REMINDER OF GOD’S PRESENCE		하나님의 임재를 떠올리는 상징
[ Joshua 8:1 - 8:27 ] - hymn 543 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” [ JOSHUA 8:1 ] With branches of scraggly leaves growing upward like hands raised to the heavens, the unique trees we saw while hiking Joshua Tree National Park in California intrigued us. Many believe the trees were dubbed “Joshua Trees” by pioneers, who were reminded by the trees of an Old Testament story where Joshua lifted high a javelin as a sign of God’s presence and help. After entering Canaan, the Israelites needed God’s help in battle. After being defeated at the city of Ai due to their sin (JOSHUA 7:11-12), the Israelites were likely afraid to fight the city again. But God encouraged Joshua, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (8:1). Then God told Joshua to “hold out toward Ai the javelin that is in your hand, for into your hand I will deliver the city” (V. 18). Joshua obeyed God and “did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin” until the battle was won (V. 26). It wasn’t the javelin in Joshua’s outstretched hand that secured the victory. Instead, it was a symbol of God’s promise to help them and be with them. Reminders of God’s presence with us can be helpful when we face difficult challenges. A Bible verse displayed in our homes, a stunning picture of God’s creation, a cross necklace: These things don’t provide assistance, but God can use them to remind us of His promised presence and power. SAMRA		[ 여호수아 8:1 - 8:27 ] - 찬송가 543 장 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 두려워하지 말라 놀라지 말라 [여호수아 8:1] 캘리포니아의 조슈아트리 국립공원을 하이킹하던 중, 잎이 듬성듬성 달린 가지들이 하늘을 향해 뻗은 손처럼 자라고 있는 특이한 나무가 신기했습니다. 이 나무를 “조슈아트리(여호수아 나무)”라고 이름 지은 이들은 바로 하나님의 임재와 도우심을 상징하며 단창을 높이 들었던 구약에 나오는 여호수아의 이야기를 떠올린 개척자들이라고 합니다. 가나안 땅에 들어온 이스라엘 백성은 전쟁을 치르며 하나님의 도우심이 절실했습니다. 그들의 죄로 인해 아이 성에서 패배한 후(여호수아 7:11–12), 이스라엘 백성들은 또 싸우는 것을 두려워했을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 “두려워하지 말라, 놀라지 말라”(8:1)고 여호수아를 격려하셨습니다. 그리고 여호수아에게 말씀하셨습니다. “네 손에 잡은 단창을 들어 아이를 가리키라 내가 이 성읍을 네 손에 넘겨 주리라”(18절). 여호수아는 하나님께 순종하여 전투를 이길 때까지 “단창을 잡아 든 손을 거두지 아니하였”습니다(26절). 전쟁의 승리를 가져온 것은 여호수아가 든 단창이 아니었습니다. 높이 들린 그 단창은 도우시고 함께 하시겠다는 하나님의 약속을 상징하는 증표였습니다. 어려운 도전을 맞닥뜨릴 때, 하나님의 임재를 상기시켜주는 것들은 큰 힘이 됩니다. 집 안에 걸려있는 성경 구절, 하나님의 피조물을 담은 아름다운 사진, 십자가 목걸이 같은 물건들 자체가 도움을 주는 것은 아니지만, 이를 통해 하나님은 그분의 임재와 능력의 약속을 상기시켜 주십니다.

What reminds you of God’s presence? How does this reminder help you face challenging situations?

Heavenly Father, in the challenges I face today, please help me to remember Your presence with me.

1Then the LORD said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack Ai. For I have delivered into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land.
18 Then the LORD said to Joshua, 'Hold out toward Ai the javelin that is in your hand, for into your hand I will deliver the city.'
19 As soon as he did this, the men in the ambush rose quickly from their position and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it and quickly set it on fire.
24 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the desert where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it.
25 Twelve thousand men and women fell that day-all the people of Ai.
26 For Joshua did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin until he had destroyed all who lived in Ai.
27 But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of this city, as the LORD had instructed Joshua.

어떤 것들이 하나님의 임재를 상기시키나요? 그것이 어떻게 어려움을 이겨내는 데 도움이 됩니까?

하늘에 계신 아버지, 오늘 제가 직면한 어려움 속에서도 저와 함께 하시는 주님의 임재를 기억하게 하소서.

1 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 두려워하지 말라 놀라지 말라 군사를 다 거느리고 일어나 아이로 올라가라 보라 내가 아이 왕과 그의 백성과 그의 성읍과 그의 땅을 다 네 손에 넘겨 주었으니
18 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 네 손에 잡은 단창을 들어 아이를 가리키라 내가 이 성읍을 네 손에 넘겨 주리라 여호수아가 그의 손에 잡은 단창을 들어 그 성읍을 가리키니
19 그의 손을 드는 순간에 복병이 그들의 자리에서 급히 일어나 성읍으로 달려 들어가서 점령하고 곧 성읍에 불을 놓았더라
24 이스라엘이 자기들을 광야로 추격하던 모든 아이 주민을 들에서 죽이되 그들을 다 칼날에 엎드러지게 하여 진멸하기를 마치고 온 이스라엘이 아이로 돌아와서 칼날로 죽이매
25 그 날에 엎드러진 아이 사람들은 남녀가 모두 만 이천 명이라
26 아이 주민들을 진멸하여 바치기까지 여호수아가 단창을 잡아 든 손을 거두지 아니하였고
27 오직 그 성읍의 가축과 노략한 것은 여호와께서 여호수아에게 명령하신 대로 이스라엘이 탈취하였더라
