1Now these are the nations that the LORD left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had not experienced all the wars in Canaan. 2 It was only in order that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, to teach war to those who had not known it before. 3 These are the nations: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath. 4 They were for the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. 5 So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 And their daughters they took to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods. 7 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth. 8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years. 9 But when the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 The Spirit of the LORD was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. 11 So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
1가나안 전쟁을 전혀 겪어 본 일이 없는 모든 이스라엘 백성을 시험하시려고, 주님께서 그 땅에 남겨 두신 민족들이 있다. 2 전에 전쟁을 겪어 본 일이 없는 이스라엘 자손의 세대들에게, 전쟁이 무엇인지 가르쳐 알게 하여 주려고 그들을 남겨 두신 것이다. 3 그들은 바로 블레셋의 다섯 통치자와 가나안 사람 모두와 시돈 사람과 히위 사람이다. 히위 사람은 바알헤르몬 산으로부터 저 멀리 하맛 어귀에까지 이르는 레바논 산에 사는 사람들이다. 4 주님께서 이스라엘 자손을 시험하셔서, 그들이 과연 주님께서 모세를 시켜 조상들에게 내리신 명령에 순종하는지 순종하지 않는지를 알아보시려고 이런 민족들을 남겨놓으신 것이다. 5 그래서 이스라엘 자손은 가나안 사람과 헷 사람과 아모리 사람과 브리스 사람과 히위 사람과 여부스 사람과 함께 섞여 살았다. 6 그리고 이스라엘 자손은 그 여러 민족의 딸을 데려다가 자기들의 아내로 삼았고, 또 자기들의 딸을 그들의 아들에게 주었으며, 그들의 신들을 섬겼다. 7 이스라엘 자손이 주 하나님을 저버리고 바알과 아세라를 섬겨, 주님께서 보시기에 악한 일을 저질렀다. 8 주님께서 이스라엘 백성에게 크게 분노하시고, 그들을 메소포타미아 왕 구산리사다임의 손에 넘겨 주셨다. 이스라엘 자손이 구산리사다임을 여덟 해 동안 섬겼다. 9 이스라엘 자손이 주님께 울부짖으니, 주님께서 그들을 구하여 주시려고 이스라엘 자손 가운데서 한 구원자를 세우셨는데, 그가 곧 갈렙의 아우 그나스의 아들인 옷니엘이다. 10 주님의 영이 그에게 내리니, 옷니엘은 이스라엘의 사사가 되어 전쟁터에 싸우러 나갔다. 주님께서 메소포타미아 왕 구산리사다임을 옷니엘의 손에 넘겨 주셨으므로, 옷니엘은 구산리사다임을 쳐서 이길 수 있었다. 11 그 땅은 그나스의 아들 옷니엘이 죽을 때까지 사십 년 동안 전쟁이 없이 평온하였다.
