Summing up


[ Joshua 23:1 - 23:16 ] (Hymn215)

1A long time afterward, when the LORD had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years,
2 Joshua summoned all Israel, its elders and heads, its judges and officers, and said to them, “I am now old and well advanced in years.
3 And you have seen all that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the LORD your God who has fought for you.
4 Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west.
5 The LORD your God will push them back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the LORD your God promised you.
6 Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left,
7 that you may not mix with these nations remaining among you or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them,
8 but you shall cling to the LORD your God just as you have done to this day.
9 For the LORD has driven out before you great and strong nations. And as for you, no man has been able to stand before you to this day.
10 One man of you puts to flight a thousand, since it is the LORD your God who fights for you, just as he promised you.
11 Be very careful, therefore, to love the LORD your God.
12 For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you,
13 know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the LORD your God has given you.
14 “And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.
15 But just as all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you, so the LORD will bring upon you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land that the LORD your God has given you,
16 if you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land that he has given to you.”

1주님께서 주변의 모든 원수를 멸하시어 이스라엘에게 안식을 주신 뒤에, 오랜 세월이 흘러서 Joshua도 나이가 많이 들었고 늙었다.
2 Joshua는 온 이스라엘 곧 장로들과 우두머리들과 재판장들과 관리들을 불러서, 그들에게 말하였다. “나는 나이가 많이 들었고, 이렇게 늙었습니다.
3 당신들은 주 당신들의 하나님이 당신들의 편이 되시어 이 모든 이방 나라에게 어떻게 하셨는지, 그 모든 일을 잘 보셨습니다. 과연 주 당신들의 하나님은 당신들의 편이 되시어 싸우셨습니다.
4 보십시오. 요단 강으로부터 해 지는 지중해까지, 아직 남아 있는 모든 나라와 이미 정복한 모든 나라를, 나는 당신들의 각 지파에게 유산으로 나누어 주었습니다.
5 주 당신들의 하나님이 친히 당신들 앞에서 그들까지 마저 쫓아내실 것입니다. 주님께서 당신들이 보는 앞에서 그들을 몰아내실 터인데, 그 때에 당신들은 주 하나님이 약속하신 그 땅을 소유하게 될 것입니다.
6 그러므로 모세의 율법책에 기록된 모든 것을 아주 담대하게 지키고 행하십시오. 그것을 벗어나 좌로나 우로나 치우치지 마십시오.
7 당신들과 이웃한, 남아 있는 이 나라들과 사귀지 말며, 그 신들의 이름을 부르거나 그 이름으로 맹세하지도 마십시오. 그것을 섬기거나 경배하지도 마십시오.
8 오직 당신들은 지금까지 해 온 대로, 주 당신들의 하나님만 가까이하십시오.
9 주님께서 당신들 앞에서 크고 강한 나라들을 몰아내셨으므로, 지금까지 당신들을 당할 사람이 없었던 것입니다.
10 주 당신들의 하나님이 약속하신 대로 당신들의 편을 들어서 몸소 싸우셨기 때문에, 당신들 가운데서 한 사람이 원수 천 명을 추격할 수 있었던 것입니다.
11 그러므로 삼가 조심하여 주 당신들의 하나님을 사랑하십시오.
12 만일 당신들이 이것을 어기고, 당신들 가운데 살아남아 있는 이 이방 민족들을 가까이하거나, 그들과 혼인관계를 맺으며 사귀면,
13 주 당신들의 하나님이 당신들 앞에서 다시는 이 민족들을 몰아내지 아니하실 것이라는 사실을 분명히 아십시오. 그들이 당신들에게 올무와 덫이 되고, 잔등에 채찍이 되며, 눈에 가시가 되어, 끝내 당신들은 주 당신들의 하나님이 주신 이 좋은 땅에서 멸망하게 될 것입니다.
14 나는 이제 온 세상 사람이 가는 길로 갈 때가 되었습니다. 당신들은 주 하나님이 약속하신 모든 선한 말씀 가운데서 이루어지지 않은 것이 하나도 없음을, 당신들 모두의 마음과 모두의 양심 속에 분명히 알고 있습니다. 그 가운데서 한 말씀도 어김이 없이 다 이루어졌습니다.
15 주 하나님이 약속하신 모든 선한 말씀을 여러분에게 그대로 이루셨지만, 그 반대로 주님께서는 모든 해로운 일도 여러분에게 미치게 하여, 주 하나님이 당신들에게 주신 이 좋은 땅에서 여러분을 없애 버리실 수도 있음을 명심하십시오.
16 그러므로 여러분이, 주 하나님이 여러분에게 지키라고 명하신 언약을 어기고, 가서 다른 신을 섬기고 경배하면, 주님의 진노가 여러분에게 내려, 당신들은 그가 주신 좋은 땅에서 곧 망하게 될 것입니다.”

