[ 1 Corinthians 14:1 - 14:19 ] (Hymn217)

1Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
6 Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
7 If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played?
8 And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?
9 So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air.
10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning,
11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.
12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret.
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.
15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.
16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?
17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up.
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

1사랑을 추구하십시오. 신령한 은사를 열심히 구하십시오. 특히 예언하기를 열망하십시오.
2 방언으로 말하는 사람은 사람에게 말하는 것이 아니라, 하나님께 말하는 것입니다. 아무도 그것을 알아듣지 못합니다. 그는 성령으로 비밀을 말하는 것입니다.
3 그러나 예언하는 사람은 사람들에게 말하는 것입니다. 그는 덕을 끼치고, 위로하고, 격려하는 말을 합니다.
4 방언으로 말하는 사람은 자기에게만 덕을 끼치고, 예언하는 사람은 교회에 덕을 끼칩니다.
5 여러분이 모두 방언으로 말할 수 있기를 내가 바랍니다마는, 그보다도 예언할 수 있기를 더 바랍니다. 방언을 누가 통역하여 교회에 덕을 끼치게 해주지 않으면, 방언으로 말하는 사람보다, 예언하는 사람이 더 훌륭합니다.
6 형제자매 여러분, 내가 여러분에게로 가서 방언으로 말하고, 계시나 지식이나 예언이나 가르침을 전하는 방식으로 말하지 않는다면, 여러분에게 무슨 유익이 되겠습니까?
7 피리나 거문고와 같이 생명이 없는 악기도, 각각 음색이 다른 소리를 내지 않으면, 피리를 부는 것인지, 수금을 타는 것인지, 어떻게 알 수 있겠습니까?
8 또 나팔이 분명하지 않은 소리를 내면, 누가 전투를 준비하겠습니까?
9 이와 같이 여러분도 방언을 사용하기 때문에 분명한 말을 하지 않는다면, 그 말이 무슨 뜻인지 남이 어떻게 알겠습니까? 결국 여러분은 허공에다 대고 말하는 셈이 될 것입니다.
10 이 세상에는 수많은 종류의 말이 있습니다. 그러나 뜻이 없는 말은 하나도 없습니다.
11 내가 그 말의 뜻을 알지 못하면, 나는 그 말을 하는 사람에게 딴 세상 사람이 되고, 그도 나에게 딴 세상 사람이 될 것입니다.
12 이와 같이 여러분도 성령의 은사를 갈구하는 사람들이니, 교회에 덕을 끼치도록, 그 은사를 더욱 넘치게 받기를 힘쓰십시오.
13 그러므로 방언으로 말하는 사람은 그것을 통역할 수 있기를 기도하십시오.
14 내가 방언으로 기도하면 내 영은 기도하지만, 내 마음은 아무런 열매를 얻지 못합니다.
15 그렇다면 어떻게 해야 하겠습니까? 나는 영으로 기도하고, 또 깨친 마음으로도 기도하겠습니다. 나는 영으로 찬미하고, 또 깨친 마음으로도 찬미하겠습니다.
16 그렇지 않고, 그대가 영으로만 감사를 드리면, 갓 믿기 시작한 사람은, 그것이 무슨 뜻인지를 알아듣지 못하므로, 어떻게 그 감사 기도에 “아멘” 하고 말할 수 있겠습니까?
17 그대가 훌륭하게 감사 기도를 드린다고 해도, 다른 사람에게는 덕이 되지 않습니다.
18 나는 여러분 가운데 누구보다도 더 많이 방언을 말할 수 있음을 하나님께 감사합니다.
19 그러나 나는, 방언으로 만 마디 말을 하기보다도, 다른 사람을 가르치기 위하여 나의 깨친 마음으로 교회에서 다섯 마디 말을 하기를 원합니다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
The Corinthian church overused and showed off their gift of tongues during service, which caused disorder, and Paul once again reminded them of the principle of love. He said that no gift was better than another, but for the sake of building up the church, the gift of prophecy was more important than the gift of tongues, which benefited the individual (vv. 1-5). Without someone to interpret the messages, speaking in tongues did not benefit the community, and the individual speaking it could only gain so much. So, Paul taught the believers to pray and praise God with a clear mind, and he revealed that even though he could speak in many tongues, he would rather speak five words of a prophesy prophecy for the sake of instructing the church (vv. 6-19).
고린도 교회는 예배 중 방언을 과시하며 남발해 무질서에 빠졌고, 바울은 그들에게 사랑의 원리를 다시 강조합니다. 은사에 우열은 없지만, 공동체의 유익을 기준으로 볼 때 자신에게만 유익한 방언보다 교회를 세우는 예언이 더 중요하다고 말합니다(1-5절). 방언은 통역이 없으면 의미가 전달되지 않아 공동체에 덕이 되지 않으며, 말하는 사람 자신에게도 유익이 제한됩니다. 그래서 바울은 분명한 정신으로 기도하고 찬양해야 한다고 가르치며, 자신은 많은 방언을 말할 수 있지만 교회를 가르치기 위해서는 다섯 마디 예언을 택하겠다고 밝힙니다(6-19절).

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 6-11 Paul always explained in a gentle and thoughtful manner by considering the maturity of the believers he instructed. He could speak more languages than anyone (v. 18) and had more knowledge, but instead of boasting of his knowledge, he focused on teaching the believers to build up the church. Am I considerate of those who hear my words?
바울은 듣는 이의 눈높이를 고려하고, 늘 친절하게 설명했습니다. 그가 누구보다 더 많이 방언을 할 수 있고(18절) 누구보다 많은 지식이 있지만, 자신의 지식을 자랑하기보다 교회의 덕을 세우라는 가르침을 먼저 실천한 것입니다. 내 말은 듣는 이를 배려하고 있습니까?

VV. 3-5, 12, 17 Gifts must be used to build up the church. This is because the purpose of gifts is the benefit of “the common good” (12:7). No matter how much we enjoy or excel at something, we must sometimes exercise restraint if it does not serve the benefit of the community. The common good is more important than using our personal gifts.
은사는 공동체에 덕을 끼치도록 사용해야 합니다. 은사의 목적이 ‘공동 이익’이기 때문입니다(12:7). 아무리 내가 잘하고 좋아하는 일이라도, 공동체 전체를 이롭게 하지 못한다면 절제해야 할 때도 있습니다. 내 은사를 발휘하는 것보다 공동체의 유익이 더 중요합니다.

Lord, help me to prioritize building up the church over pursuing my own benefit.
