1Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them. 2 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and the prophets of God were with them, supporting them. 3 At the same time Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River and Shethar-bozenai and their associates came to them and spoke to them thus: “Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this structure?” 4 They also asked them this: “What are the names of the men who are building this building?” 5 But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not stop them until the report should reach Darius and then an answer be returned by letter concerning it. 6 This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River and Shethar-bozenai and his associates, the governors who were in the province Beyond the River, sent to Darius the king. 7 They sent him a report, in which was written as follows: “To Darius the king, all peace. 8 Be it known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. It is being built with huge stones, and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on diligently and prospers in their hands. 9 Then we asked those elders and spoke to them thus: ‘Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this structure?’ 10 We also asked them their names, for your information, that we might write down the names of their leaders. 11 And this was their reply to us: ‘We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the house that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished. 12 But because our fathers had angered the God of heaven, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried away the people to Babylonia. 13 However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree that this house of God should be rebuilt. 14 And the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought into the temple of Babylon, these Cyrus the king took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 15 and he said to him, “Take these vessels, go and put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its site.” 16 Then this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been in building, and it is not yet finished.’ 17 Therefore, if it seems good to the king, let search be made in the royal archives there in Babylon, to see whether a decree was issued by Cyrus the king for the rebuilding of this house of God in Jerusalem. And let the king send us his pleasure in this matter.”
1그 때에 학개 예언자와 잇도의 아들 스가랴 예언자가, 자기들이 받들어 섬기는 이스라엘의 하나님의 이름으로, 유다와 예루살렘에 사는 유다 사람들에게 예언을 하기 시작하였다. 2 같은 때에, 스알디엘의 아들 스룹바벨과 요사닥의 아들 예수아가, 예루살렘에 있는 하나님의 성전 건축 공사에 착수하였다. 하나님의 두 예언자도 그들을 도왔다. 3 바로 그 때에 유프라테스 강 서쪽 지방의 닷드내 총독이 스달보스내와 동료 관리들을 데리고 그들에게 와서, 누가 그 성전을 다시 지으라고 하였는지, 누가 성벽 공사를 마치라고 하였는지를 물었다. 4 그들은 또한 성전 재건을 돕는 사람들의 이름도 밝히라고 요구하였다. 5 그러나 하나님이 유다의 원로들을 돌보아 주셨으므로, 아무도 그 일을 막을 수 없었다. 페르시아 관리들은 이 일을 다리우스 왕에게 알리고, 회답을 기다리는 수밖에 없었다. 6 유프라테스 강 서쪽 지방의 닷드내 총독은, 스달보스내와 동료 관리들인 유프라테스 강 서쪽 지방의 관리들과 함께, 다리우스 왕에게 글을 올렸다. 7 그 글의 내용은 다음과 같다. “다리우스 임금님께서 평안하시기를 빌며, 8 임금님께 아룁니다. 저희가 유다 지역에 갔을 때에, 그 곳 백성이 크신 하나님을 모시려고 성전을 짓고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그들은 큰 돌을 떠다가 성전을 지으며, 나무를 날라다가 벽을 쌓고 있었습니다. 감독관들의 관리 아래, 공사는 빈틈없이 잘 진행되어 가고 있었습니다. 9 그래서 저희는 원로들에게, 누가 그 성전을 다시 지으라고 하였는지, 누가 성벽 공사를 마치라고 하였는지를 물었습니다. 10 또한 임금님께 공사 책임자들의 명단을 만들어서 알려 드리려고, 그들의 이름도 물었습니다. 11 그들이 우리에게 한 대답은 다음과 같습니다. ‘우리는 하늘과 땅의 주이신 하나님을 섬기는 사람입니다. 우리는 지금, 허물어진 성전을 다시 짓고 있습니다. 이 성전은 본래 옛날 이스라엘의 어떤 큰 왕이 짓기 시작하여 완공하였던 것입니다. 12 그런데 우리의 조상이 하늘의 하나님을 노엽게 하였으므로, 하나님이 우리의 조상을 갈대아 사람 바빌로니아 왕 느부갓네살의 손에 넘기셨습니다. 그가 이 전을 허물고, 백성을 바빌로니아로 사로잡아 갔습니다. 13 그러나 고레스 왕께서 바빌로니아 왕이 된 그 첫 해에, 하나님의 성전을 지으라고 칙령을 내렸습니다. 14 그뿐만 아니라, 그는 느부갓네살이 예루살렘 성전에서 꺼내어서 바빌론 신전으로 가지고 간 성전의 금그릇과 은그릇을 그 신전에서 꺼내어 돌려주기까지 하였습니다. 그 때에 고레스 왕께서는 세스바살을 총독으로 임명하고, 그 그릇들을 주면서, 15 그에게 그것들을 모두 예루살렘으로 가지고 가서 성전에 두라고 하셨습니다. 또 하나님의 성전을 제자리에 다시 세우라고 말씀하셨습니다. 16 바로 그 세스바살이 예루살렘으로 와서, 하나님의 성전 기초를 놓았습니다. 그 때부터 오늘까지 줄곧 일을 하였으나, 아직 다 마치지 못하였습니다.’ 17 아뢰옵기 황송하오나, 임금님께서 바빌론의 왕실 문서 창고를 살펴보시고, 정말 고레스 왕께서 예루살렘에다가 하나님의 성전을 다시 지으라고 칙령을 내리신 적이 있는지 알아 보시는 것이 좋겠습니다. 그런 다음에, 이 일을 어떻게 하면 좋을지를 결정하시고 일러주시기 바랍니다.”
