Jotham’s Parable and Curse 요담의 우화와 저주

Summing up


[ Judges 9:7 - 9:21 ] (Hymn290)

7When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim and cried aloud and said to them, “Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, that God may listen to you.
8 The trees once went out to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’
9 But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my abundance, by which gods and men are honored, and go hold sway over the trees?’
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and reign over us.’
11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit and go hold sway over the trees?’
12 And the trees said to the vine, ‘You come and reign over us.’
13 But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my wine that cheers God and men and go hold sway over the trees?’
14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come and reign over us.’
15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade, but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’
16 “Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deeds deserved—17for my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian,
18 and you have risen up against my father’s house this day and have killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the leaders of Shechem, because he is your relative—19if you then have acted in good faith and integrity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.
20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the leaders of Shechem and from Beth-millo and devour Abimelech.”
21 And Jotham ran away and fled and went to Beer and lived there, because of Abimelech his brother.

7사람들이 이 소식을 요담에게 전하니, 그가 그리심 산 꼭대기에 올라가 서서, 큰소리로 그들에게 외쳤다. “세겜 성읍 사람들은 내 말을 들으십시오. 그래야 하나님이 여러분의 청을 들어주실 것입니다.
8 하루는 나무들이 기름을 부어 자기들의 왕을 세우려고 길을 나섰습니다. 그들은 올리브 나무에게 가서 말하였습니다. ‘네가 우리의 왕이 되어라.’
9 그러나 올리브 나무는 그들에게 대답하였습니다. ‘내가 어찌 하나님과 사람을 영화롭게 하는, 이 풍성한 기름 내는 일을 그만두고 가서, 다른 나무들 위에서 날뛰겠느냐?’
10 그래서 나무들은 무화과나무에게 말하였습니다. ‘네가 와서 우리의 왕이 되어라.’
11 그러나 무화과나무도 그들에게 대답하였습니다. ‘내가 어찌 달고 맛있는 과일맺기를 그만두고 가서, 다른 나무들 위에서 날뛰겠느냐?’
12 그래서 나무들은 포도나무에게 말하였습니다. ‘네가 와서 우리의 왕이 되어라.’
13 그러나 포도나무도 그들에게 대답하였습니다. ‘내가 어찌 하나님과 사람을 즐겁게 하는 포도주 내는 일을 그만두고 가서, 다른 나무들 위에서 날뛰겠느냐?’
14 그래서 모든 나무들은 가시나무에게 말하였습니다. ‘네가 와서 우리의 왕이 되어라.’
15 그러자 가시나무가 나무들에게 말하였습니다. ‘너희가 정말로 나에게 기름을 부어, 너희의 왕으로 삼으려느냐? 그렇다면, 와서 나의 그늘 아래로 피하여 숨어라. 그렇게 하지 않으면, 이 가시덤불에서 불이 뿜어 나와서 레바논의 백향목을 살라 버릴 것이다.’
16 이제 여러분이 아비멜렉을 세워 왕으로 삼았으니, 이 일이 어찌 옳고 마땅하다고 할 수 있겠습니까? 이 일이 어찌 여룹바알과 그 집안에게 고마움을 표시하는 일이라고 하겠으며, 그가 이룬 업적에 보답하는 것이라 하겠습니까?
17 나의 아버지가 여러분을 살리려고 싸웠으며, 생명을 잃을 위험을 무릅쓰고 여러분을 미디안 사람들의 손에서 구하여 내지 않았습니까?
18 그런데도 이제 여러분은 나의 아버지의 집을 대적하여 일어나, 일흔 명이나 되는 그의 아들들을 한 바위 위에서 죽이고, 우리 아버지의 여종의 아들 아비멜렉을 여러분의 혈육이라고 하여서, 오늘 세겜 성읍 사람을 다스릴 왕으로 삼았습니다.
19 여러분이 오늘 여룹바알과 그 집안에게 한 일이 옳고 마땅하다면, 여러분은 아비멜렉과 더불어 기쁨을 누리고, 그도 여러분과 더불어 기쁨을 누리게 하십시오.
20 그러나 그렇지 않다면, 아비멜렉에게서 불이 뿜어 나와서 세겜 성읍 사람들과 밀로의 집안을 살라 버릴 것이며, 세겜 성읍 사람들과 밀로의 집안에서도 불이 뿜어 나와서 아비멜렉을 살라 버릴 것입니다.”
21 요담은 도망하여 브엘로 가서 피하였다. 그는 자기의 형 아비멜렉이 두려워서, 거기에 머물러 살았다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
Jotham, the only son of Gideon who survived, went up Mount Gerizim and proclaimed a curse upon the people of Shechem. Through the parable of a tree, he argued that Abimelech was not fit to be a king but was like a bramble that pierced and harmed people. Jotham accused the people of Shechem of repaying Gideon’s grace with evil by appointing Abimelech as king. By helping Abimelech, they had participated in killing the 70 sons of Gideon. Jotham cursed Abimelech and the people of Shechem to become a fire that consumed one another.
기드온의 아들들 가운데 홀로 살아남은 요담은 그리심산에 올라 세겜 사람들에게 저주를 선포합니다. 그는 나무들의 비유를 통해 아비멜렉이 왕의 자격을 갖춘 사람이 아니라, 사람을 찌르고 해를 끼치는 가시나무와 같다고 말합니다. 요담은 세겜 사람들이 아비멜렉을 왕으로 세운 일이 기드온의 은혜를 악으로 갚은 것이라고 지적합니다. 그들은 아비멜렉을 도와 기드온의 아들 70명을 죽이는 일에 동참했습니다. 요담은 결국 아비멜렉과 세겜 사람들이 서로를 태우는 불이 될 것이라고 저주합니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 7-15 Jotham’s parable reminds us of the calling of God’s people. The olive tree, fig tree, and the vine each use their fruit to benefit God and others. But the bramble oppresses people with its thorns. The money, abilities and positions we possess are not means for us to rise above others. God gave them to us to serve others.
요담의 우화는 하나님 백성의 소명을 일깨워 줍니다. 올리브나무, 무화과나무, 포도나무는 각기 자기 열매로 하나님과 사람을 유익하게 합니다. 반면 가시나무는 자기 가시로 사람을 지배하고 억압합니다. 우리가 가진 돈, 재능, 지위는 다른 사람보다 높아지기 위한 수단이 아닙니다. 하나님이 이웃을 섬기라고 주신 것입니다.

VV. 16-21 If we abandon the truth and righteousness for our selfish desires, we will pay the price. The people of Shechem supported Abimelech and made him king for their own gain. However, Jotham said that the people of Shechem and Abimelech would all be destroyed. We must pursue righteousness and truth rather than trying to satisfy our greed.
이기심 때문에 진실과 의를 저버리면 그에 상응하는 대가를 치르게 됩니다. 세겜 사람들은 자기들의 이익을 위해 아비멜렉에게 동조하고 그를 왕으로 세웠습니다. 그러나 요담은 아비멜렉과 세겜 사람들이 모두 파멸을 맞을 것이라고 말합니다. 내 욕심을 채우기보다 진실하고 의로운 일을 선택해야 합니다.
