| A Sure Salvation |

| If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. — Romans 10:9 |
| A story is told that Queen Victoria of the UK was deeply moved during a church service. Afterward, she asked her chaplain, “Can one be absolutely sure in this life of eternal safety?” He did not have an answer. But an evangelist named John Townsend heard about the Queen’s question, and after much prayer he sent her a note: “With trembling hands, but heartfelt love, and because I know that we can be absolutely sure now of our eternal life in the Home that Jesus went to prepare, may I ask your Most Gracious Majesty to read the following passages of Scripture: John 3:16; Romans 10:9-10?” Two weeks later, the evangelist received this letter: “... I have carefully and prayerfully read the portions of Scripture referred to. I believe in the finished work of Christ for me, and trust by God’s grace to meet you in that Home of which He said, ‘I go to prepare a place for you.’— Victoria Guelph” Townsend was confident that in this life we can have assurance of eternal safety (v.9), and he had a concern for others as well. Consider what John 3:16 and Romans 10:9-10 mean for your eternal destiny. God desires to give you the confidence that your sin is forgiven and that after death you’ll be with Him forever. |

| Romans 10:8-15 [8] But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: [9] That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. [11] As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." [12] For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, [13] for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." [14] How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? [15] And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" |

| 영국의 빅토리아 여왕이 예배 중에 깊이 감동된 적이 있었다고 합니다. 예배가 끝난 후 여왕이 목사에게 “사람이 이 세상에 사는 동안 영원한 구원에 대해 절대적으로 확신할 수 있겠습니까”라고 물었는데, 목사는 답변하지 못했습니다. 하지만 여왕의 질문에 대해 듣게 된 존 타운센드라는 전도자는 기도를 많이 한 후에 다음과 같은 내용의 글을 여왕에게 보냈습니다. “저는 예수님께서 먼저 가셔서 준비해두신 하늘나라 처소에서 우리가 누릴 영생에 대해 지금 절대적으로 확신할 수 있다는 것을 알기 때문에, 떨리는 손과 진심어린 사랑의 마음으로 여왕께 요한복음 3장 16절과 로마서 10:9-10을 읽어보시도록 권해드리고 싶습니다.” 두 주 후 그 전도자는 여왕으로부터 서신을 받았습니다. “…언급하신 성경구절들을 기도하면서 주의 깊게 읽었습니다. 이제 나는 그리스도께서 나를 위해 이미 완성하신 일을 믿으며, 또 하나님의 은혜로 ‘너를 위하여 처소를 예비하러 가노라’고 말씀하신 그 집에서 당신을 만나게 될 것을 믿습니다. -빅토리아 겔프” 타운센드는 우리가 현재의 삶에서 영원한 구원을 확신할 수 있다고(9절) 분명히 믿었으며, 다른 사람들의 확신에 대해서도 관심을 가졌습니다. 요한복음 3장 16절과 로마서 10:9-10이 당신의 영원한 목적지에 대해 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 생각해보십시오. 하나님은 당신의 죄가 영원히 사함을 받았으며, 죽음 이후에 당신이 하나님과 영원히 함께 있게 될 것이라는 확신을 당신에게 간절히 주고 싶어 하십니다. |
