[ Judges 8:22 - 8:35 ] (Hymn366)

22Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, you and your son and your grandson also, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”
23 Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the LORD will rule over you.”
24 And Gideon said to them, “Let me make a request of you: every one of you give me the earrings from his spoil.” (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
25 And they answered, “We will willingly give them.” And they spread a cloak, and every man threw in it the earrings of his spoil.
26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was1,700 shekels of gold, besides the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the collars that were around the necks of their camels.
27 And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah. And all Israel whored after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family.
28 So Midian was subdued before the people of Israel, and they raised their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.
29 Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house.
30 Now Gideon had seventy sons, his own offspring, for he had many wives.
31 And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he called his name Abimelech.
32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, at Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel turned again and whored after the Baals and made Baal-berith their god.
34 And the people of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hand of all their enemies on every side,
35 and they did not show steadfast love to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in return for all the good that he had done to Israel.

22그 뒤에 이스라엘 사람들이 기드온에게 말하였다. “장군께서 우리를 미디안의 손에서 구하여 주셨으니, 장군께서 우리를 다스리시고, 대를 이어 아들과 손자가 우리를 다스리게 하여 주십시오.”
23 그러나 기드온은 그들에게 말하였다. “나는 여러분을 다스리지 않을 것입니다. 나의 아들도 여러분을 다스리지 않을 것입니다. 오직 주님께서 여러분을 다스리실 것입니다.”
24 기드온은 말을 계속하였다. “여러분에게 한 가지 청이 있습니다. 각 사람이 얻은 전리품 가운데서 귀고리 하나씩을 나에게 주십시오.” 미디안 군은 이스마엘 사람들이므로, 모두 금 귀고리를 달고 있었다.
25 그들은 “기꺼이 드리겠습니다” 하고 말하면서, 겉옷을 펴고, 저마다 전리품 가운데서 귀고리 하나씩을 거기에 던졌다.
26 그의 요청으로 들어온 금 귀고리의 무게가 금 천칠백 세겔이나 되었다. 그 밖에도 초승달 모양의 장식품과 패물들, 미디안 왕들이 입었던 자주색 옷과 낙타 목에 둘렀던 사슬이 있었다.
27 기드온은 이것들을 가지고 에봇 하나를 만들어, 자기가 사는 오브라 성읍에 두었다. 그러자 온 이스라엘이 그 곳에서 그것을 음란하게 섬겨서, 그것이 기드온과 그 집안에 올가미가 되었다.
28 이와 같이 하여 미디안은 이스라엘 사람에게 복종하게 되었고, 다시는 고개를 들지 못하였다. 기드온이 사는 사십 년 동안, 그 땅은 전쟁이 없이 평온하였다.
29 요아스의 아들 여룹바알은 자기 집으로 돌아가서 살았다.
30 그런데 기드온은 아내가 많아, 친아들이 일흔 명이나 되었다.
31 또 세겜에 있는 첩과의 사이에서 아들이 하나 태어났는데, 그 아들에게는 아비멜렉이라는 이름을 지어 주었다.
32 요아스의 아들 기드온은 나이가 많을 때까지 잘 살다가, 죽어서 아비에셀 사람의 땅 오브라에 있는 그의 아버지 요아스의 무덤에 묻혔다.
33 기드온이 죽으니, 이스라엘 자손이 다시 바알들을 음란하게 섬기고, 바알브릿을 자기들의 신으로 삼았다.
34 이스라엘 자손은 주위의 모든 적으로부터 자기들을 건져 내신 주 하나님을 기억하지 않았다.
35 또 여룹바알이라고도 하는 기드온이 이스라엘에게 선을 베풀었지만, 아무도 그 가족에게 은혜를 갚지 않았다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
The Israelites tried to raise up Gideon as a leader. On the surface, Gideon refused their request. But his demand for the golden earrings from the spoil, the number of sons he had, and the fact that he named his son Abimelech revealed his desire to be sovereign. Gideon made an ephod of gold and placed it in Ophrah, and the Israelites later came to worship it like an idol. Gideon enjoyed peace while he was alive, but his greed became a snare that led to problems in his household and the nation of Israel after his death. In the end, the power of Baal, which had been destroyed, was revived, and Israel forgot God.
이스라엘 사람들은 기드온을 통치자로 세우려 하지만, 기드온은 겉으로는 그 제안을 거절합니다. 그러나 전리품으로 금귀고리를 요구하고, 많은 자녀를 두며, 아들의 이름을 아비멜렉이라고 짓는 모습에서 왕권을 향한 그의 욕망이 드러납니다. 또한 기드온은 금으로 에봇을 만들어 오브라에 두었고, 훗날 이스라엘은 그것을 우상처럼 섬기게 됩니다. 기드온은 살아 있는 동안 평안을 누렸지만, 그가 남긴 욕망과 올무는 죽은 뒤 이스라엘과 그의 집안에 큰 문제를 남깁니다. 결국 무너졌던 바알의 영향력이 다시 살아나고, 이스라엘은 하나님을 잊어버립니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 23-27 Gideon rejected the position of king, confessing that God was the true ruler, but he did not refuse the life of a king. His life was governed by vain greed rather than this righteous confession. His greed became a snare that caused his family and Israel to stumble. Let’s examine ourselves to see if our lives align with our confession and identify the snares that may be pulling us away from the Word.
기드온은 주님이 왕이시라고 고백하며 왕의 자리는 거절했지만, 왕처럼 사는 삶은 거절하지 않았습니다. 바른 고백보다 헛된 욕망이 그의 삶을 지배한 것입니다. 결국 그의 욕망은 가족과 이스라엘의 올가미가 됩니다. 나의 고백과 삶은 일치하는지, 나를 말씀에서 멀어지게 하는 올가미는 무엇인지 돌아봅시다.

VV. 22,29-35 The Israelites mistakenly believed that their safety depended on having a king and that bowing to the ephod would bring them blessings. However, if we do not have a proper relationship with the Lord, all our labour is in vain. Let’s reflect on the root of our failures and consider who we are turning to for help.
이스라엘은 왕이 있어야 안전하다고 오해했고, 에봇에 절하는 것이 복받는 길이라 착각했습니다. 그러나 주님과의 관계가 바로 서지 않으면, 모든 수고는 헛될 뿐입니다. 나는 실패의 원인을 어디에서 찾고, 해결의 열쇠를 누구에게서 구하고 있는지 돌아봅시다.
