[ Matthew 4:18 - 4:25 ] - hymn 487 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance. - Luke 5:32 The 16th-century Italian painter Caravaggio received scathing criticism in his day for depicting people of the Bible as common. His critics reflected a time when only members of royalty and aristocracy were considered appropriate subjects for the "immortality" of art. His commissioned canvas of St. Matthew and the Angel so offended church leaders that it had to be redone. They could not accept seeing Matthew with the physical features of an everyday laborer. According to one biographer, what the church fathers did not understand was that "Caravaggio, in elevating this humble figure, was copying Christ, who had Himself raised Matthew from the street." Caravaggio was right about the people of the Bible. Jesus Himself grew up in the home of a laborer. When His time came to go public, He was announced by a weather-worn man of the wilderness known as John the Baptizer. His disciples were fishermen and common people. Jesus lived, loved, and died for wealthy people too. But by befriending those who had been demon-possessed, lepers, fishermen, and even despised tax collectors, the teacher from Nazareth showed that no one is too poor, too sinful, or too insignificant to be His friend. - Mart De Haan		[ 마태복음 4:18 - 4:25 ] - 찬송가 487 장 내가 의인을 부르러 온 것이 아니요 죄인을 불러 회개시키러 왔노라 - 누가복음 5:32 16세기의 이탈리아 화가 카라바지오는 성경 속의 인물들을 평범하게 그렸다고 신랄한 비난을 받았습니다. 그에 대한 비난은 그 시대가 오직 왕족이나 귀족만이 "불멸"의 예술의 대상으로 여겨졌다는 것을 보여줍니다. 그가 위탁받은‘성 마태와 천사’라는 그림은 교회 지도자들을 너무도 화가 나게 하여 다시 그려야만 했습니다. 그들은 평범한 일꾼의 모습을 한 마태를 보는 것을 용납할 수 없었던 것입니다. 한 전기 작가에 의하면, 성직자들은 카라바지오가 천한 마태를 세워주기 위해서 길에서 마태를 부르셨던 예수님이 보통 사람들의 모습을 지녔음을 염두에 두었음을 이해하지 못했던 것입니다. 성경의 인물들에 대한 카라바지오의 관점은 옳았습니다. 예수님 자신도 노동자의 가정에서 자라났습니다. 예수님이 공생애를 시작하시게 되었을 때 광야에서 비바람에 시달린 세례 요한이 그 사실을 모두에게 예고하였습니다. 그리고 그의 제자들도 어부들이었고 보통 사람들이었습니다. 예수님은 부자들을 위해서도 사셨고 사랑하셨고 돌아가셨습니다. 하지만 나사렛에서 오신 그 선생님은 귀신들린 자, 문둥병자, 어부, 그리고 심지어는 멸시받는 세리들과 친구가 됨으로써, 너무 가난하거나, 아주 큰 죄인이거나, 아니면 아주 보잘 것 없는 사람까지도 주님과 친구가 될 수 있음을 보여주셨습니다.

Matthew 4:18-25

[18] And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
[19] And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
[20] And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
[21] And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
[22] And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
[23] And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
[24] And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
[25] And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

[19] 말씀하시되 나를 따라 오너라 내가 너희로 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라 하시니
[20] 저희가 곧 그물을 버려 두고 예수를 좇으니라
[21] 거기서 더 가시다가 다른 두 형제 곧 세베대의 아들 야고보와 그 형제 요한이 그 부친 세베대와 한가지로 배에서 그물 깁는 것을 보시고 부르시니
[22] 저희가 곧 배와 부친을 버려두고 예수를 좇으니라
[23] 예수께서 온 갈릴리에 두루 다니사 저희 회당에서 가르치시며 천국 복음을 전파하시며 백성 중에 모든 병과 모든 약한 것을 고치시니
[24] 그의 소문이 온 수리아에 퍼진지라 사람들이 모든 앓는 자 곧 각색병과 고통에 걸린 자 귀신 들린 자 간질하는 자 중풍병자들을 데려오니 저희를 고치시더라
[25] 갈릴리와 데가볼리와 예루살렘과 유대와 요단강 건너 편에서 허다한 무리가 좇으니라
