Mighty God at Mount Zion View video
Psalms 48:1 - 48:14
1. Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
2. It is beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth. Like the utmost heights of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the Great King.
3. God is in her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress.
4. When the kings joined forces, when they advanced together,
5. they saw her and were astounded; they fled in terror.
6. Trembling seized them there, pain like that of a woman in labor.
7. You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish shattered by an east wind.
8. As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD Almighty, in the city of our God: God makes her secure forever. Selah
9. Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love.
10. Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11. Mount Zion rejoices, the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments.
12. Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers,
13. consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation.
14. For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.
Reflection
God¡¯s Pervasive Power (48:1–8)
Before Jesus came to dwell among humanity, God dwelt among His people in the temple of Jerusalem on Mount Zion. His power, however, was not limited to the four walls of the sanctuary. His holy presence cast a shield of protection over Jerusalem, and enemy armies dared not approach the city for fear that God¡¯s might and fervor for His people would destroy them. His willingness to abide with His people ensured their safety. The same God who inspired terror in these powerful kings abides with His people today through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. When God is with us, nothing in all creation can stand against us (Rom. 8:31).

A Powerful and Profound Place (48:9–14)
Psalms like this one offer insight into the significance of Jerusalem for the people of God and their faith. The reality of having a fixed place of worship was very important to the Israelites because of the many decades they had spent in slavery in Egypt and then wandering through the desert toward the Promised Land. They fought long and hard to claim this land as their own, and they dreamt of a holy city that would stand for generations. Jerusalem¡¯s very existence is a testimony of God¡¯s favor upon Israel and the fulfillment of His promises. It is a reminder to the people that God will be their protector and guide for ever and ever.
Application
- How can you be confident that God is with you every moment of your life? Take a few minutes to meditate on God¡¯s presence and rejoice in His might and unfailing love.

- Having a tangible reminder of God¡¯s power and goodness can help us focus on Him amid our busy schedules. Is there something in your life that acts as a daily reminder of His unfailing love?
A Letter to God
Almighty God, I know that without the sacrifice of Your Son, I would still be separated from You. Thank you for Your powerful presence that dwells within me and all around me. May Your Spirit call me into deeper praise and worship today. In Jesus¡¯ name. Amen.
