[ Genesis 9:18 - 9:29 ] (Hymn384)

18The sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.)
19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the people of the whole earth were dispersed.
20 Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard.
21 He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent.
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside.
23 Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father's nakedness.
24 When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him,
25 he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”
26 He also said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant.
27 May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.”
28 After the flood Noah lived350 years.
29 All the days of Noah were950 years, and he died.

18방주에서 나온 노아의 아들은 셈과 함과 야벳이다. 함은 가나안의 조상이 되었다.
19 이 세 사람이 노아의 아들인데, 이들에게서 인류가 나와서, 온 땅 위에 퍼져 나갔다.
20 노아는, 처음으로 밭을 가는 사람이 되어서, 포도나무를 심었다.
21 한 번은 노아가 포도주를 마시고 취하여, 자기 장막 안에서 아무것도 덮지 않고, 벌거벗은 채로 누워 있었다.
22 가나안의 조상 함이 그만 자기 아버지의 벌거벗은 몸을 보았다. 그는 바깥으로 나가서, 두 형들에게 알렸다.
23 셈과 야벳은 겉옷을 가지고 가서, 둘이서 그것을 어깨에 걸치고, 뒷걸음쳐 들어가서, 아버지의 벌거벗은 몸을 덮어 드렸다. 그들은 아버지의 벌거벗은 몸을 보지 않으려고 얼굴을 돌렸다.
24 노아는 술에서 깨어난 뒤에, 작은 아들이 자기에게 한 일을 알고서,
25 이렇게 말하였다. “가나안은 저주를 받을 것이다. 가장 천한 종이 되어서, 저의 형제들을 섬길 것이다.”
26 그는 또 말하였다. “셈의 주 하나님은 찬양받으실 분이시다. 셈은 가나안을 종으로 부릴 것이다.
27 하나님이 야벳을 크게 일으키셔서, 셈의 장막에서 살게 하시고, 가나안은 종으로 삼아서, 셈을 섬기게 하실 것이다.”
28 홍수가 있은 뒤에도, 노아는 삼백오십 년을 더 살았다.
29 노아는 모두 구백오십 년을 살고 죽었다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
Noah was deemed 'a righteous man, blameless in his generation' and was saved from the flood. Still, one time, drunk with much wine, he lay down in a way that exposed his nakedness. This scene is parallel to the shame Adam and Eve felt after sinning (vv. 18-21). Ham saw his father’s nakedness, mocked him, and told his brothers. But Shem and Japheth did not look upon their father’s shame; instead, they covered him with a garment. Ham’s attitude reminds us of Cain, while Shem and Japheth’s attitude shows what it means to honour our family. When Noah learned of this, he cursed Canaan and blessed Shem and Japheth (vv. 22-29).
노아는 ‘당대에 의롭고 흠이 없는 사람’으로 평가받아 홍수에서 구원받았지만, 포도주에 취해 알몸을 드러낸 채 잠들었습니다. 이는 아담과 하와가 죄를 지은 뒤 벗은 몸을 부끄러워한 장면을 떠올리게 합니다(18-21절). 함은 아버지의 알몸을 보고 조롱하며 두 형제에게 알렸지만, 셈과 야벳은 아버지의 수치를 보지 않고 겉옷으로 덮어 주었습니다. 함의 태도는 가인을 떠올리게 하는 반면, 셈과 야벳의 태도는 가족을 지키는 의로운 모습을 보여 줍니다. 결국 노아는 이 일을 알고 가나안을 저주하고, 셈과 야벳을 축복했습니다(22-29절).

What lesson is God teaching me?
V. 21 Even someone as noble and blessed as Noah can stumble. We also must examine ourselves, lest we forget God’s grace and calling and become intoxicated by the world. We must be careful not to stumble (1 Cor. 10:12) and exercise self-control so we are not overcome by sin (1 Cor. 9:27).
노아처럼 훌륭하고 은혜를 경험한 사람도 한순간에 넘어질 수 있습니다. 우리도 하나님이 주신 은혜와 사명을 잊고 세상에 취해 있지는 않은지 돌아봐야 합니다. 서 있다고 생각할 때 넘어지지 않도록 조심하며(고전 10:12), 죄에 지지 않도록 절제해야 합니다(고전 9:27).

Vv. 22-23 How we deal with others' faults reveals the depth of our faith. Exposing and mocking others’ weaknesses is on par with sin, while covering their shame and preserving their honour is the mark of one who has received God’s grace. If we are covered by God’s grace, that grace should naturally flow forth even in the face of others' faults.
다른 사람의 허물을 대하는 태도는 내 신앙의 깊이를 드러냅니다. 남의 약점을 드러내고 조롱하는 것은 죄의 본성을 따르는 것이고, 그의 수치를 가리고 명예를 지켜 주는 것은 은혜를 입은 사람의 모습입니다. 우리가 은혜로 덮음 받은 자라면, 타인의 허물 앞에서도 자연스레 그 은혜가 흘러가야 할 것입니다.

Prayer
Dear God, help me be a good neighbour by showing consideration for others and covering others' shame and weaknesses rather than mocking them.
