GOD’S COMPASSION		하나님의 긍휼
[ Jonah 3:10 - 4:11 ] - hymn 304 The LORD replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?” [ JONAH 4:4 ] I didn’t like Sadie. My colleague was often rude to me, so I avoided her. So when she heard about an evangelistic meeting in my church and asked if she could go with me, I was indifferent. “I’ll see,” I mumbled. Days passed, and the topic seemed forgotten. But God hadn’t forgotten. I could feel His gaze, waiting for me to reach out to Sadie. One day, while I was praying, a question pervaded my thoughts: Think about your response to Sadie. Is it right? Ouch! The question reminded me of what God asked the prophet Jonah after the people of Nineveh repented: “Is it right for you to be angry?” (JONAH 4:4). Jonah had warned the Ninevites of God’s judgment for their sin (3:1-4). Strangely, however, when they repented and God “did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened” (V. 10), “this seemed very wrong” to Jonah “and he became angry” (4:1). He believed that the cruel enemies of Israel had gotten off easily (VV. 1-3) and deserved punishment. But God corrected Jonah, pointing out his lack of compassion for the Ninevites, who had no true spiritual understanding (VV. 5-11). God, “gracious and compassionate . . . slow to anger and abounding in love” (V. 2), cares about the welfare of all people, no matter what they’ve done. Let’s extend God’s compassion to others too—help-ing them to know and love Him. KAREN HUANG		[ 요나 3:10 - 4:11 ] - 찬송가 304 장 여호와께서 이르시되 네가 성내는 것이 옳으냐 하시니라 [요나 4:4] 나는 동료 새디를 별로 좋아하지 않았습니다. 나를 종종 무례하게 대하는 새디를 일부러 피해다녔습니다. 그래서 새디가 내가 다니는 교회에서 열리는 전도집회 소식을 듣고 자기도 함께 갈 수 있는지 물었을 때, 나는 심드렁하게 “상황봐서요”라며 얼버무렸습니다. 며칠이 지났고 그 일은 잊힌 듯 했지만 하나님은 잊지 않으셨습니다. 나는 새디에게 손 내밀기를 기다리며 지켜보시는 하나님의 시선을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 어느 날 기도를 하는데 내 머릿 속에 한가지 질문이 맴돌았습니다. ‘네가 새디에게 한 대답을 생각해 보아라. 그 말이 과연 옳으냐?’ 아차! 싶었습니다. 이 질문은 니느웨 사람들이 회개한 후 하나님께서 선지자 요나에게 하신 말씀을 떠올리게 했습니다. “네가 성내는 것이 옳으냐?”(요나 4:4). 요나는 니느웨 사람들에게 그들의 죄에 대한 하나님의 심판을 경고했습니다(3:1-4). 하지만 그들이 회개하고 하나님이 “그들에게 내리리라고 말씀하신 재앙을 내리지” 않으셨을 때(10절), 요나는 이상하게도 “매우 싫어하고 성내며”(4:1) 불만을 품었습니다. 그는 이스라엘에게 잔혹했던 원수들이 너무 쉽게 처벌을 면했다고 생각했고(1-3절), 그들이 응당한 벌을 받아야 한다고 믿었던 것입니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 참된 영적 깨달음이 없었던 니느웨 사람들에 대한 요나의 긍휼없는 마음을 지적하시며 그를 바로잡으셨습니다(5-11절). 하나님 께서는 “은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시며 인애가 크시사”(2 절) 사람들이 과거에 무엇을 했든 상관없이 모든 사람들의 안위를 돌보십니다. 우리도 이같이 사람들에게 하나님의 긍휼을 베풀어, 그들이 하나님을 알고 사랑하도록 도웁시다.

Why can it be difficult to show compassion to some people in your life?
How can God help you extend it to them?

Loving Father, please help me to see others the way You do and show them Your compassion.

10. When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

1 But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry.

2 He prayed to the LORD, “Isn't this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.

4. But the LORD replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

6 Then the LORD God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant.

7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered.

8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah's head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”

9 But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” “It is,” he said. “And I'm so angry I wish I were dead.”

10 But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight.

11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”

살면서 어떤 사람들에게 긍휼을 베풀기가 힘든 이유가 무엇입니까?
그들에게 긍휼을 베풀 수 있도록 하나님은 어떻게 당신을 도우실 수 있습니까?

사랑의 하나님 아버지, 하나님의 시선으로 다른 사람들을 바라보며 그들에게 하나님의 긍휼을 베풀 수 있도록 저를 도와주소서.

10. 하나님이 그들이 행한 것 곧 그 악한 길에서 돌이켜 떠난 것을 보시고 하나님이 뜻을 돌이키사 그들에게 내리리라고 말씀하신 재앙을 내리지 아니하시니라

1 요나가 매우 싫어하고 성내며

2 여호와께 기도하여 이르되 여호와여 내가 고국에 있을 때에 이러하겠다고 말씀하지 아니하였나이까 그러므로 내가 빨리 다시스로 도망하였사오니 주께서는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디하시며 인애가 크시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시는 하나님이신 줄을 내가 알았음이니이다

4. 여호와께서 이르시되 네가 성내는 것이 옳으냐 하시니라

6 하나님 여호와께서 박넝쿨을 예비하사 요나를 가리게 하셨으니 이는 그의 머리를 위하여 그늘이 지게 하며 그의 괴로움을 면하게 하려 하심이었더라 요나가 박넝쿨로 말미암아 크게 기뻐하였더니

7 하나님이 벌레를 예비하사 이튿날 새벽에 그 박넝쿨을 갉아먹게 하시매 시드니라

8 해가 뜰 때에 하나님이 뜨거운 동풍을 예비하셨고 해는 요나의 머리에 쪼이매 요나가 혼미하여 스스로 죽기를 구하여 이르되 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 나으니이다 하니라

9 하나님이 요나에게 이르시되 네가 이 박넝쿨로 말미암아 성내는 것이 어찌 옳으냐 하시니 그가 대답하되 내가 성내어 죽기까지 할지라도 옳으니이다 하니라

10 여호와께서 이르시되 네가 수고도 아니하였고 재배도 아니하였고 하룻밤에 났다가 하룻밤에 말라 버린 이 박넝쿨을 아꼈거든

11 하물며 이 큰 성읍 니느웨에는 좌우를 분변하지 못하는 자가 십이만여 명이요 가축도 많이 있나니 내가 어찌 아끼지 아니하겠느냐 하시니라
