Keep on Keeping On
[ 1 Timothy 6:11 - 6:21 ]

11. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
12. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
13. In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you
14. to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15. which God will bring about in his own time--God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
16. who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.
17. Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
18. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
19. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
20. Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge,
21. which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith. Grace be with you.

Reflection
Living the True Life (6:11–19)
Having warned Timothy to flee from the love of money, Paul now encourages his young disciple to continue to fight the good fight of the faith (v. 12). There are two elements worth noting in Pauls exhortation. First, we are to hold on to the good confession of faith we made when we first believed. Fickle beings that we are, it is easy to forget our first love and the confession we made when we first gave our lives to Christ. Second, we are also to call on others to align their hearts with the ways that will lead to life that is truly life (v. 19). Give thanks to God for His reminders to us to keep fighting and for the church in which we are called to grow together in true living.

The Precious Parcel (6:20–21)
Pauls final warnings to Timothy are particularly pertinent to believers today. We are to guard the message of the Gospel closely and be wary of being led astray by those who oppose the Gospel with their empty words. As Christians around the world face growing hostility toward their faith, the church is called to defend the truth of the Gospel and savor its preciousness in the midst of persecution and cynicism. Many in the church have sadly given up their faith, having been persuaded by worldly arguments. But those who remain must examine Gods Word closely and grow deeper in intimacy with Him. Many will turn away, but Gods Word and His people will endure forever.

Application
- How do you hold to the good confession you made? Do you seek to live the life that is truly life? Pray for a heart of true confession that seeks God.

- Are you ever tempted to give up your faith? What can you do to grow in intimacy with God that you may persevere?

A Letter to
God
Gracious Father, may I never forget my first love. Let Your Spirit fan the flames of my desire for You, and grant me the sincere heart to point others to You. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
