Abimelech’s Ambition 아비멜렉의 야심

Summing up


[ Judges 9:1 - 9:6 ] (Hymn586)

1Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s relatives and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother’s family,
2 “Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”
3 And his mother’s relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.”
4 And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him.
5 And he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.
6 And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem.

1여룹바알의 아들 아비멜렉이 세겜에 있는 외가의 친척을 찾아가서 그들과 외조부의 온 가족에게 말하였다.
2 “세겜 성읍의 모든 사람들에게 물어 보아 주십시오. 여룹바알의 아들 일흔 명이 모두 다스리는 것 하고 한 사람이 다스리는 것 하고 어느 것이 더 좋은지 물어 보아 주십시오. 그리고 내가 여러분들과 한 혈육이라는 것을 상기시켜 주십시오.”
3 그의 외가 친척이 그의 부탁대로 세겜 성읍의 모든 사람에게 그가 한 말을 모두 전하니, 그들의 마음이 아비멜렉에게 기울어져서 모두 “그는 우리의 혈육이다” 하고 말하게 되었다.
4 그들이 바알브릿 신전에서 은 일흔 냥을 꺼내어 아비멜렉에게 주니, 아비멜렉이 그것으로 건달과 불량배를 고용하여 자기를 따르게 하였다.
5 그리고 그는 오브라에 있는 아버지의 집으로 가서, 자기 형제들 곧 여룹바알의 아들 일흔 명을 한 바위 위에서 죽였다. 그러나 여룹바알의 막내 아들 요담만은 숨어 있었으므로, 살아 남았다.
6 세겜 성읍의 모든 사람들과 밀로의 온 집안이 세겜에 있는 돌기둥 곁의 상수리나무 아래로 가서 아비멜렉을 왕으로 삼았다.

Thinking & Understanding
Driven by his ambition to become king, Abimelech went to Shechem, his mother’s hometown, and won the support of its people. The people of Shechem regarded him as a person of shared lineage and supported him with silver from the house of Baal-berith. Abimelech increased his power by using this silver to hire worthless and reckless fellows. He killed his 70 brothers on a stone to get rid of any obstacles to the throne. Abimelech, using money from the house of Baal to kill his brothers to rise to the throne, shows the cruel and tragic outcome of greed.
아비멜렉은 왕이 되려는 야심을 품고 어머니의 고향 세겜으로 가서 사람들의 지지를 얻습니다. 세겜 사람들은 그를 자신들의 혈육으로 여기고, 바알브릿 신전의 은으로 지원합니다. 아비멜렉은 그 돈으로 불량배들을 고용해 자기 세력을 만듭니다. 그는 왕이 되는 데 걸림돌이 될 형제 70명을 한 바위 위에서 죽입니다. 바알 신전의 돈으로 형제들을 죽이고 왕이 된 아비멜렉의 모습은, 욕망이 얼마나 잔인하고 비참한 결과를 낳는지 보여 줍니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
V. 3 Selfishness can make us vulnerable to being used by wicked people. The people of Shechem supported Abimelech because they regarded him as a person of shared lineage. They expected to enjoy special privileges once he became king. They ended up as accomplices to the killing of innocent people. Evil feeds off selfishness. Evil cannot penetrate the hearts that desire to share blessings with others.
이기심에 사로잡히면 악인에게 이용당하게 됩니다. 세겜 사람들은 아비멜렉이 자기들과 혈육이라는 이유로 그에게 동조했습니다. 그가 왕이 되면 자신들만 특별한 대우와 특권을 누릴 것이라 기대했기 때문입니다. 결국 그들은 죄 없는 사람들을 죽이는 일에 공범이 되었습니다. 악은 이기심에 기생합니다. 모두 함께 복을 나누려는 마음에는 악이 발붙일 수 없습니다.

V. 4 When our hearts are seized by greed, we turn our backs on God. Abimelech used the money dedicated to an idol to finance his political ambitions and satisfy his thirst for power. He was willing to use even idols to become king. Greed leads to idol worship (Col. 3:5). Let’s reflect on ourselves to see if we may be taking a path to success that is not pleasing to God.
욕심에 사로잡히면 하나님도 외면하게 됩니다. 아비멜렉은 권력욕을 채우기 위해 우상에게 바쳐진 돈을 정치 자금으로 사용했습니다. 자신을 왕으로 만들어 줄 수만 있다면 우상이라도 상관없다는 태도였습니다. 탐심은 결국 우상숭배로 이어집니다(골 3:5). 성공을 위해 하나님이 기뻐하지 않으시는 길을 가고 있지는 않은지 돌아봅시다.

Lord, help me not to join forces with evil due to greed and selfishness.
