[ Isaiah 53:1 - 53:6 ] - hymn 455
Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

Most people avoided George Chase. He lived in a twelve-foot-square shack in the woods where New England’s Pawcatuck River meets Little Narragansett Bay. To the locals, it was obvious George didn’t have a bathtub. They could smell the evidence. One day a hurricane brought the Atlantic Ocean rushing over the seacoast, washing away the beachfront with its attractive homes. Survivors pulled themselves from the bay and began searching for refuge. Eleven of them, soaked and shivering, found it in George’s cabin. He gave them everything he had: water, milk, ginger tea, and shelter. After the hurricane of 1938, the townsfolk had a far different opinion of George Chase.
It’s sad when we make superficial judgments about others, yet it’s our nature to do so. We do that with Jesus too. We might picture Him as He’s portrayed in old paintings, serenely handsome. But the prophet Isaiah said of the Messiah, “He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem” (ISAIAH 53:2-3). Yet this man gave us everything He had. “He took up our pain and bore our suffering” (V. 4). He offered His life for ours.

마치 사람들이 그에게서 얼굴을 가리는 것 같이 멸시를 당하였고 우리도 그를 귀히 여기지 아니하였도다 [이사야 53:3]
사람들은 대부분 조지 체이스를 피했습니다. 그는 뉴잉글랜드의 포카턱 강과 리틀 나래겐셋 만이 만나는 숲 속의 12 평방 피트(약 1.1평) 크기의 오두막집에 살았습니다. 동네 사람들은 조지의 집에 분명히 목욕통이 없을 것이라고 생각했습니다. 그 이유는 그에게 나는 냄새 때문이었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 태풍으로 대서양의 물이 해안을 덮쳐 해변가에 있던 멋진 집들이 휩쓸려갔습니다. 생존자들은 만에서 빠져나와 피난처를 찾기 시작했는데, 그들 중 열 한 명이 흠뻑 젖어 추위에 떨며 조지의 오두막집에 피신했습니다. 조지는 물과 우유, 생강차, 쉼터 등 자기가 가진 모든 것을 그들에게 주었습니다. 1938년 태풍이 지나고 조지 체이스에 대한 동네 사람들의 인식은 완전히 달라졌습니다.
우리가 다른 사람들을 겉모습만 보고 판단하는 것은 안타까운 일이지만, 우리 인간은 본성적으로 그렇게 합니다. 우리는 예수님도 그렇게 판단해 예수님을 오래된 그림 작품 속의 조용하고 멋진 모습으로만 상상하기도 합니다. 그러나 이사야 선지자는 메시아에 대해 이렇게 말합니다. “고운 모양도 없고 풍채도 없은 즉 우리가 보기에 흠모할 만한 아름다운 것이 없도다... 마치 사람들이 그에게서 얼굴을 가리는 것 같이 멸시를 당하였고 우리도 그를 귀히 여기지 아니하였도다” (이사야 53:2-3). 그러나 이분은 우리에게 그의 모든 것을 내주었습니다. “그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하셨습니다”(4절). 예수님은 우리를 위해 자신의 생명까지 주셨습니다.
우리가 동료들의 인성을 제대로 알아보지 못하는 것은 슬픈 일입니다. 그러나 우리가 경멸했던 분의 신성을 알아보지 못하는 것은 얼마나 더 슬픈 일인지 모릅니다! |
