47So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death. 54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples. 55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
47그래서 대제사장들과 바리새파 사람들은 공의회를 소집하여 말하였다. “이 사람이 표징을 많이 행하고 있으니, 어떻게 하면 좋겠습니까? 48 이 사람을 그대로 두면 모두 그를 믿게 될 것이요, 그렇게 되면 로마 사람들이 와서 우리의 땅과 민족을 약탈할 것입니다.” 49 그 가운데 한 사람으로서, 그 해의 대제사장인 가야바가 그들에게 말하였다. “당신들은 아무것도 모르오. 50 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽어서 민족 전체가 망하지 않는 것이, 당신들에게 유익하다는 것을 생각하지 못하고 있소.” 51 이 말은, 가야바가 자기 생각으로 한 것이 아니라, 그 해의 대제사장으로서, 예수가 민족을 위하여 죽으실 것을 예언한 것이니, 52 민족을 위할 뿐만 아니라, 흩어져 있는 하나님의 자녀를 한데 모아서 하나가 되게 하기 위하여 죽으실 것을 예언한 것이다. 53 그들은 그 날로부터 예수를 죽이려고 모의하였다. 54 그래서 예수께서는 유대 사람들 가운데로 더 이상 드러나게 다니지 아니하시고, 거기에서 떠나, 광야에서 가까운 지방 에브라임이라는 마을로 가서, 제자들과 함께 지내셨다. 55 유대 사람들의 유월절이 가까이 다가오니, 많은 사람이 자기의 몸을 성결하게 하려고, 유월절 전에 시골에서 예루살렘으로 올라왔다. 56 그들은 예수를 찾다가, 성전 뜰에 서서 서로 말하였다. “당신들은 어떻게 생각합니까? 그가 명절을 지키러 오지 않겠습니까?” 57 대제사장들과 바리새파 사람들은 예수를 잡으려고, 누구든지 그가 있는 곳을 알거든 알려 달라는 명령을 내려 두었다.
