1On that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people. And in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God, 2 for they did not meet the people of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them—yet our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 As soon as the people heard the law, they separated from Israel all those of foreign descent. 4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and who was related to Tobiah, 5 prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously put the grain offering, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests. 6 While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king 7 and came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. 8 And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber. 9 Then I gave orders, and they cleansed the chambers, and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense. 10 I also found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each to his field. 11 So I confronted the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations. 12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses. 13 And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service.
1그 날, 백성에게 모세의 책을 읽어 주었는데, 거기에서 그들은 다음과 같이 적혀 있는 것을 발견하였다. “암몬 사람과 모압 사람은 영원히 하나님의 총회에 참석하지 못한다. 2 그들은 먹을 것과 마실 것을 가지고 와서 이스라엘 자손을 맞아들이기는커녕, 오히려 발람에게 뇌물을 주어서, 우리가 저주를 받도록 빌게 하였다. 그러나 우리 하나님은 그 저주를 바꾸어 복이 되게 하셨다.” 3 백성은 이 율법의 말씀을 듣고, 섞여서 사는 이방 무리를 이스라엘 가운데서 모두 분리시켰다. 4 이 일이 있기 전이다. 우리 하나님 성전의 방들을 맡고 있는 엘리아십 제사장은 도비야와 가까이 지내는 사이이다. 5 그런데 그가 도비야에게 큰 방 하나를 내주었다. 그 방은 처음부터 곡식제물과 유향과 그릇과, 레위 사람들과 노래하는 사람들과 성전 문지기들에게 주려고 십일조로 거두어들인 곡식과 새 포도주와 기름과, 제사장들의 몫으로 바친 제물을 두는 곳이다. 6 이 모든 일은, 내가 예루살렘을 비웠을 때에 일어났다. 나는 바빌론 왕 아닥사스다 삼십이년에 왕을 뵈러 갔다가, 얼마가 지나서 왕에게 말미를 얻어, 7 예루살렘으로 다시 돌아와서야, 엘리아십이 하나님의 성전 뜰 안에 도비야가 살 방을 차려 준 이 악한 일을 알게 되었다. 8 나는 몹시 화가 나서, 도비야가 쓰는 방의 세간을 다 바깥으로 내던지고, 9 말하였다. “그 방을 깨끗하게 치운 다음에, 하나님의 성전 그릇들과 곡식제물과 유향을 다시 그리로 들여다 놓아라.” 10 내가 또 알아보니, 레위 사람들은 그 동안에 받을 몫을 받지 못하고 있었다. 그래서 레위 사람들과 노래하는 사람들은 맡은 일을 버리고, 저마다 밭이 있는 곳으로 떠났다. 11 그래서 나는, 어쩌자고 하나님의 성전을 이렇게 내버려 두었느냐고 관리들을 꾸짖고, 곧 레위 사람들을 불러 모아서 다시 일을 맡아 보게 하였다. 12 그랬더니, 온 유다 사람들이 곡식과 새 포도주와 기름의 십일조를 가지고 와서, 창고에 들여다 놓았다. 13 나는 셀레먀 제사장과 사독 서기관과 레위 사람 브다야를 창고 책임자로 삼고, 맛다니야의 손자이며 삭굴의 아들인 하난을 버금 책임자로 삼았다. 그들은 모두 정직하다고 인정을 받는 사람들이다. 그들이 맡은 일은, 동료들에게 돌아갈 몫을 골고루 나누어 주는 일이었다. 14 “하나님, 내가 한 일을 기억하여 주십시오. 하나님의 성전을 보살핀 일과, 예배를 드릴 수 있도록 정성껏 한 이 일을 잊지 마십시오.”
