1Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,
3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9 But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”
13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

1뱀은, 주 하나님이 만드신 모든 들짐승 가운데서 가장 간교하였다. 뱀이 여자에게 물었다. “하나님이 정말로 너희에게, 동산 안에 있는 모든 나무의 열매를 먹지 말라고 말씀하셨느냐?”
2 여자가 뱀에게 대답하였다. “우리는 동산 안에 있는 나무의 열매를 먹을 수 있다.
3 그러나 하나님은, 동산 한가운데 있는 나무의 열매는, 먹지도 말고 만지지도 말라고 하셨다. 어기면 우리가 죽는다고 하셨다.”
4 뱀이 여자에게 말하였다. “너희는 절대로 죽지 않는다.
5 하나님은, 너희가 그 나무 열매를 먹으면, 너희의 눈이 밝아지고, 하나님처럼 되어서, 선과 악을 알게 된다는 것을 아시고, 그렇게 말씀하신 것이다.”
6 여자가 그 나무의 열매를 보니, 먹음직도 하고, 보암직도 하였다. 그뿐만 아니라, 사람을 슬기롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽기도 한 나무였다. 여자가 그 열매를 따서 먹고, 함께 있는 남편에게도 주니, 그도 그것을 먹었다.
7 그러자 두 사람의 눈이 밝아져서, 자기들이 벗은 몸인 것을 알고, 무화과나무 잎으로 치마를 엮어서, 몸을 가렸다.
8 그 남자와 그 아내는, 날이 저물고 바람이 서늘할 때에, 주 하나님이 동산을 거니시는 소리를 들었다. 남자와 그 아내는 주 하나님의 낯을 피하여서, 동산 나무 사이에 숨었다.
9 주 하나님이 그 남자를 부르시며 물으셨다. “네가 어디에 있느냐?”
10 그가 대답하였다. “하나님께서 동산을 거니시는 소리를, 제가 들었습니다. 저는 벗은 몸인 것이 두려워서 숨었습니다.”
11 하나님이 물으셨다. “네가 벗은 몸이라고, 누가 일러주더냐? 내가 너더러 먹지 말라고 한 그 나무의 열매를, 네가 먹었느냐?”
12 그 남자는 핑계를 대었다. “하나님께서 저와 함께 살라고 짝지어 주신 여자, 그 여자가 그 나무의 열매를 저에게 주기에, 제가 그것을 먹었습니다.”
13 주 하나님이 그 여자에게 물으셨다. “너는 어쩌다가 이런 일을 저질렀느냐?” 여자도 핑계를 대었다. “뱀이 저를 꾀어서 먹었습니다.”

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
The cunning serpent shattered the peace that reigned in the beautiful garden of Eden. It portrayed God as petty and suggested that eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil would not bring death but rather make them like God (vv. 1–5). Driven by greed, the man and woman took the fruit and ate it. Their eyes were opened, but what they saw was not glory—only their shameful nakedness (vv. 6-7). Thus, they hid from God out of fear (vv. 8–13).
간교한 뱀이 아름답고 평화롭던 동산을 무너뜨립니다. 그는 하나님을 옹졸한 분처럼 묘사하며, 선악을 알게 하는 나무의 열매를 먹으면 죽지 않고 하나님처럼 될 수 있다고 장담했습니다(1–5절). 그러나 남자와 여자는 탐욕에 이끌려 열매를 따 먹었고, 그들의 눈이 밝아져 본 것은 영광이 아니라 부끄러운 자신의 모습뿐이었습니다(6-7절). 결국 그들은 하나님을 두려워하여 숨고 말았습니다(8–13절).

What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 7, 10 Though the man and woman heeded the serpent’s words and thought their eyes would be opened to become like God (3:5), what was revealed was only naked shame. When they were obedient to God, their nakedness was nothing to be ashamed about (2:25), but when they disobeyed, their nakedness was covered with shame and fear.
사람은 뱀의 말을 듣고 눈이 밝아져 하나님과 같이 될 줄 알았으나(3:5), 드러난 것은 벌거벗은 수치뿐이었습니다. 순종할 때 벗음은 부끄러움이 아니었지만(2:25), 불순종은 그것을 두려움으로 바꾸었습니다.

Vv. 1-7 All tragedy stems from not knowing God’s Word well and therefore failing to trust it. Do not base your faith on what others say; read the Word for yourself, know it well, and obey it. Remember that distorting the Word or seeking independence from God is at the heart of sin and be ever more vigilant. Only God’s Word keeps us safe.
모든 비극은 하나님의 말씀을 정확히 알지 못하고 신뢰하지 못한 데서 비롯되었습니다. 다른 이의 말에 의존하지 말고 말씀을 직접 읽고 바르게 알고 지켜야 합니다. 말씀을 왜곡하거나 하나님에게서 독립하려는 태도가 죄의 본질임을 기억하고 더욱 주의해야 합니다. 하나님의 말씀만이 우리를 안전하게 지켜 줍니다.

Dear God, grant me strength to hold fast to your Word so that I may overcome temptations of all kinds.
