SERVING GOD, NOT SELF		자신을 기리지 말고 하나님을 섬기라
[ 2 Samuel 18:12 - 18:18 ] - hymn 449 During his lifetime Absalom had taken a pillar and erected it . . . as a monument to himself. [ 2 SAMUEL 18:18 ] The ancient Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II thought so much of himself that he had numerous structures built in his honor, including many monuments that captured his physical fea-tures. One, the colossal statue of Ramesses II, stands thirty-six feet tall and weighs eighty-three tons in all its red-granite glory. Age wasn’t kind to the proud ruler, however. In fact, when he died, he was suffering from bad teeth, arthritis, and chronic heart problems. Some of his monuments might last for a while, but—like all mortals—he himself passed. Absalom, one of King David’s sons, also built “a monument to himself” (2 SAMUEL 18:18). Fueled by rage from past tragedy (SEE CH. 13) and selfish ambition, this younger man worked to steal “the hearts of the people of Israel” from his father (15:6). When Absalom attempted to pilfer the throne, however, God didn’t allow him to overpower David, His anointed king (1 SAMUEL 16:12-13), and David’s fighting men (2 SAMUEL 18:6). In the end, Absalom was killed for his treachery. Although his monument still stood (V. 18), he died humbled and defeated. Building monuments to ourselves and serving our own pride and desires won’t end well. But as we humbly serve God and love Him well (PHILIPPIANS 2:3-8), we’ll find true meaning and fulfillment in His presence. TOM FELTEN		[ 사무엘하 18:12 - 18:18 ] - 찬송가 449 장 압살롬이 살았을 때에 자기를 위하여 한 비석을 마련하여 세웠으니... 자기 이름을 기념하여 그 비석에 이름을 붙였으며 [사무엘하 18:18] 고대 이집트의 파라오 람세스 2세는 자신을 지나치게 높여 자신의 영광을 기리는 수많은 건축물들을 세웠는데, 그 중에는 그의 신체적 특징을 표현한 기념비도 많이 있었습니다. 그 중 람세스 2세의 거대한 동상은 높이 36 피트(11미터), 무게 83톤에 달하는 붉은 화강암이 위용을 자랑합니다. 하지만 세월은 이 거만한 통치자를 비켜가지 않았습니다. 실제로, 죽을 당시 그는 치아 문제, 관절염, 만성 심장 질환 등으로 고통받고 있었습니다. 그 많던 그를 기리는 기념비 중 몇개가 지금까지 남아 있는지 모르나, 죽음을 피할 수 없는 모든 인간들처럼 그도 결국 세상을 떠났습니다. 다윗 왕의 아들 중 한 명인 압살롬도 “자기를 위하여 한 비석”을 세웠 습니다(사무엘하 18:18). 과거의 비극(13장 참조)에 대한 분노와 이기적인 야망에 사로잡힌 이 젊은이는 아버지에게서 “이스라엘 사람의 마음”을 훔치려 했습니다 (15:6). 그러나 압살롬이 왕위를 찬탈하려 했을 때, 하나님은 그가 기름 부음 받은 왕 다윗(사무엘상 16:12-13)과 그의 용사들(사무엘하 18:6) 위에 군림하는 것을 허락하지 않으셨습니다. 결국 압살롬은 왕을 배반한 이유로 살해되었습니다. 비록 그의 기념비는 여전히 서 있었지만(18절), 그는 싸움터에서 초라하게 패배한 채 죽었습니다. 오직 자신을 위해 기념비를 세우고 자신의 교만과 욕망에 따라 산다면 반드시 그 끝이 좋지 못할 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 겸손히 하나님을 섬기고 진심으로 사랑할 때(빌립보서 2:3-8), 비로소 그분의 임재 안에서 진정한 의미와 충만함을 찾게 됩니다.

12 But the man replied, “Even if a thousand shekels were weighed out into my hands, I would not lay a hand on the king's son. In our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.’

13 And if I had put my life in jeopardy—and nothing is hidden from the king—you would have kept your distance from me.”

14 Joab said, “I'm not going to wait like this for you.” So he took three javelins in his hand and plunged them into Absalom's heart while Absalom was still alive in the oak tree.

15 And ten of Joab's armor-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him and killed him.

16 Then Joab sounded the trumpet, and the troops stopped pursuing Israel, for Joab halted them.

17 They took Absalom, threw him into a big pit in the forest and piled up a large heap of rocks over him. Meanwhile, all the Israelites fled to their homes.

18 During his lifetime Absalom had taken a pillar and erected it in the King's Valley as a monument to himself, for he thought, “I have no son to carry on the memory of my name.” He named the pillar after himself, and it is called Absalom's Monument to this day.

왜 자신을 위해 살고 섬기는 것이 헛된 추구일까요?
겸손하게 하나님을 섬긴다는 것은 어떤 모습일까요?

전능하신 하나님, 사랑과 겸손으로 주님을 섬기도록 도와주소서.
오직 하나님만이 저의 경배를 받으실 분입니다.

12 그 사람이 요압에게 대답하되 내가 내 손에 은 천 개를 받는다 할지라도 나는 왕의 아들에게 손을 대지 아니하겠나이다 우리가 들었거니와 왕이 당신과 아비새와 잇대에게 명령하여 이르시기를 삼가 누구든지 젊은 압살롬을 해하지 말라 하셨나이다

13 아무 일도 왕 앞에는 숨길 수 없나니 내가 만일 거역하여 그의 생명을 해하였더라면 당신도 나를 대적하였으리이다 하니

14 요압이 이르되 나는 너와 같이 지체할 수 없다 하고 손에 작은 창 셋을 가지고 가서 상수리나무 가운데서 아직 살아 있는 압살롬의 심장을 찌르니

15 요압의 무기를 든 청년 열 명이 압살롬을 에워싸고 쳐죽이니라

16 ○요압이 나팔을 불어 백성들에게 그치게 하니 그들이 이스라엘을 추격하지 아니하고 돌아오니라

17 그들이 압살롬을 옮겨다가 수풀 가운데 큰 구멍에 그를 던지고 그 위에 매우 큰 돌무더기를 쌓으니라 온 이스라엘 무리가 각기 장막으로 도망하니라

18 압살롬이 살았을 때에 자기를 위하여 한 비석을 마련하여 세웠으니 이는 그가 자기 이름을 전할 아들이 내게 없다고 말하였음이더라 그러므로 자기 이름을 기념하여 그 비석에 이름을 붙였으며 그 비석이 왕의 골짜기에 있고 이제까지 그것을 압살롬의 기념비라 일컫더라
