[ Matthew 23:1 - 23:15 ] - hymn 332 You ... have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. - Matthew 23:23 As I study the life of Jesus, one fact consistently surprises me: the group that made Jesus angriest was one that He outwardly resembled. Jesus obeyed the Mosaic Law and quoted leading Pharisees(Mark 9:11-12; 12:28-34). Yet He singled out the Pharisees for His strongest attacks. He called them serpents, a brood of vipers, fools, and hypocrites (Matt. 23:13-33). What provoked such outbursts? The Pharisees devoted their lives to following God, gave away an exact tithe(v.23), obeyed every law in the Torah, and sent out missionaries to gain new converts(v.15). Against the relativists and secularists of the first century, they held firm to traditional values. Yet Jesus¡¯ fierce denunciations of the Pharisees show how seriously He viewed the toxic threat of legalism. Its dangers are elusive, slippery, hard to pin down. I believe these dangers remain a great threat today. Jesus condemned the emphasis on externals: ¡°You cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence¡±(v.25). Expressions of love for God had become ways to impress others. The proof of spiritual maturity is not how ¡°pure¡± you are but your awareness of your impurity. That very awareness opens the door to God¡¯s grace. — Philip Yancey		[ 마태복음 23:1 - 23:15 ] - 찬송가 332 장 너희가...율법의 더 중한 바 의와 인과 신은 버렸도다－마태복음 23:23 예수님의 생애를 공부하면서 항상 놀랍게 생각되는 점은 예수님을 가장 노하게 했던 무리가 외관상으로는 예수님과 비슷했다는 것입니다. 예수님은 모세의 율법을 따랐으며, 바리새인 지도자들의 말을 인용하곤 하셨습니다(막 9:11-12; 12:28-34). 그럼에도 예수님은 바리새인들을 지목하여 가장 강하게 비난하셨습니다. 주님은 그들을 뱀, 독사의 새끼, 어리석은 자 그리고 위선자라고 불렀습니다(마 23:13-33). 무엇이 예수님을 이토록 분노하게 했을까요? 바리새인들은 하나님을 따르는 삶을 살며, 정확한 십일조를 내고(23절), 모세오경의 모든 법을 따르며, 새 교인들을 얻기 위해 전도자들을 파송하였습니다(15절). 바리새인들은 1세기의 상대주의자와 세속주의자들에 대항하며 전통적인 가치관을 확고히 지키고 있었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 예수님의 바리새인들을 향한 맹렬한 비난은 예수님이 율법주의의 해로움을 얼마나 심각하게 생각하셨는지를 보여줍니다. 율법주의의 위험성은 이해하기 어렵고, 파악하기 쉽지 않으며, 식별하기 힘듭니다. 나는 오늘날에도 이런 위험들이 우리를 크게 위협하고 있다고 믿습니다. 예수님은 “잔과 대접의 겉은 깨끗이 하되 그 안에는 탐욕과 방탕으로 가득하게 하는도다”(25절)라고 하시며 외양을 중시하는 것을 책망하셨습니다. 하나님을 향한 사랑을 표현하는 모습들이 다른 사람들을 감동시키는 수단이 되어버렸던 것입니다. 영적인 성숙함의 증거는 당신이 얼마나 “깨끗한가”가 아니라, 당신이 얼마나 깨끗하지 못한지를 제대로 인식하는 데에 있습니다. 바로 그 인식이 하나님의 은혜의 문을 열리게 합니다.

[5] "But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments.
[6] "They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,
[7] "greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi, Rabbi.'
[8] "But you, do not be called 'Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren.
[9] "Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
[10] "And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.
[11] "But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.
[12] "And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
[13] "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.
[14] "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
[15] "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
