Chess is an ancient game of strategy. Each player begins with 16 pieces on the chessboard with the goal of cornering his opponent¡¯s king. It has taken different forms over the years. One form is human chess, which was introduced around AD 735 by Charles Martel, duke of Austrasia. Martel would play the game on giant boards with real people as the pieces. The human pieces were costumed to reflect their status on the board and moved at the whim of the players¦¡manipulating them to their own ends.
Could this human version of the game of Chess be one that we sometimes play? We can easily become so driven by our goals that people become just one more pawn that we use to achieve them. The scrip-tures, however, call us to a different view of those around us. We are to see people as created in the image of God (Gen.1:26). They are objects of God¡¯s love (John 3:16) and deserving of ours as well.
The apostle John wrote, ¡°Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God¡±(1 John 4:7). Because God first loved us, we are to respond by loving Him and the people He created in His image. — Bill Crowder

체스(서양장기)는 고대로부터 내려오는 전략게임입니다. 각자가 16개의 말을 가지고 시작하여 상대방의 왕을 잡는 게임입니다. 그런데 오랜 세월을 거치는 동안 다른 방식들이 만들어졌습니다. 그 중 하나가 주후 735년쯤에 오스트리아 공작 찰스 마텔이 고안해낸 인간 장기입니다. 그는 커다란 장기판에 진짜 사람을 장기의 말처럼 사용했습니다. 사람들은 장기판 위에 각자의 신분을 나타내는 의상을 입고 장기를 두는 사람이 시키는 대로 움직였습니다. 장기 두는 사람들의 목적에 따라 그들을 조종한 것입니다.
이런 인간 장기를 우리도 가끔씩 두고 있지는 않는지요? 우리는 목표를 이루려는 욕심에 너무 쉽게 이끌려, 목표를 달성하기 위해 사람들을 마치 장기판의 졸처럼 다루곤 합니다. 그러나 성경은 우리 주위의 사람들을 다른 각도에서 바라볼 것을 요구합니다. 우리는 사람을 하나님의 형상대로 지으심을 받은 존재로 보아야 합니다(창 1:26). 그들은 하나님의 사랑의 대상이기에(요 3:16), 우리로부터도 사랑을 받아야 마땅합니다.
요한사도는 “사랑하는 자들아 우리가 서로 사랑하자 사랑은 하나님께 속한 것이니 사랑하는 자마다 하나님으로부터 나서 하나님을 알고”(요일 4:7)라고 기록하였습니다. 하나님이 우리를 먼저 사랑하셨기에, 우리도 하나님을 사랑하고 하나님의 형상대로 지으심을 입은 사람들을 사랑해야 합니다.

Help me to see them as You do above;
Give me the wisdom and strength to take action,
So others may see the depth of Your love. — Kurt DeHaan
People are to be loved, not used.
1 John 4:7-12
[7] Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
[8] He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
[9] In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.
[10] In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
[11] Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
[12] No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.
주님, 주위 사람들을 향하여 내 눈을 열어주소서
주님께서 보시는 것처럼 볼 수 있게 도와주소서
다른 사람들이 주님의 깊은 사랑을 알 수 있도록
지혜와 행동으로 옮길 수 있는 능력을 주시옵소서
사람은 사랑의 대상이지 이용의 대상이 아니다.
