15So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. 16 And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God. 17 Moreover, in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah's letters came to them. 18 For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah: and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as his wife. 19 Also they spoke of his good deeds in my presence and reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to make me afraid. 7 :1Now when the wall had been built and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, 2 I gave my brother Hanani and Hananiah the governor of the castle charge over Jerusalem, for he was a more faithful and God-fearing man than many. 3 And I said to them, “Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot. And while they are still standing guard, let them shut and bar the doors. Appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, some at their guard posts and some in front of their own homes.” 4 The city was wide and large, but the people within it were few, and no houses had been rebuilt.
15성벽 공사는 오십이 일 만인 엘룰월 이십오일에 끝났다. 16 우리의 모든 원수와 주변의 여러 민족이 이 소식을 듣고, 완공된 성벽도 보았다. 그제서야 우리의 원수는, 이 공사가 우리 하나님의 도움으로 이루어진 것임을 깨달았다. 그래서 그들은 기가 꺾였다. 17 그 무렵에 유다의 귀족들이 도비야에게 편지를 자주 보내고, 도비야도 그들에게 편지를 보내곤 하였다. 18 도비야는 아라의 아들인 스가냐의 사위인데다가, 도비야의 아들 여호하난도 베레갸의 아들인 므술람의 딸과 결혼하였으므로, 유다에는 그와 동맹을 맺은 사람들이 많았다. 19 그들은, 내 앞에서도 서슴없이 도비야를 칭찬하고, 내가 하는 말은 무엇이든지 다 그에게 일러바쳤다. 그래서 도비야는 나에게 협박 편지를 여러 통 보내서 위협하였다. 7 :1성벽을 다시 쌓고, 문들을 제자리에 단 다음에, 나는 성전 문지기와 노래하는 사람과 레위 사람을 세우고 2 나의 아우 하나니와 성채 지휘관 하나냐에게 예루살렘 경비를 맡겼다. 하나냐는 진실한 사람이고, 남다르게 하나님을 두려워하는 사람이었다. 3 나는 그들에게 일렀다. “해가 떠서 환해지기 전에는 예루살렘 성문들을 열지 말고, 해가 아직 높이 있을 때에, 성문들을 닫고 빗장을 지르도록 하시오. 예루살렘 성 사람들로 경비를 세우시오. 일부는 지정된 초소에서, 일부는 자기들의 집 가까이에서 경비를 서게 하십시오.” 4 성읍은 크고 넓으나, 인구가 얼마 안 되고, 제대로 지은 집도 얼마 없었다.
