In the fifth Chronicle of Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Edmund, Lucy, and their spoiled cousin Eustace are summoned to help on a quest in the Eastern Sea. Along the way, Eustace is tempted by enchanted treasure and turned into a dragon. The desperate dragon accepts the help of the great lion Aslan, king of Narnia. But Eustace can only be freed by allowing Aslan's claws to painfully tear off the dragon's flesh. Grateful for his deliverance, Eustace chooses to become a better boy.

Receiving God's gift of salvation through Christ is a one-time event, but to become like Him often requires suffering and struggle. It involves putting off old sinful habits and replacing them with new godly ones. Paul wrote, "Put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt ... [and] put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness"(Eph.4:22-24).

What is troubling you today? God may be using the kind rebuke of a friend or a painful trial to prompt you to get rid of a sinful habit and to replace it with godly character(Rom.8:29; 1 Peter 4:1-2).

(no)'나니아 연대기' 제 5장 '새벽 출정호의 항해'에 보면 에드먼드, 루시 그리고 못된 사촌 유스테이스가 동쪽 바다 탐험을 돕도록 지시를 받습니다. 여정 도중 유스테이스는 요술보석의 유혹에 빠져 용으로 변합니다. 다급해진 용은 나니아의 왕인 위대한 사자 아슬란의 도움을 받아들입니다. 그런데 유스테이스가 풀려날 수 있는 유일한 방법은 고통스럽지만 아슬란의 발톱이 용의 살점을 찢도록 허락하는 것이었습니다. 아슬란의 구출에 감사하는 마음으로 유스테이스는 착한 소년이 되기로 마음먹습니다.

그리스도를 통하여 하나님의 구원을 선물로 받는 것은 한 번 일어나는 사건이지만, 주님을 닮아가는 일은 고통과 악전고투를 수반합니다. 죄로 가득한 과거의 습관들을 벗어버리고 경건한 습관들을 입어야 합니다. 바울은 "너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 좇는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고...하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라"(엡4:22-24)고 말했습니다.

당신은 지금 어떤 일로 고통을 받고 계시나요? 하나님은 당신이 죄짓는 버릇들을 버리고 경건한 성품으로 대체할 수 있도록 하기 위하여 친구의 친절한 비난이나 고통스런 시험을 사용하고 계신지도 모릅니다(롬8:29; 벧전4:1-2).

그리스도를 닮아가는 과정은 때로는 고통스럽지만 항상 그럴만한 가치가 있습니다.

To be like Jesus is our goal,
Though it doesn't happen fast;
We trust the Spirit as our Guide

The conversion of a soul is the miracle of a moment; the growth of a saint is the work of a lifetime.


Ephesians 4:17-24

[17] This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,
[18] having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;
[19] who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
[20] But you have not so learned Christ,
[21] if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:
[22] that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,
[23] and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
[24] and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

하루아침에 이루어지지 않는다 해도
예수님처럼 되는 것이 우리의 바라는 바이니
마침내 영광의 몸을 입는 그날까지
성령님을 우리의 인도자로 삼고 따르리

한 영혼의 회심은 한 순간의 기적이지만
성도로 성장하는 것은 평생의 과업이다.


에베소서 4:17-24

[17] 그러므로 내가 이것을 말하며 주 안에서 증거하노니 이제부터 너희는 이방인이 그 마음의 허망한 것으로 행함 같이 행하지 말라
[18] 그들의 총명이 어두워지고 그들 가운데 있는 무지함과 그들의 마음이 굳어짐으로 말미암아 하나님의 생명에서 떠나 있도다
[19] 그들이 감각 없는 자가 되어 자신을 방탕에 방임하여 모든 더러운 것을 욕심으로 행하되
[20] 오직 너희는 그리스도를 그같이 배우지 아니하였느니라
[21] 진리가 예수 안에 있는 것 같이 너희가 참으로 그에게서 듣고 또한 그 안에서 가르침을 받았을 진대
[22] 너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 따르는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고
[23] 오직 너희의 심령이 새롭게 되어
[24] 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라
