[ James 1:22 - 1:27 ] - hymn 211 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress. - James 1:27 ¡°My mother gave us chili peppers before we went to bed,¡± said Samuel, recalling his difficult childhood in sub-Saharan Africa. ¡°We drank water to cool our mouths, and then we would feel full.¡± He added, ¡°It did not work well.¡± Government upheaval had forced Samuel¡¯s father to flee for his life, leaving their mother as the family¡¯s sole provider. Then his brother contracted sickle cell anemia, and they couldn¡¯t afford medical care. Their mother took them to church, but it didn¡¯t mean much to Sam. How could God allow our family to suffer like this? he wondered. Then one day a man learned about their plight. He got the essential medicine and brought it to them. ¡°On Sunday we will go to this man¡¯s church,¡± his mother announced. Right away Sam sensed something different about this church. They celebrated their relationship with Jesus by living His love. That was three decades ago. Today in this part of the world, Sam has started more than 20 churches, a large school, and a home for orphans. He¡¯s continuing the legacy of true religion taught by James, the brother of Jesus, who urged us not to ¡°merely listen to the word¡± but to ¡°do what it says¡±(James 1:22). ¡°Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress¡±(v.27). There¡¯s no telling what a simple act of kindness done in Jesus¡¯ name can do.		[ 야고보서 1:22 - 1:27 ] - 찬송가 211 장 하나님 아버지 앞에서 정결하고 더러움이 없는 경건은 곧 고아와 과부를 그 환난 중에 돌보고 - 야고보서 1:27 “어머니는 잠자리에 들기 전에 우리에게 매운 고추를 주셨지요.” 사무엘은 사하라 사막 남쪽의 아프리카에서의 어려웠던 어린 시절을 회상하면서 말했습니다. “우리는 입이 시원해질 때까지 물을 마셨고 포만감을 느끼게 되었습니다.” 그는 이렇게 덧붙였습니다. “하지만 그 방법은 별로 효과가 없었답니다.” 정부가 전복되자 사무엘의 아버지는 목숨을 부지하기 위해 다른 나라로 망명하였고, 어머니가 그 가족의 생계를 혼자 책임지게 되었습니다. 그 후 사무엘의 형이 겸상적혈구 빈혈증에 걸렸는데, 그들은 그 치료비를 감당할 수가 없었습니다. 사무엘의 어머니는 아이들을 데리고 교회로 갔지만, 그에게는 그다지 별 의미가 없었습니다. 그는 “하나님은 어떻게 우리 가정에 이토록 어려운 고난을 허락하실 수 있지?”라고 생각하였습니다. 그런데 어느 날 어떤 사람이 그들의 역경에 대해 알게 되었습니다. 그는 필요한 약을 가져다 그들에게 주었습니다. “이번 주일에는 우리가 그분이 다니는 교회에 갈 거란다.”라고 어머니가 말했습니다. 샘은 이 교회가 무언가 다르다는 것을 곧바로 알게 되었습니다. 그들은 예수님의 참 사랑을 몸소 실천하며 살면서 예수님과의 관계를 기뻐하고 있었습니다. 그것이 30년 전의 일이었습니다. 샘은 현재 한 지역에 20개가 넘는 교회를 개척하였고, 큰 학교와 고아들을 위한 집을 지었습니다. 그는 단지 말씀을 듣기만 하지 말고 말씀을 행하는 자가 되라고(약 1:22) 우리에게 충고한 예수님의 형제 야고보가 가르쳐준 참 신앙의 유산을 계속 이어가고 있습니다. “하나님 아버지 앞에서 정결하고 더러움이 없는 경건은 곧 고아와 과부를 그 환난 중에 돌보고 또 자기를 지켜 세속에 물들지 아니하는 그것이니라”(27절). 예수님 이름으로 베푼 작은 친절이 얼마나 큰일을 할 수 있는지 아무도 모릅니다.

Heavenly Father, as we encounter injustice and needs in this broken world, help us not to turn away but to do whatever we can. Please bless our small efforts as we do them in Your Son¡¯s name.

Sometimes the best witness is kindness.

James 1:22–27

[22] But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
[23] For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;
[24] for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
[25] But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
[26] If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless.
[27] Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

하나님 아버지, 이 깨어진 세상에서 불공평과 도움의 손길을 외면하지 말게 하시고, 무엇이든지 하도록 도와주소서. 주님의 이름으로 그들을 도우려는 우리의 조그만 노력에 축복하소서.

때로는 친절을 베푸는 것이 최고의 증인이 되기도 한다.

야고보서 1:22–27

[22] 너희는 말씀을 행하는 자가 되고 듣기만 하여 자신을 속이는 자가 되지 말라
[23] 누구든지 말씀을 듣고 행하지 아니하면 그는 거울로 자기의 생긴 얼굴을 보는 사람과 같아서
[24] 제 자신을 보고 가서 그 모습이 어떠했는지를 곧 잊어버리거니와
[25] 자유롭게 하는 온전한 율법을 들여다보고 있는 자는 듣고 잊어버리는 자가 아니요 실천하는 자니 이 사람은 그 행하는 일에 복을 받으리라
[26] 누구든지 스스로 경건하다 생각하며 자기 혀를 재갈 물리지 아니하고 자기 마음을 속이면 이 사람의 경건은 헛것이라
[27] 하나님 아버지 앞에서 정결하고 더러움이 없는 경건은 곧 고아와 과부를 그 환난중에 돌보고 또 자기를 지켜 세속에 물들지 아니하는 그것이니라
