Ruler of the Waves		파도를 다스리는 분
[ Job 38:1 - 38:18 ] - hymn 68 [The Lord said], ¡°This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt.¡± Job 38:11 King Canute was one of the most powerful men on earth in the eleventh century. In a now-famous tale, it is said that he ordered his chair to be placed on the shore as the tide was rising. ¡°You are subject to me,¡± he said to the sea. ¡°I command you, therefore, not to rise on to my land, nor to wet the clothing or limbs of your master.¡± But the tide continued to rise, drenching the king¡¯s feet. This story is often told to draw attention to Canute¡¯s pride. Actually, it¡¯s a story about humility. ¡°Let all the world know that the power of kings is empty,¡± Canute says next, ¡°save Him by whose will heaven, earth and sea obey.¡± Canute¡¯s story makes a point: God is the only all-powerful One. Job discovered the same. Compared to the One who laid Earth¡¯s foundations (Job 38:4–7), who commands morning to appear and night to end (vv. 12–13), who stocks the storehouses of the snow and directs the stars (vv. 22, 31–33), we are small. There is only one Ruler of the waves, and it is not us (v. 11; Matt. 8:23–27). Canute¡¯s story is good to reenact when we begin feeling too clever or proud about ourselves. Walk to the beach and tell the tide to halt or try commanding the sun to step aside. We¡¯ll soon remember who is really supreme and thank Him for ruling our lives. God is great, we are small, and that is good.

1. Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said:
2. "Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge?
3. Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.
4. "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand.
5. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6. On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone --
7. while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?
8. "Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb,
9. when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10. when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place,
11. when I said, `This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt'?
12. "Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place,
13. that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it?
14. The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment.
15. The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken.
16. "Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17. Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18. Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this.

• 전능하신 주님, 주님은 모든 것 위에 높이 계십니다. 제 인생을 다스리시는 주님께 엎드려 경배합니다.

하나님은 위대하시고 우리는 작은 존재이다. 그 사실이 참 좋다.

1. 그 때에 여호와께서 폭풍우 가운데에서 욥에게 말씀하여 이르시되
2. 무지한 말로 생각을 어둡게 하는 자가 누구냐
3. 너는 대장부처럼 허리를 묶고 내가 네게 묻는 것을 대답할지니라
4. 내가 땅의 기초를 놓을 때에 네가 어디 있었느냐 네가 깨달아 알았거든 말할지니라
5. 누가 그것의 도량법을 정하였는지, 누가 그 줄을 그것의 위에 띄웠는지 네가 아느냐
6. 그것의 주추는 무엇 위에 세웠으며 그 모퉁잇돌을 누가 놓았느냐
7. 그 때에 새벽 별들이 기뻐 노래하며 하나님의 아들들이 다 기뻐 소리를 질렀느니라
8. 바다가 그 모태에서 터져 나올 때에 문으로 그것을 가둔 자가 누구냐
9. 그 때에 내가 구름으로 그 옷을 만들고 흑암으로 그 강보를 만들고
10. 한계를 정하여 문빗장을 지르고
11. 이르기를 네가 여기까지 오고 더 넘어가지 못하리니 네 높은 파도가 여기서 그칠지니라 하였노라
12. 네가 너의 날에 아침에게 명령하였느냐 새벽에게 그 자리를 일러 주었느냐
13. 그것으로 땅 끝을 붙잡고 악한 자들을 그 땅에서 떨쳐 버린 일이 있었느냐
14. 땅이 변하여 진흙에 인친 것 같이 되었고 그들은 옷 같이 나타나되
15. 악인에게는 그 빛이 차단되고 그들의 높이 든 팔이 꺾이느니라
16. 네가 바다의 샘에 들어갔었느냐 깊은 물 밑으로 걸어 다녀 보았느냐
17. 사망의 문이 네게 나타났느냐 사망의 그늘진 문을 네가 보았느냐
18. 땅의 너비를 네가 측량할 수 있느냐 네가 그 모든 것들을 다 알거든 말할지니라
