Focus on Eternity
[ 1 Timothy 4:6 - 4:16 ]

6. If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
7. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
8. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
9. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance
10. (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.
11. Command and teach these things.
12. Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.
13. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.
14. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
15. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.
16. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Reflection
Training for Eternity (4:6–11)
A good minister of Christ is nourished by the truths of the faith and is able to lead others to obey these truths as well. They are not swayed by false teachings, no matter how attractive they sound; they reject superstition and legalism and rely on the truth of Gods Word, which is alive in all believers through His Spirit. Our physical bodies are temporary, but our souls are eternal. Thus we ought to train our souls and grow in godliness through the spiritual disciplines. Though struggle is an inevitable part of this training, we are led by the living God who strengthens and empowers us to finish the race. Encourage yourself and others with this truth.

Investing in Eternity (4:12–16)
Do not accept the limits that culture dictates about people your age. The world expects young people to be foolish, but the Bible states that young people are to set an example for others. We have been saved and set apart for righteousness, and our reputation shouts to the world the truth of our beliefs. Let your words and deeds be characterized by love, faith, and purity. Devote your life to eternal things. The things of this world may be attractive and fun, but they are temporary. Investing your life in the proclamation of the Gospel will produce eternal rewards. Be alert to the distractions that will take you off course, and be diligent to stay on task, using your gifts to expand the eternal kingdom of God.

Application
- In what ways are you striving to grow in godliness and be a good minister of Christ to others?

- What portion of your time, money, and attention goes toward achieving temporal goals? How are you investing in eternity? If you find yourself off course, repent and return.

A Letter to
God
One true God, I will follow You. I will live with eternity on my mind and Your love in my heart. Give me the strength to submit to Your training. Be glorified in my life, both now and in eternity. In Jesus name. Amen.
