As soon as Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own home and country. 26 Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, that I may go, for you know the service that I have given you.” 27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your sight, I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you. 28 Name your wages, and I will give it.” 29 Jacob said to him, “You yourself know how I have served you, and how your livestock has fared with me. 30 For you had little before I came, and it has increased abundantly, and the LORD has blessed you wherever I turned. But now when shall I provide for my own household also?” 31 He said, “What shall I give you?” Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this for me, I will again pasture your flock and keep it: 32 let me pass through all your flock today, removing from it every speckled and spotted sheep and every black lamb, and the spotted and speckled among the goats, and they shall be my wages. 33 So my honesty will answer for me later, when you come to look into my wages with you. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and black among the lambs, if found with me, shall be counted stolen.” 34 Laban said, “Good! Let it be as you have said.” 35 But that day Laban removed the male goats that were striped and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white on it, and every lamb that was black, and put them in the charge of his sons. 36 And he set a distance of three days' journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob pastured the rest of Laban's flock. 37 Then Jacob took fresh sticks of poplar and almond and plane trees, and peeled white streaks in them, exposing the white of the sticks. 38 He set the sticks that he had peeled in front of the flocks in the troughs, that is, the watering places, where the flocks came to drink. And since they bred when they came to drink, 39 the flocks bred in front of the sticks and so the flocks brought forth striped, speckled, and spotted. 40 And Jacob separated the lambs and set the faces of the flocks toward the striped and all the black in the flock of Laban. He put his own droves apart and did not put them with Laban's flock. 41 Whenever the stronger of the flock were breeding, Jacob would lay the sticks in the troughs before the eyes of the flock, that they might breed among the sticks, 42 but for the feebler of the flock he would not lay them there. So the feebler would be Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's. 43 Thus the man increased greatly and had large flocks, female servants and male servants, and camels and donkeys.
25라헬이 요셉을 낳은 뒤에, 야곱이 라반에게 말하였다. “제가 고향 땅으로 돌아갈 수 있도록, 저를 보내 주십시오. 26 장인어른의 일을 해 드리고 얻은 저의 처들과 자식들도, 제가 데리고 가게 허락하여 주십시오. 제가 장인어른의 일을 얼마나 많이 해 드렸는가 하는 것은, 장인어른께서 잘 아십니다.” 27 라반이 그에게 말하였다. “자네가 나를 좋아하면, 여기에 머물러 있기를 바라네. 주님께서 자네를 보시고 나에게 복을 주신 것을, 내가 점을 쳐 보고서 알았네.” 28 라반은 또 덧붙였다. “자네의 품삯은 자네가 정하게. 정하는 그대로 주겠네.” 29 야곱이 그에게 말하였다. “제가 장인어른의 일을 어떻게 해 드리고, 장인어른의 가축 떼를 얼마나 잘 보살폈는지는, 장인어른께서 잘 아십니다. 30 제가 여기에 오기 전에는 장인어른의 소유가 얼마 되지 않았으나, 이제 떼가 크게 불어났습니다. 주님께서는, 제가 하는 수고를 보시고서, 장인어른에게 복을 주셨습니다. 그러나 이제는, 제가 저의 살림을 챙겨야 할 때가 되었다고 봅니다.” 31 라반이 물었다. “그러면 내가 자네에게 무엇을 주면 좋겠는가?” 야곱이 대답하였다. “무엇을 달라는 것이 아닙니다. 다만, 저에게 한 가지 일만 허락하여 주시면, 제가 장인어른의 가축 떼를 계속 먹이고 돌보겠습니다. 32 오늘, 제가 장인어른의 가축 떼 사이로 두루 다니면서, 모든 양 떼에서 얼룩진 것들과 점이 있는 것과 모든 검은 새끼 양을 가려내고, 염소 떼에서도 점이 있는 것들과 얼룩진 것들을 가려낼 터이니, 그것들을 저에게 삯으로 주십시오. 33 제가 정직하다는 것은, 훗날 장인어른께서 저에게 삯으로 주신 가축 떼를 확인하여 보실 때에 증명될 것입니다. 제가 가진 것 가운데서, 얼룩지지 않은 양이나 점이 없는 양이 있든지, 검은 색이 아닌 새끼 양이 있으면, 그것들은 모두 제가 훔친 것이 될 것입니다.” 34 라반이 말하였다. “그러세. 자네가 말한 대로 하겠네.” 35 그러나 라반은 이렇게 말해 놓고서도, 바로 그 날로 숫염소 가운데서 줄무늬가 있는 것과 점이 있는 것을 가려내고, 또 모든 암염소 가운데서도 흰 바탕에 얼룩이 진 것과 점이 있는 것과 모든 검은 새끼 양을 가려내어, 자기의 아들들에게 주었다. 36 그런 다음에 라반은, 야곱이 있는 데서 사흘 길을 더 나가서, 자기와 야곱 사이의 거리를 그만큼 뜨게 하였다. 야곱은 라반의 나머지 양 떼를 쳤다. 37 야곱은, 미루나무와 감복숭아나무와 플라타너스 나무에서 푸른 가지들을 꺾어서 껍질을 벗긴 다음에, 벗긴 가지에 흰 무늬를 냈다. 38 야곱은, 껍질을 벗긴 그 흰 무늬 가지들을 물 먹이는 구유 안에 똑바로 세워 놓고, 양 떼가 와서 물을 먹을 때에, 바로 눈앞에 세워 놓은 그 가지들을 볼 수 있게 하였다. 양들은 물을 먹으러 와서, 거기에서 교미를 하였다. 39 양들은, 껍질 벗긴 그 나뭇가지 앞에서 교미를 하고서, 줄무늬가 있거나 얼룩이 지거나 점이 있는 양을 낳았다. 40 야곱은 이런 새끼 양들을 따로 떼어 놓았다. 라반의 가축 떼 가운데서, 줄무늬가 있거나 검은 양들은 다 가려냈다. 야곱은 이렇게 자기 가축 떼를 따로 가려내서, 라반의 가축 떼와 섞이지 않게 하였다. 41 야곱은, 튼튼한 암컷들이 교미할 때에는, 물 먹이는 구유에 껍질 벗긴 가지들을 놓아서, 그 가지 앞에서 교미하도록 하곤 하였다. 42 그러나 약한 것들이 교미할 때에는, 그 가지들을 거기에 놓지 않았다. 그래서 약한 것들은 라반에게로 가게 하고, 튼튼한 것들은 야곱에게로 오게 하였다. 43 이렇게 하여, 야곱은 아주 큰 부자가 되었다. 야곱은 가축 떼뿐만 아니라, 남종과 여종, 낙타와 나귀도 많이 가지게 되었다.
