1It happened at that time that Judah went down from his brothers and turned aside to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. 2 There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. He took her and went in to her, 3 and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er. 4 She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan. 5 Yet again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah. Judah was in Chezib when she bore him. 6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7 But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD put him to death. 8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother's wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. So whenever he went in to his brother's wife he would waste the semen on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother. 10 And what he did was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and he put him to death also. 11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father's house, till Shelah my son grows up”—for he feared that he would die, like his brothers. So Tamar went and remained in her father's house. 12 In the course of time the wife of Judah, Shua's daughter, died. When Judah was comforted, he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 And when Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,” 14 she took off her widow's garments and covered herself with a veil, wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him in marriage. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16 He turned to her at the roadside and said, “Come, let me come in to you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?” 17 He answered, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” And she said, “If you give me a pledge, until you send it—” 18 He said, “What pledge shall I give you?” She replied, “Your signet and your cord and your staff that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him. 19 Then she arose and went away, and taking off her veil she put on the garments of her widowhood. 20 When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite to take back the pledge from the woman's hand, he did not find her. 21 And he asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was at Enaim at the roadside?” And they said, “No cult prostitute has been here.” 22 So he returned to Judah and said, “I have not found her. Also, the men of the place said, ‘No cult prostitute has been here.’” 23 And Judah replied, “Let her keep the things as her own, or we shall be laughed at. You see, I sent this young goat, and you did not find her.” 24 About three months later Judah was told, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has been immoral. Moreover, she is pregnant by immorality.” And Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.” 25 As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, “By the man to whom these belong, I am pregnant.” And she said, “Please identify whose these are, the signet and the cord and the staff.” 