[ James 3:13 - 3:18 ] (Hymn414)

13Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.
14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.
15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

13여러분 가운데서 지혜 있고 이해력이 있는 사람이 누구입니까? 그러한 사람은 착한 행동을 하여 그의 행실을 나타내 보이십시오. 그 일은 지혜에서 오는 온유함으로 행하는 것이어야 할 것입니다.
14 여러분의 마음 속에 지독한 시기심과 경쟁심이 있으면 자랑하지 말고, 진리를 거슬러 속이지 마십시오.
15 이러한 지혜는 위에서 내려온 것이 아니라, 땅에 속한 것이고, 육신에 속한 것이고, 악마에게 속한 것입니다.
16 시기심과 경쟁심이 있는 곳에는 혼란과 온갖 악한 행위가 있습니다.
17 그러나 위에서 오는 지혜는 우선 순결하고, 다음으로 평화스럽고, 친절하고, 온순하고, 자비와 선한 열매가 풍성하고, 편견과 위선이 없습니다.
18 정의의 열매는 평화를 이루는 사람들이 평화를 위하여 그 씨를 뿌려서 거두어들이는 열매입니다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
James taught that true wisdom is revealed not through speech or boasting, but through good deeds. The world believes it is wise to try to stand out and boast, but God’s wisdom is revealed through a pure heart and good deeds. In contrast, earthly wisdom leads to jealousy, selfish ambition, and competitiveness, and uses lies and deceit for personal glory. This kind of wisdom gives birth to chaos and wicked fruits. However, wisdom that comes from God is pure and gentle, and it is revealed through a life that sows mercy and peace.
야고보는 참된 지혜가 말이나 자랑이 아니라 착한 행동으로 드러난다고 가르칩니다. 세상은 자신을 돋보이게 하고 자랑하는 것을 지혜롭게 여기지만, 위로부터 오는 지혜는 온유한 마음과 선한 행실로 나타납니다. 반대로 땅에 속한 지혜는 시기심과 경쟁심에서 나오며, 자기를 높이기 위해 거짓과 속임수를 사용합니다. 이런 지혜가 있는 곳에는 혼란과 악한 열매가 맺힙니다. 그러나 하나님으로부터 오는 지혜는 순결하고 친절하며, 자비와 평화를 이루는 삶으로 나타납니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 13, 17-18 Wisdom from above does not lead to self-boasting but is revealed through actions that bring about peace. Pure, gentle, and good deeds are like seeds of peace that build up and unite families and communities. Therefore, we should lay down our self-boasting and competitiveness and practice small deeds that can lead to peace in the places where we stand.
위에서 오는 지혜는 자랑하는 말이 아니라, 평화를 이루는 행동으로 드러납니다. 순결하고 온유하며 착한 행실은 평화를 심는 씨앗과 같아서, 가정과 공동체를 화목하게 세워 갑니다. 그러므로 성도는 자기 자랑이나 경쟁심을 내려놓고, 오늘 내가 있는 자리에서 평화를 만들 수 있는 작은 행동을 실천해야 합니다.

VV. 14-16 When selfish desires and a competitive spirit stir in our hearts, it is wise for us to watch our words and maintain silence for a moment. Jealousy and rivalry can sometimes motivate us to work harder, but if these feelings grow, they can easily lead to the sin of lying or slandering others in order to get ahead. Therefore, the only way to overcome temptation is to resist being led by our desires and letting the Lord’s Word govern our hearts.
시기심과 경쟁심이 생길 때는 말을 조심하고 잠시 침묵하는 것이 좋습니다. 시기심과 경쟁심이 우리로 하여금 더 열심히 하게 만들 때도 있지만, 그 마음이 커지면 상대를 이기고 싶은 욕심 때문에 거짓말하거나 헐뜯는 죄로 이어지기 쉽습니다. 그러므로 욕심에 끌려 다니지 않고, 말씀 안에서 마음을 다스리는 것이 시험을 이기는 길입니다.

Prayer
Lord, help me to put aside any jealousy and rivalry so that I may become a person who sows peace with wisdom from above.
