19And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
19유대 사람들이 예루살렘에서 제사장들과 레위 지파 사람들을 [요한에게] 보내어서 “당신은 누구요?” 하고 물어 보게 하였다. 그 때에 요한의 증언은 이러하였다. 20 그는 거절하지 않고 고백하였다. “나는 그리스도가 아니오” 하고 그는 고백하였다. 21 그들이 다시 요한에게 물었다. “그러면, 당신은 누구란 말이오? 엘리야요?” 요한은 “아니오” 하고 대답하였다. “당신은 그 예언자요?” 하고 그들이 물으니, 요한은 “아니오” 하고 대답하였다. 22 그래서 그들이 말하였다. “그러면, 당신은 누구란 말이오? 우리를 보낸 사람들에게 대답할 말을 좀 해주시오. 당신은 자신을 무엇이라고 말하시오?” 23 요한이 대답하였다. “예언자 이사야가 말한 대로, 나는 ‘광야에서 외치는 이의 소리’요. ‘너희는 주님의 길을 곧게 하여라’ 하고 말이오.” 24 그들은 바리새파 사람들이 보낸 사람들이었다. 25 그들이 또 요한에게 물었다. “당신이 그리스도도 아니고, 엘리야도 아니고, 그 예언자도 아니면, 어찌하여 세례를 주시오?” 26 요한이 대답하였다. “나는 물로 세례를 주오. 그런데 여러분 가운데 여러분이 알지 못하는 이가 한 분 서 계시오. 27 그는 내 뒤에 오시는 분이지만, [나는] 그분의 신발 끈을 풀 만한 자격도 없소.” 28 이것은 요한이 세례를 주던 요단 강 건너편 베다니에서 일어난 일이다. 29 다음 날 요한은 예수께서 자기에게 오시는 것을 보고 말하였다. “보시오, 세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양입니다. 30 내가 전에 말하기를 ‘내 뒤에 한 분이 오실 터인데, 그분은 나보다 먼저 계시기에, 나보다 앞서신 분입니다’ 한 적이 있습니다. 그것은 이분을 두고 한 말입니다. 31 나도 이분을 알지 못하였습니다. 내가 와서 물로 세례를 주는 것은, 이분을 이스라엘에게 알리려고 하는 것입니다.” 32 요한이 또 증언하여 말하였다. “나는 성령이 비둘기같이 하늘에서 내려와서 이분 위에 머무는 것을 보았습니다. 33 나도 이분을 몰랐습니다. 그러나 나를 보내어 물로 세례를 주게 하신 분이 나에게 말씀하시기를, ‘성령이 어떤 사람 위에 내려와서 머무는 것을 보거든, 그가 바로 성령으로 세례를 주시는 분임을 알아라’ 하셨습니다. 34 그런데 나는 그것을 보았습니다. 그래서 나는, 이분이 하나님의 아들이라고 증언하였습니다.”
