[ Ruth 1:11 - 1:18 ] - hymn 563
Ruth replied, . . . “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” [ RUTH 1:16 ]
A restaurant employee discovered an unconscious man beside a dumpster. He was sunburned, bitten by ants, and showed signs of blunt force trauma. He had no memory of who he was. The man, later self-named “Benjamin Kyle,” lived in limbo for more than a decade. He couldn’t work, collect benefits, or even reclaim his past. His healing began when a community of strangers helped him rediscover his identity through genetic testing and investigation. “I have a history,” he said. “I’m not just some stranger that materialized out of thin air.”
The story of Ruth in the Bible can also be seen as one of redis-covered belonging. After losing her husband and leaving her homeland, she chose to bind herself to her mother-in-law Naomi and her people. She said, “Where you go I will go Your people will be my people and your God my God” (RUTH 1:16). Ruth connected her identity and destiny to that of Naomi and her people in life and in death. She was “determined to go with her” (V. 18)—prioritizing community over clarity, belonging over certainty. In doing so, she stepped into God’s redemptive story and is remembered forever as part of the lineage of Christ (4:18-22; MATTHEW 1:3-5).
When we as believers in Jesus forget who we are—or when life’s pain leaves us disoriented—God often uses community to reconnect us with our most authentic identity. In Him we’re beloved, chosen, and known. MARVIN WILLIAMS |

룻이 이르되... 어머니께서 가시는 곳에 나도 가고 어머니께서 머무시는 곳에 나도 머물겠나이다 어머니의 백성이 나의 백성이 되고 어머니의 하나님이 나의 하나님이 되시리니 [룻기 1:16]
한 식당 직원이 쓰레기통 옆에서 의식을 잃은 남자를 발견했습니다. 햇볕에 심하게 탄 그 사람은 개미에게 물리고 둔기에 맞은 자국도 있었습니다. 그는 자기가 누구인지도 기억을 못했습니다. 나중에 스스로를 “벤자민 카일”이라고 이름지은 그는 이런 상태로 10년을 넘게 살았습니다. 일도 못 하고 복지 혜택도 못 받는 그는 무엇보다 자신의 과거를 되찾을 수가 없었습니다. 그러던 중 그를 모르는 어느 단체에서 유전자 검사와 추적조사를 통해 그의 신분을 알아내는 일에 나섬으로 그의 치유가 시작되었습니다. 그는 “저에게도 살아온 과거가 있습니다. 그냥 하늘에서 뚝 떨어진 건 아니지요.”라고 했습니다.
성경 속 룻의 이야기도 자신이 속한 곳을 다시 찾은 이야기라 할 수 있습니다. 남편을 잃고 고향을 떠난 룻은 시어머니 나오미와 그의 백성들과 함께 하기로 했습니다. 룻은 “어머니께서 가시는 곳에 나도 가고... 어머니의 백성이 나의 백성이 되고 어머니의 하나님이 나의 하나님이 되시리라”(룻기 1:16)고 말했습니다. 룻은 삶과 죽음 속에서 자기의 정체성과 운명을 나오미와 그의 백성들의 그것과 연결시켰습니다. 룻은 “어머니와 함께 가기로 굳게 결심하였습니다”(18절). 그것은 단촐한 삶보다 공동체를, 정해진 삶보다 함께 사는 삶을 선택한 것입니다. 이렇게 하여 하나님의 구원의 역사에 들어온 룻은 예수님의 계보의 한 사람으로 영원히 기억되고 있습니다(4:18-22; 마태복음 1:3-5).
예수님을 믿는 우리가 자신이 누구인지를 잊었거나 삶의 고통으로 혼란을 겪을 때, 하나님은 종종 공동체를 통해 우리의 정체성의 근원을 다시 찾게 하십니다. 하나님 안에서 우리는 사랑받는 자이고, 선택된 자이고, 알려진 자입니다. |
