Defeat or Victory?		패배냐 승리냐
[ 1 John 5:1 - 5:13 ] - hymn 357 Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. - 1 John 5:4 Each year on June 18 the great Battle of Waterloo is recalled in what is now Belgium. On that day in 1815, Napoleon¡¯s French army was defeated by a multinational force commanded by the Duke of Wellington. Since then, the phrase ¡°to meet your Waterloo¡± has come to mean ¡°to be defeated by someone who is too strong for you or by a problem that is too difficult for you.¡± When it comes to our spiritual lives, some people feel that ultimate failure is inevitable and it¡¯s only a matter of time until each of us will ¡°meet our Waterloo.¡± But John refuted that pessimistic view when he wrote to followers of Jesus: ¡°Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith¡±(1 John 5:4). John weaves this theme of spiritual victory throughout his first letter as he urges us not to love the things this world offers, which will soon fade away(2:15–17). Instead, we are to love and please God, ¡°And this is what he promised us—eternal life¡±(v.25). While we may have ups and downs in life, and even some battles that feel like defeats, the ultimate victory is ours in Christ as we trust in His power. — David McCasland		[ 요한1서 5:1 - 5:13 ] - 찬송가 357 장 무릇 하나님께로부터 난 자마다 세상을 이기느니라 세상을 이기는 승리는 이것이니 우리의 믿음이니라 - 요한1서 5:4 매년 6월 18일이면 지금의 벨기에 지역에서 있었던 워털루 대전투가 떠오릅니다. 1815년 이날 나폴레옹이 이끄는 프랑스군은 웰링턴 공작이 이끄는 다국적 연합군에게 패배를 당했습니다. 그때 이후로 “워털루를 만나다”라는 말은 “나보다 힘이 센 사람에게, 혹은 내가 감당하기에 너무 힘든 문제로 패배를 당하다”라는 것을 의미하는 구절이 되었습니다. 영적인 삶에 관해서도, 어떤 이들은 궁극적으로 실패하는 것은 당연하며 우리 각자가 “자신의 워털루를 만나는” 것은 단지 시간문제일 뿐이라고 느낍니다. 그러나 요한은 이런 비관적인 견해에 반대하며 예수님을 따르는 이들에게 이렇게 썼습니다. “무릇 하나님께로부터 난 자마다 세상을 이기느니라 세상을 이기는 승리는 이것이니 우리의 믿음이니라”(요일 5:4). 요한은 이 세상에 있는 곧 사라질 것들을 사랑하지 말라고 권고하면서, 그의 첫 번째 서신 전체에 걸쳐 이 영적 승리의 주제를 엮어 넣었습니다(2:15-17). 이제 우리는 하나님을 사랑하고 그분을 기쁘게 해드려야 합니다. “그가 우리에게 약속하신 것은 이것이니 곧 영원한 생명이니라”(2:25). 우리의 삶에 기복이 있고 또 패배한 것 같은 전투가 있을 수도 있지만, 우리가 그리스도 안에서 그분의 능력을 신뢰할 때 최후의 승리는 우리의 것입니다.

Lord Jesus, Your ultimate victory in this fallen world is assured, and You ask us to share in it each day of our lives. By Your grace, enable us to overcome the world through faith and obedience to You.

When it comes to problems, the way out is to trust God on the way through.

1 John 5:1–13

[1] Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.
[2] By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments.
[3] For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
[4] For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith.
[5] Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
[6] This is He who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.
[7] For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
[8] And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
[9] If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son.
[10] He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
[11] And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
[12] He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
[13] These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

주 예수님, 이 타락한 세상을 이기신 주님의 최후 승리를 확신합니다. 주님은 우리가 그 승리 안에서 매일의 삶을 누리기를 원하십니다. 주님의 은혜로, 주님을 향한 믿음과 순종을 통해 이 세상을 이길 수 있게 하소서.

전적으로 하나님을 신뢰할 때 문제에서 벗어날 수 있다.

요한1서 5:1–13

[1] 예수께서 그리스도이심을 믿는 자마다 하나님께로부터 난 자니 또한 낳으신 이를 사랑하는 자마다 그에게서 난 자를 사랑하느니라
[2] 우리가 하나님을 사랑하고 그의 계명들을 지킬 때에 이로써 우리가 하나님의 자녀를 사랑하는 줄을 아느니라
[3] 하나님을 사랑하는 것은 이것이니 우리가 그의 계명들을 지키는 것이라 그의 계명들은 무거운 것이 아니로다
[4] 무릇 하나님께로부터 난 자마다 세상을 이기느니라 세상을 이기는 승리는 이것이니 우리의 믿음이니라
[5] 예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 자가 아니면 세상을 이기는 자가 누구냐
[6] 이는 물과 피로 임하신 이시니 곧 예수 그리스도시라 물로만 아니요 물과 피로 임하셨고 증언하는 이는 성령이시니 성령은 진리니라
[7] 증언하는 이가 셋이니
[8] 성령과 물과 피라 또한 이 셋은 합하여 하나이니라
[9] 만일 우리가 사람들의 증언을 받을진대 하나님의 증거는 더욱 크도다 하나님의 증거는 이것이니 그의 아들에 대하여 증언하신 것이니라
[10] 하나님의 아들을 믿는 자는 자기 안에 증거가 있고 하나님을 믿지 아니하는 자는 하나님을 거짓말하는 자로 만드나니 이는 하나님께서 그 아들에 대하여 증언하신 증거를 믿지 아니하였음이라
[11] 또 증거는 이것이니 하나님이 우리에게 영생을 주신 것과 이 생명이 그의 아들 안에 있는 그것이니라
[12] 아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있고 하나님의 아들이 없는 자에게는 생명이 없느니라
[13] 내가 하나님의 아들의 이름을 믿는 너희에게 이것을 쓰는 것은 너희로 하여금 너희에게 영생이 있음을 알게 하려 함이라
