Isaiah 43:4 To celebrate Winston Churchill¡¯s eightieth birthday, the British parliament commissioned artist Graham Sutherland to paint a portrait of the celebrated statesman. ¡°How are you going to paint me?¡± Churchill reportedly asked the artist: ¡°As a cherub, or the Bulldog?¡± Churchill liked these two popular perceptions of him. Sutherland, however, said he would paint what he saw. Churchill was not happy with the results. Sutherland¡¯s portrait had Churchill slumped in a chair wearing his trademark scowl—true to reality, but hardly flattering. After its official unveiling, Churchill hid the painting in his cellar. It was later secretly destroyed. Like Churchill, most of us have an image of ourselves we want others to have of us also—whether of success, godliness, beauty, or strength. We can go to great lengths to conceal our ¡°ugly¡± sides. Perhaps deep down we fear we won¡¯t be loved if the real us is known. When the Israelites were taken captive by Babylon, they were seen at their worst. Because of their sins, God allowed their enemies to conquer them. But He told them not to fear. He knew them by name, and He was with them in every humiliating trial (Isa. 43:1–2). They were secure in His hands (v. 13) and ¡°precious¡± to Him (v. 4). Despite their ugliness, God loved them. We will find ourselves less motivated to seek the approval of others when such a truth truly sinks in. God knows the real us and still loves us immeasurably (Eph. 3:18). Sheridan Voysey		[ 이사야 43:1 - 43:9 ] - 찬송가 310 장 네가 내 눈에 보배롭고 존귀하며 내가 너를 사랑하였은즉 이사야 43:4 윈스턴 처칠의 여든 번째 생일을 축하하기 위해 영국의회는 화가 그래이엄 서덜랜드에게 이 저명한 정치가의 초상화를 그려달라고 의뢰했습니다. 처칠이 화가에게 이렇게 물었다고 전해집니다. “자네는 나를 어떻게 그릴 텐가? 천사로? 아니면 불독으로?” 처칠은 대중에게 친숙한 자신에 대한 이 두 가지 모습을 좋아했습니다. 하지만, 서덜랜드는 자신이 본 것을 그리겠다고 대답했습니다. 처칠은 완성된 초상화를 좋아하지 않았습니다. 서덜랜드는 의자에 푹 쓰러져 자신의 트레이드마크인 찡그린 얼굴을 하고 있는 처칠의 모습을 초상화에 그려놓았던 것입니다. 실제 모습대로 그리긴 했지만, 마음에 드는 그림이라고는 할 수 없었습니다. 처칠은 공식적인 제막식을 가진 후 그 초상화를 자신의 집 다락방에 숨겨놓았다가, 나중에 아무도 모르게 폐기해버렸습니다. 처칠과 마찬가지로 우리 대부분에게도 성공이나 경건함, 아름다움, 혹은 강인함 같은, 남들이 우리를 그렇게 봐주었으면 하는 자신의 이미지가 있습니다. 우리는 우리의 ‘추한’ 면들을 감추기 위해 온갖 노력을 다 하기도 합니다. 아마도 우리 마음속 깊이 우리의 참 모습이 공개되면 사람들로부터 사랑받을 수 없을 것이라는 두려움이 자리 잡고 있는지도 모르겠습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 바벨론에 포로로 끌려갈 때 그들의 최악의 모습을 보여주었습니다. 하나님은 그들의 죄 때문에 적들이 그들을 정복하는 것을 허락하셨습니다. 하지만 하나님은 그들에게 두려워하지 말라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 그들 한 사람 한 사람을 아시고, 모든 참담한 시련 속에서 그들과 함께 하셨습니다(사 43:1-2). 그들은 하나님의 손 안에서 안전했으며(13절), 하나님께 “존귀한” 자들이었습니다(4절). 그들의 추함에도 불구하고 하나님은 그들을 사랑하셨습니다. 그러한 진리가 우리 마음속에 진정 와 닿을 때, 우리는 다른 사람들의 인정을 받으려고 그렇게 애쓰지 않게 될 것입니다. 하나님은 우리의 진짜 모습을 아시면서도 측량할 수 없을 만큼 우리를 사랑하는 분이십니다(엡 3:18).

• Father God, thank You for loving me deeply, forgiving my sins through Christ, and making me Your child. Because of this, I give up my need to appear perfect to others.

God¡¯s deep love means we can be real with others.

1. But now, this is what the LORD says -- he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
2. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
3. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead.
4. Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you, and people in exchange for your life.
5. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west.
6. I will say to the north, `Give them up!' and to the south, `Do not hold them back.' Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth --
7. everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made."
8. Lead out those who have eyes but are blind, who have ears but are deaf.
9. All the nations gather together and the peoples assemble. Which of them foretold this and proclaimed to us the former things? Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right, so that others may hear and say, "It is true."

하나님의 깊은 사랑을 체험하면 다른 사람들 앞에서 진실할 수 있다.

8. 눈이 있어도 보지 못하고 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하는 백성을 이끌어 내라
9. 열방은 모였으며 민족들이 회집하였는데 그들 중에 누가 이 일을 알려 주며 이전 일들을 우리에게 들려 주겠느냐 그들이 그들의 증인을 세워서 자기들의 옳음을 나타내고 듣는 자들이 옳다고 말하게 하여 보라
