[ Acts 17:22 - 17:31 ] - hymn 273 You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God. — 1 Thessalonians 1:9 The miracles that God worked through Moses challenged the many gods of Pharaoh. Yet, in another time, there was a Pharaoh who promoted the belief in one deity. Pharaoh Akhenaten pointed to the rising and setting sun as the great deity who gave life to the earth. His religious symbol for Aton, the sun god, was represented by a single disc of light with emanating rays. Though this Pharaoh¡¯s idea came closer to the one God of the Bible, it was still idolatry. When Paul addressed the people in Athens, he was grieved by the idolatry in that city. Yet he used the people¡¯s imperfect understanding of God to point them to the God of Scripture. Of their efforts in trying to find God, Paul said: ¡°God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands¡± (Acts 17:24). In our increasingly pluralistic world, the people around us may worship a multiplicity of deities. Yet their spiritual journey need not end there. We never know when someone might be moving toward the kingdom of God. Following the example of Paul, we should respect a person¡¯s religious background, watch for spiritual receptivity, and then point him or her to the one true God of Scripture.		[ 사도행전 17:22 - 17:31 ] - 찬송가 273 장 너희가 어떻게 우상을 버리고 하나님께로 돌아와서 사시고 참되신 하나님을 섬기며－데살로니가전서 1:9 모세를 통해 하나님께서 행하신 기적으로 바로의 여러 신들이 도전을 받았습니다. 하지만 하나의 신만 믿을 것을 장려하는 바로가 있던 시기도 있었습니다. 아크나텐이라는 바로는 뜨고 지는 태양을 가리켜 땅에 생명을 주는 위대한 신이라고 하였습니다. 그의 태양신 아톤의 종교적 상징은 섬광이 발산되는 원반모양의 빛으로 표현되었습니다. 바로의 이런 아이디어는 오직 한 분이신 성경의 하나님과 흡사했지만, 역시 우상에 불과했습니다. 바울은 아테네 사람들에게 설교할 때 그 도시의 우상숭배를 보고 슬퍼했습니다. 그러나 그는 사람들이 하나님을 제대로 알지 못하는 점을 이용하여 그들을 성경의 하나님께로 인도했습니다. 그들이 하나님을 찾으려고 노력하는 것에 대해서 바울은 “우주와 그 가운데 있는 만유를 지으신 신께서는 천지의 주재시니 손으로 지은 전에 계시지 아니하시다”(행 17:24)라고 말했습니다. 세상이 점점 다원론적으로 되어가면서 우리 주위의 사람들도 다양한 신들에게 예배할 수 있습니다. 하지만 그들의 영적 여행을 거기서 끝나게 하면 안 됩니다. 우리는 어떤 사람이 언제 하나님 나라로 인도될지 전혀 알지 못합니다. 우리도 바울을 본받아서 어떤 사람의 종교적 배경을 존중해 주고, 영적 감수성을 주의 깊게 살피면서, 그를 참되신 성경의 하나님께로 인도해야 합니다.

A Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to lead the lost away from all that is false. And to lead them to You—the one and only God— who alone offers true life. Amen.

God alone is worthy of our worship.

Acts 17:22-31

[22] Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious;
[23] "for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription£º TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you£º
[24] "God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.
[25] "Nor is He worshiped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.
[26] "And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,
[27] "so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;
[28] "for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also His offspring.'
[29] "Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man's devising.
[30] "Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,
[31] "because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead."

기도: 사랑하는 주님, 우리를 도우셔서
길 잃은 자들이 헛된 것에서 벗어날 수 있게 하소서
홀로 참 생명을 주시는 유일하신 하나님,
주님께 그들을 인도할 수 있게 도와주소서. 아멘

하나님만이 우리의 예배를 받으시기에 합당한 분이시다.

사도행전 17:22-31

[22] 바울이 아레오바고 가운데 서서 말하되 아덴 사람들아 너희를 보니 범사에 종교심이 많도다
[23] 내가 두루 다니며 너희가 위하는 것들을 보다가 알지 못하는 신에게라고 새긴 단도 보았으니 그런즉 너희가 알지 못하고 위하는 그것을 내가 너희에게 알게 하리라
[24] 우주와 그 가운데 있는 만물을 지으신 하나님께서는 천지의 주재시니 손으로 지은 전에 계시지 아니하시고
[25] 또 무엇이 부족한 것처럼 사람의 손으로 섬김을 받으시는 것이 아니니 이는 만민에게 생명과 호흡과 만물을 친히 주시는 이심이라
[26] 인류의 모든 족속을 한 혈통으로 만드사 온 땅에 살게 하시고 그들의 연대를 정하시며 거주의 경계를 한정하셨으니
[27] 이는 사람으로 혹 하나님을 더듬어 찾아 발견하게 하려 하심이로되 그는 우리 각 사람에게서 멀리 계시지 아니하도다
[28] 우리가 그를 힘입어 살며 기동하며 존재하느니라 너희 시인 중 어떤 사람들의 말과 같이 우리가 그의 소생이라 하니
[29] 이와 같이 하나님의 소생이 되었은즉 하나님을 금이나 은이나 돌에다 사람의 기술과 고안으로 새긴 것들과 같이 여길 것이 아니니라
[30] 알지 못하던 시대에는 하나님이 간과하셨거니와 이제는 어디든지 사람에게 다 명하사 회개하라 하셨으니
[31] 이는 정하신 사람으로 하여금 천하를 공의로 심판할 날을 작정하시고 이에 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리신 것으로 모든 사람에게 믿을 만한 증거를 주셨음이니라 하니라
