Summing up


[ 1 Corinthians 4:6 - 4:21 ] (Hymn451)

6I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another.
7 For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
8 Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings! And would that you did reign, so that we might share the rule with you!
9 For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men.
10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute.
11 To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless,
12 and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure;
13 when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.
14 I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children.
15 For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
16 I urge you, then, be imitators of me.
17 That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.
18 Some are arrogant, as though I were not coming to you.
19 But I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people but their power.
20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power.
21 What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

6형제자매 여러분, 나는 여러분을 위하여 이 모든 일을 나와 아볼로에게 적용하여 설명하였습니다. 그것은 “기록된 말씀의 범위를 벗어나지 말라”는 격언의 뜻을 여러분이 우리에게서 배워서, 어느 한 편을 편들어 다른 편을 얕보면서 뽐내지 않도록 하려는 것입니다.
7 누가 그대를 별다르게 보아줍니까? 그대가 가지고 있는 것 가운데서 받아서 가지지 않은 것이 무엇이 있습니까? 모두가 받은 것이라면, 왜 받지 않은 것처럼 자랑합니까?
8 여러분은 벌써 배가 불렀습니다. 벌써 부자가 되었습니다. 우리를 제쳐놓고 왕이나 된 듯이 행세하였습니다. 여러분이 진정 왕처럼 되었으면, 좋겠습니다. 그렇게 하여 우리도 여러분과 함께 왕노릇 하게 되면, 좋겠습니다.
9 내가 생각하기에, 하나님께서는 사도들인 우리를 마치 사형수처럼 세상에서 가장 보잘것없는 사람들로 내놓으셨습니다. 우리는 세계와 천사들과 사람들에게 구경거리가 된 것입니다.
10 우리는 그리스도 때문에 어리석은 사람이 되었지만, 여러분은 그리스도 안에서 지혜 있는 사람이 되었습니다. 우리는 약하나, 여러분은 강합니다. 여러분은 영광을 누리고 있으나, 우리는 천대를 받고 있습니다.
11 우리는 바로 이 시각까지도 주리고, 목마르고, 헐벗고, 얻어맞고, 정처 없이 떠돌아다닙니다.
12 우리는 우리 손으로 일을 하면서, 고된 노동을 합니다. 우리는 욕을 먹으면 도리어 축복하여 주고, 박해를 받으면 참고,
13 비방을 받으면 좋은 말로 응답합니다. 우리는 이 세상의 쓰레기처럼 되고, 이제까지 만물의 찌꺼기처럼 되었습니다.
14 내가 이런 말을 쓰는 것은 여러분을 부끄럽게 하려는 것이 아니라, 나의 사랑하는 자녀들같이 훈계하려는 것입니다.
15 그리스도 안에서 여러분에게는 일만 명의 스승이 있을지 몰라도, 아버지는 여럿이 있을 수 없습니다. 그리스도 예수 안에서 복음으로 내가 여러분을 낳았습니다.
16 그러므로 나는 여러분에게 권합니다. 여러분은 나를 본받는 사람이 되십시오.
17 이 일 때문에 나는 디모데를 여러분에게 보냈습니다. 그는 주님 안에서 얻은 나의 사랑하는 신실한 아들입니다. 그는 그리스도 예수 안에서 행하는 나의 생활 방식을 여러분에게 되새겨 줄 것입니다. 어디에서나, 모든 교회에서 내가 가르치는 그대로 말입니다.
18 그런데 여러분 가운데는, 내가 여러분에게로 가지 못하리라고 생각하여 교만해진 사람이 더러 있습니다.
19 주님께서 허락하시면, 내가 속히 여러분에게로 가서, 그 교만해진 사람들의 말이 아니라 능력을 알아보겠습니다.
20 하나님 나라는 말에 있지 아니하고, 능력에 있습니다.
21 여러분은 무엇을 원합니까? 내가 채찍을 들고 여러분에게로 가는 것이 좋겠습니까? 그렇지 않으면, 사랑과 온유한 마음을 가지고 가는 것이 좋겠습니까?

Who is God like?

Paul said that quarrelling in the names of the apostles strayed from the teachings of the Bible, and there was no reason to boast as everything was the result of God’s grace (vv. 6-7). He contrasted the apostles, who lived like weak fools, with the believers in Corinth, who were arrogant, as if they had already become kings, calling into question whether they had suffered before enjoying glory (vv. 8-13). He did not say this to make them ashamed but to admonish them as beloved children. Paul sent Timothy so that his children through the gospel could learn from Timothy’s example and warned that he himself would visit in person to evaluate the power of those who talked arrogantly (vv. 14-21).
바울은 사역자의 이름을 내세워 분쟁하는 것이 성경의 가르침에서 벗어난 일이라고 말하며, 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜이기에 자랑할 것이 없다고 지적합니다(6-7절). 그는 그리스도 때문에 어리석고 약한 자처럼 살아가는 사역자들과 이미 왕이 된 듯 교만한 고린도 성도들의 모습을 대조하며, 영광 이전에 고난이 있는지를 묻습니다(8-13절). 이 말은 그들을 부끄럽게 하려는 것이 아니라 사랑하는 자녀처럼 훈계하기 위함입니다. 바울은 복음으로 낳은 그들이 자신을 본받도록 디모데를 보내고, 직접 가서 교만한 말이 아닌 실제 능력을 확인하겠다고 경고합니다(14-21절). 믿음의 여정에서 가장 경계해야 할 것이 교만입니다. 고린도 교회 교인들은 왕이나 된 것처럼 자기 멋대로 결정하고, 대접받으려 하고, 다른 사람과 경쟁했습니다. 바울은 그리스도 때문에 비천한 처지에 처하면서도 사람들을 축복하는 자기 삶을 들려주며 그들의 교만을 꾸짖었습니다. 나는 고린도 교회 교인들과 바울 중 누구와 닮았습니까?

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 8-13 We must be wary of becoming arrogant on our journey of faith. The believers in Corinth acted like kings, deciding things according to their own accord, desiring to be served, and competing with others. Paul admonished their arrogance by pointing out how he blessed others despite being in a lowly state for Christ. Am I more like the Corinthian believers or Paul?
믿음의 여정에서 가장 경계해야 할 것이 교만입니다. 고린도 교회 교인들은 왕이나 된 것처럼 자기 멋대로 결정하고, 대접받으려 하고, 다른 사람과 경쟁했습니다. 바울은 그리스도 때문에 비천한 처지에 처하면서도 사람들을 축복하는 자기 삶을 들려주며 그들의 교만을 꾸짖었습니다. 나는 고린도 교인들과 바울 중 누구와 닮았습니까?

VV. 16-17 Church leaders should teach by example rather than words. This is why Paul urged the believers to be his imitators and why he sent Timothy to remind them of his ways. Talk is not enough. Churches should nurture and discipline believers through faith that extends into action.
교회의 지도자는 말이 아닌 삶으로 가르쳐야 합니다. 그래서 바울은 “나를 본받는 사람이 되십시오”라고 했고, 또 자신의 삶을 생각나게 하는 디모데를 보냈습니다. 말을 들려주는 것만으론 부족합니다. 삶까지 보여 주는 것이 교회의 양육이고 교육입니다.
