[ 2 Chronicles 16:7 - 16:14 ] - hymn 338 The eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. - 2 Chronicles 16:9 Life seems straightforward in the laws of the Old Testament. Obey God and get blessed. Disobey Him and expect trouble. It¡¯s a satisfying theology. But is it that simple? King Asa¡¯s story seems to fit the pattern. He led his people away from false gods and his kingdom thrived (2 Chron.15:1–19). Then late in his reign, he depended on himself instead of God (16:2–7) and the rest of his life was marked by war and illness (v.12). It¡¯s easy to look at that story and draw a simple conclusion. But when the prophet Hanani warned Asa, he said that God will ¡°strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him¡±(16:9). Why do our hearts need strengthening? Because doing the right thing may require courage and perseverance. Job got the starring role in a cosmic tragedy. His crime? ¡°He [was] blameless and upright¡± (Job 1:8). Joseph, falsely accused of attempted rape, languished in prison for years—to serve God¡¯s good purposes (Gen.39:19–41:1). And Jeremiah was beaten and put in stocks (Jer.20:2). What was the prophet¡¯s offense? Telling the truth to rebellious people (26:15). Life is not simple, and God¡¯s ways are not our ways. Making the right decision may come at a cost. But in God¡¯s eternal plan, His blessings arrive in due time. — Tim Gustafson		[ 역대하 16:7 - 16:14 ] - 찬송가 338 장 여호와의 눈은 온 땅을 두루 감찰하사 전심으로 자기에게 향하는 자들을 위하여 능력을 베푸시나니-역대하 16:9 구약의 율법으로만 보면 인생은 단순해 보입니다. ‘하나님께 순종하면 복을 받을 것이고 불순종하면 해를 당할 것이다.’ 참 만족스러운 신학이지요. 하지만 그게 그렇게 단순할까요? 아사왕의 이야기는 그 원칙에 부합되는 것처럼 보입니다. 그는 백성들을 거짓 신들로부터 이끌어내었고 그의 왕국은 번성했습니다(대하 15:1-19). 그러나 그는 통치 말기에 하나님이 아닌 자기 자신을 의지하였고(16:2-7), 그의 나머지 삶은 전쟁과 병마로 얼룩졌습니다(12절). 그 이야기를 보고 단순한 결론을 내리기가 쉽습니다. 그러나 하나니 선지자가 아사왕에게 경고할 때, 그는 하나님이 “전심전력으로 주님께 매달리는 이들을 힘 있게 해주신다”(16:9, 새번역)라고 말했습니다. 왜 우리의 마음이 강하게 될 필요가 있을까요? 옳은 일을 하려면 용기와 인내가 필요하기 때문입니다. 욥은 엄청난 비극의 주인공 역할을 맡았습니다. 그의 죄는 무엇이었습니까? “그는 온전하고 정직”하였습니다(욥 1:8). 요셉은 하나님의 선한 목적을 이루기 위해 강간 미수의 누명을 쓰고 여러 해 동안 감옥에서 고생하였습니다(창 39:19-41:1). 그리고 예레미야는 매를 맞고 차꼬에 채워졌습니다(렘 20:2). 예레미야 선지자의 죄가 무엇이었습니까? 반항하는 백성들에게 진실을 말한 것이었습니다(26:15). 인생은 단순하지 않으며, 하나님의 방식은 우리의 방식과 다릅니다. 올바른 결정은 때로 희생을 동반하기도 합니다. 그러나 하나님의 영원한 계획안에서 그분의 축복은 때에 맞춰 옵니다.

Lord, thank You for the examples of courage and obedience in Your Word. Help us learn from their mistakes and from their wise choices, as we make our choice to serve You.

God helps those who depend on Him.

2 Chronicles 16:7–14

[7] And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him: "Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the LORD your God, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hand.
[8] "Were the Ethiopians and the Lubim not a huge army with very many chariots and horsemen? Yet, because you relied on the LORD, He delivered them into your hand.
[9] "For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. In this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars."
[10] Then Asa was angry with the seer, and put him in prison, for he was enraged at him because of this. And Asa oppressed some of the people at that time.
[11] Note that the acts of Asa, first and last, are indeed written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
[12] And in the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the LORD, but the physicians.
[13] So Asa rested with his fathers; he died in the forty-first year of his reign.
[14] They buried him in his own tomb, which he had made for himself in the City of David; and they laid him in the bed which was filled with spices and various ingredients prepared in a mixture of ointments. They made a very great burning for him.

주님, 성경이 보여주는 용기와 순종의 본보기들을 감사합니다. 우리가 주님을 섬기기로 선택하오니, 그들의 실수로부터, 또 그들의 지혜로운 선택으로부터 배울 수 있도록 도와주소서.

하나님은 그분을 의지하는 자들을 도와주신다.

역대하 16:7–14

[7] 그 때에 선견자 하나니가 유다 왕 아사에게 나와서 그에게 이르되 왕이 아람 왕을 의지하고 왕의 하나님 여호와를 의지하지 아니하였으므로 아람 왕의 군대가 왕의 손에서 벗어났나이다
[8] 구스 사람과 룹 사람의 군대가 크지 아니하며 말과 병거가 심히 많지 아니하더이까 그러나 왕이 여호와를 의지하였으므로 여호와께서 왕의 손에 넘기셨나이다
[9] 여호와의 눈은 온 땅을 두루 감찰하사 전심으로 자기에게 향하는 자들을 위하여 능력을 베푸시나니 이 일은 왕이 망령되이 행하였은즉 이 후부터는 왕에게 전쟁이 있으리이다 하매
[10] 아사가 노하여 선견자를 옥에 가두었으니 이는 그의 말에 크게 노하였음이며 그 때에 아사가 또 백성 중에서 몇 사람을 학대하였더라
[11] 아사의 처음부터 끝까지의 행적은 유다와 이스라엘 열왕기에 기록되니라
[12] 아사가 왕이 된 지 삼십구 년에 그의 발이 병들어 매우 위독했으나 병이 있을 때에 그가 여호와께 구하지 아니하고 의원들에게 구하였더라
[13] 아사가 왕위에 있은 지 사십일 년 후에 죽어 그의 조상들과 함께 누우매
[14] 다윗 성에 자기를 위하여 파 두었던 묘실에 무리가 장사하되 그의 시체를 법대로 만든 각양 향 재료를 가득히 채운 상에 두고 또 그것을 위하여 많이 분향하였더라