26 Then Judah identified them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her again. 27 When the time of her labor came, there were twins in her womb. 28 And when she was in labor, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.” 29 But as he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out. And she said, “What a breach you have made for yourself!” Therefore his name was called Perez. 30 Afterward his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.
1그 무렵에 유다는 형제들에게서 떨어져 나가, 히라라고 하는 아둘람 사람이 사는 곳으로 가서, 그와 함께 살았다. 2 유다는 거기에서 가나안 사람 수아라고 하는 사람의 딸을 만나서 결혼하고, 아내와 동침하였다. 3 그가 임신하여 아들을 낳으니, 유다가 그 아들 이름을 에르라고 하였다. 4 그가 또 임신하여 아들을 낳았다. 이번에는 아이의 어머니가 그 아들 이름을 오난이라고 하였다. 5 그가 또다시 아들을 낳고, 이름을 셀라라고 하였다. 그가 셀라를 낳은 곳은 거십이다. 6 유다가 자기 맏아들 에르를 결혼시켰는데, 그 아내의 이름은 다말이다. 7 유다의 맏아들 에르가 주님께서 보시기에 악하므로, 주님께서 그를 죽게 하셨다. 8 유다가 오난에게 말하였다. “너는 형수와 결혼해서, 시동생으로서의 책임을 다해라. 너는 네 형의 이름을 이을 아들을 낳아야 한다.” 9 그러나 오난은 아들을 낳아도 그가 자기 아들이 안 되는 것을 알고 있었으므로, 형수와 동침할 때마다, 형의 이름을 이을 아들을 낳지 않으려고, 정액을 땅바닥에 쏟아 버리곤 하였다. 10 그가 이렇게 한 것이 주님께서 보시기에 악하였다. 그래서 주님께서는 오난도 죽게 하셨다. 11 유다는 자기의 며느리 다말에게 말하였다. “나의 아들 셀라가 다 클 때까지, 너는 네 친정 아버지 집으로 돌아가서, 과부로 살고 있거라.” 유다는 셀라를 다말에게 주었다가는, 셀라도 제 형들처럼 죽을지 모른다고 생각하였다. 12 그 뒤에 오랜 세월이 지나서, 수아의 딸 유다의 아내가 죽었다. 곡을 하는 기간이 끝났을 때에, 유다는 친구 아둘람 사람 히라와 함께 자기 양들의 털을 깎으러 딤나로 올라갔다. 13 다말은 “너의 시아버지가 양털을 깎으러 딤나로 올라간다” 하는 말을 전해 듣고서, 14 과부의 옷을 벗고, 너울을 써서 얼굴을 가리고, 딤나로 가는 길에 있는 에나임 어귀에 앉았다. 그것은 막내아들 셀라가 이미 다 컸는데도, 유다가 자기와 셀라를 짝지어 주지 않았기 때문이다. 15 길을 가던 유다가 그를 보았지만, 얼굴을 가리고 있었으므로, 유다는 그가 창녀인 줄 알았다. 16 그래서 유다는 그가 자기 며느리인 줄도 모르고, 길가에 서 있는 그에게로 가서 말하였다. “너에게 잠시 들렀다 가마. 자, 들어가자.” 그 때에 그가 물었다. “저에게 들어오시는 값으로, 저에게 무엇을 주시겠습니까?” 17 유다가 말하였다. “나의 가축 떼에서 새끼 염소 한 마리를 보내마.” 그가 물었다. “그것을 보내실 때까지, 어떤 물건이든지 담보물을 주시겠습니까?” 18 유다가 물었다. “내가 너에게 어떤 담보물을 주랴?” 그가 대답하였다. “가지고 계신 도장과 허리끈과 가지고 다니시는 지팡이면 됩니다.” 그래서 유다는 그것들을 그에게 맡기고서 그에게 들어갔는데, 다말이 유다의 아이를 임신하게 되었다. 19 다말은 집으로 돌아와서, 너울을 벗고, 도로 과부의 옷을 입었다. 20 한편 유다는 자기 친구 아둘람 사람 편에 새끼 염소 한 마리를 보내고, 그 여인에게서 담보물을 찾아오게 하였으나, 그 친구가 그 여인을 찾지 못하였다. 21 그 친구는 거기에 사는 사람들에게, 에나임으로 가는 길 가에 서 있던 창녀가 어디에 있느냐고 물었다. 그러나 그들의 말이, 거기에는 창녀는 없다고 하였다. 22 그는 유다에게 돌아가서 말하였다. “그 여인을 찾지 못하였네. 그보다도, 거기에 사는 사람들이 그러는데, 거기에는 창녀가 없다고 하네.” 23 유다가 말하였다. “가질 테면 가지라지. 잘못하다가는 창피만 당하겠네. 어찌하였든지, 나는 새끼 염소 한 마리를 보냈는데, 다만 자네가 그 여인을 찾지 못한 것뿐일세.” 24 석 달쯤 지난 다음에, 유다는 자기의 며느리 다말이 창녀짓을 하여 임신까지 했다는 소문을 들었다. 유다가 명하였다. “그를 끌어내서 화형에 처하여라!” 25 그는 끌려 나오면서, 시아버지에게 전갈을 보냈다. “저는 이 물건 임자의 아이를 배었습니다” 하고 말하였다. 다말은 또 말을 계속하였다. “잘 살펴보십시오. 이 도장과 이 허리끈과 이 지팡이가 누구의 것입니까!” 26 유다는 그 물건들을 알아보았다. “그 아이가 나보다 옳다! 나의 아들 셀라를 그 아이와 결혼시켰어야 했는데” 하고 말하였다. 유다는 그 뒤로 다시는 그를 가까이하지 않았다. 27 다말이 몸을 풀 때가 되었는데, 태 안에는 쌍둥이가 들어 있었다. 28 아기를 막 낳으려고 하는데, 한 아기가 손을 내밀었다. 산파가 진홍색 실을 가져다가, 그 아이의 손목에 감고서 말하였다. “이 아이가 먼저 나온 녀석이다.” 29 그러나 그 아이는 손을 안으로 다시 끌어들였다. 그런 다음에 그의 아우가 먼저 나왔다. 산파가 “어찌하여 네가 터뜨리고 나오느냐!” 하고 말하였다. 그래서 이 아이 이름을 베레스라고 하고, 30 그의 형, 곧 진홍색 실로 손목이 묶인 아이가 뒤에 나오니, 아이 이름을 세라라고 하였다.
