[ Matthew 19:23 - 19:26 ] - hymn 488
With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. [ MATTHEW 19:26 ]
I was inspired while reading a historical fiction account of the life of Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of Bethune-Cookman University. The stories of her determination and care for oth-ers led me to read more about her. One account tells how in the early 1900s, she “described” the buildings at her school for young African American women to a wealthy businessman. But when he visited the “campus,” he found only one building. She’d described her dream to him, hoping that he would invest in the school. Her faith and vision worked together to secure funding. Her school eventually became—and still is—a four-year university.
Bethune is credited with saying: “Without faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible.” Her quote is similar to what Jesus told the astonished disciples who were asking ques-tions about salvation. They were trying to figure out how people could “enter the kingdom of God,” or heaven (MATTHEW 19:24). They wanted to know “who then can be saved?” (V. 25). Jesus shared with His followers that faith in God was the only way,
because “with God all things are possible” (V. 26).
Faith is rooted in a belief in God and His abilities. Faith prompts us to believe in the possibility of things we don’t see yet (SEE HEBREWS 11:1)—like a dream of a school for the under-privileged or an eternal home for those who accept Christ. May God help us see what He sees. KATARA PATTON |

사람으로는 할 수 없으나 하나님으로서는 다 하실 수 있느니라 [마태복음 19:26]
나는 베쑨-쿡맨 대학교를 설립한 메리 맥레오드 베쑨의 삶을 다룬 역사 소설을 읽으며 큰 감동을 받았습니다. 베쑨의 굳은 의지와 남을 향한 사랑에 감명을 받고 그분에 대해 더 알아보고 싶어졌습니다. 한 기록에 의하면 1900년대 초 베쑨은 자기 학교의 젊은 흑인 여성들을 위한 건물들에 대해 어느 부유한 사업가에게 “설명을” 했다고 합니다. 하지만 그 사람이 “캠퍼스”라고 했던 곳을 직접 가보니 거기엔 건물이 하나 뿐이었습니다. 베쑨은 그 사업가가 학교에 투자해주기를 바라며 자기의 꿈을 설명했던 것입니다. 그녀의 신념과 비전으로 자금이 마련되어 학교는 마침내 4년제 대학이 되었고 오늘날까지 이어지고 있습니다.
베쑨은 이렇게 말했다고 합니다. “믿음 없이 되는 일은 하나도 없다. 믿음이 있으면 불가능한 것은 없다.” 이 말은 구원에 대해 놀라서 질문하는 제자들에게 예수님이 하신 말씀과도 유사합니다. 제자들은 사람이 어떻게 천국, 곧 “하나님의 나라에 들어가는지” 알고 싶었습니다(마태복음 19:24). 그들은 “그렇다면 누가 구원을 얻을 수 있으리이까?”(25절) 하고 물었습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 하나님을 향한 믿음만이 유일한 방법이라고 가르치시며, 이는 “하나님으로서는 다 하실 수 있기 때문”(26절)이라고 말씀하셨습니다.
믿음은 하나님과 그의 능력에 대한 신앙에 뿌리가 있습니다. 믿음은 우리가 아직 보지 못한 것들의 가능함을 믿게 합니다(히브리서 11:1 참조). 가난한 이들을 위한 학교의 꿈처럼, 그리고 그리스도를 영접하는 이들을 위한 영원한 집이 그런 것입니다. 하나님께서 보시는 것을 우리도 볼 수 있기를 기도합니다. |
