1Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2 And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” 5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6 And the LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech.” 8 So the LORD dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of all the earth.
1처음에 세상에는 언어가 하나뿐이어서, 모두가 같은 말을 썼다. 2 사람들이 동쪽에서 이동하여 오다가, 시날 땅 한 들판에 이르러서, 거기에 자리를 잡았다. 3 그들은 서로 말하였다. “자, 벽돌을 빚어서, 단단히 구워내자.” 사람들은 돌 대신에 벽돌을 쓰고, 흙 대신에 역청을 썼다. 4 그들은 또 말하였다. “자, 도시를 세우고, 그 안에 탑을 쌓고서, 탑 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿게 하여, 우리의 이름을 날리고, 온 땅 위에 흩어지지 않게 하자.” 5 주님께서 사람들이 짓고 있는 도시와 탑을 보려고 내려오셨다. 6 주님께서 말씀하셨다. “보아라, 만일 사람들이 같은 말을 쓰는 한 백성으로서, 이렇게 이런 일을 하기 시작하였으니, 이제 그들은, 하고자 하는 것은 무엇이든지, 하지 못할 일이 없을 것이다. 7 자, 우리가 내려가서, 그들이 거기에서 하는 말을 뒤섞어서, 그들이 서로 알아듣지 못하게 하자.” 8 주님께서 거기에서 그들을 온 땅으로 흩으셨다. 그래서 그들은 도시 세우는 일을 그만두었다. 9 주님께서 거기에서 온 세상의 말을 뒤섞으셨다고 하여, 사람들은 그 곳의 이름을 바벨이라고 한다. 주님께서 거기에서 사람들을 온 땅에 흩으셨다.
