22Abimelech ruled over Israel three years. 23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, 24 that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. 25 And the leaders of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountaintops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way. And it was told to Abimelech. 26 And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his relatives, and the leaders of Shechem put confidence in him. 27 And they went out into the field and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech. 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him? 29 Would that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech. I would say to Abimelech, ‘Increase your army, and come out.’” 30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up the city against you. 32 Now therefore, go by night, you and the people who are with you, and set an ambush in the field. 33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city. And when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may do to them as your hand finds to do.” 34 So Abimelech and all the men who were with him rose up by night and set an ambush against Shechem in four companies. 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city, and Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from the ambush. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountaintops!” And Zebul said to him, “You mistake the shadow of the mountains for men.” 37 Gaal spoke again and said, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners’ Oak.” 38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your mouth now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them.” 39 And Gaal went out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him. And many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate. 41 And Abimelech lived at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives, so that they could not dwell at Shechem. 42 On the following day, the people went out into the field, and Abimelech was told. 43 He took his people and divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. And he looked and saw the people coming out of the city. So he rose against them and killed them. 44 Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the field and killed them. 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He captured the city and killed the people who were in it, and he razed the city and sowed it with salt.
22아비멜렉이 이스라엘을 세 해 동안 다스렸다. 23 그 때에 하나님이 악령을 보내셔서, 아비멜렉과 세겜 성읍 사람들 사이에 미움이 생기게 하시니, 세겜 성읍 사람들이 아비멜렉을 배반하였다. 24 하나님은 아비멜렉이 여룹바알의 아들 일흔 명에게 저지른 포악한 죄과를 이렇게 갚으셨는데, 자기의 형제들을 죽인 피값을, 아비멜렉에게, 그리고 형제들을 죽이도록 아비멜렉을 도운 세겜 성읍 사람들에게 갚으신 것이다. 25 세겜 성읍 사람들이 아비멜렉을 괴롭히려고 산꼭대기마다 사람을 매복시키고, 그 곳을 지나가는 모든 사람을 강탈하게 하자, 이 소식이 아비멜렉에게 들렸다. 26 에벳의 아들 가알이 자기 친족과 더불어 세겜으로 이사왔는데, 세겜 성읍 사람들에게 신망을 얻었다. 27 마침 추수 때가 되어, 세겜 성읍 사람들은 들로 나가 그들의 포도원에서 포도를 따다가, 포도주를 만들고 잔치를 베풀었다. 그들은 신전에 들어가 먹고 마시면서, 아비멜렉을 저주하였다. 28 에벳의 아들 가알이 말하였다. “우리 세겜 성읍 사람들이 어떤 사람들입니까? 왜 우리가 아비멜렉을 섬겨야 합니까? 도대체 아비멜렉이 누굽니까? 여룹바알의 아들입니다! 스불은 그가 임명한 자입니다. 그런데 왜 우리가 그를 섬겨야 합니까? 여룹바알과 그의 심복 스불은 세겜의 아버지 하몰을 섬기던 사람들입니다. 왜 우리가 아비멜렉을 섬겨야 합니까? 29 나에게 이 백성을 통솔할 권한을 준다면, 아비멜렉을 몰아내겠습니다. 그리고 아비멜렉에게 군대를 동원하여 나오라고 해서 싸움을 걸겠습니다.” 30 그 때에 그 성읍의 통치자인 스불이 에벳의 아들 가알의 말을 전하여 듣고, 화가 치밀어, 31 몰래 전령을 시켜, 아루마에 있는 아비멜렉에게 알렸다. “보십시오, 에벳의 아들 가알과 그의 친족이 세겜으로 이사오더니, 임금님을 대적하려고 온 성읍 사람들을 충동질하고 있습니다. 32 그러니 이제 임금님께서는 밤중에 부하들과 함께 들에 매복하셨다가, 33 아침 일찍 동틀녘에 일어나서 성읍을 기습하시는 것이 좋을 듯합니다. 가알이 그의 무리를 이끌고 나올 때를 기다렸다가, 그들을 습격하십시오.” 34 아비멜렉과 그와 함께 한 모든 군대가 밤에 일어나, 세겜 옆에 네 무리로 나누어 매복하였다. 35 에벳의 아들 가알이 나와서 성문 어귀에 서니, 아비멜렉과 그의 군대가 매복한 곳에서 나왔다. 36 가알이 그 군대를 보고 스불에게 말하였다. “보시오! 사람들이 산꼭대기에서 아래로 내려오고 있소!” 그러자 스불이 그에게 대꾸하였다. “산 그림자가 사람들처럼 보이는 것이겠지요.” 37 다시 가알이 말하였다. “보시오! 사람들이 높은 지대에서 내려오고, 또 한 떼는 므오느님 상수리나무쪽에서 내려오고 있소!” 38 그제야 스불이 그에게 말하였다. “‘아비멜렉이 누구이기에 우리가 그를 섬기겠는가?’ 하고 큰소리치던 그 용기는 지금 어디로 갔소? 저들이 바로 당신이 업신여기던 사람들 아니오? 어서 나가서 싸워 보시오!” 39 가알은 세겜 성읍 사람들을 거느리고 앞장서 나가 아비멜렉과 싸웠다. 40 그러나 그는 아비멜렉에게 쫓기어 그 앞에서 도망하였고, 많은 사상자가 성문 앞까지 널렸다. 41 아비멜렉은 아루마로 돌아가고, 스불은 가알과 그의 친족을 쫓아내어 세겜에서 살지 못하게 하였다. 42 그 다음날 아비멜렉은 세겜 사람들이 들로 나갔다는 소식을 들었다. 43 그는 자기 군대를 이끌고 나가서, 세 떼로 나누어 들에 매복하고 있다가, 그들이 성읍을 나서는 것을 보고 일제히 일어나 그들에게 달려들어 그들을 쳐죽였다. 44 아비멜렉과 그가 이끄는 한 떼는 앞으로 쳐들어가 성문 어귀를 지키고, 다른 두 떼는 들에 있는 모든 사람을 공격하여 그들을 쳐죽였다. 45 아비멜렉은 그 날 종일 그 성읍 사람들과 싸워서 그 성읍을 점령하였다. 그는 그 성읍 안에 있는 백성을 죽이고 나서, 성읍을 헐고, 거기에 소금을 뿌렸다.
