THE SLIPPERY SLOPE OF SUCCESS		성공의 미끄러운 내리막길
[ 1 Samuel 15:10 - 15:23 ] - hymn 424 When you were little in your own eyes, ... did not the LORD anoint you king over Israel? - 1 Samuel 15:17 Among the more than 19,000 origi-nal epigrams penned by chemist and writer Dr. O. A. Battista is this wise observation: "You have reached the pinnacle of success as soon as you become uninterested in money, com-pliments, or publicity." Unfortunately, just the opposite often happens when something we have done is praised and rewarded. A humble heart can quickly become a swelled head. Just before Saul was anointed king, he saw himself as a member of an insignificant family in the smallest tribe of Israel (1 Sam. 9:21). Within a few years, however, he had erected a monument in his own honor and had become the supreme authority for his conduct (15:11-12). The prophet Samuel confronted Saul for his disobedience to God by reminding him, "When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel?"(v.17). Self-importance is the first step down the slippery slope of what we call success. It begins when we claim credit for God-given victories and modify His commands to suit our desires. True success is staying on God's path by following His Word and giving Him praise instead of craving it for our-selves. - David McCasland		[ 사무엘상 15:10 - 15:23 ] - 찬송가 424 장 왕이 스스로 작게 여길 그때에...여호와께서 왕에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘 왕을 삼으시고 - 사무엘상 15:17 화학자이자 작가인 바티스타 박사가 쓴 19,000개가 넘는 경구 가운데 “돈, 찬사, 명성에 대한 관심을 잃으면, 그 즉시 당신은 성공의 절정에 이르게 된다.”라는 지혜로운 내용이 있습니다. 우리가 행한 것들로 찬사나 상을 받게 될 때, 불행하게도 정반대의 경우가 종종 일어납니다. 겸손했던 마음이 순식간에 자만으로 돌변하곤 합니다. 사울이 왕으로 기름부음 받기 바로 전에는, 그 스스로 이스라엘의 가장 작은 지파의 가장 미약한 가족의 한 사람으로 여기고 있었습니다(삼상 9:21). 그러나 몇 년이 지나지 않아 그는 자기의 명예를 위하여 기념비를 세우고, 지도자로서 최고의 권력을 행사하였습니다(15:11-12). 사무엘 선지자는 사울에게 “왕이 스스로 작게 여길 그 때에 이스라엘 지파의 머리가 되지 아니하셨나이까 여호와께서 왕에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘 왕을 삼으셨나이다”(17절)라고 상기시키며, 하나님께 불순종한 사울에 맞섰습니다. 스스로 거만해지는 것은 우리가 성공이라 부르는 것으로부터 미끄러운 내리막길로 치닫는 첫걸음입니다. 그것은 하나님이 주신 승리를 우리의 공로로 주장하고, 주님의 명령을 우리들의 욕망에 맞게 수정할 때 시작됩니다. 진정한 성공이란 우리가 갈망하는 것을 얻는 것이 아니라, 주님의 말씀을 좇고 주님을 찬양하며 하나님의 길 안에 머무는 것입니다.

1 Samuel 15:10-23

[10] Now the word of the LORD came to Samuel, saying,
[11] "I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments." And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the LORD all night.
[12] So when Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, it was told Samuel, saying, "Saul went to Carmel, and indeed, he set up a monument for himself; and he has gone on around, passed by, and gone down to Gilgal."
[13] Then Samuel went to Saul, and Saul said to him, "Blessed are you of the LORD! I have performed the commandment of the LORD."
[14] But Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?"
[15] And Saul said, "They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen, to sacrifice to the LORD your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed."
[16] Then Samuel said to Saul, "Be quiet! And I will tell you what the LORD said to me last night." And he said to him, "Speak on."
[17] So Samuel said, "When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the LORD anoint you king over Israel?
[18] "Now the LORD sent you on a mission, and said, 'Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.'
[19] "Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you swoop down on the spoil, and do evil in the sight of the LORD?"
[20] And Saul said to Samuel, "But I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
[21] "But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal."
[22] Then Samuel said£º "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.
[23] For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king."

오 주여, 나의 모든 재능은 당신이 주신 것이니
내 마음이 교만하지 않도록 나를 도와주소서
내 인생에서 얼마나 큰 자비와 은총을 주님이 보여주셨는지요!
내게 있는 어떤 것도 내 것이라고 우길 수 없습니다

모든 성공을 하나님의 공로로 여기는 것이 진정한 겸손이다.

사무엘상 15:10-23

[10] 여호와의 말씀이 사무엘에게 임하니라 가라사대
[11] 내가 사울을 세워 왕 삼은 것을 후회하노니 그가 돌이켜서 나를 좇지 아니하며 내 명령을 이루지 아니하였음이니라 하신지라 사무엘이 근심하여 온 밤을 여호와께 부르짖으니라
[12] 사무엘이 사울을 만나려고 아침에 일찍이 일어났더니 혹이 사무엘에게 고하여 가로되 사울이 갈멜에 이르러 자기를 위하여 기념비를 세우고 돌이켜 행하여 길갈로 내려 갔다 하는지라
[13] 사무엘이 사울에게 이른즉 사울이 그에게 이르되 원컨대 당신은 여호와께 복을 받으소서 내가 여호와의 명령을 행하였나이다
[14] 사무엘이 가로되 그러면 내 귀에 들어오는 이 양의 소리와 내게 들리는 소의 소리는 어찜이니이까
[15] 사울이 가로되 그것은 무리가 아말렉 사람에게서 끌어 온 것인데 백성이 당신의 하나님 여호와께 제사하려 하여 양과 소의 가장 좋은 것을 남김이요 그 외의 것은 우리가 진멸하였나이다
[16] 사무엘이 사울에게 이르되 가만히 계시옵소서 간 밤에 여호와께서 내게 이르신 것을 왕에게 말하리이다 가로되 말씀하소서
[17] 사무엘이 가로되 왕이 스스로 작게 여길 그 때에 이스라엘 지파의 머리가 되지 아니하셨나이까 여호와께서 왕에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘 왕을 삼으시고
[18] 또 왕을 길로 보내시며 이르시기를 가서 죄인 아말렉 사람을 진멸하되 다 없어지기까지 치라 하셨거늘
[19] 어찌하여 왕이 여호와의 목소리를 청종치 아니하고 탈취하기에만 급하여 여호와의 악하게 여기시는 것을 행하였나이까
[20] 사울이 사무엘에게 이르되 나는 실로 여호와의 목소리를 청종하여 여호와께서 보내신 길로 가서 아말렉 왕 아각을 끌어왔고 아말렉 사람을 진멸하였으나
[21] 다만 백성이 그 마땅히 멸할 것 중에서 가장 좋은 것으로 길갈에서 당신의 하나님 여호와께 제사하려고 양과 소를 취하였나이다
[22] 사무엘이 가로되 여호와께서 번제와 다른 제사를 그 목소리 순종하는 것을 좋아하심 같이 좋아하시겠나이까 순종이 제사보다 낫고 듣는 것이 수양의 기름보다 나으니
[23] 이는 거역하는 것은 사술의 죄와 같고 완고한 것은 사신 우상에게 절하는 죄와 같음이라 왕이 여호와의 말씀을 버렸으므로 여호와께서도 왕을 버려 왕이 되지 못하게 하셨나이다
