4These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. 5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground—7then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” 18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
4하늘과 땅을 창조하실 때의 일은 이러하였다. 주 하나님이 땅과 하늘을 만드실 때에, 5 주 하나님이 땅 위에 비를 내리지 않으셨고, 땅을 갈 사람도 아직 없었으므로, 땅에는 나무가 없고, 들에는 풀 한 포기도 아직 돋아나지 않았다. 6 땅에서 물이 솟아서, 온 땅을 적셨다. 7 주 하나님이 땅의 흙으로 사람을 지으시고, 그의 코에 생명의 기운을 불어넣으시니, 사람이 생명체가 되었다. 8 주 하나님이 동쪽에 있는 에덴에 동산을 일구시고, 지으신 사람을 거기에 두셨다. 9 주 하나님은 보기에 아름답고 먹기에 좋은 열매를 맺는 온갖 나무를 땅에서 자라게 하시고, 동산 한가운데는 생명나무와 선과 악을 알게 하는 나무를 자라게 하셨다. 10 강 하나가 에덴에서 흘러나와서 동산을 적시고, 에덴을 지나서는 네 줄기로 갈라져서 네 강을 이루었다. 11 첫째 강의 이름은 비손인데, 금이 나는 하윌라 온 땅을 돌아서 흘렀다. 12 그 땅에서 나는 금은 질이 좋았다. 브돌라라는 향료와 홍옥수와 같은 보석도 거기에서 나왔다. 13 둘째 강의 이름은 기혼인데, 구스 온 땅을 돌아서 흘렀다. 14 셋째 강의 이름은 티그리스인데, 앗시리아의 동쪽으로 흘렀다. 넷째 강은 유프라테스이다. 15 주 하나님이 사람을 데려다가 에덴동산에 두시고, 그 곳을 맡아서 돌보게 하셨다. 16 주 하나님이 사람에게 명하셨다. “동산에 있는 모든 나무의 열매는, 네가 먹고 싶은 대로 먹어라. 17 그러나 선과 악을 알게 하는 나무의 열매만은 먹어서는 안 된다. 그것을 먹는 날에는, 너는 반드시 죽는다.” 18 주 하나님이 말씀하셨다. “남자가 혼자 있는 것이 좋지 않으니, 그를 돕는 사람, 곧 그에게 알맞은 짝을 만들어 주겠다.” 19 주 하나님이 들의 모든 짐승과 공중의 모든 새를 흙으로 빚어서 만드시고, 그 사람에게로 이끌고 오셔서, 그 사람이 그것들을 무엇이라고 하는지를 보셨다. 그 사람이 살아 있는 동물 하나하나를 이르는 것이 그대로 동물들의 이름이 되었다. 20 그 사람이 모든 집짐승과 공중의 새와 들의 모든 짐승에게 이름을 붙여 주었다. 그러나 그 남자를 돕는 사람 곧 그의 짝이 없었다. 21 그래서 주 하나님이 그 남자를 깊이 잠들게 하셨다. 그가 잠든 사이에, 주 하나님이 그 남자의 갈빗대 하나를 뽑고, 그 자리는 살로 메우셨다. 22 주 하나님이 남자에게서 뽑아 낸 갈빗대로 여자를 만드시고, 여자를 남자에게로 데리고 오셨다. 23 그 때에 그 남자가 말하였다. “이제야 나타났구나, 이 사람! 뼈도 나의 뼈, 살도 나의 살, 남자에게서 나왔으니 여자라고 부를 것이다.” 24 그러므로 남자는 아버지와 어머니를 떠나, 아내와 결합하여 한 몸을 이루는 것이다. 25 남자와 그 아내가 둘 다 벌거벗고 있었으나, 부끄러워하지 않았다.
