니다. 25 이제 당신이 모압 왕 십볼의 아들 발락보다도 뛰어나다고 생각합니까? 그가 감히 이스라엘과 다투거나 싸웠습니까? 26 이스라엘이 헤스본과 그 주변 마을들과, 아로엘과 그 주변 마을들과, 아르논 강변의 모든 성읍에 삼백 년 동안이나 살았는데, 왜 당신은 그 동안에 이 지역들을 되찾지 않았습니까? 27 나로서는 당신에게 잘못한 것이 전혀 없는데도 당신이 나를 해치려고 쳐들어왔으니, 심판자이신 주님께서 오늘 이스라엘 자손과 암몬 자손 사이를 판가름해 주실 것입니다.” 28 그러나 암몬 자손의 왕은 입다가 자기에게 전하여 준 말에 전혀 귀를 기울이지 않았다.
