1Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” 12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
1유월절 전에 예수께서는, 자기가 이 세상을 떠나서 아버지께로 가야 할 때가 된 것을 아시고, 세상에 있는 자기의 사람들을 사랑하시되, 끝까지 사랑하셨다. 2 저녁을 먹을 때에, 악마가 이미 시몬 가룟의 아들 유다의 마음 속에 예수를 팔아 넘길 생각을 불어넣었다. 3 예수께서는, 아버지께서 모든 것을 자기 손에 맡기신 것과 자기가 하나님께로부터 왔다가 하나님께로 돌아간다는 것을 아시고, 4 잡수시던 자리에서 일어나서, 겉옷을 벗고, 수건을 가져다가 허리에 두르셨다. 5 그리고 대야에 물을 담아다가, 제자들의 발을 씻기시고, 그 두른 수건으로 닦아주셨다. 6 시몬 베드로의 차례가 되었다. 이 때에 베드로가 예수께 말하였다. “주님, 주님께서 내 발을 씻기시렵니까?” 7 예수께서 그에게 대답하셨다. “내가 하는 일을 지금은 네가 알지 못하나, 나중에는 알게 될 것이다.” 8 베드로가 다시 예수께 말하였다. “아닙니다. 내 발은 절대로 씻기지 못하십니다.” 예수께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 너를 씻기지 아니하면, 너는 나와 상관이 없다.” 9 그러자 시몬 베드로는 예수께 이렇게 말하였다. “주님, 내 발뿐만이 아니라, 손과 머리까지도 씻겨 주십시오.” 10 예수께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. “이미 목욕한 사람은 온 몸이 깨끗하니, 발 밖에는 더 씻을 필요가 없다. 너희는 깨끗하다. 그러나, 다 그런 것은 아니다.” 11 예수께서는 자기를 팔아 넘길 사람을 알고 계셨다. 그러므로 “너희가 다 깨끗한 것은 아니다” 하고 말씀하신 것이다. 12 예수께서 제자들의 발을 씻겨주신 뒤에, 옷을 입으시고 식탁에 다시 앉으셔서, 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 너희에게 한 일을 알겠느냐? 13 너희가 나를 선생님 또는 주님이라고 부르는데, 그것은 옳은 말이다. 내가 사실로 그러하다. 14 주이며 선생인 내가 너희의 발을 씻겨 주었으니, 너희도 서로 남의 발을 씻겨 주어야 한다. 15 내가 너희에게 한 것과 같이, 너희도 이렇게 하라고, 내가 본을 보여 준 것이다. 16 내가 진정으로 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 종이 주인보다 높지 않으며, 보냄을 받은 사람이 보낸 사람보다 높지 않다. 17 너희가 이것을 알고 그대로 하면, 복이 있다.
