1Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. 4 And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
1요한보다 예수께서 더 많은 사람을 제자로 삼고 세례를 주신다는 소문이 바리새파 사람들의 귀에 들어간 것을 예수께서 아셨다. 2 -사실은, 예수께서 직접 세례를 주신 것이 아니라, 그 제자들이 준 것이다.- 3 예수께서는 유대를 떠나, 다시 갈릴리로 가셨다. 4 그렇게 하려면, 사마리아를 거쳐서 가실 수밖에 없었다. 5 예수께서 사마리아에 있는 수가라는 마을에 이르셨다. 이 마을은 야곱이 아들 요셉에게 준 땅에서 가까운 곳이며, 6 야곱의 우물이 거기에 있었다. 예수께서 길을 가시다가, 피로하셔서 우물가에 앉으셨다. 때는 오정쯤이었다. 7 한 사마리아 여자가 물을 길으러 나왔다. 예수께서 그 여자에게 마실 물을 좀 달라고 말씀하셨다. 8 제자들은 먹을 것을 사러 동네에 들어가서, 그 자리에 없었다. 9 사마리아 여자가 예수께 말하였다. “선생님은 유대 사람인데, 어떻게 사마리아 여자인 나에게 물을 달라고 하십니까?” (유대 사람은 사마리아 사람과 상종하지 않기 때문이다.) 10 예수께서 그 여자에게 대답하셨다. “네가 하나님의 선물을 알고, 또 너에게 물을 달라는 사람이 누구인지를 알았더라면, 도리어 네가 그에게 청하였을 것이고, 그는 너에게 생수를 주었을 것이다.” 11 여자가 말하였다. “선생님, 선생님에게는 두레박도 없고, 이 우물은 깊은데, 선생님은 어디에서 생수를 구하신다는 말입니까? 12 선생님이 우리 조상 야곱보다 더 위대하신 분이라는 말입니까? 그는 우리에게 이 우물을 주었고, 그와 그 자녀들과 그 가축까지, 다 이 우물의 물을 마셨습니다.” 13 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “이 물을 마시는 사람은 다시 목마를 것이다. 14 그러나 내가 주는 물을 마시는 사람은, 영원히 목마르지 아니할 것이다. 내가 주는 물은, 그 사람 속에서, 영생에 이르게 하는 샘물이 될 것이다.”
