[ Romans 6:14 - 6:23 ] - hymn 321 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. — Hebrews 12:14 We often see surveys that ask people if they are happy, satisfied with their work, or enjoying life. But I¡¯ve never seen an opinion poll that asked, ¡°Are you holy?¡± How would you answer that question? One Bible dictionary defines holiness as ¡°separation to God and conduct fitting for those separated.¡± Author Frederick Buechner said that when writing about a person¡¯s character, ¡°nothing is harder to make real than holiness.¡± He adds that ¡°holiness is not a human quality at all, like virtue. Holiness is ... not something that people do, but something that God does in them.¡± Romans 6 presents the stunning gift that God gives us through faith in Christ: ¡°We were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life¡±(v.4). The pursuit of holiness occurs daily as we yield ourselves in obedience to the Lord instead of following our old ways of self-gratification. ¡°Now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life¡±(v.22 nlt). Are you becoming more holy? By God¡¯s grace and power, the answer can be a resounding ¡°Yes! Father, I want to cooperate with You in Your work of changing me to become more like Jesus. Help me to walk in Your ways. Without Your work in me, nothing of lasting value will occur in my growth in holiness.

The choice to pursue holiness is a matter of life or death.

Romans 6:14-23

[14] For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
[15] What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!
[16] Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
[17] But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
[18] And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
[19] I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
[20] For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.
[21] What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
[22] But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
[23] For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

거룩한 삶을 살 것인가 하는 선택은 죽느냐 사느냐의 문제이다.

로마서 6:14-23

[14] 죄가 너희를 주장하지 못하리니 이는 너희가 법 아래에 있지 아니하고 은혜 아래에 있음이라
[15] 그런즉 어찌하리요 우리가 법 아래에 있지 아니하고 은혜 아래에 있으니 죄를 지으리요 그럴 수 없느니라
[16] 너희 자신을 종으로 내주어 누구에게 순종하든지 그 순종함을 받는 자의 종이 되는 줄을 너희가 알지 못하느냐 혹은 죄의 종으로 사망에 이르고 혹은 순종의 종으로 의에 이르느니라
[17] 하나님께 감사하리로다 너희가 본래 죄의 종이더니 너희에게 전하여 준 바 교훈의 본을 마음으로 순종하여
[18] 죄로부터 해방되어 의에게 종이 되었느니라
[19] 너희 육신이 연약하므로 내가 사람의 예대로 말하노니 전에 너희가 너희 지체를 부정과 불법에 내주어 불법에 이른 것 같이 이제는 너희 지체를 의에게 종으로 내주어 거룩함에 이르라
[20] 너희가 죄의 종이 되었을 때에는 의에 대하여 자유로웠느니라
[21] 너희가 그 때에 무슨 열매를 얻었느냐 이제는 너희가 그 일을 부끄러워하나니 이는 그 마지막이 사망임이라
[22] 그러나 이제는 너희가 죄로부터 해방되고 하나님께 종이 되어 거룩함에 이르는 열매를 맺었으니 그 마지막은 영생이라
[23] 죄의 삯은 사망이요 하나님의 은사는 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에 있는 영생이니라
