THE HEART OF THE MATTER		마음의 중심
[ 1 Samuel 16:6 - 16:12 ] - hymn 212 People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. [ 1 SAMUEL 16:7 ] On a teaching trip to Moscow, I decided to take the subway to get lunch. Standing in the subway car, I started whistling simply because I felt good after an enjoyable morning teaching and the day was pleasant. The passengers stared at me like I was insane. When I got back to the school, I told one of the office workers that the people were so discouraged and downhearted they stared when I whistled. She politely informed me, “Yes, their lives are very hard, but that isn’t why they stared. They stared because it’s rude to whistle in public here.” When we make assumptions, we base them on external fac-tors that may not have any bearing on the moment. It’s helpful to recall the story of David’s selection as future king of Israel. As the prophet Samuel considered Jesse’s eldest son, he thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed stands here before the LORD” (1 SAMUEL 16:6). But God told Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (V. 7). Basing judgments on appearances will lead to wrong conclu-sions. We do well to let God do the judging. He sees the heart of the matter. BILL CROWDER		[ 사무엘상 16:6 - 16:12 ] - 찬송가 212 장 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라 [사무엘상 16:7] 모스크바로 가르치러 갔을 때, 지하철을 타고 점심을 먹으러 가기로 했습니다. 객차 안에 서 있는데, 오전에 수업을 즐겁게 마쳤고 날씨도 좋아서 나도 모르게 휘파람을 불기 시작했습니다. 그러자 승객들이 나를 미친 사람처럼 빤히 쳐다보았습니다. 학교로 돌아와서 사무실 직원에게 사람들이 너무 침체되어 있고 의기소침해서 휘파람 부는 나를 그렇게 쳐다본 게 아닌가 생각한다고 말했습니다. 그러자 그 직원은 정중하게 말했습니다. “네, 여기 사람들의 삶이 힘든 것은 사실이지만, 그게 쳐다본 이유는 아닐 거예요. 이곳에서는 공공장소에서 휘파람을 부는 것이 무례하게 여겨지기 때문입니다.” 우리는 바로 그 상황과는 전혀 무관할 지도 모르는 외부 요인들에 근거하여 사람들에 대해 추정하곤 합니다. 이 사실은 장차 이스라엘의 왕으로 다윗이 선택된 이야기를 생각해보면 도움이 됩니다. 사무엘 선지자는 이새의 맏아들을 보고 속으로 생각했습니다. “여호와의 기름 부으실 자가 과연 주님 앞에 있도다” (사무엘상 16:6). 그러나 하나님은 사무엘에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라 내가 이미 그를 버렸노라 내가 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라”(7절). 사람의 외모를 보고 판단하면 잘못된 결론으로 이어질 수 있습니다. 판단은 하나님께 맡겨드리는 것이 좋습니다. 그분은 마음의 중심을 보시기 때문입니다.

Wise Father, please forgive me for judging people’s motives when I don’t know the truth about their hearts.
Help me to entrust such judgments to You.

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD's anointed stands here before the LORD.”

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”

9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the LORD chosen this one.”

10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The LORD has not chosen these.”

11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

누군가가 당신을 잘못 판단할 때 어떤 생각이 듭니까?
다른 사람에 대해 쉽게 단정하게 되는 이유는 무엇일까요?

지혜로우신 하나님 아버지, 다른 사람의 마음을 알지 못하면서 그들의 의도를 판단하는 저를 용서해 주소서.
그러한 판단을 하나님께 맡길 수 있도록 도와주소서.

6 ○그들이 오매 사무엘이 엘리압을 보고 마음에 이르기를 여호와의 기름 부으실 자가 과연 주님 앞에 있도다 하였더니

7 여호와께서 사무엘에게 이르시되 그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라 내가 이미 그를 버렸노라 내가 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라 하시더라

8 이새가 아비나답을 불러 사무엘 앞을 지나가게 하매 사무엘이 이르되 이도 여호와께서 택하지 아니하셨느니라 하니

9 이새가 삼마로 지나게 하매 사무엘이 이르되 이도 여호와께서 택하지 아니하셨느니라 하니라

10 이새가 그의 아들 일곱을 다 사무엘 앞으로 지나가게 하나 사무엘이 이새에게 이르되 여호와께서 이들을 택하지 아니하셨느니라 하고

11 또 사무엘이 이새에게 이르되 네 아들들이 다 여기 있느냐 이새가 이르되 아직 막내가 남았는데 그는 양을 지키나이다 사무엘이 이새에게 이르되 사람을 보내어 그를 데려오라 그가 여기 오기까지는 우리가 식사 자리에 앉지 아니하겠노라

12 이에 사람을 보내어 그를 데려오매 그의 빛이 붉고 눈이 빼어나고 얼굴이 아름답더라 여호와께서 이르시되 이가 그니 일어나 기름을 부으라 하시는지라
