18They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. 19 They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. 20 Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.” 21 But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24 And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it. 25 Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. 26 Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him. 28 Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt. 29 When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes 30 and returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is gone, and I, where shall I go?” 31 Then they took Joseph's robe and slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. 32 And they sent the robe of many colors and brought it to their father and said, “This we have found; please identify whether it is your son's robe or not.” 33 And he identified it and said, “It is my son's robe. A fierce animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces.” 34 Then Jacob tore his garments and put sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son many days. 35 All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, “No, I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” Thus his father wept for him. 36 Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.
18그런데 그의 형들은 멀리서 그를 알아보고서, 그를 죽여 버리려고, 그가 그들에게 가까이 오기 전에 음모를 꾸몄다. 19 그들은 서로 마주 보면서 말하였다. “야, 저기 꿈꾸는 녀석이 온다. 20 자, 저 녀석을 죽여서, 아무 구덩이에나 던져 넣고, 사나운 들짐승이 잡아먹었다고 하자. 그리고 그 녀석의 꿈이 어떻게 되나 보자.” 21 르우벤이 이 말을 듣고서, 그들의 손에서 요셉을 건져 내려고, 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. “목숨만은 해치지 말자. 22 피는 흘리지 말자. 여기 들판에 있는 구덩이에 그 아이를 던져 넣기만 하고, 그 아이에게 손을 대지는 말자.” 르우벤은 요셉을 그들에게서 건져 내서 아버지에게 되돌려 보낼 생각으로 이렇게 말한 것이다. 23 요셉이 형들에게로 오자, 그들은 그의 옷 곧 그가 입은 화려한 옷을 벗기고, 24 그를 들어서 구덩이에 던졌다. 그 구덩이는 비어 있고, 그 안에는 물이 없었다. 25 그들이 앉아서 밥을 먹고 있는데, 고개를 들고 보니, 마침 이스마엘 상인 한 떼가 길르앗으로부터 오는 것이 눈에 띄었다. 낙타에다 향품과 유향과 몰약을 싣고, 이집트로 내려가는 길이었다. 26 유다가 형제들에게 말하였다. “우리가 동생을 죽이고 그 아이의 피를 덮는다고 해서, 우리가 얻는 것이 무엇이냐? 27 자, 우리는 그 아이에게 손을 대지는 말고, 차라리 그 아이를 이스마엘 사람들에게 팔아넘기자. 아무래도 그 아이는 우리의 형제요, 우리의 피붙이이다.” 형제들은 유다의 말을 따르기로 하였다. 28 그래서 미디안 상인들이 지나갈 때에, 형제들이 요셉을 구덩이에서 꺼내어, 이스마엘 사람들에게 은 스무 냥에 팔았다. 그들은 그를 이집트로 데리고 갔다. 29 르우벤이 구덩이로 돌아와 보니, 요셉이 거기에 없었다. 그는 슬픈 나머지 옷을 찢고서, 30 형제들에게 돌아와서 말하였다. “그 아이가 없어졌다! 나는 이제 어디로 가야 한단 말이냐?” 31 그들은 숫염소 한 마리를 죽이고, 요셉의 옷을 가지고 가서, 거기에 피를 묻혔다. 32 그들은 피 묻은 그 화려한 옷을 아버지에게로 가지고 가서 말하였다. “우리가 이 옷을 주웠습니다. 이것이 아버지의 아들의 옷인지, 잘 살펴보시기 바랍니다.” 33 그가 그 옷을 알아보고서 부르짖었다. “내 아들의 옷이다! 사나운 들짐승이 그 아이를 잡아먹었구나. 요셉은 찢겨서 죽은 것이 틀림없다.” 34 야곱은 슬픈 나머지 옷을 찢고, 베옷을 걸치고, 아들을 생각하면서, 여러 날을 울었다. 35 그의 아들딸들이 모두 나서서 그를 위로하였지만, 그는 위로받기를 마다하면서 탄식하였다. “아니다. 내가 울면서, 나의 아들이 있는 스올로 내려가겠다.” 아버지는 잃은 자식을 생각하면서 울었다. 36 그리고 미디안 사람들은 이집트에서 요셉을 보디발이라는 사람에게 팔았다. 그는 바로의 신하로서, 경호대장으로 있는 사람이었다.
