[ Genesis 16:1 - 16:6 ] - hymn 290 My wrong be upon you! ... The LORD judge between you and me. — Genesis 16:5 When Jenny¡¯s husband left her for another woman, she vowed that she would never meet his new wife. But when she realized that her bitterness was damaging her children¡¯s relationship with their father, she asked for God¡¯s help to take the first steps toward overcoming bitterness in a situation she couldn¡¯t change. In Genesis 16, we read the story of a couple to whom God promised a baby. When Sarai suggested that her husband Abram have a child with their servant Hagar, she wasn¡¯t fully trusting God for the child He had promised. When the baby was born, Hagar despised Sarai (Gen. 16:3-4), and Sarai became bitter (vv.5-6). Hagar had been the slave with no rights and suddenly she was special. How did Sarai react? By blaming others, including Abram (v.5). God¡¯s promise was realized in the birth of Isaac 14 years later. Even his weaning celebration was spoiled by Sarai¡¯s attitude (21:8-10). It may never have been easy for Sarai to have lived with the consequences of their decision to go ahead of God. It may have taken a miracle of grace to change her attitude but that could have transformed everything. Sarai couldn¡¯t reverse the decision, but through God¡¯s strength, she could have lived with it differently, and given God the glory. —Marion Stroud		[ 창세기 16:1 - 16:6 ] - 찬송가 290 장 내가 받는 모욕은 당신이 받아야 옳도다…당신과 나 사이에 여호와께서 판단하시기를 원하노라 — 창세기 16:5 제니의 남편이 다른 여자 때문에 그녀를 떠났을 때, 그녀는 전 남편의 새 아내를 결코 만나지 않겠다고 맹세했습니다. 그러나 그녀의 비통함이 자녀들과 아버지와의 관계를 손상시킨다는 사실을 알게 되자, 제니는 이미 돌이킬 수 없는 상황으로 인한 고통을 극복하기 위해 첫 걸음을 내디딜 수 있게 해달라고 하나님께 도움을 구했습니다. 창세기 16장에는 하나님께서 자녀를 주시기로 약속한 부부의 이야기가 나옵니다. 사래가 남편 아브람에게 여종 하갈과 동침하여 아이를 가지라고 제안했을 때에, 그녀는 자녀를 주시기로 약속한 하나님을 온전히 신뢰하고 있지 않았습니다. 아기가 태어나자, 하갈은 사래를 멸시하였고(창 16:3-4) 사래는 원한을 품게 되었습니다(5-6절). 하갈은 아무런 권리도 없던 여종이었는데, 갑자기 특별한 존재가 되었습니다. 이에 대해 사래는 어떻게 반응했습니까? 아브람을 포함한 다른 사람들을 탓하고 비난하였습니다(5절). 하나님의 약속은 14년 후 이삭의 출생으로 성취됩니다. 그러나 사래의 이런 태도로 인해 이삭의 젖 떼는 날 잔치까지도 망치게 됩니다(21:8-10). 하나님의 약속을 끝까지 기다리지 않고 하나님보다 앞서 그들이 내린 결정의 결과를 안고 살아야 했던 삶이 사래에게 결코 쉽지는 않았을 것입니다. 사래의 태도를 변화시키는 데에는 기적과도 같은 은혜가 필요했을 것 같고, 만일 그렇게 됐다면 모든 상황이 달라졌었을 것입니다. 사래는 그 결정을 번복할 수는 없었지만, 하나님이 주시는 힘으로 그 잘못을 극복하며 다르게 살며 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있었을 것입니다.

Thank You, Lord, that though our situations
may not change, Your grace is strong enough
to change us in our situations. Help us as we
struggle sometimes to live in this sinful world.

By God¡¯s grace, we can reflect His light
in the dark times.

Genesis 16:1-6; 21:8-13

[1] Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.
[2] So Sarai said to Abram, "See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her." And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.
[3] Then Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.
[4] So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes.
[5] Then Sarai said to Abram, "My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. The LORD judge between you and me."
[6] So Abram said to Sarai, "Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please." And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her presence.

[21:8] So the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the same day that Isaac was weaned.
[9] And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing.
[10] Therefore she said to Abraham, "Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac."
[11] And the matter was very displeasing in Abraham's sight because of his son.
[12] But God said to Abraham, "Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called.
[13] "Yet I will also make a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your seed."

주님, 감사합니다.
우리의 상황은 바뀌지 않을 수도 있지만, 주님의 은혜는
그 상황 안에 있는 우리를 변화시키고도 남을 만큼 강합니다.
이 죄 많은 세상에서 애쓰며 살 때 우리를 도와주소서.

하나님의 은혜로 우리는 이 어두운 세대에서
하나님의 빛을 반사할 수 있다.

[1] 아브람의 아내 사래는 출산하지 못하였고 그에게 한 여종이 있으니 애굽 사람이요 이름은 하갈이라
[2] 사래가 아브람에게 이르되 여호와께서 내 출산을 허락하지 아니하셨으니 원하건대 내 여종에게 들어가라 내가 혹 그로 말미암아 자녀를 얻을까 하노라 하매 아브람이 사래의 말을 들으니라
[3] 아브람의 아내 사래가 그 여종 애굽 사람 하갈을 데려다가 그 남편 아브람에게 첩으로 준 때는 아브람이 가나안 땅에 거주한 지 십 년 후였더라
[4] 아브람이 하갈과 동침하였더니 하갈이 임신하매 그가 자기의 임신함을 알고 그의 여주인을 멸시한지라
[5] 사래가 아브람에게 이르되 내가 받는 모욕은 당신이 받아야 옳도다 내가 나의 여종을 당신의 품에 두었거늘 그가 자기의 임신함을 알고 나를 멸시하니 당신과 나 사이에 여호와께서 판단하시기를 원하노라
[6] 아브람이 사래에게 이르되 당신의 여종은 당신의 수중에 있으니 당신의 눈에 좋을 대로 그에게 행하라 하매 사래가 하갈을 학대하였더니 하갈이 사래 앞에서 도망하였더라

[21:8] 아이가 자라매 젖을 떼고 이삭이 젖을 떼는 날에 아브라함이 큰 잔치를 베풀었더라
[9] 사라가 본즉 아브라함의 아들 애굽 여인 하갈의 아들이 이삭을 놀리는지라
[10] 그가 아브라함에게 이르되 이 여종과 그 아들을 내쫓으라 이 종의 아들은 내 아들 이삭과 함께 기업을 얻지 못하리라 하므로
[11] 아브라함이 그의 아들로 말미암아 그 일이 매우 근심이 되었더니
[12] 하나님이 아브라함에게 이르시되 네 아이나 네 여종으로 말미암아 근심하지 말고 사라가 네게 이른 말을 다 들으라 이삭에게서 나는 자라야 네 씨라 부를 것임이니라
[13] 그러나 여종의 아들도 네 씨니 내가 그로 한 민족을 이루게 하리라 하신지라
