The Beauty of Rome		로마의 아름다움
[ John 17:1 - 17:5 ] - hymn 149 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God. - John 17:3 The glory of the Roman Empire offered an expansive backdrop for the birth of Jesus. In 27 bc Rome¡¯s first emperor, Caesar Augustus, ended 200 years of civil war and began to replace rundown neighborhoods with monuments, temples, arenas, and government complexes. According to Roman historian Pliny the Elder, they were ¡°the most beautiful buildings the world has ever seen.¡± Yet even with her beauty, the Eternal City and its empire had a history of brutality that continued until Rome fell. Thousands of slaves, foreigners, revolutionaries, and army deserters were crucified on roadside poles as a warning to anyone who dared to defy the power of Rome. What irony that Jesus¡¯s death on a Roman cross turned out to reveal an eternal glory that made the pride of Rome look like the momentary beauty of a sunset! Who could have imagined that in the public curse and agony of the cross we would find the eternal glory of the love, presence, and kingdom of our God? Who could have foreseen that all heaven and earth would one day sing, ¡°Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!¡±(Rev.5:12). — Mart DeHaan		[ 요한복음 17:1 - 17:5 ] - 찬송가 149 장 영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님을 아는 것이니이다 - 요한복음 17:3 로마제국의 영광은 예수님의 탄생을 위한 광범위한 배경을 제공해주었습니다. 기원 전 27년 로마의 첫 황제 시저 아우구스투스는 200여년에 걸친 내전을 끝내고, 쇠락한 지역들을 기념비와 사원, 경기장, 그리고 정부 청사들로 대체하기 시작했습니다. 로마의 역사학자 대 플리니우스에 따르면, “그것들은 세상에서 볼 수 있는 가장 아름다운 건물들”이었다고 합니다. 그런 아름다움에도 불구하고, 이 영원의 도시와 그 제국은 로마가 망할 때까지 계속된 잔혹한 역사를 지니고 있었습니다. 로마 제국의 권위에 감히 저항하는 사람들에게 주는 경고의 표시로 수많은 노예와 외국인, 혁명가, 군대 탈영병들이 십자가에 처형되어 도로변의 기둥에 내걸렸습니다. 하지만 예수님이 로마의 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으심으로 드러내신 영원한 영광은 로마의 자랑거리를 고작 한순간 보이다 사라지는 아름다운 석양 정도로 비쳐지게 만들었으니, 이 얼마나 아이러니한 일인지요! 대중의 조롱거리이며 고통스러운 십자가에서 하나님의 사랑과 임재와 하나님 나라에 의해 드러난 영원한 영광을 볼 수 있을 것이라고 어느 누가 상상이나 했겠습니까? 온 하늘과 땅이 어느 날 “죽임을 당하신 어린 양은 능력과 부와 지혜와 힘과 존귀와 영광과 찬송을 받으시기에 합당하도다”(계 5:12) 하며 노래하게 될 것을 누가 예견할 수 있었을까요!

Father in heaven, please help us to reflect the heart of Your sacrifice for the world. May Your love become our love, Your life our life, and Your glory our never-ending joy.

The Lamb who died is the Lord who lives!

John 17:1–5

[1] Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You,
[2] "as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.
[3] "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
[4] "I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.
[5] "And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

하늘에 계신 아버지, 이 세상을 위한 하나님의 희생의 마음을 저희가 나타내도록 도와주소서. 하나님의 사랑이 우리의 사랑이 되고, 하나님의 생명이 우리의 생명이 되며, 하나님의 영광이 우리의 꺼지지 않는 기쁨이 되게 하소서.

죽으신 어린양은 지금 살아 계신 주님이시다!

요한복음 17:1–5

[1] 예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고 눈을 들어 하늘을 우러러 이르시되 아버지여 때가 이르렀사오니 아들을 영화롭게 하사 아들로 아버지를 영화롭게 하게 하옵소서
[2] 아버지께서 아들에게 주신 모든 사람에게 영생을 주게 하시려고 만민을 다스리는 권세를 아들에게 주셨음이로소이다
[3] 영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님과 그가 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이니이다
[4] 아버지께서 내게 하라고 주신 일을 내가 이루어 아버지를 이 세상에서 영화롭게 하였사오니
[5] 아버지여 창세 전에 내가 아버지와 함께 가졌던 영화로써 지금도 아버지와 함께 나를 영화롭게 하옵소서
