18On the third day Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God: 19 if you are honest men, let one of your brothers remain confined where you are in custody, and let the rest go and carry grain for the famine of your households, 20 and bring your youngest brother to me. So your words will be verified, and you shall not die.” And they did so. 21 Then they said to one another, “In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.” 22 And Reuben answered them, “Did I not tell you not to sin against the boy? But you did not listen. So now there comes a reckoning for his blood.” 23 They did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them. 24 Then he turned away from them and wept. And he returned to them and spoke to them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. 25 And Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, and to replace every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them. 26 Then they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed. 27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money in the mouth of his sack. 28 He said to his brothers, “My money has been put back; here it is in the mouth of my sack!” At this their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?” 29 When they came to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying, 30 “The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us to be spies of the land. 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we have never been spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.’ 33 Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your households, and go your way. 34 Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I shall know that you are not spies but honest men, and I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.’” 35 As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. 36 And Jacob their father said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin. All this has come against me.” 37 Then Reuben said to his father, “Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.” 38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If harm should happen to him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”
18사흘 만에 요셉이 그들에게 말하였다. “나는 하나님을 두려워하오. 당신들은 이렇게 하시오. 그래야 살 수 있소. 19 당신들이 정직한 사람이면, 당신들 형제 가운데서 한 사람만 여기에 갇혀 있고, 나머지는 나가서, 곡식을 가지고 돌아가서, 집안 식구들이 허기를 면하도록 하시오. 20 그러나 당신들은 반드시 막내아우를 나에게로 데리고 와야 하오. 그래야만 당신들의 말이 사실이라는 것을 증명할 수 있을 것이며, 당신들이 죽음을 면할 것이오.” 그들은 그렇게 하기로 하였다. 21 그들이 서로 말하였다. “그렇다! 아우의 일로 벌을 받는 것이 분명하다! 아우가 우리에게 살려 달라고 애원할 때에, 그가 그렇게 괴로워하는 것을 보면서도, 우리가 아우의 애원을 들어 주지 않은 것 때문에, 우리가 이제 이런 괴로움을 당하는구나.” 22 르우벤이 그들에게 대답하였다. “그러기에 내가 그 아이에게 못할 짓을 하는 죄를 짓지 말자고 하지 않더냐? 그런데도 너희는 나의 말을 들은 체도 하지 않았다! 이제 우리가 그 아이의 피값을 치르게 되었다.” 23 그들은, 요셉이 통역을 세우고 말하였으므로, 자기들끼리 하는 말을 요셉이 알아듣는 줄은 전혀 알지 못하였다. 24 듣다 못한 요셉은, 그들 앞에서 잠시 물러가서 울었다. 다시 돌아온 요셉은 그들과 말을 주고받다가, 그들 가운데서 시므온을 끌어내어서, 그들이 보는 앞에서 끈으로 묶었다. 25 요셉은 사람들을 시켜서, 그들이 가지고 온 통에다가 곡식을 채우게 하고, 각 사람이 낸 돈은 그 사람의 자루에 도로 넣게 하고, 또 길에서 먹을 것은 따로 주게 하였다. 요셉이 시킨 대로 다 되었다. 26 그들은 곡식을 나귀에 싣고, 거기를 떠났다. 27 그들이 하룻밤 묵어갈 곳에 이르렀을 때에, 그들 가운데서 한 사람이 자기 나귀에게 먹이를 주려고 자루를 풀다가, 자루 아귀에 자기의 돈이 그대로 들어 있는 것을 보았다. 28 그는 이것을 자기 형제들에게 알렸다. “내가 낸 돈이 도로 돌아왔다. 나의 자루 속에 돈이 들어 있어!” 이 말을 들은 형제들은, 얼이 빠진 사람처럼 떨면서, 서로 쳐다보며 한탄하였다. “하나님이 어찌하여 우리에게 이런 일을 하셨는가!” 29 그들은 가나안 땅으로 아버지 야곱에게 돌아가서, 그 동안 겪은 일을 자세히 말씀드렸다. 30 “그 나라의 높으신 분이 우리를 보더니, 엄하게 꾸짖고, 우리를 그 나라를 엿보러 간 첩자로 여기는 것입니다. 31 그래서 우리는 그에게 ‘우리는 정직한 사람입니다. 우리는 첩자가 아닙니다. 32 우리는 모두 한 아버지의 자식들로서 열두 형제입니다. 하나는 잃고, 또 막내는 가나안 땅에 우리 아버지와 함께 있습니다’ 하고 말씀을 드렸습니다. 33 그랬더니 그 나라의 높으신 분이 우리에게 이르기를 ‘어디, 너희가 정말 정직한 사람들인지, 내가 한 번 알아보겠다. 너희 형제 가운데서 한 사람은 여기에 나와 함께 남아 있고, 나머지는 너희 집안 식구들이 굶지 않도록, 곡식을 가지고 돌아가거라. 34 그리고 너희의 막내아우를 나에게로 데리고 오너라. 그래야만 너희가 첩자가 아니고 정직한 사람이라는 것을 내가 알 수 있겠다. 그런 다음에야, 내가 여기 잡아둔 너희 형제를 풀어 주고, 너희가 이 나라에 드나들면서 장사를 할 수 있게 하겠다’ 하였습니다.” 35 그들은 자루를 비우다가, 각 사람의 자루에 각자가 치른 그 돈 꾸러미가 그대로 들어 있는 것을 보았다. 그들과 그들의 아버지는 그 돈 꾸러미를 보고서, 모두들 겁이 났다. 36 아버지 야곱이 아들들에게 말하였다. “너희가 나의 아이들을 다 빼앗아 가는구나. 요셉을 잃었고, 시므온도 잃었다. 그런데 이제 너희는 베냐민마저 빼앗아 가겠다는 거냐? 하나같이 다 나를 괴롭힐 뿐이로구나!” 37 르우벤이 아버지에게 말하였다. “제가 베냐민을 다시 아버지께로 데리고 오지 못한다면, 저의 두 아들을 죽이셔도 좋습니다. 막내를 저에게 맡겨 주십시오. 제가 반드시 아버지께로 다시 데리고 오겠습니다.” 38 야곱이 말하였다. “막내를 너희와 함께 그리로 보낼 수는 없다. 그 아이의 형은 죽고, 그 아이만 홀로 남았는데, 그 아이가 너희와 같이 갔다가, 또 무슨 변을 당하기라도 하면 어찌 하겠느냐? 너희는, 백발이 성성한 이 늙은 아버지가 슬퍼하며 죽어서 스올로 내려가는 꼴을 보겠다는 거냐?”
