[ John 9:13 - 9:23 ] (Hymn342)

13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.
14 Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.
15 So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them.
17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”
18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight
19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”
20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.”
22 (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.)
23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”

13그들은 전에 눈먼 사람이던 그를 바리새파 사람들에게 데리고 갔다.
14 그런데 예수께서 진흙을 개어 그의 눈을 뜨게 하신 날이 안식일이었다.
15 바리새파 사람들은 또다시 그에게 어떻게 보게 되었는지를 물었다. 그는 “그분이 내 눈에 진흙을 바르신 다음에 내가 눈을 씻었더니, 이렇게 보게 되었습니다” 하고 대답하였다.
16 바리새파 사람들 가운데 더러는 말하기를 “안식일을 지키지 않는 것으로 보아서, 그는 하나님에게서 온 사람이 아니오” 하였고, 더러는 “죄가 있는 사람이 어떻게 그러한 표징을 행할 수 있겠소?” 하고 말하였다. 그래서 그들 사이에 의견이 갈라졌다.
17 그들은 눈멀었던 사람에게 다시 물었다. “그가 당신의 눈을 뜨게 하였는데, 당신은 그를 어떻게 생각하오?” 그가 대답하였다. “그분은 예언자입니다.”
18 유대 사람들은, 그가 전에 눈먼 사람이었다가 보게 되었다는 사실을 믿지 않고, 마침내 그 부모를 불러다가
19 물었다. “이 사람이, 날 때부터 눈먼 사람이었다는 당신의 아들이오? 그런데, 지금은 어떻게 보게 되었소?”
20 부모가 대답하였다. “이 아이가 우리 아들이라는 것과, 날 때부터 눈먼 사람이었다는 것은, 우리가 압니다.
21 그런데 우리는 그가 지금 어떻게 보게 되었는지도 모르고, 또 누가 그 눈을 뜨게 하였는지도 모릅니다. 다 큰 사람이니, 그에게 물어 보십시오. 그가 자기 일을 이야기할 것입니다.”
22 그 부모는 유대 사람들이 무서워서 이렇게 말한 것이다. 예수를 그리스도라고 고백하는 사람은 누구든지 회당에서 내쫓기로, 유대 사람들이 이미 결의해 놓았기 때문이다.
23 그래서 그의 부모가, 그 아이가 다 컸으니 그에게 물어보라고 말한 것이다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
The Pharisees had divided opinions over Jesus’ act of healing. Some argued that he must not be from God because he had violated the Sabbath. Others argued that no sinner could heal a blind man like Jesus had (vv. 13-16). When the formerly blind man confessed he believed Jesus was a prophet, the Jews summoned his parents for interrogation. They testified that their son had been blind since birth, but did not know how his sight had been restored. They said this because they feared being expelled from the synagogue (vv. 17-23).
바리새파 사람들은 예수님이 하신 일을 두고 의견이 갈립니다. (13-16절). 어떤 이들은 예수님이 안식일을 어겼기 때문에 하나님께로부터 온 분일 수 없다고 주장했습니
다. 반면에 다른 이들은 죄인이라면 예수님처럼 맹인을 고칠 수 없을 것이라고 말했습니다. 당사자인 눈멀었던 사람이 예수님을 ‘예언자’라고 고백하자, 유대 사람들은 그의 부모를 불러와 취조합니다. 부모는 그가 날 때부터 눈먼 사람이라는 것을 증언했지만, 어떻게 보게 되었는지는 모른다고 말합니다. 그들은 유대 사람들의 회당에서 쫓겨날 것을 두려워하여 입을 다뭅니다(17-23절).
What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 16-18 Many people turn a blind eye to the things they do not wish to believe. They try to avoid the truth that is right before their eyes because it does not benefit them, because they fear losing their authority, or because they cannot let go of their own ideas of right and wrong. Have I ever consciously shut my eyes to the truth? Let us watch lest our souls be blinded by greed.
믿고 싶지 않은 일에는 눈을 감아 버리는 사람들이 있습니다. 자기편이 아니라서, 자기 권리가 침해될 것을 염려해서, 자기 신념을 포기할 수 없어서 눈앞에 드러난 사실도 보지 않으려는 것입니다. 진실에 일부러 눈감은 적은 없습니까? 욕심이 나의 영적인 눈을 가리지 않도록 조심하십시오.

Vv. 22-23 Some keep quiet because they are afraid. Those who had witnessed Jesus’ works did not deny him openly like some of the Jewish leaders did, but it was not right for them to keep quiet about what they had witnessed. They valued being members of the synagogue over becoming Jesus’ disciples. Do I also keep quiet and live as though I am not a Christ-follower for fear of drawing the world’s attention? We must boldly persevere in being his witnesses.
두려움 때문에 입을 닫는 사람들이 있습니다. 유대 사람들처럼 대놓고 부인한 것은 아니지만, 목격자로서 침묵한 것은 잘못입니다. 그들은 예수님의 새 가족이 되는 일보다 유대 사람의 회당에 속하는 편을 택했습니다. 나도 세상 이목이 두려워 예수님을 모른 척하고 그리스도인이 아닌 척하며 살지는 않습니까? 증인으로서의 의무를 내팽개치지 말아야 합니다.

Prayer
Lord, you opened my eyes to see. You rescued me from death. Help me to bear witness to who you are with my very being.
