1Then Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the east. 2 As he looked, he saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep lying beside it, for out of that well the flocks were watered. The stone on the well's mouth was large, 3 and when all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place over the mouth of the well. 4 Jacob said to them, “My brothers, where do you come from?” They said, “We are from Haran.” 5 He said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.” 6 He said to them, “Is it well with him?” They said, “It is well; and see, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep!” 7 He said, “Behold, it is still high day; it is not time for the livestock to be gathered together. Water the sheep and go, pasture them.” 8 But they said, “We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together and the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well; then we water the sheep.” 9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess. 10 Now as soon as Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother. 11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud. 12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's kinsman, and that he was Rebekah's son, and she ran and told her father. 13 As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister's son, he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things, 14 and Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh!” And he stayed with him a month. 15 Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?” 16 Now Laban had two daughters. The name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah's eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance. 18 Jacob loved Rachel. And he said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.” 19 Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me.” 20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.
1야곱이 줄곧 길을 걸어서, 드디어 동방 사람들이 사는 땅에 이르렀다. 2 거기 들에 우물이 있는데, 그 곁에 양 떼 세 무리가 엎드려 있는 것이 보였다. 그 곳은 목자들이 양 떼에게 물을 먹이는 우물인데, 그 우물 아귀는 큰 돌로 늘 덮여 있어서, 3 양 떼가 다 모이면 목자들이 우물 아귀에서 그 돌을 굴려내어 양 떼에게 물을 먹이고, 다 먹인 다음에 다시 돌을 굴려서 우물 아귀를 덮고는 하였다. 4 야곱이 그 목자들에게 물었다. “여보십시오, 어디에서 오시는 길입니까?” 그들이 대답하였다. “우리는 하란에서 오는 길입니다.” 5 야곱이 그들에게 또 물었다. “나홀이라는 분의 손자인 라반이라는 분을 아십니까?” 그들이 대답하였다. “아, 예, 우리는 그를 잘 압니다.” 6 야곱이 또 그들에게 물었다. “그분이 평안하게 지내십니까?” 그들이 대답하였다. “잘 삽니다. 아, 마침, 저기 그의 딸 라헬이 양 떼를 몰고 옵니다.” 7 야곱이 말하였다. “아직 해가 한창인데, 아직은 양 떼가 모일 때가 아닌 것 같은데, 양 떼에게 물을 먹이고, 다시 풀을 뜯기러 나가야 하지 않습니까?” 8 그들이 대답하였다. “그렇지 않습니다. 양 떼가 다 모일 때까지 기다렸다가, 양 떼가 다 모이면, 우물 아귀의 돌을 굴려내고서, 양 떼에게 물을 먹입니다.” 9 야곱이 목자들과 말하고 있는 사이에, 라헬이 아버지의 양 떼를 이끌고 왔다. 라헬은 양 떼를 치는 목동이다. 10 야곱이 외삼촌 라반의 딸 라헬과 그가 치는 외삼촌의 양 떼를 보고, 우물 아귀에서 돌을 굴려내어, 외삼촌의 양 떼에게 물을 먹였다. 11 그러고 나서, 야곱은 라헬에게 입을 맞추고, 기쁜 나머지 큰소리로 울면서, 12 라헬의 아버지가 자기의 외삼촌이라는 것과, 자기가 리브가의 아들이라는 것을 라헬에게 말하였다. 라헬이 달려가서, 아버지에게 이 사실을 말하였다. 13 라반은 누이의 아들 야곱이 왔다는 말을 듣고서, 그를 만나러 곧장 달려와, 그를 보자마자 껴안고서, 입을 맞추고, 자기 집으로 데리고 갔다. 야곱은 지금까지 있었던 일들을 라반에게 다 말하였다. 14 말을 듣고 난 라반은 야곱에게 말하였다. “너는 나와 한 피붙이이다.” 야곱이 한 달을 라반의 집에 머물러 있을 때에, 15 라반이 그에게 말하였다. “네가 나의 조카이긴 하다만, 나의 일을 거저 할 수는 없지 않느냐? 너에게 어떻게 보수를 주면 좋을지, 너의 말을 좀 들어 보자.” 16 라반에게는 두 딸이 있었다. 맏딸의 이름은 레아이고, 둘째 딸의 이름은 라헬이다. 17 레아는 눈매가 부드럽고, 라헬은 몸매가 아름답고 용모도 예뻤다. 18 야곱은 라헬을 더 사랑하였다. 그래서 그는 “제가 칠 년 동안 외삼촌 일을 해 드릴 터이니, 그 때에 가서, 외삼촌의 작은 딸 라헬과 결혼하게 해주십시오” 하고 말하였다. 19 그러자 라반이 말하였다. “그 아이를 다른 사람과 짝지어 주는 것보다, 너에게 짝지어 주는 것이 더 낫겠다. 그러면 여기서 나와 함께 살자.” 20 야곱은 라헬을 아내로 맞으려고 칠 년 동안이나 일을 하였지만, 라헬을 사랑하기 때문에, 칠 년이라는 세월을 마치 며칠같이 느꼈다.
