[ Matthew 23:1 - 23:13 ] - hymn 507 Whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. - Matthew 23:3 A woman in Oregon was caught driving 103 miles per hour with her 10-year-old grandson in the car. When she was stopped by the police, she told them that she was only trying to teach him never to drive that fast. I suppose she wanted him to do as she said, not as she did. The Pharisees and teachers of the law seemed to have a similar problem. Jesus had a scathing assessment of them: They were spiritually bankrupt. He held these two groups directly responsible for this sad spiritual condition. As the successors of the lawgiver Moses, they were responsible for expounding the law so that people would walk in God¡¯s ways and have a genuine and vibrant relationship with the Lord (Deut. 10:12-13). But their personal interpretation and application of the law became more important than God¡¯s law. They did not practice what they preached. What they did observe was done not to bring glory to God but to honor themselves. Jesus exposed who they were—image managers, posers, and hypocrites. The test of the effectiveness of following Jesus is not just in what we say but in how we live. Are we telling others God¡¯s Word and doing what it says? Matthew 23:1-13

[1] Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples,
[2] saying£º "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
[3] "Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.
[4] "For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
[5] "But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments.
[6] "They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,
[7] "greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi, Rabbi.'
[8] "But you, do not be called 'Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren.
[9] "Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
[10] "And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.
[11] "But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.
[12] "And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
[13] "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

[6] 잔치의 윗자리와 회당의 높은 자리와
[7] 시장에서 문안 받는 것과 사람에게 랍비라 칭함을 받는 것을 좋아하느니라
[8] 그러나 너희는 랍비라 칭함을 받지 말라 너희 선생은 하나요 너희는 다 형제니라
[9] 땅에 있는 자를 아버지라 하지 말라 너희의 아버지는 한 분이시니 곧 하늘에 계신 이시니라
[10] 또한 지도자라 칭함을 받지 말라 너희의 지도자는 한 분이시니 곧 그리스도시니라
[11] 너희 중에 큰 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되어야 하리라
[12] 누구든지 자기를 높이는 자는 낮아지고 누구든지 자기를 낮추는 자는 높아지리라
[13] 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 너희는 천국 문을 사람들 앞에서 닫고 너희도 들어가지 않고 들어가려 하는 자도 들어가지 못하게 하는도다
