[ 1 Thessalonians 1:2 - 1:7 ] - hymn 221 We remember . . . your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope. [ 1 THESSALONIANS 1:3 ] Emily Kenward walked down Lavender Street in Brighton, England. Having recently become a believer in Jesus, she now saw the street differently. She noticed how many homes had their curtains drawn in the daytime, and how few older people were about, despite the area’s high elderly population. It spurred an idea. Emily found out where Brighton’s elderly lived and invited them to an afternoon tea. Those who came told a similar story. Now living alone, they often went months without seeing anyone. What they longed for, they said, was a visitor. Believing in Jesus changes how we respond to the world and its needs. We see this happening to the Thessalonians. Having turned to God (1 THESSALONIANS 1:9), they had become a model of faith to others by their transformed lives (VV. 6-7). The apostle Paul noted their “work produced by faith” and their “labor prompted by love” (V. 3). True faith had moved them to acts of service that brought honor to Jesus. Emily was so moved by what she heard at that afternoon tea that she started a charity linking Brighton’s elderly with volunteer visitors. She remembers one woman hugging her tightly, sobbing, grateful for finally feeling seen and heard. The work grew, inspir-ing others to do the same. It makes me wonder what labors prompted by love the Holy Spirit might inspire you and me to do today. SHERIDAN VOYSEY		[ 데살로니가전서 1:2 - 1:7 ] - 찬송가 221 장 너희 믿음의 역사와 사랑의 수고와... 소망의 인내를... 끊임없이 기억함이니 [데살로니가전서 1:3] 에밀리 켄워드는 영국 브라이튼의 라벤더가를 걷고 있었습니다. 최근에 예수님을 믿기 시작한 에밀리의 눈에 그 거리는 이제 다르게 보였습니다. 낮에도 커튼을 닫아 놓은 집들이 눈에 들어왔고, 노년층이 많은 이 지역의 거리에 노인들의 모습은 거의 찾아볼 수가 없었습니다. 그녀에게 한 가지 생각이 떠올랐습니다. 에밀리는 브라이튼에 사는 노인들의 주소를 찾아 그들을 오후 다과 모임에 초대했습니다. 모임에 온 노인들은 비슷한 이야기를 털어놓았습니다. 혼자 살면서 몇 달 동안 한 사람도 만나지 않을 때도 있다는 것이었습니다. 그들이 제일 바라는 것은 누군가가 찾아오는 것이라고 했습니다. 예수님을 믿게 되면 세상과 이웃을 바라보는 눈이 달라집니다. 데살로니가 교회의 성도들에게도 그런 일이 일어났습니다. 하나님께로 돌아온 그들은 (데살로니가전서 1:9) 변화된 삶을 통해 다른 이들에게 믿음의 본이 되었습니다 (6-7절). 바울 사도는 그들이 보여준 “믿음의 열매”와 “사랑의 수고”를 언급 했습니다(3절). 참된 믿음은 그들을 감화시켜 예수님께 영광을 돌리는 섬김의 행위들을 하게 만들었던 것입니다. 오후 다과 모임에서 들은 이야기들에 마음의 울림을 느낀 에밀리는 자원 봉사자들과 브라이튼의 노인들을 연결해주는 자선 단체를 만들었습니다. 한 할머니는 에밀리를 찾아와 껴안고 흐느끼며 드디어 누군가가 바라보아 주고 자신의 이야기를 들어주어 고맙다고 말했습니다. 이 사역은 점점 커져서 더 많은 사람들이 참여하게 되었습니다. 오늘 성령님께서 여러분과 제게 어떤 사랑의 수고를 하도록 영감을 주실지 궁금해집니다.

2 We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers.

3 We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

4 For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you,

5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.

7 And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.

4 하나님의 사랑하심을 받은 형제들아 너희를 택하심을 아노라

5 이는 우리 복음이 너희에게 말로만 이른 것이 아니라 또한 능력과 성령과 큰 확신으로 된 것임이라 우리가 너희 가운데서 너희를 위하여 어떤 사람이 된 것은 너희가 아는 바와 같으니라

6 또 너희는 많은 환난 가운데서 성령의 기쁨으로 말씀을 받아 우리와 주를 본받은 자가 되었으니

7 그러므로 너희가 마게도냐와 아가야에 있는 모든 믿는 자의 본이 되었느니라
