[ Genesis 13:1 - 13:18 ] - hymn 370 Is not the whole land before you? Let¡¯s part company. If you go to the left, I¡¯ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I¡¯ll go to the left. Genesis 13:9 In some cultures a younger person is expected to permit his elder to enter a room first. In others, the most important or highest ranking individual enters first. No matter what our traditions, there are times when we find it difficult to allow someone to choose first on important matters, especially when that privilege rightfully belongs to us. Abram (later called Abraham) and his nephew Lot had so many flocks, herds, and tents that the land could not support both of them as they traveled together. To avoid conflict, Abram suggested they part company and generously gave Lot first choice of the land. His nephew took the fertile Jordan Valley, leaving Abram with the less desirable land. Abram did not insist on his rights as the elder in this situation but trusted his future to God. ¡°So Abram said to Lot, ¡®Let¡¯s not have any quarreling between you and me . . . . Is not the whole land before you? Let¡¯s part company. If you go to the left, I¡¯ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I¡¯ll go to the left¡± (Gen. 13:8–9). Lot¡¯s choice eventually led to dire consequences for his entire family (see Gen. 19). Today, as we face choices of many kinds, we can trust our Father to guide us in His way. He has promised to care for us. He will always give us what we need. 1. So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him.
2. Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold.
3. From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier
4. and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD.
5. Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.
6. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.
7. And quarreling arose between Abram's herdsmen and the herdsmen of Lot. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.
8. So Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers.
9. Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right; if you go to the right, I'll go to the left."
10. Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
11. So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:
12. Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.
13. Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.
14. The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west.
15. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.
16. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.
17. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you."
18. So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.

10. 이에 롯이 눈을 들어 요단 지역을 바라본즉 소알까지 온 땅에 물이 넉넉하니 여호와께서 소돔과 고모라를 멸하시기 전이었으므로 여호와의 동산 같고 애굽 땅과 같았더라
11. 그러므로 롯이 요단 온 지역을 택하고 동으로 옮기니 그들이 서로 떠난지라
12. 아브람은 가나안 땅에 거주하였고 롯은 그 지역의 도시들에 머무르며 그 장막을 옮겨 소돔까지 이르렀더라
13. 소돔 사람은 여호와 앞에 악하며 큰 죄인이었더라
14. 롯이 아브람을 떠난 후에 여호와께서 아브람에게 이르시되 너는 눈을 들어 너 있는 곳에서 북쪽과 남쪽 그리고 동쪽과 서쪽을 바라보라
15. 보이는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니 영원히 이르리라
16. 내가 네 자손이 땅의 티끌 같게 하리니 사람이 땅의 티끌을 능히 셀 수 있을진대 네 자손도 세리라
17. 너는 일어나 그 땅을 종과 횡으로 두루 다녀 보라 내가 그것을 네게 주리라
18. 이에 아브람이 장막을 옮겨 헤브론에 있는 마므레 상수리 수풀에 이르러 거주하며 거기서 여호와를 위하여 제단을 쌓았더라