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
As Joshua was on his deathbed, he called the leaders of the Israelites together to give them his final words. He told them not to associate with the Canaanites, not to intermarry with them, and not to fall into idolatry. He commanded them to remember the God who helped them up to this point, and to love only God as they had always done. He warned that if they did not obey, the Gentile nations around them would become a snare that would destroy Israel (vv. 1-13). Israel had to be careful because God, who fulfilled His every blessing, would also fulfil every curse if Israel broke their covenant (vv. 14-16).
죽음을 앞둔 여호수아가 이스라엘 백성의 지도자들을 불러 마지막 말을 남깁니다. 여호수아는 가나안 사람을 가까이하거나 그들과 통혼하지 말고, 우상숭배에 빠지지 말라고 합니다. 지금까지 이스라엘을 도우신 하나님을 기억하며, 지금까지 해온 대로 하나님만 사랑하라고 명령합니다. 만약 그렇지 않으면 이방 민족이 올무와 덫이 되어 이스라엘을 멸망시킬 거라고 경고합니다(1-13절). 선한 말씀을 다 이루신 하나님은 이스라엘이 언약을 어기면 저주의 말씀도 다 이루실 것이니 이스라엘은 삼가 조심해야 합니다(14-16절).

Who is God?
Vv. 14-16 God fulfils every word He speaks, whether it is good or bad. Obedience produces happiness while disobedience brings about discipline. When the Israelites were obedient, they lived happily in the land of Canaan. When they disobeyed, they were eventually driven out of the land. When you lose your way as God's people, remember that God will discipline and chasten you in love (Heb. 12:6).
선한 말씀이든 불길한 말씀이든 모두 이루십니다. 순종은 행복을, 불순종은 징계를 낳습니다. 이스라엘 백성은 순종할 때 가나안 땅에서 행복하게 살았지만, 불순종하자 결국 그 땅에서 쫓겨났습니다. 하나님 백성다운 삶을 잃어버리면, 하나님이 사랑으로 훈련하고 채찍질하신다는 것(히 12:6)을 잊지 마십시오.
What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 6-13 On his deathbed, Joshua spoke God’s words to the Israelites as though it were his will as they prepared for the complete conquest of Canaan. The time of battling over the land with the sword was over, but now would come a time to wage spiritual war to eradicate pagan religions and customs. Therefore, the Israelites had to take great pains to keep God’s words above all else. There will always be a helping hand for those who delight in the Word and obey it joyfully.
여호수아는 가나안 정복을 앞두고 하나님이 주신 말씀을 유언처럼 남깁니다. 칼로 땅을 정복하는 싸움은 그쳤지만, 이제 가나안 종교와 풍습을 진멸하는 영적 전쟁에 나설 때가 되었기 때문입니다. 그러므로 이스라엘 백성은 무엇보다 말씀 지키는 일에 크게 힘써야 합니다. 말씀을 즐거워하고 기쁘게 순종하는 이들에게는 항상 돕는 손길이 있을 것입니다.
