1Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 And when Jacob saw them he said, “This is God's camp!” So he called the name of that place Mahanaim. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom, 4 instructing them, “Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, ‘I have sojourned with Laban and stayed until now. 5 I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.’” 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and there are four hundred men with him.” 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two camps, 8 thinking, “If Esau comes to the one camp and attacks it, then the camp that is left will escape.” 9 And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,’ 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. 11 Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children. 12 But you said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’” 13 So he stayed there that night, and from what he had with him he took a present for his brother Esau, 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milking camels and their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. 16 These he handed over to his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass on ahead of me and put a space between drove and drove.” 17 He instructed the first, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, ‘To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these ahead of you?’ 18 then you shall say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a present sent to my lord Esau. And moreover, he is behind us.’” 19 He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, “You shall say the same thing to Esau when you find him, 20 and you shall say, ‘Moreover, your servant Jacob is behind us.’” For he thought, “I may appease him with the present that goes ahead of me, and afterward I shall see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.” 21 So the present passed on ahead of him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.
1야곱이 길을 떠나서 가는데, 하나님의 천사들이 야곱 앞에 나타났다. 2 야곱이 그들을 알아보고 “이 곳은 하나님의 진이구나!” 하면서, 그 곳 이름을 마하나임이라고 하였다. 3 야곱이 에돔 벌 세일 땅에 사는 형 에서에게, 자기보다 먼저 심부름꾼들을 보내면서 4 지시하였다. “너희는 나의 형님 에서에게 가서, 이렇게 전하여라. ‘주인의 종 야곱이 이렇게 아룁니다. 저는 그 동안 라반에게 몸 붙여 살며, 최근까지도 거기에 머물러 있었습니다. 5 저에게는 소와 나귀, 양 떼와 염소 떼, 남종과 여종이 있습니다. 형님께 이렇게 소식을 전하여 드립니다. 형님께서 저를 너그럽게 보아 주십시오.’” 6 심부름꾼들이 에서에게 갔다가, 야곱에게 돌아와서 말하였다. “주인어른의 형님인 에서 어른께 다녀왔습니다. 그분은 지금 부하 사백 명을 거느리고, 주인어른을 치려고 이리로 오고 있습니다.” 7 야곱은 너무나 두렵고 걱정이 되어서, 자기 일행과 양 떼와 소 떼와 낙타 떼를 두 패로 나누었다. 8 에서가 와서 한 패를 치면, 나머지 한 패라도 피하게 해야겠다는 속셈이었다. 9 야곱은 기도를 드렸다. “할아버지 아브라함을 보살펴 주신 하나님, 아버지 이삭을 보살펴 주신 하나님, 고향 친족에게로 돌아가면 은혜를 베푸시겠다고 저에게 약속하신 주님, 10 주님께서 주님의 종에게 베푸신 이 모든 은총과 온갖 진실을, 이 종은 감히 받을 자격이 없습니다. 제가 이 요단 강을 건널 때에, 가진 것이라고는 지팡이 하나뿐이었습니다만, 이제 저는 이처럼 두 무리나 이루었습니다. 11 부디, 제 형의 손에서, 에서의 손에서, 저를 건져 주십시오. 형이 와서 저를 치고, 아내들과 자식들까지 죽일까 두렵습니다. 12 주님께서 말씀하시기를 ‘내가 반드시 너에게 은혜를 베풀어서, 너의 씨가 바다의 모래처럼 셀 수도 없이 많아지게 하겠다’ 하시지 않으셨습니까?” 13 그 날 밤에 야곱은 거기에서 묵었다. 야곱은 자기가 가진 것 가운데서, 자기의 형 에서에게 줄 선물을 따로 골라냈다. 14 암염소 이백 마리와 숫염소 스무 마리, 암양 이백 마리와 숫양 스무 마리, 15 젖을 빨리는 낙타 서른 마리와 거기에 딸린 새끼들, 암소 마흔 마리와 황소 열 마리, 암나귀 스무 마리와 새끼 나귀 열 마리였다. 16 야곱은 이것들을 몇 떼로 나누고, 자기의 종들에게 맡겨서, 자기보다 앞서서 가게 하고, 떼와 떼 사이에 거리를 두게 하라고 일렀다. 17 야곱은 맨 앞에 선 종에게 지시하였다. “나의 형 에서가 너를 만나서, 네가 뉘 집 사람이며, 어디로 가는 길이며, 네가 끌고 가는 이 짐승들이 다 누구의 것이냐고 묻거든, 18 너는 그에게 ‘이것은 모두 주인의 종 야곱의 것인데, 야곱이 그 형님 에서께 드리는 선물입니다. 야곱은 우리 뒤에 옵니다’ 하고 말하여라.” 19 야곱은, 둘째 떼를 몰고 떠나는 종과, 셋째 떼를 몰고 떠나는 종과, 나머지 떼를 몰고 떠나는 종들에게도, 똑같은 말로 지시하였다. “너희는 에서 형님을 만나거든, 그에게 똑같이 말하여야 한다. 20 그리고 ‘주인의 종 야곱은 우리 뒤에 옵니다’ 하고 말하는 것을 잊지 않도록 하여라.” 야곱이 이렇게 지시한 데는, 자기가 미리 여러 차례 보낸 선물들이 그 형 에서의 분노를 서서히 풀어 주고, 마침내 서로 만날 때에는, 형이 자기를 반가이 맞아 주리라고 생각하였기 때문이다 21 그래서 야곱은 선물을 실은 떼를 앞세워서 보내고, 자기는 그 날 밤에 장막에서 묵었다.
