A Letter from the Battlefield		전장에서의 편지
[ 2 Timothy 4:1 - 4:8 ] - hymn 384 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. - 2 Timothy 4:7 For more than two decades, Andrew Carroll has been urging people not to throw away the letters written by family members or friends during a time of war. Carroll, director of the Center for American War Letters at Chapman University in California, considers them an irre-placeable link to tie families together and open a door of understanding. ¡°Younger generations are reading these letters,¡± Carroll says, ¡°and asking questions and saying, ¡®Now I understand what you endured, what you sacrificed.¡¯¡± When the apostle Paul was imprisoned in Rome and knew his life would soon end, he wrote a letter to a young man whom he considered a ¡°son in the faith,¡± Timothy. Like a soldier on the battlefield, Paul opened his heart to him: ¡°The time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing¡± (2 Tim.4:6-8). When we read the letters in the Bible that the heroes of the Christian faith have left for us and grasp what they endured because of their love for Christ, we gain courage to follow their example and to stand strong for those who come after us. - David McCasland		[ 디모데후서 4:1 - 4:8 ] - 찬송가 384 장 나는 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니 - 디모데후서 4:7 이십년을 넘게 앤드루 캐롤은 사람들에게 가족이나 친구들이 전쟁 중에 보내온 편지들을 버리지 말라고 당부해왔습니다. 캘리포니아 주 채프만 대학의 미국 전쟁편지 센터의 책임자인 캐롤은 이 편지들이 가족들을 함께 묶어주며 이해를 넓혀주는 아주 중요한 연결고리라고 여깁니다. 캐롤은 말합니다. “젊은 세대들이 이 편지들을 읽고, 질문하고, 그러고 나선 ‘당신이 무엇을 견뎠고 무엇을 희생했는지 이제 알겠습니다.’라고 말합니다.” 바울사도가 로마의 옥에 갇혀 그의 삶이 곧 끝나게 되리라는 것을 알았을 때, “믿음 안에서 참 아들”로 여겼던 젊은 디모데에게 편지를 썼습니다. 마치 전장의 군인처럼 바울은 디모데에게 자신의 마음을 쏟아놓았습니다. “전제와 같이 내가 벌써 부어지고 나의 떠날 시각이 가까웠도다 나는 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니 이제 후로는 나를 위하여 의의 면류관이 예비되었으므로 주 곧 의로우신 재판장이 그 날에 내게 주실 것이며 내게만 아니라 주의 나타나심을 사모하는 모든 자에게도니라”(딤후 4:6-8). 믿음의 영웅들이 우리를 위해 성경에 남겨놓은 편지들을 읽고 그리스도를 향한 사랑 때문에 그들이 견디어 낸 고난들을 이해하게 될 때, 우리는 믿음의 선진들의 모범을 따라 우리 후세들을 위해 굳건히 설 수 있는 용기를 얻게 됩니다.

Lord, give us strength for the spiritual battles we face today, knowing that You have won the ultimate victory and that we will one day live eternally with You.

Run the race with eternity in view.

2 Timothy 4:1-8

[1] I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:
[2] Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
[3] For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
[4] and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
[5] But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
[6] For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.
[7] I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
[8] Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.

주님, 이미 주님이 최후의 승리를 거두셨고 우리가 장래에 주님과 함께 영원히 살게 될 것을 알고서, 오늘 부딪치게 될 영적 전투를 싸울 힘을 우리에게 주시옵소서.

영원을 바라보며 경주를 달려라.

디모데후서 4:1-8

[1] 하나님 앞과 살아 있는 자와 죽은 자를 심판하실 그리스도 예수 앞에서 그가 나타나실 것과 그의 나라를 두고 엄히 명하노니
[2] 너는 말씀을 전파하라 때를 얻든지 못 얻든지 항상 힘쓰라 범사에 오래 참음과 가르침으로 경책하며 경계하며 권하라
[3] 때가 이르리니 사람이 바른 교훈을 받지 아니하며 귀가 가려워서 자기의 사욕을 따를 스승을 많이 두고
[4] 또 그 귀를 진리에서 돌이켜 허탄한 이야기를 따르리라
[5] 그러나 너는 모든 일에 신중하여 고난을 받으며 전도자의 일을 하며 네 직무를 다하라
[6] 전제와 같이 내가 벌써 부어지고 나의 떠날 시각이 가까웠도다
[7] 나는 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니
