[ 2 Kings 6:9 - 6:17 ] - hymn 383 Those who are with us are more than those who are with them. [ 2 KINGS 6:16 ] The face was there all along, but no one knew. When Sir Joshua Reynolds painted The Death of Cardinal Beaufort in 1789, he put a demon’s face in the darkness behind the dying man. Reynolds was accurately depicting a scene from a Shakespearean play that mentions the presence of a “busy, meddling fiend,” but some didn’t like his literalism. After Reynolds’ death in 1792, the face was painted over and forgot-ten. Art conservation work recently revealed it under layers of paint and varnish. The Bible tells of a spiritual reality around us that the eye can’t see, where God reigns supreme. When Elisha was surrounded by a “strong force” of enemy soldiers and chariots, his servant was frightened and asked, “What shall we do?” Elisha told him that “those who are with us are more than those who are with them,” and “prayed, ‘Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.’ ” Suddenly the servant “saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 KINGS 6:14-17). The horses and chariots of fire indicate angelic beings there for Elisha’s protection. This is one of many places where Scripture underscores the comforting truth that in a world where danger lurks and spiritual warfare rages, God still watches over us. No matter what we face, how good it is to know that nothing “will be able to separate us” from His love (ROMANS 8:39). 9 The man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there.”

10 So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.

13 “Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.”

14 Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city.

15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.

16 “Don't be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

13 왕이 이르되 너희는 가서 엘리사가 어디 있나 보라 내가 사람을 보내어 그를 잡으리라 왕에게 아뢰어 이르되 보라 그가 도단에 있도다 하나이다

14 ○왕이 이에 말과 병거와 많은 군사를 보내매 그들이 밤에 가서 그 성읍을 에워쌌더라

15 하나님의 사람의 사환이 일찍이 일어나서 나가보니 군사와 말과 병거가 성읍을 에워쌌는지라 그의 사환이 엘리사에게 말하되 아아, 내 주여 우리가 어찌하리이까 하니

16 대답하되 두려워하지 말라 우리와 함께 한 자가 그들과 함께 한 자보다 많으니라 하고

17 기도하여 이르되 여호와여 원하건대 그의 눈을 열어서 보게 하옵소서 하니 여호와께서 그 청년의 눈을 여시매 그가 보니 불말과 불병거가 산에 가득하여 엘리사를 둘렀더라
