HUMBLE LEADERSHIP		겸손한 리더십
[ John 1:19 - 1:28 ] - hymn 218 Among you stands one you do not know. . . . the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. [ JOHN 1:26-27 ] My friend Butch Briggs has been the beloved coach for the swim teams at a local high school for fifty-one years. Out of curiosity, I asked him how many state championships he’d won during his five decades. In his trademark gentle tone he quipped, “I’ve not won a single championship because I’ve never swum in a single race.” Trying again, I asked him, “How many championships have your swimmers won?” He happily responded, “Thirty-nine.” Butch taught me a valuable lesson. A coach plays an important role, but he didn’t want to take credit for what his swimmers accomplished. Butch’s humility reminds me of how John the Baptist saw his role. John was tasked with pointing people to Jesus as the Messiah—the one who fulfilled God’s promise to send a rescuer. But John garnered so much attention that the religious leaders wanted to find out exactly who he was. In response, Scripture records that John “confessed freely, ‘I am not the Messiah’ ” (JOHN 1:20). Even when they pressed him, John was clear that his role was to announce Jesus’ arrival (VV. 21-23). Jesus was the one they’d longed for (V. 27). This aspect of humility—not taking more credit than is due—is a way we can keep a proper perspective regarding our accom-plishments while recognizing others for the assignments or roles they’ve been given. SAMRA		[ 요한복음 1:19 - 1:28 ] - 찬송가 218 장 너희 가운데 너희가 알지 못하는 한 사람이 섰으니...나는 그의 신들메 풀기도 감당하지 못하겠노라 [요한복음 1:26-27] 내 친구 부치 브릭스는 51년 동안 한 지역 고등학교의 수영 팀을 이끌고 있는 존경받는 코치입니다. 나는 호기심에 그가 지난 50년동안 주 챔피언십에서 몇 번이나 우승했는지 물어보았습니다. 그 친구는 특유의 부드러운 어조로 “난 한 번도 챔피언십에서 우승한 적이 없어. 경기에 나간 적이 없거든.” 하며 농담을 했습니다. 그래서 나는 다시 이렇게 질문했습니다. “너네 수영 팀이 챔피언십에서 몇 번이나 우승했어?” 이번에는 즐거운 목소리로 “서른 아홉 번”이라고 대답했습니다. 친구 부치는 소중한 교훈을 내게 가르쳐 주었습니다. 코치의 역할은 중요한 것이지만, 그럼에도 그는 자신의 수영 팀이 성취한 업적을 자기가 차지하고 싶지 않았던 것입니다. 부치의 겸손은 세례 요한이 자신의 역할에 대해 말한 것을 생각나게 합니다. 요한은 사람들에게 예수님을 메시아, 곧 구원자를 보내시겠다 하신 하나님의 약속을 성취하신 분으로 알리는 사명을 받았습니다. 하지만 요한에게 너무나 많은 주목이 집중되자 종교지도자들은 그가 정확히 누구인지 알고 싶었습니다. 이에 대한 답으로 성경은 요한이 “드러내어 하는 말이 나는 그리스도가 아니라” (요한복음 1:20)라고 고백했다고 기록하고 있습니다. 그들이 그를 추궁하여도 요한은 자신의 역할이 예수님의 오심을 알리는 것임을 분명히 했습니다(21-23 절). 예수님이 바로 그들이 오랫동안 기다려온 분이셨습니다(27절). 자신에게 지나친 공을 돌리지 않는 이런 겸손의 모습은 우리가 다른 사람들이 맡은 역할과 사명을 인정하면서 동시에 우리의 성취에 대해서도 올바른 시각을 가질 수 있는 방법입니다.

Dear Jesus, please grant me grace to act with the humility You so vividly displayed and modeled for us during Your life and death.

19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’ ”

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent

25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.

27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

겸손을 보이기 어려운 경우는 어떤 것이 있을까요?
성령께서는 우리를 어떻게 겸손히 행하도록 도우실까요?

사랑하는 예수님, 주님의 삶과 죽음을 통해 생생하게 보여주신 그 겸손을 저도 따라 할 수 있는 은혜를 베풀어 주소서.

19 ○유대인들이 예루살렘에서 제사장들과 레위인들을 요한에게 보내어 네가 누구냐 물을 때에 요한의 증언이 이러하니라

20 요한이 드러내어 말하고 숨기지 아니하니 드러내어 하는 말이 나는 그리스도가 아니라 한대

21 또 묻되 그러면 누구냐 네가 엘리야냐 이르되 나는 아니라 또 묻되 네가 그 선지자냐 대답하되 아니라

22 또 말하되 누구냐 우리를 보낸 이들에게 대답하게 하라 너는 네게 대하여 무엇이라 하느냐

23 이르되 나는 선지자 이사야의 말과 같이 주의 길을 곧게 하라고 광야에서 외치는 자의 소리로라 하니라

24 그들은 바리새인들이 보낸 자라

25 또 물어 이르되 네가 만일 그리스도도 아니요 엘리야도 아니요 그 선지자도 아닐진대 어찌하여 세례를 베푸느냐

26 요한이 대답하되 나는 물로 세례를 베풀거니와 너희 가운데 너희가 알지 못하는 한 사람이 섰으니

27 곧 내 뒤에 오시는 그이라 나는 그의 신발끈을 풀기도 감당하지 못하겠노라 하더라

28 이 일은 요한이 세례 베풀던 곳 요단 강 건너편 베다니에서 일어난 일이니라
