In a materialistic world like ours, we are tempted to conclude that the only real things are those we experience with our five senses. Yet "there are things we cannot see: things behind our backs or far away and all things in the dark," said C. S. Lewis.

There is another realm of reality, just as actual, just as factual, just as substantial as anything we see, hear, touch, taste, or smell in this world. It exists all around us-not out there "somewhere," but "here." There are legions of angels helping us, for which the world has no counter-measures (Hebrews 1:14). The psalmist David referred to them as a force of thousands of thousands of chariots (Psalm 68:17). We cannot see God nor His angels with our natural eyes. But they are there, whether we see them or not. I believe the world is filled with them. Faith is the means by which we are able to "see" this invisible world. That is belief's true function.

Faith is to the spiritual realm what the five senses are to the natural realm. The writer of Hebrews says that faith is "the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). By faith we recognize the existence of the spiritual world and learn to depend on the Lord for His help in our daily life. Our goal, then, as George MacDonald once said, is to "grow eyes" to see the unseen. - DHR

이 세상에는 또 다른 영역이 있습니다. 우리가 이 세상에서 보고, 듣고, 만지고, 맛보고, 냄새 맡는 것들과 똑 같이 현실적이며, 사실적이고, 실체적인 것들이 있습니다. 이것들은 우리 주위 모든 곳에 존재하고 있으며 “어디엔가”에 있는 것이 아니고 바로 “이곳에” 있습니다. 곧 이 세상이 대항할 수 없는 천군천사들이 우리를 돕고 있습니다 (히 1:14). 시편기자 다윗은 천사들을 만만의 병력이라고 표현했습니다 (시 68:17). 우리 육신의 눈으로는 하나님이나 하나님의 천사들을 볼 수 없습니다. 그러나 우리가 그들을 볼 수 있거나 볼 수 없거나에 상관없이 그들은 존재합니다. 나는 이 세상이 천사들로 가득 차 있다고 믿습니다.

믿음은 이런 보이지 않는 세계를 우리로 하여금 볼 수 있게 해주는 도구입니다. 이것이 믿음의 참된 역할입니다. 오감이 자연의 영역이라면, 믿음은 영적인 영역입니다. 히브리서 저자는 믿음을 “보지 못하는 것들의 증거”라고 말합니다 (히 11:1). 믿음으로 우리는 영적인 세계의 존재를 알며, 매일의 삶에서 주님의 도움을 구하며 주님께 의지하는 것을 배웁니다. 그러므로 우리의 목표는 조지 맥도날드의 말처럼 보이지 않는 것을 볼 수 있도록 “눈을 개발”시키는 것입니다.
