1Then Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall happen to you in days to come.
2 “Assemble and listen, O sons of Jacob, listen to Israel your father.
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the firstfruits of my strength, preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
4 Unstable as water, you shall not have preeminence, because you went up to your father's bed; then you defiled it—he went up to my couch!
5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords.
6 Let my soul come not into their council; O my glory, be not joined to their company. For in their anger they killed men, and in their willfulness they hamstrung oxen.
7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.
8 “Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down before you.
9 Judah is a lion's cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion and as a lioness; who dares rouse him?
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11 Binding his foal to the vine and his donkey's colt to the choice vine, he has washed his garments in wine and his vesture in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.
13 “Zebulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea; he shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon.
14 “Issachar is a strong donkey, crouching between the sheepfolds.
15 He saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant, so he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant at forced labor.

1야곱이 아들들을 불러 놓고서 일렀다. “너희는 모여라. 너희가 뒷날에 겪을 일을, 내가 너희에게 말하겠다.
2 야곱의 아들들아, 너희는 모여서 들어라. 너희의 아버지 이스라엘이 하는 말에 귀를 기울여라.
3 르우벤아, 너는 나의 맏아들이요, 나의 힘, 나의 정력의 첫 열매다. 그 영예가 드높고, 그 힘이 드세다.
4 그러나 거친 파도와 같으므로, 또 네가 아버지의 침상에 올라와서 네 아버지의 침상을 더럽혔으므로, 네가 으뜸이 되지는 못할 것이다.
5 시므온과 레위는 단짝 형제다. 그들이 휘두르는 칼은 난폭한 무기다.
6 나는 그들의 비밀 회담에 들어가지 않으며, 그들의 회의에 끼어들지 않을 것이다. 그들은 화가 난다고 사람을 죽이고, 장난삼아 소의 발목 힘줄을 끊었다.
7 그 노여움이 혹독하고, 그 분노가 맹렬하니, 저주를 받을 것이다. 그들을 야곱 자손 사이에 분산시키고, 이스라엘 백성 사이에 흩어 버릴 것이다.
8 유다야, 너의 형제들이 너를 찬양할 것이다. 너는 원수의 멱살을 잡을 것이다. 너의 아버지의 아들들이 네 앞에 무릎을 꿇을 것이다.
9 유다야, 너는 사자 새끼 같을 것이다. 나의 아들아, 너는 움킨 것을 찢어 먹고, 굴로 되돌아갈 것이다. 엎드리고 웅크리는 모양이 수사자 같기도 하고, 암사자 같기도 하니, 누가 감히 범할 수 있으랴!
10 임금의 지휘봉이 유다를 떠나지 않고, 통치자의 지휘봉이 자손만대에까지 이를 것이다. 권능으로 그 자리에 앉을 분이 오시면, 만민이 그에게 순종할 것이다.
11 그는 나귀를 포도나무에 매며, 그 암나귀 새끼를 가장 좋은 포도나무 가지에 맬 것이다. 그는 옷을 포도주에다 빨며, 그 겉옷은 포도의 붉은 즙으로 빨 것이다.
12 그의 눈은 포도주 빛보다 진하고, 그의 이는 우유 빛보다 흴 것이다.
13 스불론은 바닷가에 살며, 그 해변은 배가 정박하는 항구가 될 것이다. 그의 영토는 시돈에까지 이를 것이다.
14 잇사갈은 안장 사이에 웅크린, 뼈만 남은 나귀 같을 것이다.
15 살기에 편한 곳을 보거나, 안락한 땅을 만나면, 어깨를 들이밀어서 짐이나 지고, 압제를 받으며, 섬기는 노예가 될 것이다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
On his deathbed, Jacob left a final testament prophesying the futures of his sons. The oldest son, Reuben, was powerful, but he had lost his firstborn privileges by sleeping with his father’s concubine, Bilha, and his tribe would also grow depleted (vv. 3-4; Deut. 33:6). Simeon and Levi were forewarned that they would be scattered because of the ruthless way in which they had avenged Dinah. The tribe of Simeon was eventually assimilated into Judah, while the tribe of Levi became scattered without a land of their own (vv. 1-7). In contrast, as Judah had sacrificed himself for Benjamin, Jacob prophesied that Judah would become royal and gain victory, and the lineage and fruitfulness of the Messiah would come from him. Then, Jacob prophesied the futures of Zebulun and Issachar (vv. 8-15).
야곱은 임종을 앞두고 아들들의 장래를 예언하는 유언을 남깁니다. 맏아들 르우벤은 힘이 있었지만 아버지의 첩 빌하와 동침함으로 맏아들의 자격을 잃고, 그의 지파도 훗날 쇠퇴하게 됩니다(3-4절; 신 33:6). 시므온과 레위는 디나 사건 때 잔혹한 보복을 저질러 흩어질 것이라는 예언을 받고, 실제로 시므온은 유다에 흡수되고 레위는 땅 없이 흩어집니다(1-7절). 반면 유다는 베냐민을 위해 희생한 인물로, 야곱은 그에게 왕권과 승리, 메시아의 계보와 풍요가 이어질 것을 예언합니다. 이어 스불론과 잇사갈의 장래를 예언합니다(8-15절).

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 3-12 We reap what we sow. If we look at Jacob’s prophecies, the futures of his sons were determined by their past. We cannot become protagonists of God’s kingdom in the future, if we ignore God in our lives today. We must live following his word if we wish to fully enjoy his grace and blessing in the future.
심은 대로 거둡니다. 야곱의 예언을 보면, 아들들의 장래는 그들의 과거에 기초해 있습니다. 오늘 하나님을 외면하고 살면서, 내일 하나님 나라의 주역이 될 수 없습니다. 지금 하나님의 말씀을 따라 살아야, 장차 하나님의 은혜와 복을 풍성히 누릴 수 있습니다.

VV. 5-7 Simeon and Levi were cursed for deceiving Shechem and was violently slaughtering his people. Jacob prophesied that they would be divided and scattered. In accordance with his prophecy, the tribe of Levi did not receive a portion of land, but dwelt scattered among the other tribes. We should be enraged by acts of evil, but that anger cannot justify violence and murder. Let’s seek wisdom to control our anger and express it appropriately.
시므온과 레위는 세겜 족속을 속여 잔인하게 죽인 폭력성 때문에 저주를 받습니다. 야곱은 그들이 나뉘고 흩어질 것을 예언합니다. 그의 예언대로 레위는 땅을 분배 받지 못하고 각 지파에 흩어져 살게 됩니다. 악행에 분노하는 것이 마땅하지만, 그 분노가 살인과 폭력을 정당화할 수 없습니다. 분노를 잘 다스리고 적절하게 표현할 수 있도록 지혜를 구합시다.
