46When all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith. 47 Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.” 49 So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about1,000 men and women. 50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women and all the leaders of the city fled to it and shut themselves in, and they went up to the roof of the tower. 52 And Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 And a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull. 54 Then he called quickly to the young man his armor-bearer and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” And his young man thrust him through, and he died. 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, everyone departed to his home. 56 Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers. 57 And God also made all the evil of the men of Shechem return on their heads, and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
46세겜 망대에 있던 성읍 지도자들이 모두 이 소식을 듣고, 엘브릿 신전에 있는 지하 동굴로 피하였다. 47 아비멜렉은, 세겜 망대에 있던 사람들이 모두 지하 동굴에 모여 있다는 소식을 들었다. 48 아비멜렉은 군대를 모두 이끌고 살몬 산으로 올라갔다. 아비멜렉은 손에 도끼를 들고서, 나뭇가지들을 찍어 어깨에 메고, 그와 함께 있는 백성에게 지시하였다. “내가 하는 것을 보았으니, 너희도 빨리 그대로 하여라.” 49 그래서 저마다 나뭇가지들을 찍어가지고 아비멜렉을 따라가서, 지하 동굴 앞에 나무를 쌓아 놓고, 그 지하 동굴에 있는 사람들 쪽으로 불을 질렀다. 이렇게 해서 세겜 망대에 있던 성읍 사람들도 모두 죽었는데, 죽은 남녀가 천 명쯤 되었다. 50 그 뒤에 아비멜렉은 데베스로 갔다. 그는 데베스에 진을 치고, 그 곳을 점령하였다. 51 그러나 그 성읍 안에는 견고한 망대가 하나 있어서, 남녀 할 것 없이 온 성읍 사람들이 그 곳으로 도망하여, 성문을 걸어 잠그고 망대 꼭대기로 올라갔다. 52 아비멜렉은 그 망대에 이르러 공격에 나섰고, 망대 문에 바짝 다가가서 불을 지르려고 하였다. 53 그러나 그 때에 한 여인이 맷돌 위짝을 아비멜렉의 머리에 내리던져, 그의 두개골을 부숴 버렸다. 54 아비멜렉은 자기의 무기를 들고 다니는 젊은 병사를 급히 불러, 그에게 지시하였다. “네 칼을 뽑아 나를 죽여라! 사람들이 나를 두고, 여인이 그를 죽였다는 말을 할까 두렵다.” 그 젊은 병사가 아비멜렉을 찌르니, 그가 죽었다. 55 이스라엘 사람들은 아비멜렉이 죽은 것을 보고, 저마다 자기가 사는 곳으로 떠나갔다. 56 하나님은 아비멜렉에게 자기 형제 일흔 명을 죽여 자기 아버지에게 저지른 죄의 값을 이렇게 갚으셨고, 57 또 세겜 사람들의 죄악도 그들에게 모두 갚으셨다. 여룹바알의 아들 요담의 저주가 이렇게 그들에게 그대로 이루어졌다.
