[ Romans 7:14 - 7:25 ] - hymn 268 Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:24–25 At his death, the great artist Michelangelo left many unfinished projects. But four of his sculptures were never meant to be completed. The Bearded Slave, the Atlas Slave, the Awakening Slave, and the Young Slave, though they appear unfinished, are just as Michelangelo intended them to be. The artist wanted to show what it might feel like to be forever enslaved. Rather than sculpting figures in chains, Michelangelo made figures stuck in the very marble out of which they are carved. Bodies emerge from the stone, but not completely. Muscles flex, but the figures are never able to free themselves. My empathy with the slave sculptures is immediate. Their plight is not unlike my struggle with sin. I am unable to free myself: like the sculptures I am stuck, ¡°a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me¡±(Rom 7:23). No matter how hard I try, I cannot change myself. But thanks be to God, you and I will not remain unfinished works. We won¡¯t be complete until heaven, but in the meantime as we welcome the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, He changes us. God promises to finish the good work He has begun in us(Phil. 1:6). Amy Peterson		[ 로마서 7:14 - 7:25 ] - 찬송가 268 장 이 사망의 몸에서 누가 나를 건져내랴 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님께 감사하리로다 로마서 7:24-25 위대한 예술가 미켈란젤로는 죽을 때에 많은 미완성작품들을 남겼습니다. 하지만 그의 조각상들 중 네 가지는 완성할 계획이 전혀 없었던 작품들입니다. 그 작품들은 ‘수염을 기른 노예’, ‘아틀라스 노예’, ‘깨어 있는 노예’, 그리고 ‘어린 노예’인데, 그것들은 완성되지 않은 것처럼 보이지만 미켈란젤로가 의도했던 그대로를 보여주는 작품들입니다. 그는 영원히 노예의 굴레에 얽매여 사는 것이 어떤 것인지를 보여주고 싶었던 것입니다. 미켈란젤로는 사슬에 매인 조각상을 만들지 않고 그 조각상을 쪼아 만든 원래의 돌 안에 갇혀 있게 만들었습니다. 몸이 돌에서 나오고는 있지만 완전히 빠져나오지 못하고 있습니다. 그 조각상들은 근육에 힘이 들어가 있지만, 결코 자신을 자유롭게 할 수 없습니다. 그 노예 조각상의 모습이 나와 같다는 것을 바로 느낍니다. 그들이 처한 곤경은 내가 죄 때문에 몸부림치는 것과 다르지 않습니다. 나도 나 자신을 자유롭게 하지 못합니다. “내 지체 속에 있는 죄의 법에 사로잡힌 죄수”(롬 7:23)처럼, 나도 그 조각상들처럼 갇혀 있습니다. 아무리 열심히 노력해도 나는 나를 바꿀 수 없습니다. 하지만 하나님께 감사하게도, 당신과 나는 미완성 작품으로 남아 있지 않을 것입니다. 우리는 천국에 갈 때까지는 온전해지지 않겠지만, 우리가 그때까지 변화시키시는 성령님의 역사를 받아들일 때 그분이 우리를 변화시켜주십니다. 하나님은 우리 안에서 시작하신 착한 일을 이루어주시겠다고 약속하십니다(빌 1:6).

He is the potter; we are the clay.

14. We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

15. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

16. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

17. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

18. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

19. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do -- this I keep on doing.

20. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

21. So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

22. For in my inner being I delight in God's law;

23. but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

24. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

25. Thanks be to God -- through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

• 하나님, 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도의 사역을 통해 우리를 죄의 노예에서 해방시키시고 새로운 피조물로 만들어주시니 감사합니다.

그는 토기장이시고 우리는 진흙이다.

14. 우리가 율법은 신령한 줄 알거니와 나는 육신에 속하여 죄 아래에 팔렸도다

15. 내가 행하는 것을 내가 알지 못하노니 곧 내가 원하는 것은 행하지 아니하고 도리어 미워하는 것을 행함이라

16. 만일 내가 원하지 아니하는 그것을 행하면 내가 이로써 율법이 선한 것을 시인하노니

17. 이제는 그것을 행하는 자가 내가 아니요 내 속에 거하는 죄니라

18. 내 속 곧 내 육신에 선한 것이 거하지 아니하는 줄을 아노니 원함은 내게 있으나 선을 행하는 것은 없노라

19. 내가 원하는 바 선은 행하지 아니하고 도리어 원하지 아니하는 바 악을 행하는도다

20. 만일 내가 원하지 아니하는 그것을 하면 이를 행하는 자는 내가 아니요 내 속에 거하는 죄니라

21. 그러므로 내가 한 법을 깨달았노니 곧 선을 행하기 원하는 나에게 악이 함께 있는 것이로다

22. 내 속사람으로는 하나님의 법을 즐거워하되

23. 내 지체 속에서 한 다른 법이 내 마음의 법과 싸워 내 지체 속에 있는 죄의 법으로 나를 사로잡는 것을 보는도다

24. 오호라 나는 곤고한 사람이로다 이 사망의 몸에서 누가 나를 건져내랴

25. 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님께 감사하리로다 그런즉 내 자신이 마음으로는 하나님의 법을 육신으로는 죄의 법을 섬기노라
