12And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD. 13 He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the Amalekites, and went and defeated Israel. And they took possession of the city of palms. 14 And the people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. 15 Then the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. 16 And Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his clothes. 17 And he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute. 19 But he himself turned back at the idols near Gilgal and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And he commanded, “Silence.” And all his attendants went out from his presence. 20 And Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he arose from his seat. 21 And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22 And the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not pull the sword out of his belly; and the dung came out. 23 Then Ehud went out into the porch and closed the doors of the roof chamber behind him and locked them. 24 When he had gone, the servants came, and when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought, “Surely he is relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber.” 25 And they waited till they were embarrassed. But when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them, and there lay their lord dead on the floor. 26 Ehud escaped while they delayed, and he passed beyond the idols and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he arrived, he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was their leader. 28 And he said to them, “Follow after me, for the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and did not allow anyone to pass over. 29 And they killed at that time about10,000 of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; not a man escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years. 31 After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed600 of the Philistines with an oxgoad, and he also saved Israel.
12이스라엘 자손이 다시 주님께서 보시기에 악한 일을 저질렀다. 그들이 이렇게 주님께서 보시기에 악한 일을 저질렀기 때문에, 주님께서는 모압 왕 에글론을 강적이 되게 하여서 이스라엘을 대적하게 하셨다. 13 에글론은 암몬 자손과 아말렉 자손을 모아 이스라엘을 공격하고, 종려나무 성읍인 여리고를 점령하였다. 14 그래서 이스라엘 자손이 열여덟 해 동안이나 모압 왕 에글론을 섬겼다. 15 이스라엘 자손이 주님께 울부짖으니, 주님께서 그들에게 한 구원자를 세우셨는데, 그가 곧 베냐민 지파 게라의 아들인 왼손잡이 에훗이다. 이스라엘 자손은 에훗을 시켜, 모압 왕 에글론에게 조공을 보냈다. 16 그러자 에훗은 길이가 한 자쯤 되는 양쪽에 날이 선 칼을 만들어서 오른쪽 허벅지 옷 속에 차고, 17 모압 왕 에글론에게 가서 조공을 바쳤다. 에글론은 살이 많이 찐 사람이었다. 18 에훗은 조공을 바친 뒤에, 그 조공을 메고 온 사람들을 돌려보냈다. 19 그러나 에훗 자신은 길갈 근처 돌 우상들이 있는 곳에서 되돌아와, 에글론에게 “임금님, 제가 은밀히 드릴 말씀이 있습니다” 하고 아뢰었다. 왕이, 모시고 섰던 부하들에게 물러가라고 명령하자, 그들은 모두 물러갔다. 20 에훗이 왕에게 다가섰을 때에, 마침 왕은 시원한 그의 집 다락방에 홀로 앉아 있었다. 에훗이 “임금님께 전하여 드릴 하나님의 말씀이 있습니다” 하니, 왕은 자리에서 일어섰다. 21 그 때에 에훗은 왼손으로 오른쪽 허벅지에서 칼을 뽑아 왕의 배를 찔렀다. 22 칼자루까지도 칼날을 따라 들어가서 칼 끝이 등 뒤로 나왔다. 에훗이 그 칼을 빼내지 않았으므로, 기름기가 칼에 엉겨 붙었다. 23 에훗은 현관으로 나가, 뒤에서 다락방 문을 닫고 걸어 잠갔다. 24 에훗이 나간 뒤에, 그의 부하들이 와서 다락방 문이 잠겨 있는 것을 보고, 왕이 그 시원한 다락방에서 용변을 보고 있다고 생각하였다. 25 그러나 오랫동안 기다려도 왕이 끝내 다락방 문을 열지 않으므로, 열쇠를 가져다가 문을 열고 보니, 왕이 죽은 채로 바닥에 쓰러져 있었다. 26 그들이 기다리는 동안에 에훗은 몸을 피하여, 돌 우상들이 있는 곳을 지나서 스이라로 도망쳤다. 27 그가 그 곳에 이르러 에브라임 산간지방에서 소집 나팔을 불자, 이스라엘 자손이 그를 따라 산간지방에서 쳐내려갔다. 에훗이 그들을 앞장섰다. 28 “나를 따라라! 주님께서 너희 원수 모압을 너희 손에 넘겨 주셨다.” 그가 이렇게 외치자, 그들이 에훗을 따라 내려가 모압으로 가는 요단 강 나루를 점령하고 한 사람도 건너가지 못하게 하였다. 29 그 때에 그들이 쳐죽인 건장하고 용맹스러운 모압 군인의 수는 모두 만 명이나 되었는데, 한 사람도 도망치지 못하였다. 30 그 날 모압은 굴복하여 이스라엘의 통치를 받게 되었고, 그 뒤로 그 땅에는 팔십 년 동안 전쟁이 없이 평온하였다. 31 에훗 다음에는 아낫의 아들 삼갈이 사사가 되었다. 그는 소를 모는 막대기만으로 블레셋 사람 육백 명을 쳐죽여 이스라엘을 구하였다.
