Let Honor Meet Honor		경의를 표하라
[ Matthew 6:1 - 6:6 ] - hymn 350 Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. — Matthew 6:1 I¡¯ve always been impressed by the solemn, magnificent simplicity of the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The carefully choreographed event is a moving tribute to soldiers whose names—and sacrifice—are ¡°known but to God.¡± Equally moving are the private moments of steady pacing when the crowds are gone: back and forth, hour after hour, day by day, in even the worst weather. In September 2003, Hurricane Isabel was bearing down on Washington, DC, and the guards were told they could seek shelter during the worst of the storm. Surprising almost no one, the guards refused! They unselfishly stood their post to honor their fallen comrades even in the face of a hurricane. Underlying Jesus¡¯ teaching in Matthew 6:1-6, I believe, is His desire for us to live with an unrelenting, selfless devotion to Him. The Bible calls us to good deeds and holy living, but these are to be acts of worship and obedience (vv.4-6), not orchestrated acts for self-glorification (v.2). The apostle Paul endorses this whole-life faithfulness when he pleads with us to make our bodies ¡°a living sacrifice¡± (Rom. 12:1). May our private and public moments speak of our devotion and wholehearted commitment to You, Lord.		[ 마태복음 6:1 - 6:6 ] - 찬송가 350 장 사람에게 보이려고 그들 앞에서 너희 의를 행치 않도록 주의하라 그렇지 아니하면 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 상을 얻지 못하느니라－마태복음 6:1 나는 알링턴 국립묘지의 무명용사의 묘지에서 거행되는 엄숙하고 장엄하면서도 소박한 보초병 교대식을 볼 때면 언제나 감동을 받습니다. 그렇게 세심하게 연출된 교대식은 이름이나 희생이 “오직 하나님에게만 알려진” 군인들에게 바치는 감동적인 경의의 표시입니다. 사람들이 떠나고 난 뒤에도, 궂은 날씨에도 개의치 않고, 한결같은 동작으로 날마다 시간마다 쉬지 않고 왔다 갔다 하며 보초를 서는 장면은 동일한 감동을 줍니다. 2003년 9월 태풍 이사벨이 워싱턴 시를 휩쓸고 지나갈 때, 국립묘지의 보초병들은 폭풍이 심할 경우 대피해도 된다고 전달받았습니다. 그러나 예상한대로 보초병들은 대피하기를 거절하였습니다! 그들은 태풍에도 불구하고 자신을 생각지 않고 전사한 전우들에게 경의를 표하기 위해 그 자리를 지켰습니다. 예수님께서 마태복음 6:1-6의 가르침을 통해 우리에게 원하신 것은 우리가 엄격하고 사심 없이 주님께 헌신하면서 사는 것이라고 나는 믿습니다. 성경은 우리에게 선한 일을 하고 거룩하게 살라고 말합니다. 그러나 예배와 순종으로 행하여야 하며(4-6절), 자기 영광을 위해 보여주는 행동이어서는 안 됩니다(2절). 바울사도가 우리 몸을 “산 제물”(롬 12:1)로 드리라고 간청하는 것을 보면 이런 온 생애를 통한 신실함에 그도 동의하는 것입니다. 주여, 혼자 있을 때든 사람들 앞에 있을 때든 당신을 향한 우리의 기도와 신실한 약속을 증거하게 하소서.

Grant me the strength this day, O Lord, to persevere,
to return honor to Your name where I am serving.
My desire is to give myself in selfless devotion
because of Your love for me. Amen.

The more we serve Christ, the less we will serve self.

Matthew 6:1-6

[1] "Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
[2] "Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
[3] "But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
[4] "that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.
[5] "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
[6] "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

오, 주여. 오늘도 섬기는 자리에서
인내하고 당신의 이름에 영광 돌리도록 힘을 주소서
저를 향한 당신의 사랑으로 인하여
제 자신을 드리며 헌신하기를 원합니다. 아멘.

그리스도를 더 섬길수록 자신을 덜 섬기게 된다.

[1] 사람에게 보이려고 그들 앞에서 너희 의를 행하지 않도록 주의하라 그리하지 아니하면 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 상을 받지 못하느니라
[2] 그러므로 구제할 때에 외식하는 자가 사람에게서 영광을 받으려고 회당과 거리에서 하는 것 같이 너희 앞에 나팔을 불지 말라 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 그들은 자기 상을 이미 받았느니라
[3] 너는 구제할 때에 오른손이 하는 것을 왼손이 모르게 하여
[4] 네 구제함을 은밀하게 하라 은밀한 중에 보시는 너의 아버지께서 갚으시리라
[5] 또 너희는 기도할 때에 외식하는 자와 같이 하지 말라 그들은 사람에게 보이려고 회당과 큰 거리 어귀에 서서 기도하기를 좋아하느니라 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 그들은 자기 상을 이미 받았느니라
[6] 너는 기도할 때에 네 골방에 들어가 문을 닫고 은밀한 중에 계신 네 아버지께 기도하라 은밀한 중에 보시는 네 아버지께서 갚으시리라
