[ Matthew 18:23 - 18:35 ] - hymn 404 The master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. - Matthew 18:27 From childhood we are taught how to succeed in the world of ungrace. "You get what you pay for." "The early bird gets the worm." "No pain, no gain." I know these rules well because I live by them. I work for what I earn; I like to win; I insist on my rights. I want people to get what they deserve. But Jesus' parables about grace teach a radically different concept. In Matthew 18, no one could accumulate a debt as huge as the servant did(vv.23-24). This underscores the point: The debt is unforgivable. Nevertheless, the master let the servant off scot-free. The more I reflect on Jesus' parables proclaiming grace, the more tempted I am to apply the word atrocious to describe the mathematics of the gospel. I believe Jesus gave us these stories to call us to step completely outside our tit-for-tat world of ungrace and enter into God's realm of infinite grace. If I care to listen, I hear a loud whisper from the gospel that I did not get what I deserved. I deserved punishment and got forgiveness. I deserved wrath and got love. I deserved debtor's prison and got instead a clean credit history. I deserved stern lectures and crawl-on-your-knees repentance. '고통이 없으면 소득도 없다.' 나는 이런 규칙들을 지키며 살기에 이것들을 잘 압니다. 나는 벌기 위해 일하고, 이기기를 좋아하고, 내 권리를 주장합니다. 나는 사람들이 그들이 마땅히 받아야 할 것을 얻기를 바랍니다. 그러나 은혜에 관한 예수님의 비유는 전혀 다른 개념을 가르쳐줍니다. 마태복음 18장에는 그 어느 누구도 도저히 갚을 수 없을만큼 엄청나게 많은 빚을 진 한 종이 나옵니다(23-24절). 이는 그 빚이 용서받을 수 없는 빚이라는 것을 강조하고 있는 것입니다. 그럼에도 주인은 그 종의 빚을 완전히 탕감하여 줍니다. 은혜에 대해 분명히 보여주는 예수님의 비유를 묵상하면 할수록, 나는 더욱 더 복음의 셈법을 '형편없다'라는 단어로 표현하고 싶어집니다. 나는 이 이야기가 예수님이 우리에게 되갚음의 원리가 적용되는 은혜롭지 못한 세상에서 완전히 벗어나, 하나님의 끝없는 은혜의 울타리 안으로 들어오라고 부르시는 이야기라고 믿습니다. 주의 깊게 귀를 기울여보면 나는 내가 마땅히 받아야 할 것을 받은 것이 아니라는 복음의 확실한 속삭임을 듣습니다. 징계를 받았어야 마땅한데 나는 용서를 받았습니다. 저주를 받아야 했는데 사랑을 받았고, 빚진 자로서 옥에 갇혀야 했음에도 부채 기록이 깨끗이 정리되었습니다. 나는 혹독한 훈계를 받고 무릎 꿇고 빌며 회개해야 했는데도, 나를 위해 연회가 벌어졌습니다.

Our sin is great-God's grace is greater.

Matthew 18:23-35

[23] Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.
[24] And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.
[25] But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
[26] The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
[27] Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.
[28] But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
[29] And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
[30] And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.
[31] So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
[32] Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
[33] Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?
[34] And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.
[35] So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

그의 사랑은 다함이 없고, 그의 은혜는 측량할 길 없네
그의 능력은 한계가 없어 사람이 알지 못하네
예수님 안에 있는 한없는 풍성함으로
주님은 주시고, 주시고, 또 주시네

우리의 죄가 엄청나지만 하나님의 은혜는 그보다 더 엄청나다.

[23] 이러므로 천국은 그 종들과 회계하려 하던 어떤 임금과 같으니
[24] 회계할 때에 일만 달란트 빚진 자 하나를 데려오매
[25] 갚을 것이 없는지라 주인이 명하여 그 몸과 처와 자식들과 모든 소유를 다 팔아 갚게 하라 한대
[26] 그 종이 엎드리어 절하며 가로되 내게 참으소서 다 갚으리이다 하거늘
[27] 그 종의 주인이 불쌍히 여겨 놓아 보내며 그 빚을 탕감하여 주었더니
[28] 그 종이 나가서 제게 백 데나리온 빚진 동관 하나를 만나 붙들어 목을 잡고 가로되 빚을 갚으라 하매
[29] 그 동관이 엎드리어 간구하여 가로되 나를 참아 주소서 갚으리이다 하되
[30] 허락하지 아니하고 이에 가서 저가 빚을 갚도록 옥에 가두거늘
[31] 그 동관들이 그것을 보고 심히 민망하여 주인에게 가서 그 일을 다 고하니
[32] 이에 주인이 저를 불러다가 말하되 악한 종아 네가 빌기에 내가 네 빚을 전부 탕감하여 주었거늘
[33] 내가 너를 불쌍히 여김과 같이 너도 네 동관을 불쌍히 여김이 마땅치 아니하냐 하고
[34] 주인이 노하여 그 빚을 다 갚도록 저를 옥졸들에게 붙이니라
[35] 너희가 각각 중심으로 형제를 용서하지 아니하면 내 천부께서도 너희에게 이와 같이 하시리라
