A HUMBLE THANKSGIVING		겸손한 감사
[ Proverbs 22:1 - 22:6 ] - hymn 299 Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. [ PROVERBS 22:6 ] One Thanksgiving I called home to greet my parents. As we talked, I asked my mom what she was most grateful for. She exclaimed that she was most grateful that “all three of my children know how to call on the name of the Lord.” For my mother, who’d always emphasized the importance of education, there was something more valuable than her children doing well in school and taking care of themselves. Her sentiments remind me of Proverbs 22:6: “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” While this isn’t a promise but more a wise prin- ciple, and many children do wander from God for a least a season of life, she and my father had strived to raise us to humbly, rever- ently love God (V. 4)—primarily through example. Now, by His grace, they were able to see us grow older and benefit from a personal relationship with Him. As verse 2 says, God is “the Maker of ...all.” And although some children will respond to loving instruction in Christ, others might take longer perhaps to hear His voice. For those precious children, we continue to pray and rest in God’s timing. Mom’s humble thanksgiving points to what’s most important in life. Reverently loving God yields spiritual riches for this life and beyond (V. 4). And while we can’t control what children will choose to do, we can rest in the hope that God will lovingly con- tinue to work in their hearts. KATARA PATTON		[ 잠언 22:1 - 22:6 ] - 찬송가 299 장 마땅히 행할 길을 아이에게 가르치라 그리하면 늙어도 그것을 떠나지 아니하리라 [잠언 22:6] 어느 해 추수감사절에 부모님께 전화를 걸어 인사를 드리고 대화를 나누던 중, 어머니께 올 한 해 가장 감사한 것이 무엇인지 여쭈어 보았습니다. 그러자 어머니는 “내 세 아이가 모두 주님의 이름을 부르며 찾을 줄 아는 것”이 가장 감사하다고 당당하게 말씀하셨습니다. 항상 교육의 중요성을 강조하셨던 어머니셨지만, 그분 마음 속에는 자녀들이 학교에서 좋은 성적을 받거나 스스로를 돌보는 것보다도 더 가치 있는 다른 무언가가 있었습니다. 어머니의 마음을 생각하다 보니 “마땅히 행할 길을 아이에게 가르치라 그리하면 늙어도 그것을 떠나지 아니하리라”는 잠언 22장 6절 말씀이 떠올랐습니다. 이 말씀은 약속이라기보다는 오히려 지혜로운 원칙입니다. 인생의 어느 시기에 한때 하나님을 떠나 방황하는 자녀들이 많지만, 우리 부모님은 자신들이 하나님을 믿는 본을 보여주시며 우리가 겸손하고 경건하게 하나님을 사랑하도록 양육하려고 애쓰셨습니다(4절). 이제 하나님의 은혜로 부모님은 우리가 자라며 하나님을 개인적으로 알고 복을 누리는 모습을 지켜보실 수 있게 되었습니다. 2절 말씀처럼, 하나님은 “모두를 지으신 분”(새번역)입니다. 어떤 자녀들은 예수님의 사랑의 가르침을 잘 받아들이지만, 어떤 자녀들은 그분의 음성을 듣기까지 더 오랜 시간이 걸릴 수도 있습니다. 그런 귀한 자녀들을 위해 우리는 계속 기도하며 하나님의 때를 기다려야 합니다. 어머니의 겸손한 감사는 우리 삶에서 가장 중요한 것이 무엇인지 잘 가리키고 있습니다. 경건하게 하나님을 사랑하는 것은 이 세상 삶 뿐 아니라 영원한 삶에서도 풍성한 영적 축복을 가져다줍니다(4절). 비록 자녀들이 어떤 선택을 할지 우리 마음대로 조종할 수는 없지만, 하나님께서 사랑으로 그들 마음 속에서 계속 일하실 거라는 소망 가운데 우리는 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다.

1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

2 Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all.

3 The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.

4 Humility is the fear of the LORD; its wages are riches and honor and life.

5 In the paths of the wicked are snares and pitfalls, but those who would preserve their life stay far from them.

6 Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

4 겸손과 여호와를 경외함의 보상은 재물과 영광과 생명이니라

5 패역한 자의 길에는 가시와 올무가 있거니와 영혼을 지키는 자는 이를 멀리 하느니라

6 마땅히 행할 길을 아이에게 가르치라 그리하면 늙어도 그것을 떠나지 아니하리라
