The Tragic Flaw		비극적 결함
[ 2 Chronicles 26:3 - 26:15 ] - hymn 423 His fame spread far and wide, for he was marvelously helped till he became strong. — 2 Chronicles 26:15 In literature, a tragic flaw is a character trait that causes the downfall of a story¡¯s hero. That was true of Uzziah, who was crowned king of Judah at age 16. For many years, he sought the Lord; and while he did, God gave him great success (2 Chron. 26:4-5). But things changed when ¡°his fame spread far and wide, for he was marvelously helped till he became strong. But when he was strong his heart was lifted up, to his destruction¡± (vv.15-16). Uzziah entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar (v.16), openly defying God¡¯s decree. Perhaps pride convinced him that God¡¯s rules applied to everyone except him. When Uzziah raged against the priests who told him this was not right, the Lord struck him with leprosy (vv.18-20). In literature and in life, how often we see a person of good reputation fall from honor into disgrace and suffering. ¡°King Uzziah was a leper until the day of his death. He dwelt in an isolated house, ... cut off from the house of the Lord¡±(v.21). The only way we can prevent the nectar of praise from becoming the poison of pride is by following the Lord with a humble heart. 2 Chronicles 26:3-15

[3] Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years. His mother's name was Jecoliah; she was from Jerusalem.
[4] He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Amaziah had done.
[5] He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success.
[6] He went to war against the Philistines and broke down the walls of Gath, Jabneh and Ashdod. He then rebuilt towns near Ashdod and elsewhere among the Philistines.
[7] God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabs who lived in Gur Baal and against the Meunites.
[8] The Ammonites brought tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, because he had become very powerful.
[9] Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, at the Valley Gate and at the angle of the wall, and he fortified them.
[10] He also built towers in the desert and dug many cisterns, because he had much livestock in the foothills and in the plain. He had people working his fields and vineyards in the hills and in the fertile lands, for he loved the soil.
[11] Uzziah had a well-trained army, ready to go out by divisions according to their numbers as mustered by Jeiel the secretary and Maaseiah the officer under the direction of Hananiah, one of the royal officials.
[12] The total number of family leaders over the fighting men was 2,600.
[13] Under their command was an army of 307,500 men trained for war, a powerful force to support the king against his enemies.
[14] Uzziah provided shields, spears, helmets, coats of armor, bows and slingstones for the entire army.
[15] In Jerusalem he made machines designed by skillful men for use on the towers and on the corner defenses to shoot arrows and hurl large stones. His fame spread far and wide, for he was greatly helped until he became powerful.

[3] 웃시야가 왕위에 오를 때에 나이가 십육 세라 예루살렘에서 오십이 년 간 다스리니라 그의 어머니의 이름은 여골리아요 예루살렘 사람이더라
[4] 웃시야가 그의 아버지 아마샤의 모든 행위대로 여호와 보시기에 정직하게 행하며
[5] 하나님의 묵시를 밝히 아는 스가랴가 사는 날에 하나님을 찾았고 그가 여호와를 찾을 동안에는 하나님이 형통하게 하셨더라
[6] 웃시야가 나가서 블레셋 사람들과 싸우고 가드 성벽과 야브네 성벽과 아스돗 성벽을 헐고 아스돗 땅과 블레셋 사람들 가운데에 성읍들을 건축하매
[7] 하나님이 그를 도우사 블레셋 사람들과 구르바알에 거주하는 아라비아 사람들과 마온 사람들을 치게 하신지라
[8] 암몬 사람들이 웃시야에게 조공을 바치매 웃시야가 매우 강성하여 이름이 애굽 변방까지 퍼졌더라
[9] 웃시야가 예루살렘에서 성 모퉁이 문과 골짜기 문과 성굽이에 망대를 세워 견고하게 하고
[10] 또 광야에 망대를 세우고 물 웅덩이를 많이 파고 고원과 평지에 가축을 많이 길렀으며 또 여러 산과 좋은 밭에 농부와 포도원을 다스리는 자들을 두었으니 농사를 좋아함이었더라
[11] 웃시야에게 또 싸우는 군사가 있으니 서기관 여이엘과 병영장 마아세야가 직접 조사한 수효대로 왕의 지휘관 하나냐의 휘하에 속하여 떼를 지어 나가서 싸우는 자라
[12] 족장의 총수가 이천육백 명이니 모두 큰 용사요
[13] 그의 휘하의 군대가 삼십만 칠천오백 명이라 건장하고 싸움에 능하여 왕을 도와 적을 치는 자이며
[14] 웃시야가 그의 온 군대를 위하여 방패와 창과 투구와 갑옷과 활과 물매 돌을 준비하고
[15] 또 예루살렘에서 재주 있는 사람들에게 무기를 고안하게 하여 망대와 성곽 위에 두어 화살과 큰 돌을 쏘고 던지게 하였으니 그의 이름이 멀리 퍼짐은 기이한 도우심을 얻어 강성하여짐이었더라
