1 Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 Then he came up and told his father and mother, “I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. Now get her for me as my wife.” 3 But his father and mother said to him, “Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?” But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes.” 4 His father and mother did not know that it was from the LORD, for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. At that time the Philistines ruled over Israel. 5 Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. 6 Then the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. 7 Then he went down and talked with the woman, and she was right in Samson’s eyes. 8 After some days he returned to take her. And he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. 9 He scraped it out into his hands and went on, eating as he went. And he came to his father and mother and gave some to them, and they ate. But he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey from the carcass of the lion. 10 His father went down to the woman, and Samson prepared a feast there, for so the young men used to do. 11 As soon as the people saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. 12 And Samson said to them, “Let me now put a riddle to you. If you can tell me what it is, within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes, 13 but if you cannot tell me what it is, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes.” And they said to him, “Put your riddle, that we may hear it.” 14 And he said to them, “Out of the eater came something to eat. Out of the strong came something sweet.” And in three days they could not solve the riddle. 15 On the fourth day they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband to tell us what the riddle is, lest we burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us here to impoverish us?” 16 And Samson’s wife wept over him and said, “You only hate me; you do not love me. You have put a riddle to my people, and you have not told me what it is.” And he said to her, “Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?” 17 She wept before him the seven days that their feast lasted, and on the seventh day he told her, because she pressed him hard. Then she told the riddle to her people. 18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” And he said to them, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found out my riddle.” 19And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father’s house. 20 And Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man.
1삼손이 딤나로 내려갔다가, 딤나에 있는 어떤 블레셋 처녀를 보았다. 2 그가 돌아와서 자기 부모에게 말하였다. “내가 딤나에 내려갔다가, 블레셋 처녀를 하나 보았습니다. 장가들고 싶습니다. 주선해 주십시오.” 3 그러자 그의 아버지와 어머니가 그를 타일렀다. “네 친척이나 네 백성의 딸들 가운데는 여자가 없느냐? 왜 너는 할례도 받지 않는 블레셋 사람을 아내로 맞으려고 하느냐?” 그래도 삼손은 자기 아버지에게 말하였다. “꼭 그 여자를 색시로 데려와 주십시오. 그 여자는 첫눈에 내 맘에 쏙 들었습니다.” 4 그의 부모는, 주님께서 블레셋 사람을 치실 계기를 삼으려고 이 일을 하시는 줄을 알지 못하였다. 그 때에 블레셋 사람이 이스라엘을 지배하고 있었다. 5 삼손이 부모와 함께 딤나로 내려가서, 딤나에 있는 어떤 포도원에 이르렀다. 그런데 갑자기 어린 사자 한 마리가 으르렁거리며 그에게 달려들었다. 6 그 때에 주님의 영이 삼손에게 세차게 내리덮쳤으므로 손에 아무것도 가진 것 없이, 그 사자를 염소 새끼 찢듯이 찢어 죽였다. 그러나 그는 이 일을 부모에게 말하지 않았다. 7 그는 그 여자에게로 내려가, 그와 이야기를 나누었다. 삼손은 그 여자를 무척 좋아하였다. 8 얼마 뒤에 삼손은 그 여자를 아내로 맞으러 그 곳으로 다시 가다가, 길을 벗어나 자기가 죽인 사자가 있는 데로 가 보았더니, 그 죽은 사자의 주검에 벌 떼가 있고 꿀이 고여 있었다. 9 그는 손으로 꿀을 좀 떠다가 걸어가면서 먹고, 부모에게도 가져다 주었으나, 그 꿀이 사자의 주검에서 떠온 것이라고는 말하지 않았다. 10 그의 아버지는 사돈 될 사람의 집으로 갔다. 삼손은, 신랑들이 장가갈 때 하는 풍습을 따라서, 거기에서 잔치를 베풀었다. 11 블레셋 사람들이 그를 보자, 젊은이 서른 명을 데려다가 그와 한 자리에 앉게 하였다. 12 그 때에 삼손이 그들에게 한 제안을 하였다. “내가 여러분에게 수수께끼를 하나 내려고 하는데, 잔치가 계속되는 이레 동안에 알아맞히어 보십시오. 여러분이 알아맞히면 내가 모시옷 서른 벌과 겉옷 서른 벌을 내놓고, 13 맞히지 못하면 여러분이 나에게 모시옷 서른 벌과 겉옷 서른 벌을 주도록 하는 것이 어떻겠습니까?” 그들이 말하였다. “좋습니다! 어디, 그 수수께끼를 한번 들어봅시다.” 14 그래서 삼손이 그들에게 수수께끼를 내놓았다. “먹는 자에게서 먹는 것이 나오고, 강한 자에게서 단 것이 나왔다.” 그러나 그들은 사흘이 지나도록 수수께끼를 풀 수가 없었다. 15 이레째가 되던 날 그들은 삼손의 아내를 을러대었다. “신랑을 꾀어서, 그가 우리에게 낸 그 수수께끼의 해답을 알아내서 우리에게 알려주시오. 그렇지 않으면 새댁과 새댁의 친정 집을 불살라 버리겠소. 우리가 가진 것을 빼앗으려고 우리를 초대한 것은 아니지 않소?” 16 그래서 삼손의 아내는 삼손에게 울며 말하였다. “당신은 나를 미워할 뿐이지, 사랑하지는 않아요. 그러니까 당신이 나의 나라 사람들에게 수수께끼를 내놓고도, 나에게는 해답을 가르쳐 주지 않았지요.” 삼손이 아내에게 말하였다. “이것 봐요. 내 부모에게도 알려드리지 않았는데, 어떻게 당신에게 말할 수 있겠소?” 17 그러나 그의 아내는 삼손에게 이레나 계속되는 잔치 기간에 계속 울면서 졸라댔다. 이레째 되던 날 삼손은 드디어 아내에게 수수께끼의 해답을 말해 버리고 말았다. 그러자 아내가 그 해답을 자기 동족 사람들에게 알려 주었다. 18 이레째 되던 날 해가 지기 전에 그 성읍 사람들이 삼손에게 말하였다. “무엇이 꿀보다 더 달겠으며, 무엇이 사자보다 더 강하겠느냐?” 삼손이 그들에게 대답하였다. “나의 암소로 밭을 갈지 않았더라면, 이 수수께끼의 해답을 어찌 찾았으랴.” 19 그 때에 주님의 영이 삼손에게 세차게 내리덮쳤다. 삼손이 아스글론으로 내려가서 그 곳 주민 서른 명을 죽이고, 그들에게서 노략한 옷을 가져다가, 수수께끼를 푼 사람들에게 주었다. 그리고는 몹시 화가 나서, 자기 아버지의 집으로 돌아가 버렸다. 20 그러자 삼손의 아내는 삼손의 들러리로 왔던 한 친구의 아내가 되었다.
