Out in the Cold		무시당할 때
[ Job 11:7 - 11:20 ] - hymn 220 To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his. - Job 12:13 In desperation, a woman called the housing assistance center where I worked. A heating problem had turned her rental home into a freezer with furniture. Panicked, she asked me how she would care for her children. I hurriedly replied with the scripted official response: ¡°Just move into a hotel and send the landlord the bill.¡± She angrily hung up on me. I knew the textbook answer to her question, but I had completely missed her heart. She wanted someone to understand her fear and desperation. She needed to know she wasn¡¯t alone. In essence, I had left her out in the cold. After Job had lost everything, he had friends with answers but little understanding. Zophar told him all he needed to do was live wholeheartedly for God. Then ¡°life will be brighter than noonday,¡± he said (11:17). That counsel wasn¡¯t well received, and Job responded with scathing sarcasm: ¡°Wisdom will die with you!¡±(12:2). He knew the dissatisfying taste of textbook answers to real-world problems. It¡¯s easy to be critical of Job¡¯s friends for their failure to see the big picture. But how often are we too quick with answers to questions we don¡¯t truly understand? People do want answers. But more than that, they want to know we hear and understand. They want to know we care. — Tim Gustafson		[ 욥기 11:7 - 11:20 ] - 찬송가 220 장 지혜와 권능이 하나님께 있고 계략과 명철도 그에게 속하였나니 - 욥기 12:13 한 여인이 내가 근무하고 있는 주거지원 센터에 절박한 목소리로 전화를 걸어 왔습니다. 그녀가 세내어 살고 있는 집이 난방장치가 고장 나서 마치 가구가 들어있는 냉동고처럼 되었다는 것입니다. 몹시 당황한 그녀는 어떻게 하면 어린아이들을 보호할 수 있겠느냐고 물었습니다. 나는 즉시 규정에 따라 사무적인 어투로 이렇게 대답해주었습니다, “호텔로 옮기신 후 집주인에게 청구서를 보내시면 됩니다.” 그녀는 화를 내며 전화를 끊었습니다. 그 여인의 질문에 대해 나는 교과서적인 대답은 할 줄은 알았지만 그녀의 마음은 전혀 헤아리지 못했습니다. 그녀는 자신의 두려움과 절망감을 누군가가 이해해주기를 원했던 것입니다. 그녀는 자기가 혼자가 아니라는 것을 알고 싶었던 것이었습니다. 한마디로, 나는 그 여인을 무시해버렸던 것입니다. 욥이 모든 것을 잃어버린 후, 친구들은 해결책은 말해주었지만 그를 이해하지는 못했습니다. 소발은 욥에게 지금 그가 할 일은 전심으로 하나님을 위해 사는 것뿐이라고 하면서, 그렇게 하면 “너의 생명의 날이 대낮보다 밝으리라”고 했습니다(11:17). 그 충고는 전혀 받아들여지지 않았고, 오히려 욥은 통렬하게 비꼬며 “너희가 죽으면 지혜도 죽겠구나”(12:2)라고 말했습니다. 그는 교과서에 쓰여 있는 해답은 실제 문제에는 별로 도움이 되지 않는다는 것을 알았던 것입니다. 큰 그림을 보지 못한 욥의 친구들을 비판하기는 쉽지만, 우리도 제대로 이해하지 못하는 질문에 성급하게 답변하는 경우가 얼마나 많습니까? 사람들은 물론 문제의 해답을 원합니다. 하지만 그들이 그보다 더 원하는 것은, 우리가 듣고 이해해주는 것입니다. 그들은 우리가 관심을 가지고 있다는 것을 알고 싶어 합니다.

Father, help us to be a friend first before we offer advice to others. Thank You for the privilege of sharing our hearts with You in prayer. Thank You for sending us Your Holy Spirit so that we will never be alone.

Before people want to hear what you say, they want to know that you care.

Job 11:7–20

[7] "Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty?
[8] They are higher than heaven--what can you do? Deeper than Sheol--what can you know?
[9] Their measure is longer than the earth And broader than the sea.
[10] "If He passes by, imprisons, and gathers to judgment, Then who can hinder Him?
[11] For He knows deceitful men; He sees wickedness also. Will He not then consider it?
[12] For an empty-headed man will be wise, When a wild donkey's colt is born a man.
[13] "If you would prepare your heart, And stretch out your hands toward Him;
[14] If iniquity were in your hand, and you put it far away, And would not let wickedness dwell in your tents;
[15] Then surely you could lift up your face without spot; Yes, you could be steadfast, and not fear;
[16] Because you would forget your misery, And remember it as waters that have passed away,
[17] And your life would be brighter than noonday. Though you were dark, you would be like the morning.
[18] And you would be secure, because there is hope; Yes, you would dig around you, and take your rest in safety.
[19] You would also lie down, and no one would make you afraid; Yes, many would court your favor.
[20] But the eyes of the wicked will fail, And they shall not escape, And their hope--loss of life!"

하나님 아버지, 우리가 다른 사람에게 충고를 해주기 전에 먼저 친구가 되어주도록 도와주소서. 기도를 통해 우리의 마음을 당신과 함께 나눌 수 있는 특권을 주셔서 감사합니다. 우리에게 성령님을 보내주셔서 결코 홀로 있지 않게 해주심을 감사합니다.

사람들은 당신의 말을 듣고 싶어 하기 이전에 당신이 관심이 있는지 먼저 알고 싶어 한다.

욥기 11:7–20

[7] 네가 하나님의 오묘함을 어찌 능히 측량하며 전능자를 어찌 능히 완전히 알겠느냐
[8] 하늘보다 높으시니 네가 무엇을 하겠으며 스올보다 깊으시니 네가 어찌 알겠느냐
[9] 그의 크심은 땅보다 길고 바다보다 넓으니라
[10] 하나님이 두루 다니시며 사람을 잡아 가두시고 재판을 여시면 누가 능히 막을소냐
[11] 하나님은 허망한 사람을 아시나니 악한 일은 상관하지 않으시는 듯하나 다 보시느니라
[12] 허망한 사람은 지각이 없나니 그의 출생함이 들나귀 새끼 같으니라
[13] 만일 네가 마음을 바로 정하고 주를 향하여 손을 들 때에
[14] 네 손에 죄악이 있거든 멀리 버리라 불의가 네 장막에 있지 못하게 하라
[15] 그리하면 네가 반드시 흠 없는 얼굴을 들게 되고 굳게 서서 두려움이 없으리니
[16] 곧 네 환난을 잊을 것이라 네가 기억할지라도 물이 흘러감 같을 것이며
[17] 네 생명의 날이 대낮보다 밝으리니 어둠이 있다 할지라도 아침과 같이 될 것이요
[18] 네가 희망이 있으므로 안전할 것이며 두루 살펴보고 평안히 쉬리라
[19] 네가 누워도 두렵게 할 자가 없겠고 많은 사람이 네게 은혜를 구하리라
[20] 그러나 악한 자들은 눈이 어두워서 도망할 곳을 찾지 못하리니 그들의 희망은 숨을 거두는 것이니라
