[ Matthew 17:24 - 17:27 ] - hymn 382 Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. [ MATTHEW 17:27 ] In 2024, teenager Keegan happily reeled in a two-foot barra-mundi. But his happiness became elation when his little sister pointed out a tag on the fish. His catch was worth one million dollars as part of an Australian fishing competition. The annual event had been held since 2015; Keegan was the first to win the coveted top cash prize. However slim the odds of catching that fish, the odds were far lower that a fish caught at random would have a coin in its mouth. But in Matthew’s gospel, Jesus instructed His disciple Peter to “go to the lake and . . . take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin” (17:27). The context of this unlikely catch was a question of whether Jesus paid the temple tax (V. 24). The irony of insisting that Jesus—God’s Son—pay a tax to support God’s temple, wasn’t lost on Him. He pointed out that the king’s children don’t pay taxes to the king (VV. 25-26). But there was no need to “cause offense” and distract oth-ers from His teaching by being perceived as a tax evader (V. 27). So Jesus instructed Peter to catch that fish, which had the exact amount to pay both His and Peter’s tax! Perhaps in part it was a reminder to Peter—and to us—that God is a provider who is always with His children as they follow Him. MONICA LA ROSE		[ 마태복음 17:24 - 17:27 ] - 찬송가 382 장 먼저 오르는 고기를 가져 입을 열면 돈 한 세겔을 얻을 것이니 [마태복음 17:27] 2024년 십대 소년 키건은 60cm 길이의 바라문디 물고기를 낚고는 신이 났습니다. 그런데 여동생이 물고기에 붙은 꼬리표를 가리키는 순간 그의 기쁨은 환희로 바뀌었습니다. 그 고기는 호주에서 열린 낚시 대회에서 무려 백만 달러의 상금이 걸린 고기였기 때문입니다. 2015년부터 매년 열려 온 이 대회에서 키건은 최고 상금의 첫 수상자가 되었습니다. 그 물고기를 낚을 확률은 낮았습니다. 그러나 우연히 낚은 물고기가 동전을 물고 있을 확률은 훨씬 더 낮습니다. 마태복음에서 예수님은 제자 베드로에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “바다에 가서 낚시를 던져 먼저 오르는 고기를 가져 입을 열면 돈 한 세겔을 얻을 것이니”(17:27). 이 신기한 사건의 배경에는 예수님도 성전세를 내야 하는가(24절)라는 질문이 있었습니다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들인 자신이 하나님의 성전을 위해 세금을 내야 한다는 요구가 얼마나 모순인지 알고 계셨습니다. 왕의 자녀는 왕에게 세금을 내지 않는다는 말씀도 하셨습니다(25-26절). 그러나 사람들이 예수님을 세금을 내지 않는 자로 여겨 “실족하여” 그의 가르침에서 떠나게 할 필요는 없었던 것입니다(27절). 그래서 예수님은 베드로에게 물고기를 잡아오라고 하셨고, 그 물고기의 입에는 예수님과 베드로의 성전세를 낼 만큼의 동전이 들어 있었습니다! 어쩌면 이 사건은 베드로에게, 그리고 우리 모두에게, 하나님은 언제나 그분을 따르는 자녀들과 함께하시는 공급자이심을 잊지 않게 하시려는 것인 듯합니다.

24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?”

25 “Yes, he does,” he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?”

26 “From others,” Peter answered. “Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him.

27 “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

26 베드로가 이르되 타인에게니이다 예수께서 이르시되 그렇다면 아들들은 세를 면하리라

27 그러나 우리가 그들이 실족하지 않게 하기 위하여 네가 바다에 가서 낚시를 던져 먼저 오르는 고기를 가져 입을 열면 돈 한 세겔을 얻을 것이니 가져다가 나와 너를 위하여 주라 하시니라
