[ Judges 1:1 - 1:10 ] (Hymn546)

1After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”
2 The LORD said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.”
3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites. And I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you.” So Simeon went with him.
4 Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated10,000 of them at Bezek.
5 They found Adoni-bezek at Bezek and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6 Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.
7 And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8 And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.
9 And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.

1여호수아가 죽은 뒤에, 이스라엘 자손이 주님께 여쭈었다. “우리 가운데 어느 지파가 먼저 올라가서 가나안 사람과 싸워야 합니까?”
2 주님께서 대답하셨다. “유다 지파가 먼저 올라가거라. 내가 그 땅을 유다 지파의 손에 넘겨 주었다.”
3 그 때에 유다 지파 사람들이 자기들의 동기인 시므온 지파 사람들에게 제안하였다. “우리와 함께 우리 몫으로 정해진 땅으로 올라가서, 가나안 사람을 치자. 그러면 우리도 너희 몫으로 정해진 땅으로 함께 싸우러 올라가겠다.” 그리하여 시므온 지파가 유다 지파와 함께 진군하였다.
4 유다 지파가 싸우러 올라갔을 때에, 주님께서 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람을 그들의 손에 넘겨 주셨으므로, 그들은 베섹에서 만 명이나 무찔렀다.
5 그 곳 베섹에서 그들은 아도니베섹을 만나서 그와 싸워, 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람을 무찔렀다.
6 그들은 도망치는 아도니베섹을 뒤쫓아가서 사로잡아, 그의 엄지손가락과 엄지발가락을 잘라 버렸다.
7 그러자 아도니베섹은 “내가 일흔 명이나 되는 왕들의 엄지손가락과 엄지발가락을 잘라 내고, 나의 식탁 밑에서 부스러기를 주워서 먹게 하였더니, 하나님이, 내가 한 그대로 나에게 갚으시는구나!” 하고 탄식하였다. 그는 예루살렘으로 끌려가서 거기에서 죽었다.
8 유다 자손이 예루살렘을 치고 점령하여, 그 곳 주민을 칼로 죽이고, 그 성을 불태웠다.
9 그 다음에 유다 자손은 산간지방과 네겝 지방과 낮은 지대로 내려가서, 거기에 사는 가나안 사람과 싸웠다.
10 또 유다 자손은 헤브론에 사는 가나안 사람을 쳤다. 헤브론은 전에 기럇 아르바라고 불리던 곳이다. 거기에서 그들은 세새와 아히만과 달매를 무찔렀다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
Even after Joshua’s death, God’s command and promise for the people to take over Canaan remained unchanged. The Israelites asked which of them should fight first, and God designated Judah, so Judah marched into the land with the tribe of Simeon. The combined army of the two tribes gained victory at Bezek and captured the ruthless King Adoni-bezek alive. The tribe of Judah conquered the south along with Jerusalem, defeated the descendants of Anak, and seized Hebron. All of their victories were possible because God was with them.
여호수아가 죽었지만, 땅을 차지하라는 주님의 명령과 약속은 변하지 않았습니다. 이스라엘이 누가 먼저 나머지 전쟁에 나설지 묻자, 하나님은 유다 지파를 지목하셨고, 유다는 시므온 지파와 함께 진군합니다. 유다와 시므온 연합군은 베섹에서 승리하고, 잔인한 왕 아도니베섹을 생포합니다. 유다 지파는 예루살렘과 남쪽 지역을 정복하고, 아낙 자손을 무찌르며 헤브론을 점령합니다. 이 모든 승리는 주께서 함께하셨기 때문에 가능했습니다.

Who is God?
VV. 1-2 God is an eternal leader. Worldly leaders come and go, but God, who is our true leader, will always lead and guide us. Let’s not fear the changing world but rely only on the unchanging Word of the Lord. God takes responsibility for individuals and communities who follow his will.
영원한 지도자이십니다. 우리를 이끄는 인간 지도자는 바뀌고 사라지지만, 우리의 참 지도자이신 하나님은 우리와 영원히 함께하시며 우리를 인도하십니다. 변화하는 세상을 두려워하지 말고, 변치 않는 하나님 말씀만 의지하십시오. 하나님은 자신의 뜻을 따르는 이들과 공동체를 이끌며 책임져 주십니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 3-7 A good result doesn’t always justify every step of the process. The tribe of Judah gained victory in Bezek, but they partially disobeyed God by teaming up with Simeon and cruelly punishing Adoni-bezek. Rather than just feeling satisfied with a good result, let’s strive to obey God wholly at every turn and reflect on ourselves to see if we are not justifying worldly means to achieve our spiritual goals.
좋은 결과가 모든 과정을 정당화하지는 않습니다. 유다 지파는 베섹에서 승리했지만, 시므온과 연합하며 부분적으로 불순종했고, 아도니베섹에게 잔인한 방식으로 보복했습니다. 좋은 결과에 만족하기보다 모든 과정에서 온전한 순종을 추구하며, 신앙의 목적을 위해 세상의 수단을 정당화하고 있지는 않은지 돌아봅시다.

Lord, help me to trust in and follow you, who never change, while people and circumstances keep changing.
