[ Matthew 16:24 - 16:28 ] - hymn 505 What will a man give in exchange for his soul? — Matthew 16:26 One would think that selling one¡¯s soul, as Faust offered his to the devil in Goethe¡¯s Dr. Faustus, is only a figment of literary fiction. Medieval as it seems, however, several cases of soul-selling have occurred. Wired magazine reported that a 29-year-old university instructor succeeded in selling his immortal soul for $1,325. He said, ¡°In America, you can metaphorically and literally sell your soul and be rewarded for it.¡± One wonders how the purchaser intended to collect. We can¡¯t literally sell our soul, but we can lose our soul to gain something else. We need to ponder Jesus¡¯ question, ¡°What will a man give in exchange for his soul?¡± (Matt. 16:26). Our answers today would differ only in specifics from the responses of Jesus¡¯ day: the world, the flesh, and the devil. The lusts that captivate us and the thirst for unbridled pleasure, success, revenge, or material things have certainly taken on far more importance to many people than any considerations of eternity. Nothing on earth compares to the gifts of God¡¯s love and forgiveness. If the pleasures of this world are preventing you from trusting in Jesus Christ, please think again. It¡¯s not worth the cost of your eternal soul. — David C. Egner		[ 마태복음 16:24 - 16:28 ] - 찬송가 505 장 사람이 무엇을 주고 제 목숨을 바꾸겠느냐－마태복음 16:26 인간의 영혼을 파는 행위는 괴테의 ‘파우스트’에서 파우스트가 자신의 영혼을 악마에게 팔았던 것처럼 문학소설에나 나오는 꾸며낸 이야기라고 여겨질지도 모릅니다. 그러나 중세시대나 일어났을 법한 영혼을 파는 일이 몇 번 일어나기도 했습니다. 「와이어드」라는 잡지는 스물아홉 살 난 어느 대학 강사가 1,325달러에 자신의 영혼을 파는 데 성공했다는 기사를 실었습니다. 그 강사는 “미국에서는 상징적이든 현실적이든 당신의 영혼을 팔고 대가를 받을 수 있습니다.”라고 말했습니다. 산 사람이 어떤 방법으로 영혼을 가져갈지 궁금합니다. 우리는 자신의 영혼을 실제로 팔 수는 없지만, 다른 무엇을 얻기 위하여 영혼을 잃을 수는 있습니다. 예수께서 “사람이 자기 영혼을 무엇과 바꾸겠느냐”(마16:26)라고 물어보신 질문을 깊이 생각해 볼 필요가 있습니다. 오늘날에는 세상, 정욕, 마귀와 같은 것들이 그 대답이며, 예수님이 살아계셨던 시대의 상황과 대동소이할 것입니다. 영원을 생각하기 보다는 우리를 사로잡는 탐욕과 억제할 수 없는 쾌락, 성공, 복수 또는 물질을 향한 목마름이 많은 사람들에게 훨씬 더 중요해져버린 것이 확실합니다. 하나님의 사랑과 용서라는 선물은 지상의 무엇과도 견줄 수 없습니다. 만일 이 세상의 쾌락들이 당신이 예수 그리스도를 믿지 못하게 만든다면 다시 한 번 생각해보십시오. 그것은 당신의 영원한 영혼을 대신할 만한 가치가 없습니다.

We¡¯ve been redeemed, we¡¯re justified—

Jesus is the only fountain who can satisfy the thirsty soul.

Matthew 16:24-28

[24] Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
[25] "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
[26] "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
[27] "For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.
[28] "Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom."

기뻐하라 영혼아, 부채가 탕감되었도다
모든 우리의 죄를 위해 그리스도께서 죽임을 당하셨네
우리가 속죄 받고 의롭게 되었네
이 모두가 구세주가 죽으심으로 되었네

예수님만이 목마른 영혼을 채울 수 있는 유일한 샘물이다.

마태복음 16:24-28

[24] 이에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라
[25] 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라
[26] 사람이 만일 온 천하를 얻고도 제 목숨을 잃으면 무엇이 유익하리요 사람이 무엇을 주고 제 목숨과 바꾸겠느냐
[27] 인자가 아버지의 영광으로 그 천사들과 함께 오리니 그 때에 각 사람이 행한 대로 갚으리라
[28] 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 여기 서 있는 사람 중에 죽기 전에 인자가 그 왕권을 가지고 오는 것을 볼 자들도 있느니라
