[ Matthew 2:13 - 2:21 ] - hymn 88 Take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt. — Matthew 2:13 One year when our family was traveling through Ohio on the way to Grandma¡¯s house, we arrived in Columbus just as a tornado warning was issued. Suddenly everything changed as we feared that our children might be in danger. I mention that story to help us imagine what it was like for Joseph¡¯s family as he, Mary, and their young child traveled to Egypt. Herod, not a tornado, threatened them as he sought to kill their little boy. Imagine how frightening it was for them, knowing that ¡°Herod [sought] the young Child to destroy Him¡±(Matt.2:13). We usually take a more idyllic view of Christmastime¦¡lowing cattle and kneeling shepherds in a peaceful scene. But there was no peace for Jesus¡¯family as they sought to escape Herod¡¯s horror. Only when an angel told them it was safe did the family go out of Egypt and back home to Nazareth (vv.20-23). Consider the awe we should feel for the incarnation. Jesus, who enjoyed the majesty of heaven in partnership with the Father, set it all aside to be born in poverty, to face many dangers, and to be crucified for us. Jesus our Savior left heaven above,
Coming to earth as a Servant with love;
Laying aside all His glory He came,
Bringing salvation through faith in His name. — Hess

Jesus came to earth for us
so we could go to heaven with Him.

Matthew 2:13-21

[13] Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him."
[14] When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt,
[15] and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son."
[16] Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.
[17] Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying:
[18] "A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more."
[19] But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
[20] saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead."
[21] Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

우리 구주 예수님이 하늘의 천국을 떠나
사랑으로 섬기시려 이 땅에 오셨네
모든 영광 다 버리고 이곳에 오셨네
그 이름을 믿는 믿음을 통해 구원을 얻게 하시려고

우리가 주님과 함께 천국으로 갈 수 있도록
예수님이 우리를 위해 이 땅에 오셨다.

마태복음 2:13-21

[13] 그들이 떠난 후에 주의 사자가 요셉에게 현몽하여 이르되 헤롯이 아기를 찾아 죽이려 하니 일어나 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 애굽으로 피하여 내가 네게 이르기까지 거기 있으라 하시니
[14] 요셉이 일어나서 밤에 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 애굽으로 떠나가
[15] 헤롯이 죽기까지 거기 있었으니 이는 주께서 선지자를 통하여 말씀하신 바 애굽으로부터 내 아들을 불렀다 함을 이루려 하심이라
[16] 이에 헤롯이 박사들에게 속은 줄 알고 심히 노하여 사람을 보내어 베들레헴과 그 모든 지경 안에 있는 사내아이를 박사들에게 자세히 알아본 그 때를 기준하여 두 살부터 그 아래로 다 죽이니
[17] 이에 선지자 예레미야를 통하여 말씀하신 바
[18] 라마에서 슬퍼하며 크게 통곡하는 소리가 들리니 라헬이 그 자식을 위하여 애곡하는 것이라 그가 자식이 없으므로 위로 받기를 거절하였도다 함이 이루어졌느니라
[19] 헤롯이 죽은 후에 주의 사자가 애굽에서 요셉에게 현몽하여 이르되
[20] 일어나 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 가라 아기의 목숨을 찾던 자들이 죽었느니라 하시니
[21] 요셉이 일어나 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 들어가니라
