[ Psalms 91:9 - 91:16 ] - hymn 405
I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. — Psalm 4:8
When I was a child, my family lived in a house my father built in the cedar breaks west of Duncanville, Texas. Our house had a small kitchen-dinette area, two bedrooms, and a great room with a large stone fire-place in which we burned 2-footlong cedar logs. That fire-place was the center of warmth in our home.
There were five people in our family: my father and mother, my sister, my cousin, and me. Since we had only two bedrooms, I slept year-round on a porch with canvas screens that rolled down to the floor. Summers were delightful; winters were cold.
I remember dashing from the warmth of the living room onto the porch, tiptoeing across the frost-covered plank floor in my bare feet, leaping into bed and burrowing under a great mountain of blankets. Then, when hail, sleet, or snow lashed our house and the wind howled through the eaves like a pack of wolves, I snuggled down in sheltered rest. ¡°Snug as a bug in a rug,¡±my mother used to say. I doubt that any child ever felt so warm and secure.
Now I know the greatest security of all: God Himself. I can ¡°lie down in peace, and sleep¡±(Ps. 4:8), knowing that He is my shelter from the stinging storms of life. Enveloped in the warmth of His love, I¡¯m snug as a bug in a rug. — David Roper |

[ 시편 91:9 - 91:16 ] - 찬송가 405 장
내가 평안히 눕고 자기도 하리니 나를 안전히 살게 하시는 이는 오직 여호와이시니이다 — 시편 4:8
어린 시절 우리 가족은 텍사스주 던캔빌시의 서쪽 백향목 숲속에 아버지가 지은 집에서 살았습니다. 집에는 작은 부엌과 식탁이 있는 공간과 두 개의 침실, 그리고 큰 거실이 있었는데 거기에는 큰 벽난로가 있어서 두 자짜리 백향목 토막들을 태웠습니다. 이 벽난로는 우리 집에 열기를 공급해주는 곳이었습니다.
우리 식구는 아버지, 어머니, 누나, 사촌, 그리고 나까지 모두 다섯이었습니다. 침실이 둘밖에 없어서 나는 일 년 내내 덮개 커튼을 바닥까지 내려 방처럼 만든 베란다에서 잠을 잤는데, 여름에는 상쾌해서 좋았지만 겨울에는 추웠습니다.
나는 따뜻한 거실에 있다가 서리가 덮인 판자 바닥 위를 맨발로 발뒤꿈치를 들고 뛰어가서, 침대로 뛰어들어 산더미처럼 덮어놓은 담요 속으로 기어들어갔던 일이 지금도 생각납니다. 그 당시 우박이나 진눈깨비, 혹은 눈이 세차게 우리 집을 내리치고, 바람이 처마 밑으로 거세게 불어서 늑대 울음소리를 낼 때면, 나는 포근하고 안전한 이불 속으로 깊이 기어들어갔습니다. 그 모습을 보신 어머니는 나를 “양탄자에 숨은 벌레같이 포근하겠구나.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 나는 그때 나보다 더 따뜻하고 안전하게 느끼는 아이가 있을까 하고 생각했습니다.
이제 나는 가장 안전한 것이 무엇인지 압니다. 그것은 바로 하나님 그분입니다. 하나님이 삶의 험한 폭풍우를 막아주시는 나의 피난처이신 것을 알기에, 나는 “평안히 눕고 자기도”(시 4:8) 할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 따뜻한 사랑 안에 싸여 나는 양탄자에 숨은 벌레같이 포근합니다. |
