1Then the men of Ephraim said to him, “What is this that you have done to us, not to call us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they accused him fiercely. 2 And he said to them, “What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer? 3 God has given into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. What have I been able to do in comparison with you?” Then their anger against him subsided when he said this. 4 And Gideon came to the Jordan and crossed over, he and the300 men who were with him, exhausted yet pursuing. 5 So he said to the men of Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me, for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.” 6 And the officials of Succoth said, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?” 7 So Gideon said, “Well then, when the LORD has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will flail your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.” 8 And from there he went up to Penuel, and spoke to them in the same way, and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered. 9 And he said to the men of Penuel, “When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.” 10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about15,000 men, all who were left of all the army of the people of the East, for there had fallen120,000 men who drew the sword. 11 And Gideon went up by the way of the tent dwellers east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the army, for the army felt secure. 12 And Zebah and Zalmunna fled, and he pursued them and captured the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and he threw all the army into a panic. 13 Then Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle by the ascent of Heres. 14 And he captured a young man of Succoth and questioned him. And he wrote down for him the officials and elders of Succoth, seventy-seven men. 15 And he came to the men of Succoth and said, “Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me, saying, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are exhausted?’” 16 And he took the elders of the city, and he took thorns of the wilderness and briers and with them taught the men of Succoth a lesson. 17 And he broke down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city. 18 Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “Where are the men whom you killed at Tabor?” They answered, “As you are, so were they. Every one of them resembled the son of a king.” 19 And he said, “They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the LORD lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not kill you.” 20 So he said to Jether his firstborn, “Rise and kill them!” But the young man did not draw his sword, for he was afraid, because he was still a young man. 21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Rise yourself and fall upon us, for as the man is, so is his strength.” And Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.
1그 때에 에브라임 사람들이 기드온에게 말하였다. “장군께서는 미디안과 싸우러 나가실 때에 우리를 부르지 않으셨는데, 어떻게 우리에게 이렇게 하실 수 있습니까?” 그들이 기드온에게 거세게 항의하니, 2 그가 그들에게 말하였다. “이번에 내가 한 일이 당신들이 한 일에 비교나 되겠습니까? 에브라임이 떨어진 포도를 주운 것이 아비에셀이 추수한 것 전부보다 낫지 않습니까? 3 하나님이 미디안의 우두머리 오렙과 스엡을 당신들의 손에 넘겨 주셨습니다. 그러니 내가 한 일이 어찌 당신들이 한 일에 비교나 되겠습니까?” 기드온이 이 말을 하니, 그들의 노여움이 풀렸다. 4 기드온이 그가 거느리는 군사 삼백 명과 함께 요단 강을 건너, 지친 몸이지만 계속 적들을 추격하였다. 5 기드온은 숙곳에 이르렀을 때에 그 곳 사람들에게 사정하였다. “나를 따르는 군인들이 지쳤으니, 그들에게 빵 덩어리를 좀 주십시오. 나는 미디안의 두 왕 세바와 살문나를 추격하고 있습니다.” 6 이 말을 들은 숙곳의 지도자들은 “우리를 보고 당신의 군대에게 빵을 주라니, 세바와 살문나가 당신의 손아귀에 들기라도 하였다는 말이오?” 하고 비아냥거렸다. 7 그러자 기드온이 대답하였다. “좋소! 주님께서 세바와 살문나를 나의 손에 넘겨 주신 뒤에, 내가 들가시와 찔레로 당신들의 살을 찌르고야 말겠소.” 8 거기에서 기드온이 브누엘로 올라가, 그 곳 사람들에게도 같은 사정을 해보았지만, 브누엘 사람들의 대답도 숙곳 사람들의 대답과 같았다. 9 그래서 그는 브누엘 사람들에게도 “내가 안전하게 성한 몸으로 돌아오는 날, 이 망대를 헐어 버리고 말겠소” 하고 말하였다. 10 그 때에 세바와 살문나는 겨우 만 오천 명의 군대를 데리고, 갈골에 진을 치고 있었다. 이들은 모두 사막 부족의 군대 가운데서 살아 남은 자들인데, 이미 칼 쓰는 군인 십이만 명이 전사하였다. 11 기드온은, 장막에 사는 사람들이 다니는 길을 따라 동쪽으로 노바와 욕브하까지 올라가서, 방심하고 있던 적군을 기습하였다. 12 미디안의 두 왕 세바와 살문나가 또 도망치니, 기드온이 그들을 추격하여 세바와 살문나를 사로잡고, 온 군대를 전멸시켰다. 13 요아스의 아들 기드온이 헤레스 비탈길에서 전쟁을 마치고 오다가, 14 숙곳 사람 젊은이 한 명을 포로로 잡아서 캐물으니, 그 젊은이가 일흔일곱 명이나 되는 숙곳의 지도자들과 장로들의 명단을 적어 주었다. 15 기드온은 숙곳에 이르러 그 곳 사람들에게 말하였다. “여기 세바와 살문나가 있다. 너희는 나에게 ‘우리를 보고 당신의 지친 군대에게 빵을 주라니, 세바와 살문나가 당신의 손아귀에 들기라도 하였다는 말이오?’ 하면서 나를 조롱하였다.” 16 기드온은 그 성읍의 장로들을 체포한 다음에, 들가시와 찔레를 가져다가, 숙곳 사람들을 응징하였다. 17 그리고 그는 브누엘의 망대도 헐고, 그 성읍 사람들을 죽였다. 18 그런 다음에 그는 세바와 살문나에게 물었다. “너희가 다볼에서 죽인 사람들은 어떻게 생겼더냐?” 그들이 대답하였다. “그들은 당신처럼 하나 하나가 왕자와 같았습니다.” 19 기드온이 말하였다. “그들은 나의 어머니에게서 난 형제들이다. 주님의 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하지만, 너희가 그들을 살려 주기만 하였더라도 내가 너희를 죽이지는 않을 것이다.” 20 기드온은 맏아들 예델에게, 어서 그들을 죽이라고 명하였다. 그러나 그는 아직 어리고 두려워서 칼을 뽑지 못하였다. 21 그러자 세바와 살문나가 기드온에게 말하였다. “사내 대장부답게 네가 직접 우리를 쳐라.” 기드온이 일어나 세바와 살문나를 쳐서 죽이고, 그들이 타던 낙타의 목에서 초승달 모양의 장식을 떼어 가졌다.
