[ Hebrews 11:8 - 11:16 ] - hymn 384 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. - Hebrews 11:1 In January 1915, the ship Endurance was trapped and crushed in the ice off the coast of Antarctica. The group of polar explorers, led by Ernest Shackleton, survived and managed to reach Elephant Island in three small lifeboats. Trapped on this uninhabited island, far from normal shipping lanes, they had one hope. On April 24, 1916, 22 men watched as Shackleton and five comrades set out in a tiny lifeboat for South Georgia, an island 800 miles away. The odds seemed impossible, and if they failed, they would all certainly die. What joy, then, when more than four months later a boat appeared on the horizon with Shackleton on its bow shouting, ¡°Are you all well?¡± And the call came back, ¡°All safe! All well!¡± What held those men together and kept them alive over those months? Faith and hope placed in one man. They believed that Shackleton would fi-nd a way to save them. This human example of faith and hope echoes the faith of the heroes listed in Hebrews 11. Their faith in the ¡°substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen¡± kept them going through great difficulties and trials (Heb.11:1 NKJV). As we look out upon the horizon of our own problems, may we not despair. May we have hope through the certainty of our faith in the One Man—Jesus, our God and Savior. - Randy Kilgore		[ 히브리서 11:8 - 11:16 ] - 찬송가 384 장 믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거니 - 히브리서 11:1 1915년 1월, ‘인듀어런스’라는 배가 남극 연안의 얼음에 갇혔다가 침몰하였습니다. 어니스트 섀클턴이 이끄는 남극탐험 팀은 살아남아 작은 구명선 3척으로 엘리펀트 섬에 가까스로 도달했습니다. 정기 항로로부터 멀리 떨어진 이 무인도에 갇혀 있는 그들에겐 한 가지 희망이 남아있었습니다. 1916년 4월 24일, 섀클턴과 5명의 팀원이 작은 구명선 1척을 타고 1290킬로미터 떨어진 사우스조지아로 떠날 때 남은 22명이 그것을 지켜보았습니다. 가능성은 거의 없어보였고, 만약 그들이 실패하면 모두 죽을 것이 확실했습니다. 그런데, 이게 웬일입니까! ‘4개월’이 더 지난 후 수평선 끝에 배 한 척이 나타나더니 섀클턴이 뱃머리에서 “모두 괜찮습니까?”라고 외치는 것이었습니다. 그 말에 “모두 안전! 모두 무사!”라는 소리가 되돌아왔습니다. 무엇이 그들을 단결하게 했고 4개월 이상 살아남게 했을까요? 믿음과 희망을 걸었던 한 사람이 있었기 때문입니다. 그들은 섀클턴이 그들을 구해줄 방법을 찾을 거라고 믿었습니다. 이러한 믿음과 희망의 예를 히브리서 11장에 열거된 영웅들의 믿음에서 찾을 수 있습니다. 이들은 “바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거”를 믿음으로써 큰 어려움과 시련을 뚫고 나아갈 수 있었습니다(히 11:1). 우리도 우리 문제를 보다 멀리 바라본다면 절망하지 않을 것입니다. 우리도 한 사람, 곧 우리 하나님이시요 구주가 되시는 예수님에 대한 믿음을 확신함으로써 희망을 갖게 되기를 소원합니다.

Thank You, Father, for the promise of forgiveness made possible by Jesus. May that promise lighten the darkest of our days.

The hope of Jesus shines brightly even on our darkest day.

Hebrews 11:8-16

[8] By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
[9] By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise;
[10] for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
[11] By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.
[12] Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude--innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.
[13] These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
[14] For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland.
[15] And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return.
[16] But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

하나님 아버지, 예수님을 통해 가능해진 죄사함의 약속에 감사드립니다. 그 약속이 우리 삶의 가장 어두운 순간에 빛이 되게 하소서.

우리 삶의 가장 어두운 순간에도 예수님의 소망은 밝게 빛난다.

히브리서 11:8-16

[8] 믿음으로 아브라함은 부르심을 받았을 때에 순종하여 장래의 유업으로 받을 땅에 나아갈새 갈 바를 알지 못하고 나아갔으며
[9] 믿음으로 그가 이방의 땅에 있는 것 같이 약속의 땅에 거류하여 동일한 약속을 유업으로 함께 받은 이삭 및 야곱과 더불어 장막에 거하였으니
[10] 이는 그가 하나님이 계획하시고 지으실 터가 있는 성을 바랐음이라
[11] 믿음으로 사라 자신도 나이가 많아 단산하였으나 잉태할 수 있는 힘을 얻었으니 이는 약속하신 이를 미쁘신 줄 알았음이라
[12] 이러므로 죽은 자와 같은 한 사람으로 말미암아 하늘의 허다한 별과 또 해변의 무수한 모래와 같이 많은 후손이 생육하였느니라
[13] 이 사람들은 다 믿음을 따라 죽었으며 약속을 받지 못하였으되 그것들을 멀리서 보고 환영하며 또 땅에서는 외국인과 나그네임을 증언하였으니
[14] 그들이 이같이 말하는 것은 자기들이 본향 찾는 자임을 나타냄이라
[15] 그들이 나온 바 본향을 생각하였더라면 돌아갈 기회가 있었으려니와
[16] 그들이 이제는 더 나은 본향을 사모하니 곧 하늘에 있는 것이라 이러므로 하나님이 그들의 하나님이라 일컬음 받으심을 부끄러워하지 아니하시고 그들을 위하여 한 성을 예비하셨느니라
