SEEKING GOD’S FACE		하나님의 얼굴을 찾아서
[ Isaiah 41:17 - 41:20 ] - hymn 446 I will set . . . the fir and the cypress together, so that people may see and know . . . the Lord has done this. [ ISAIAH 41:19-20 ] Those who drive along Highway 18 in western Oregon each fall are greeted with a delightful surprise from the tree-covered hillside flanking the road: a giant smiley face. The cheerful face is only visible in the autumn when the Larch tree needles turn yellow, contrasting with the surrounding, dark green Douglas fir trees (which create the eyes and mouth). A lumber company planted the three-hundred-foot-diameter face in 2011 as part of an effort to replenish the timber they’d harvested. Isaiah invites us to know God as the one who brings life to desolate places. He reminded the Israelites during the barrenness of their captivity that God “[makes] rivers flow,” can “turn the desert into pools of water,” and grow “the cedar and the acacia” in the desert (ISAIAH 41:18-19). God does these things not solely for His (and our) delight; He plants junipers, fir, and cypress “so that people may see and know” (V. 20) that He authors all and will ultimately redeem all—even those places thought to be a “wasteland” (V. 19). Though we may not glimpse a face smiling back at us from a hillside, all of creation can remind us of God’s redemptive power over our world and our individual circumstances—even in the wake (or fear) of devastation. Let’s seek His face as our source of hope and joy amid our struggles. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG		[ 이사야 41:17 - 41:20 ] - 찬송가 446 장 내가... 잣나무와 소나무와 황양목을 함께 두리니 무리가 보고 여호와의 손이 지으신 바인 줄 알며 [이사야 41:19-20] 매년 가을, 오리건 주 서부의 18번 고속도로를 따라 운전하는 사람들은 도로 옆 나무로 우거진 언덕에서 깜짝 놀랄만한 즐거움을 마주합니다. 바로 커다란 웃는 얼굴 모양의 나무들입니다. 이 환히 웃는 얼굴은 낙엽송 바늘잎이 노랗게 변하며 주변의 짙은 녹색의 전나무(눈과 입을 만들어냅니다) 와 대비를 이루는 가을에만 볼 수 있습니다. 한 목재 회사가 자신들이 벌목한 목재를 다시 채우기 위한 노력의 일환으로 2011년에 지름 300피트(약 90미터) 에 달하는 이 얼굴 모습으로 나무를 심었던 것입니다. 이사야는 우리에게 하나님이 황폐한 곳에 생명을 주시는 분임을 알려 줍니다. 그는 이스라엘 백성들의 포로 생활로 황량해진 불모지에 하나님께서 “강을 내며,” “광야가 못이 되게 하며,” 광야에 “백향목과 싯딤 나무를” 자라게 하신다는(이사야 41:18-19) 것을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 하나님은 이 일들을 단지 그분 자신과 우리의 기쁨을 위해서만 하시는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 향나무와 잣나무, 황양목을 심어 하나님이 모든 것의 근원이시며 궁극적으로 모든 것, 심지어 “광야”(19절)라 여겨졌던 곳들까지 구원하실 것임을 “무리가 보고 알게 하려고”(20절) 그렇게 하신 것입니다. 비록 우리가 언덕에서 우리에게 미소 짓는 얼굴을 볼 수는 없을지라도, 모든 창조물은 이 세상과 우리 개인이 처한 상황 속에 역사하시는 하나님의 구원의 능력을 일깨워 줍니다. 심지어 우리의 상황이 황폐함의 여파(혹은 두려움) 속에 있을지라도 말입니다. 그러므로 고난 가운데서도 우리 소망과 기쁨의 근원이 되시는 하나님의 얼굴을 구하도록 합시다.

17 “The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

18 I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs.

19 I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. I will set junipers in the wasteland, the fir and the cypress together,

20 so that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the LORD has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.

17 가련하고 가난한 자가 물을 구하되 물이 없어서 갈증으로 그들의 혀가 마를 때에 나 여호와가 그들에게 응답하겠고 나 이스라엘의 하나님이 그들을 버리지 아니할 것이라

18 내가 헐벗은 산에 강을 내며 골짜기 가운데에 샘이 나게 하며 광야가 못이 되게 하며 마른 땅이 샘 근원이 되게 할 것이며

19 내가 광야에는 백향목과 싯딤 나무와 화석류와 들감람나무를 심고 사막에는 잣나무와 소나무와 황양목을 함께 두리니

20 무리가 보고 여호와의 손이 지으신 바요 이스라엘의 거룩한 이가 이것을 창조하신 바인 줄 알며 함께 헤아리며 깨달으리라
