1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 3 So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. 4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. 5 And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me!” 6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her. 7 The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.” 9 The angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel of the LORD also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” 11 And the angel of the LORD said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has listened to your affliction. 12 He shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.” 13 So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” 14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered. 15 And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
1아브람의 아내 사래는 아이를 낳지 못하였다. 그에게는 하갈이라고 하는 이집트 사람 여종이 있었다. 2 사래가 아브람에게 말하였다. “주님께서 나에게 아이를 가지지 못하게 하시니, 당신은 나의 여종과 동침하십시오. 하갈의 몸을 빌려서, 집안의 대를 이어갈 수 있기를 바랍니다.” 아브람은 사래의 말을 따랐다. 3 아브람의 아내 사래가 자기의 여종 이집트 사람 하갈을 데려다가 자기 남편 아브람에게 아내로 준 때는, 아브람이 가나안 땅에서 살아온 지 십 년이 지난 뒤이다. 4 아브람이 하갈과 동침하니, 하갈이 임신하였다. 하갈은 자기가 임신한 것을 알고서, 자기의 여주인을 깔보았다. 5 사래가 아브람에게 말하였다. “내가 받는 이 고통은, 당신이 책임을 지셔야 합니다. 나의 종을 당신 품에 안겨 주었더니, 그 종이 자기가 임신한 것을 알고서, 나를 멸시합니다. 주님께서 당신과 나 사이를 판단하여 주시면 좋겠습니다.” 6 아브람이 사래에게 말하였다. “여보, 당신의 종이니, 당신 마음대로 할 수 있지 않소? 당신이 좋을 대로 그에게 하기 바라오.” 사래가 하갈을 학대하니, 하갈이 사래 앞에서 도망하였다. 7 주님의 천사가 사막에 있는 샘 곁에서 하갈을 만났다. 그 샘은 수르로 가는 길 옆에 있다. 8 천사가 물었다. “사래의 종 하갈아, 네가 어디서 와서, 어디로 가는 길이냐?” 하갈이 대답하였다. “나의 여주인 사래에게서 도망하여 나오는 길입니다.” 9 주님의 천사가 그에게 말하였다. “너의 여주인에게로 돌아가서, 그에게 복종하면서 살아라.” 10 주님의 천사가 그에게 또 일렀다. “내가 너에게 많은 자손을 주겠다. 자손이 셀 수도 없을 만큼 불어나게 하겠다.” 11 주님의 천사가 그에게 또 일렀다. “너는 임신한 몸이다. 아들을 낳게 될 터이니, 그의 이름을 이스마엘이라고 하여라. 네가 고통 가운데서 부르짖는 소리를 주님께서 들으셨기 때문이다. 12 너의 아들은 들나귀처럼 될 것이다. 그는 모든 사람과 싸울 것이고, 모든 사람 또한 그와 싸울 것이다. 그는 자기의 모든 친족과 대결하며 살아가게 될 것이다.” 13 하갈은 “내가 여기에서 나를 보시는 하나님을 뵙고도, 이렇게 살아서, 겪은 일을 말할 수 있다니!” 하면서, 자기에게 말씀하신 주님을 “보시는 하나님”이라고 이름 지어서 불렀다. 14 그래서 그 샘 이름도 브엘라해로이라고 지어서 부르게 되었다. 그 샘은 지금도 가데스와 베렛 사이에 그대로 있다. 15 하갈과 아브람 사이에서 아들이 태어나니, 아브람은, 하갈이 낳은 그 아들의 이름을 이스마엘이라고 지었다. 16 하갈과 아브람 사이에 이스마엘이 태어날 때에, 아브람의 나이는 여든여섯이었다.
