[ Judges 21:13 - 21:25 ] (Hymn313)

13Then the whole congregation sent word to the people of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon and proclaimed peace to them.
14 And Benjamin returned at that time. And they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead, but they were not enough for them.
15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 Then the elders of the congregation said, “What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?”
17 And they said, “There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel.
18 Yet we cannot give them wives from our daughters.” For the people of Israel had sworn, “Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.”
19 So they said, “Behold, there is the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”
20 And they commanded the people of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in ambush in the vineyards
21 and watch. If the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and snatch each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.’”
23 And the people of Benjamin did so and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off. Then they went and returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and lived in them.
24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.
25 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

13그리고 나서 온 회중은 림몬 바위에 숨어서 사는 베냐민 자손에게 사람을 보내어 그들과 화친을 선언한다는 말을 전하였다.
14 그 때에 베냐민 자손이 돌아오니, 이스라엘 사람들은 길르앗의 야베스의 여자들 가운데서 살려둔 여자들을 그들과 결혼시켰다. 그러나 여자의 수가 모자랐다.
15 주님께서 이스라엘 지파들 가운데서 한 지파가 비어 틈이 생기게 하셨으므로, 이스라엘 백성은 베냐민 지파가 딱하다는 생각이 들었다.
16 그 때에 회중의 장로들이 걱정하였다. “베냐민 지파 가운데서 여자들이 다 죽었으니, 이제 우리가 어떻게 하여야 살아 남은 남자들에게 아내를 짝지어 줄 수 있겠습니까?”
17 그들이 또 말하였다. “베냐민 지파에서 살아 남은 남자들에게도 유산이 있어야, 이스라엘 가운데서 한 지파가 없어지지 않을 것입니다.
18 그러나 이미 이스라엘 자손이, 자기 딸을 베냐민 사람과 결혼시키는 사람은 누구든지 저주를 받을 것이라고 맹세하였으니, 우리는 아무도 우리의 딸들을 그들과 결혼시킬 수 없습니다.”
19 그래서 그들은 한 묘안을 생각해 냈다. “그렇다! 실로에서 해마다 열리는 주님의 축제가 곧 다가온다.” (실로는 베델 북쪽, 르보나 남쪽, 베델에서 세겜으로 올라가는 큰 길 동쪽에 있다.)
20 그리고 그들은 베냐민 자손에게 이렇게 지시하였다. “당신들은 가서 포도원에 숨어서
21 살피다가, 실로의 처녀들이 춤을 추러 나오면, 포도원에서 달려나와, 그 실로의 처녀들 가운데서 하나씩 붙들어 아내를 삼아, 베냐민 땅으로 돌아가시오.
22 그들의 아버지들이나 오라버니들이 우리에게 와서 시비를 걸면, 우리가 그들에게 ‘전쟁에서 여자를 잡아다가 아내로 삼듯 여자들을 빼앗아 온 것이 아니니, 딸들을 그들의 아내로 삼도록 하여 주시오. 또 당신들이 딸들을 그들에게 준 것이 아니니, 당신들이 맹세한 것을 스스로 깨뜨린 것도 아니오’ 하고 답변해 주겠소.”
23 그래서 베냐민 자손은 그 지시대로 하였다. 그들은, 춤추는 여자들 가운데서 자신들의 수효만큼 여자들을 붙들어 아내로 삼고, 자기들이 유산으로 얻은 땅으로 돌아가서, 성읍들을 재건하고, 거기에서 살았다.
24 그 때에야 이스라엘 자손도 그 곳을 떠나, 각자 자기 지파와 자기 가족에게로 돌아갔다. 곧 각자가 그 곳에서 떠나 자기가 유산으로 얻은 땅으로 돌아간 것이다.
25 그 때에는 이스라엘에 왕이 없었으므로, 사람들은 저마다 자기의 뜻에 맞는 대로 하였다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
The assembly of Israel made peace with the people of Benjamin and gave them the women of Jabesh-gilead so the Benjamin line could continue. However, there were not enough women, so the elders came up with another solution. They advised Benjamin to kidnap the virgins who came to the feast at Shiloh. While trying to keep their oath, they caused others to commit evil. In an era without kings, the people of Israel each lived according to their own will and gradually drifted further away from God’s will.
이스라엘 회중은 베냐민 자손과 화친을 맺고, 길르앗 야베스의 여자들과 결혼시켜 베냐민 지파가 이어지게 합니다. 그러나 여자의 수가 부족하자, 장로들은 또 다른 방법을 생각해 냅니다. 그들은 베냐민 자손에게 실로의 축제에 나온 처녀들을 납치해 아내로 삼으라고 조언합니다. 자기들의 맹세는 지키려 하면서도, 다른 사람에게 악행을 주선한 것입니다. 왕이 없던 시대, 저마다 자기 뜻에 맞는 대로 살던 이스라엘은 점점 더 주님의 뜻에서 멀어집니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 12-25 Even while looking for a way to preserve the tribe of Benjamin, Israel claimed they could not give their own daughters. They used their oath and curses as an excuse to avoid responsibility and tried to impose sacrifices on others. When our wrongdoing is clear, we must examine ourselves to see whether we are avoiding responsibility by using pious-sounding words.
이스라엘은 베냐민 지파를 살릴 방법을 찾으면서도, 자신들의 딸은 줄 수 없다고 말합니다. 그들은 맹세와 저주를 내세우며 책임을 피하고, 결국 또 다른 사람들에게 희생을 강요하려 합니다. 내 잘못이 분명할 때, 그럴듯한 신앙의 말로 책임을 피하고 있지는 않은지 돌아보아야 합니다.

19-24 To keep their oath of not giving their daughters as wives to the people of Benjamin, Israel came up with the bizarre solution of kidnapping women in Shiloh. Even while conspiring to commit another evil act during a holy feast, they considered themselves faithful to their oath. When faith is reduced to outward justification, we lose our ability to discern sin and grieve over it. We must examine ourselves to see if our faith has become reduced to clinging to formality and human reasoning.
이스라엘은 베냐민 지파와 혼인하지 않겠다는 맹세를 지키기 위해, 실로의 여인들을 납치하게 하는 해괴한 해결책을 냅니다. 거룩한 절기의 자리에서 또 다른 악행을 꾸미면서도, 그들은 이것이 맹세를 어기는 일이 아니라고 여깁니다. 명분만 남은 신앙은 죄에 대한 분별력과 아픔을 잃게 합니다. 내 신앙이 형식과 논리만 붙드는 모습은 아닌지 돌아보아야 합니다.

Lord, as you are the true king. Rule over me with your grace and truth so that I do not try to be king over my own life.
