YIELDED AND STILL		순종하며 잠잠히
[ Jeremiah 18:1 - 18:6 ] - hymn 549 The potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. [ JEREMIAH 18:4 ] Not much is known about Adelaide Pollard, and that’s sort of the point. She was a humble servant of God who wanted no recognition for herself. At the age of forty, she felt a strong calling to be a missionary to Africa, but that door was closed to her, leaving her greatly discouraged. Yet Adelaide was reminded of a verse: “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand” (JEREMIAH 18:6). Later, she penned a hymn with these lyrics: “Thou art the potter, I am the clay.” The image in Jeremiah has much to speak into our lives today: “The pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him” (V. 4). This is a picture of how God reshapes us into His better purpose. Whatever we think we should do and be, God may have another shape for our lives: “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand” (V. 6). Eventually Adelaide did go to Africa, but it may be that God’s shape for her life had more to do with other things—perhaps writing that hymn, “Have Thine Own Way,” which has inspired millions in the years since. When we feel “on hold” in what we want to do, we might think about how God is shaping us in the meantime. We do well to let God have His own way and wait, “yielded and still,” for His greater purpose. KENNETH PETERSEN		[ 예레미야 18:1 - 18:6 ] - 찬송가 549 장 그가 그것으로 자기 의견에 좋은 대로 다른 그릇을 만들더라 [예레미야 18:4] 아델라이드 폴라드라는 인물에 대해 많이 알려져 있지는 않지만 사실은 그 점이 더 중요할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 겸손한 종이었던 그 여성은 사람들에게 인정받는 것을 원치 않았습니다. 아델라이드는 마흔 살 때 아프리카에 선교사로 나가라는 강한 부름을 느꼈지만 문이 막혀 크게 좌절했습니다. 그러나 그녀에게 “진흙이 토기장이의 손에 있음 같이 너희가 내 손에 있느니라”(예레미야 18:6)라는 구절이 떠올랐습니다. 아델라이드는 후에 “주는 토기장이, 나는 진흙”이라는 찬송의 가사를 썼습니다. 예레미야에 나오는 이 비유는 오늘날에도 우리 삶에 대해 많은 것을 말해줍니다. “진흙으로 만든 그릇이 토기장이의 손에서 터지매 그가 그것으로 자기 의견에 좋은 대로 다른 그릇을 만들더라”(4절). 이 장면은 하나님께서 우리의 삶을 더 나은 그분의 목적에 맞게 다시 빚으시는 모습을 보여줍니다. 우리가 자신이 무엇을 하고 무엇이 되어야 한다고 생각해도, 하나님은 우리의 삶을 다른 모양으로 만드실 수 있습니다. “진흙이 토기장이의 손에 있음 같이 너희가 내 손에 있느니라”(6절). 아델라이드는 결국 아프리카로 가게 되었지만, 어쩌면 그녀의 삶에 대한 하나님의 계획은 다른 데 있었는지도 모릅니다. 지금까지 수많은 사람들에게 영감을 불어넣은 “주님의 뜻을 이루소서”같은 찬송가를 쓰는 일 같은 것 말입니다. 우리가 하려는 일이 “중단” 당한 것 같을 때, 우리는 그 시간 동안 하나님이 우리를 어떻게 빚고 계시는지에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님께서 그분의 뜻을 이루시도록 하나님의 더 큰 목적을 위해 “순종하며 잠잠히” 기다리는 것이 마땅합니다.

2 “Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my message.”

3 So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel.

4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

5 Then the word of the LORD came to me.

6 He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the LORD. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.

사랑하는 하나님, 토기장이이신 하나님의 손길에 저를 온전히 맡기도록 도와주소서.

2 너는 일어나 토기장이의 집으로 내려가라 내가 거기에서 내 말을 네게 들려 주리라 하시기로

3 내가 토기장이의 집으로 내려가서 본즉 그가 녹로로 일을 하는데

4 진흙으로 만든 그릇이 토기장이의 손에서 터지매 그가 그것으로 자기 의견에 좋은 대로 다른 그릇을 만들더라

5 ○그 때에 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하니라 이르시되

6 여호와의 말씀이니라 이스라엘 족속아 이 토기장이가 하는 것 같이 내가 능히 너희에게 행하지 못하겠느냐 이스라엘 족속아 진흙이 토기장이의 손에 있음 같이 너희가 내 손에 있느니라
