1When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” 2 And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die.” 3 So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with his brothers, for he feared that harm might happen to him. 5 Thus the sons of Israel came to buy among the others who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 6 Now Joseph was governor over the land. He was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. 7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them. “Where do you come from?” he said. They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.” 8 And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. 9 And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them. And he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land.” 10 They said to him, “No, my lord, your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all sons of one man. We are honest men. Your servants have never been spies.” 12 He said to them, “No, it is the nakedness of the land that you have come to see.” 13 And they said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.” 14 But Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you. You are spies. 15 By this you shall be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. Or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.” 17 And he put them all together in custody for three days.
1야곱은 이집트에 곡식이 있다는 말을 듣고서, 아들들에게 말하였다. “얘들아, 왜 서로 얼굴들만 쳐다보고 있느냐?” 2 야곱이 말을 이었다. “듣자 하니, 이집트에 곡식이 있다고 하는구나. 그러니 그리로 가서, 곡식을 좀 사오너라. 그래야 먹고 살지, 가만히 있다가는 굶어 죽겠다.” 3 그래서 요셉의 형 열 명이 곡식을 사려고 이집트로 갔다. 4 야곱은 요셉의 아우 베냐민만은 형들에게 딸려 보내지 않았다. 베냐민을 같이 보냈다가, 무슨 변이라도 당할까 보아, 겁이 났기 때문이다. 5 가나안 땅에도 기근이 들었으므로, 이스라엘의 아들들도 곡식을 사러 가는 사람들 틈에 끼었다. 6 그 때에 요셉은 나라의 총리가 되어서, 세상의 모든 백성에게 곡식을 파는 책임을 맡고 있었다. 요셉의 형들은 거기에 이르러서, 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려, 요셉에게 절을 하였다. 7 요셉은 그들을 보자마자, 곧바로 그들이 형들임을 알았다. 그러나 짐짓 모르는 체하고, 그들에게 엄하게 물었다. “당신들은 어디에서 왔소?” 그들이 대답하였다. “먹거리를 사려고, 가나안 땅에서 왔습니다.” 8 요셉은 형들을 알아보았으나, 형들은 요셉을 알아보지 못하였다. 9 그 때에 요셉은 형들을 두고 꾼 꿈을 기억하고, 그들에게 말하였다. “당신들은 첩자들이오. 이 나라의 허술한 곳이 어디인지를 엿보러 온 것이 틀림없소!” 10 그들이 대답하였다. “아닙니다. 총리 어른, 소인들은 그저 먹거리를 사러 왔을 뿐입니다. 11 우리는 한 아버지의 자식들입니다. 소인들은 순진한 백성이며, 첩자가 아닙니다.” 12 그가 말하였다. “아니오! 당신들은 이 나라의 허술한 곳이 어디인지를 엿보러 왔소.” 13 그들이 대답하였다. “소인들은 형제들입니다. 모두 열둘입니다. 가나안 땅에 사는 한 아버지의 아들들입니다. 막내는 소인들의 아버지와 함께 있고, 또 하나는 잃었습니다.” 14 요셉이 그들에게 말하였다. “내 말이 틀림없소. 당신들은 첩자들이오. 15 그러나 당신들이 진실을 증명할 길은 있소. 바로께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하오. 당신들이 막내아우를 이리로 데려오지 않으면, 당신들은 여기에서 한 발자국도 벗어나지 못하오. 16 당신들 가운데서 한 사람을 보내어, 당신들 집에 남아 있는 아우를 이리로 데려오게 하고, 나머지는 감옥에 가두어 두겠소. 나는 이렇게 하여, 당신들이 한 말이 사실인지를 시험해 보겠소. 바로께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하오. 당신들이 그렇게 하지 못하면, 당신들은 첩자라는 누명을 벗지 못할 것이오.” 17 요셉은 그들을 감옥에 사흘 동안 가두어 두었다.
