Even the most reputable sites have no shortage of rude rants, uninformed insults, and name-calling. The book of Proverbs was collected about 3,000 years ago, but its timeless wisdom is as up-to-date as today¡¯s breaking news. Two proverbs in chapter 26 seem at first glance to contradict each other, yet they apply perfectly to social media. ¡°Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him¡±(v.4). And then, ¡°Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes¡±(v.5). The balance in those statements is in the ¡°according to¡±: Don¡¯t answer in the way a fool would answer. But respond so that foolishness is not considered wisdom. My problem is that the foolishness I encoun-ter is often my own. I have at times posted a sarcastic comment or turned someone else¡¯s statement back on them. God hates it when I treat my fellow human beings with such disrespect, even when they¡¯re also being foolish. The God we serve gives us an amazing range of freedoms. And so we are free to choose what we will say, and when and how we say it. Proverbs 26:1-12

[1] As snow in summer and rain in harvest, So honor is not fitting for a fool.
[2] Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, So a curse without cause shall not alight.
[3] A whip for the horse, A bridle for the donkey, And a rod for the fool's back.
[4] Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Lest you also be like him.
[5] Answer a fool according to his folly, Lest he be wise in his own eyes.
[6] He who sends a message by the hand of a fool Cuts off his own feet and drinks violence.
[7] Like the legs of the lame that hang limp Is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
[8] Like one who binds a stone in a sling Is he who gives honor to a fool.

마음에 새겨야 할 것들: 내가 말하는 것이 진실인가, 그리고 사랑이 담겨있는가? 나의 동기는 무엇인가? 그것이 다른 사람에게 도움이 되는가? 그 말이 예수님의 성품을 나타내는 말인가?

사랑이 궁극적인 목표가 되게 하라.

잠언 26:1-12

[1] 미련한 자에게는 영예가 적당하지 아니하니 마치 여름에 눈 오는 것과 추수 때에 비 오는 것 같으니라
[2] 까닭 없는 저주는 참새가 떠도는 것과 제비가 날아가는 것 같이 이루어지지 아니하느니라
[3] 말에게는 채찍이요 나귀에게는 재갈이요 미련한 자의 등에는 막대기니라
[4] 미련한 자의 어리석은 것을 따라 대답하지 말라 두렵건대 너도 그와 같을까 하노라
[5] 미련한 자에게는 그의 어리석음을 따라 대답하라 두렵건대 그가 스스로 지혜롭게 여길까 하노라
[6] 미련한 자 편에 기별하는 것은 자기의 발을 베어 버림과 해를 받음과 같으니라
[7] 저는 자의 다리는 힘 없이 달렸나니 미련한 자의 입의 잠언도 그러하니라
[8] 미련한 자에게 영예를 주는 것은 돌을 물매에 매는 것과 같으니라
[9] 미련한 자의 입의 잠언은 술 취한 자가 손에 든 가시나무 같으니라
[10] 장인이 온갖 것을 만들지라도 미련한 자를 고용하는 것은 지나가는 행인을 고용함과 같으니라
[11] 개가 그 토한 것을 도로 먹는 것 같이 미련한 자는 그 미련한 것을 거듭 행하느니라
[12] 네가 스스로 지혜롭게 여기는 자를 보느냐 그보다 미련한 자에게 오히려 희망이 있느니라
