11And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals. 12 And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the LORD to anger. 13 They abandoned the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. 14 So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. 15 Whenever they marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them for harm, as the LORD had warned, and as the LORD had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress. 16 Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they whored after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the LORD, and they did not do so. 18 Whenever the LORD raised up judges for them, the LORD was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them. 19 But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways. 20 So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he said, “Because this people have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their fathers and have not obeyed my voice, 21 I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died, 22 in order to test Israel by them, whether they will take care to walk in the way of the LORD as their fathers did, or not.” 23 So the LORD left those nations, not driving them out quickly, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua.
11이스라엘 자손이 바알 신들을 섬기어, 주님께서 보시기에 악한 행동을 일삼았으며, 12 이집트 땅에서 그들을 이끌어 내신 주 조상의 하나님을 저버리고, 주위의 백성들이 섬기는 다른 신들을 따르며 경배하여, 주님을 진노하시게 하였다. 13 그들은 이렇게 주님을 저버리고 바알과 아스다롯을 섬겼다. 14 그러므로 주님께서 이스라엘 백성에게 크게 분노하셔서, 그들을 약탈자의 손에 넘겨 주셨으므로, 약탈자들이 그들을 약탈하였다. 또 주님께서는 그들을 주위의 원수들에게 팔아 넘기셨으므로, 그들이 다시는 원수들을 당해 낼 수 없었다. 15 그들이 싸우러 나갈 때마다, 주님께서 그들에게 말씀하시고 맹세하신 대로, 주님께서 손으로 그들을 쳐서 재앙을 내리셨으므로, 그들은 무척 괴로웠다. 16 그 뒤에 주님께서는 사사들을 일으키셔서, 그들을 약탈자의 손에서 구하여 주셨다. 17 그러나 그들은 사사들의 말도 듣지 않고, 오히려 음란하게 다른 신들을 섬기며 경배하였다. 그들은 자기 조상이 주님의 명령에 순종하며 걸어온 길에서 빠르게 떠나갔다. 그들은 조상처럼 살지 않았다. 18 그러나 주님께서는 그들을 돌보시려고 사사를 세우실 때마다 그 사사와 함께 계셔서, 그 사사가 살아 있는 동안에는 그들을 원수들의 손에서 구하여 주셨다. 주님께서, 원수들에게 억눌려 괴로움을 당하는 그들의 신음소리를 들으시고, 그들을 불쌍히 여기셨기 때문이다. 19 그러나 사사가 죽으면 백성은 다시 돌아서서, 그들의 조상보다 더 타락하여, 다른 신들을 따르고 섬기며, 그들에게 경배하였다. 그들은 악한 행위와 완악한 행실을 버리지 않았다. 20 그러므로 주님께서 이스라엘 백성에게 크게 노하셔서, 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “이 백성이, 내가 그들의 조상과 세운 언약을 어기고, 나에게 순종하지 않았다. 21 그러므로 나도, 여호수아가 죽은 뒤에도 남아 있는 민족들 가운데 어느 하나라도 더 이상 몰아내지 않겠다. 22 이렇게 하여서, 이스라엘 백성이 나 주가 가르쳐 준 길을 그들의 조상처럼 충실하게 걸어가는지 가지 않는지를 시험하여 보겠다.” 23 그래서 주님께서는 다른 민족들을 얼른 몰아내지 않고, 그 땅에 남아 있게 하셨으며, 여호수아에게도 그들을 넘겨 주지 않으셨던 것이다.
