1Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. 6 The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.” 8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” 10 And the LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 Then the LORD said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. 17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. 19 And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. 23 Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. 24 If Cain's revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech's is seventy-sevenfold.” 25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.
1아담이 자기 아내 하와와 동침하니, 아내가 임신하여, 가인을 낳았다. 하와가 말하였다. “주님의 도우심으로, 내가 남자 아이를 얻었다.” 2 하와는 또 가인의 아우 아벨을 낳았다. 아벨은 양을 치는 목자가 되고, 가인은 밭을 가는 농부가 되었다. 3 세월이 지난 뒤에, 가인은 땅에서 거둔 곡식을 주님께 제물로 바치고, 4 아벨은 양 떼 가운데서 맏배의 기름기를 바쳤다. 주님께서 아벨과 그가 바친 제물은 반기셨으나, 5 가인과 그가 바친 제물은 반기지 않으셨다. 그래서 가인은 몹시 화가 나서, 얼굴빛이 달라졌다. 6 주님께서 가인에게 말씀하셨다. “어찌하여 네가 화를 내느냐? 얼굴빛이 달라지는 까닭이 무엇이냐? 7 네가 올바른 일을 하였다면, 어찌하여 얼굴빛이 달라지느냐? 네가 올바르지 못한 일을 하였으니, 죄가 너의 문에 도사리고 앉아서, 너를 지배하려고 한다. 너는 그 죄를 잘 다스려야 한다.” 8 가인이 아우 아벨에게 말하였다. “우리, 들로 나가자.” 그들이 들에 있을 때에, 가인이 그의 아우 아벨을 쳐 죽였다. 9 주님께서 가인에게 물으셨다. “너의 아우 아벨이 어디에 있느냐?” 그가 대답하였다. “모릅니다. 제가 아우를 지키는 사람입니까?” 10 주님께서 말씀하셨다. “네가 무슨 일을 저질렀느냐? 너의 아우의 피가 땅에서 나에게 울부짖는다. 11 이제 네가 땅에서 저주를 받을 것이다. 땅이 그 입을 벌려서, 너의 아우의 피를 너의 손에서 받아 마셨다. 12 네가 밭을 갈아도, 땅이 이제는 너에게 효력을 더 나타내지 않을 것이다. 너는 이 땅 위에서 쉬지도 못하고, 떠돌아다니게 될 것이다.” 13 가인이 주님께 말씀드렸다. “이 형벌은, 제가 짊어지기에 너무 무겁습니다. 14 오늘 이 땅에서 저를 쫓아내시니, 하나님을 뵙지도 못하고, 이 땅 위에서 쉬지도 못하고, 떠돌아다니게 될 것입니다. 그렇게 되면, 저를 만나는 사람마다 저를 죽이려고 할 것입니다.” 15 주님께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. “그렇지 않다. 가인을 죽이는 자는 일곱 갑절로 벌을 받을 것이다.” 주님께서는 가인에게 표를 찍어 주셔서, 어느 누가 그를 만나더라도, 그를 죽이지 못하게 하셨다. 16 가인은 주님 앞을 떠나서, 에덴의 동쪽 놋 땅에서 살았다. 17 가인이 자기 아내와 동침하니, 아내가 임신하여 에녹을 낳았다. 그 때에 가인은 도시를 세우고, 그 도시를 자기 아들의 이름을 따서 에녹이라고 하였다. 18 에녹은 이랏을 낳고, 이랏은 므후야엘을 낳고, 므후야엘은 므드사엘을 낳고, 므드사엘은 라멕을 낳았다. 19 라멕은 두 아내와 함께 살았다. 한 아내의 이름은 아다이고, 또 한 아내의 이름은 씰라이다. 20 아다는 야발을 낳았는데, 그는 장막을 치고 살면서, 집짐승을 치는 사람의 조상이 되었다. 21 그의 아우의 이름은 유발인데, 유발은 수금을 타고 퉁소를 부는 모든 사람의 조상이 되었다. 22 또한 씰라는 두발가인이라는 아이를 낳았다. 그는 구리나 쇠를 가지고, 온갖 기구를 만드는 사람이다. 두발가인에게는 나아마라고 하는 누이가 있었다. 23 라멕이 자기 아내들에게 말하였다. “아다와 씰라는 내 말을 들어라. 라멕의 아내들은, 내가 말할 때에 귀를 기울여라. 나에게 상처를 입힌 남자를 내가 죽였다. 나를 상하게 한 젊은 남자를 내가 죽였다. 24 가인을 해친 벌이 일곱 갑절이면, 라멕을 해치는 벌은 일흔일곱 갑절이다.” 25 아담이 다시 자기 아내와 동침하였다. 마침내, 그의 아내가 아들을 낳고 말하였다. “하나님이, 가인에게 죽은 아벨 대신에, 다른 씨를 나에게 허락하셨구나.” 그의 아내는 아이의 이름을 셋이라고 하였다. 26 셋도 아들을 낳고, 아이의 이름을 에노스라고 하였다. 그 때에 비로소, 사람들이 주님의 이름을 불러 예배하기 시작하였다.
