1And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the LORD had commanded Israel. 2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. 3 And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. 4 And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. 6 And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. 8 They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. 9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” 11 So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them. 13 On the second day the heads of fathers' houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came together to Ezra the scribe in order to study the words of the Law. 14 And they found it written in the Law that the LORD had commanded by Moses that the people of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, 15 and that they should proclaim it and publish it in all their towns and in Jerusalem, “Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.” 16 So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at the Water Gate and in the square at the Gate of Ephraim. 17 And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in the booths, for from the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the people of Israel had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing. 18 And day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. They kept the feast seven days, and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the rule.
1모든 백성이 한꺼번에 수문 앞 광장에 모였다. 그들은 학자 에스라에게, 주님께서 이스라엘에게 명하신 모세의 율법책을 가지고 오라고 청하였다. 2 일곱째 달 초하루에 에스라 제사장은 율법책을 가지고 회중 앞에 나왔다. 거기에는, 남자든 여자든, 알아들을 만한 사람은 모두 나와 있었다. 3 그는 수문 앞 광장에서, 남자든 여자든, 알아들을 만한 모든 사람에게 새벽부터 정오까지, 큰소리로 율법책을 읽어 주었다. 백성은 모두 율법책 읽는 소리에 귀를 기울였다. 4 학자 에스라는 임시로 만든 높은 나무 단 위에 섰다. 그 오른쪽으로는 맛디댜와 스마와 아나야와 우리야와 힐기야와 마아세야가 서고, 왼쪽으로는 브다야와 미사엘과 말기야와 하숨과 하스밧다나와 스가랴와 므술람이 섰다. 5 학자 에스라는 높은 단 위에 서 있었으므로, 백성들은 모두, 그가 책 펴는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 에스라가 책을 펴면, 백성들은 모두 일어섰다. 6 에스라가 위대하신 주 하나님을 찬양하면, 백성들은 모두 손을 들고 “아멘! 아멘!” 하고 응답하고, 엎드려 얼굴을 땅에 대고 주님께 경배하였다. 7 레위 사람인 예수아와 바니와 세레뱌와 야민과 악굽과 사브대와 호디야와 마아세야와 그리다와 아사랴와 요사밧과 하난과 블라야는, 백성들이 제자리에 서 있는 동안에, 그들에게 율법을 설명하여 주었다. 8 하나님의 율법책이 낭독될 때에, 그들이 통역을 하고 뜻을 밝혀 설명하여 주었으므로, 백성은 내용을 잘 알아들을 수 있었다. 9 백성은 율법의 말씀을 들으면서, 모두 울었다. 그래서 총독 느헤미야와, 학자 에스라 제사장과, 백성을 가르치는 레위 사람들이, 이 날은 주 하나님의 거룩한 날이니, 슬퍼하지도 말고 울지도 말라고 모든 백성을 타일렀다. 10 느헤미야는 그들에게 말하였다. “돌아들 가십시오. 살진 짐승들을 잡아 푸짐하게 차려서, 먹고 마시도록 하십시오. 아무것도 차리지 못한 사람들에게는, 먹을 몫을 보내 주십시오. 오늘은 우리 주님의 거룩한 날입니다. 주님 앞에서 기뻐하면 힘이 생기는 법이니, 슬퍼하지들 마십시오.” 11 레위 사람들도 모든 백성을 달래면서, 오늘은 거룩한 날이니, 조용히 하고, 슬퍼하지 말라고 타일렀다. 12 모든 백성은 배운 바를 밝히 깨달았으므로, 돌아가서 먹고 마시며, 없는 사람들에게는 먹을 것을 나누어 주면서, 크게 기뻐하였다. 13 이튿날에 모든 백성을 대표하는 각 가문의 어른들이 제사장들과 레위 사람들과 함께 율법의 말씀을 밝히 알고자 하여, 학자 에스라에게로 갔다. 14 그들은, 이스라엘 자손은 일곱째 달 축제에는 초막에서 지내도록 하라는, 주님께서 모세를 시켜서 명하신 말씀이, 율법에 기록되어 있는 것을 발견하였다. 15 또한 그들은 책에, 산으로 가서 올리브 나무와 들올리브 나무와 소귀나무와 종려나무와 참나무의 가지를 꺾어다가 초막을 짓도록 하라는 말이 기록되어 있기 때문에, 그 말을 이스라엘 자손이 사는 모든 마을과 예루살렘에 널리 알려야 한다는 것을 알게 되었다. 16 그래서 백성은 나가서, 나뭇가지를 꺾어다가, 지붕 위와 마당과 하나님의 성전 뜰과 수문 앞 광장과 에브라임 문 앞 광장에 초막을 세웠다. 17 사로잡혀 갔다가 돌아온 모든 사람이 초막을 세우고 거기에 머물렀다. 눈의 아들 여호수아 때로부터 그 날까지, 이렇게 축제를 즐긴 일이 없었으므로, 이스라엘 자손은 크게 즐거워하였다. 18 에스라는 첫날로부터 마지막 날까지, 날마다 하나님의 율법책을 읽어 주었다. 백성은 이레 동안 절기를 지키고, 여드레째 되는 날에는 규례대로 성회를 열었다.
