1As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD. 2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz. 3 They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth. 4 It may be that the LORD your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the LORD your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’” 5 When the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah, 6 Isaiah said to them, “Say to your master, ‘Thus says the LORD: Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the young men of the king of Assyria have reviled me. 7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.’” 8 The Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he had heard that the king had left Lachish. 9 Now the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, “He has set out to fight against you.” And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 “Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my fathers destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?’” 14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD: 16 “O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. 17 Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. 18 Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands, 19 and have cast their gods into the fire. For they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. 20 So now, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are the LORD.”
1히스기야 왕도 이 말을 듣고, 울분을 참지 못하여, 자기 옷을 찢고, 베옷을 두르고, 주님의 성전으로 들어갔다. 2 그는 궁내대신 엘리야김과 서기관 셉나와 원로 제사장들에게 베옷을 두르게 한 뒤에, 이 사람들을 아모스의 아들 예언자 이사야에게 보냈다. 3 그들은 이사야에게 가서, 히스기야 왕의 말씀이라고 하면서, 이렇게 말하였다. “오늘은 환난과 징계와 굴욕의 날입니다. 아이를 낳으려 하나, 낳을 힘이 없는 산모와도 같습니다. 4 주 그대의 하나님께서는 랍사게가 한 말을 다 들으셨을 것입니다. 랍사게는, 살아 계신 하나님을 모욕하려고, 그의 상전인 앗시리아 왕이 보낸 자입니다. 주 그대의 하나님께서 그가 하는 말을 들으셨으니, 그를 심판하실 것입니다. 그대는 여기에 남아 있는 우리들이 구원받도록 기도하여 주십시오.” 5 히스기야 왕의 신하들이 이사야에게 가서 이렇게 말하니, 6 이사야가 그들에게 대답하였다. “그대들의 왕에게 이렇게 전하십시오. 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. ‘앗시리아 왕의 부하들이 나를 모욕하는 말을 네가 들었다고 하여, 그렇게 두려워하지 말아라. 7 내가 그에게 한 영을 내려 보내어, 그가 뜬소문을 듣고 자기 나라로 돌아가게 할 것이며, 거기에서 칼에 맞아 죽게 할 것이다.’” 8 랍사게는, 자기 왕이 라기스를 떠났다는 소식을 듣고 후퇴하여, 립나를 치고 있는 앗시리아 왕과 합세하였다. 9 그 때에 앗시리아 왕은, 에티오피아 왕 디르하가가 자기와 싸우려고 출전하였다는 말을 들었다. 그는 이 말을 듣고, 히스기야에게 사신들을 보내어, 이렇게 말하였다. 10 “우리의 임금님께서 유다 임금 히스기야에게 이렇게 전하라고 하셨습니다. ‘네가 의지하는 너의 하나님께서 예루살렘을 앗시리아 왕의 손에 넘어가게 하지 않으실 것이라고 하여도, 너는 그 말에 속지 말아라. 11 너는, 앗시리아 왕들이 다른 모든 나라를 멸하려고 어떻게 하였는지, 잘 들었을 것이다. 그런데 너만은 구원받을 것이라고 믿느냐? 12 나의 선왕들이 멸망시킨, 고산과 하란과 레셉과, 들라살에 있는 에덴 족을, 그 민족들의 신들이 구하여 낼 수 있었느냐? 13 하맛의 왕, 아르밧의 왕, 스발와임 도성의 왕, 그리고 헤나 왕과 이와 왕들이 모두 어디로 갔느냐?’” 14 히스기야는 사신들에게서 이 편지를 받아 읽었다. 그런 다음에 주님의 성전으로 올라가서, 주님 앞에 편지를 펴놓은 뒤에, 15 주님께 기도하였다. 16 그룹들 위에 계시는 이스라엘의 하나님, 만군의 주님, 주님만이 이 세상의 모든 나라를 다스리시는 오직 한 분뿐이신 하나님이시며, 하늘과 땅을 만드신 분이십니다. 17 주님, 귀를 기울여 들어주십시오. 주님, 눈여겨보아 주십시오. 살아 계신 하나님을 모욕하는 말을 전한 저 산헤립의 망언을 잊지 마십시오. 18 주님, 참으로 앗시리아 왕들이 여러 나라와 그 땅을 마구 짓밟아 버렸습니다. 19 여러 민족이 믿는 신들을 모두 불에 던져 태웠습니다. 그러나 그들은 참 신들이 아니라, 나무와 돌로 만든 것들이기에, 앗시리아 왕들에게 멸망당할 수밖에 없었습니다마는, 20 주 우리의 하나님, 이제 그의 손에서 우리를 구원하여 주셔서, 세상의 모든 나라가, 오직 주님만이 홀로 주 하나님이심을 알게 하여 주십시오.
