23The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob's firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
25 The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's servant: Dan and Naphtali.
26 The sons of Zilpah, Leah's servant: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.
27 And Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.
28 Now the days of Isaac were180 years.
29 And Isaac breathed his last, and he died and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
1 These are the generations of Esau (that is, Edom).
2 Esau took his wives from the Canaanites: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, Oholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite,
3 and Basemath, Ishmael's daughter, the sister of Nebaioth.
4 And Adah bore to Esau, Eliphaz; Basemath bore Reuel;
5 and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.
6 Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his livestock, all his beasts, and all his property that he had acquired in the land of Canaan. He went into a land away from his brother Jacob.
7 For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together. The land of their sojournings could not support them because of their livestock.
8 So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir. (Esau is Edom.)

야곱의 아들은 열둘이다.
23 레아에게서 얻은 아들은 야곱의 맏아들 르우벤과 시므온과 레위와 유다와 잇사갈과 스불론이다.
24 라헬에게서 얻은 아들은, 요셉과 베냐민이다.
25 라헬의 몸종 빌하에게서 얻은 아들은 단과 납달리이다.
26 레아의 몸종 실바에게서 얻은 아들은 갓과 아셀이다. 이들은 모두 야곱이 밧단아람에서 얻은 아들들이다.
27 야곱이 기럇아르바 근처 마므레로 가서, 자기 아버지 이삭에게 이르렀다. 기럇아르바는 아브라함과 이삭이 살던 헤브론이다.
28 이삭의 나이는 백여든 살이었다.
29 이삭은 늙고, 나이가 들어서, 목숨이 다하자, 죽어서 조상들 곁으로 갔다. 아들 에서와 야곱이 그를 안장하였다.
36 :1에서 곧 에돔의 족보는 다음과 같다.
2 에서는 가나안 여인 세 사람을 아내로 맞아들였다. 아다는 헷 사람 엘론의 딸이다. 오홀리바마는 히위 사람 시브온의 딸 아나에게서 태어났다.
3 바스맛은 이스마엘의 딸이며, 느바욧의 누이이다.
4 아다는 엘리바스를 낳고, 바스맛은 르우엘을 낳고,
5 오홀리바마는 여우스와 얄람과 고라를 낳았다. 이들은 에서의 아들인데, 에서가 가나안 땅에서 얻은 아들들이다.
6 에서는 아내들과 아들들과 딸들과 자기 집의 모든 사람과 집짐승과 또 다른 모든 짐승과 가나안 땅에서 얻은 모든 재산을 이끌고, 아우 야곱과는 좀 떨어진 다른 곳으로 갔다.
7 두 사람은 재산이 너무 많아서, 함께 살 수 없었다. 그들은 특히 집짐승이 많아서, 거기에서 그대로 살 수 없었다.
8 그래서 에서 곧 에돔은 세일 산에 자리를 잡았다.

Thinking & Understanding
Jacob’s twelve sons are introduced. Although they were born out of a competition between Leah and Rachel, God used this to multiply their descendants in accordance with his promise. Jacob reached Mamre in Hebron, where his father, Isaac, dwelt, and resolved his conflict with Esau. Then, they buried their father together (28:14; 35:23-29). The genealogy of Edom is recorded. Esau went against God’s will and married a Canaanite woman. He settled in Seir away from Jacob because they had too many possessions to dwell in the same land. On the one hand, he was conceding for the sake of his younger brother. But it also showed how lightly he regarded the Promised Land (36:1-8).
야곱이 낳은 열두 아들이 소개됩니다. 레아와 라헬의 경쟁 속에서 태어났지만 이를 통해 하나님은 약속대로 자녀를 번성시키셨습니다. 야곱은 이삭이 거하던 헤브론의 마므레에 이르고, 이후 에서와의 갈등을 풉니다. 그리고 함께 아버지 이삭을 장사합니다(28:14; 35:23–29). 이어 에돔의 족보가 제시되며, 에서는 아브라함의 뜻과 달리 가나안 여인들을 아내로 맞고, 재산이 많아 야곱과 함께 거할 수 없게 되자 세일산으로 옮깁니다. 이는 형으로서의 양보로 볼 수 있지만, 하나님이 약속하신 땅을 중요하게 여기지 않았음을 보여 줍니다(36:1–8).

Who is God?
35:23-26; 36:6-8 Behind our lives and all events is the hand of God, who works to accomplish his will. God used Leah and Rachel’s competition to fulfil his promise to multiply Jacob’s descendants. By making Esau move to a different land due to an abundance of wealth, God made Jacob inherit the land of Canaan. Just as he guided Jacob with his invisible hand, God continues to accomplish his will in our lives today.
인생과 역사의 배후에서 뜻하신 바를 이루어 가십니다. 레아와 라헬의 경쟁 속에서도 자손을 번성하게 하겠다는 약속을 이루셨고, 에서가 재산 문제로 거처를 옮기게 하심으로 가나안 땅은 야곱의 유산이 되었습니다. 야곱의 삶을 보이지 않는 곳에서 이끄신 하나님은 오늘도 우리의 삶 뒤에서 자신의 뜻을 이루고 계십니다.

What lesson is God teaching me?
36:1-8 Although Esau reconciled with Jacob, he did not dwell with him. Instead of inheriting God’s promise with Jacob, he chose to expand his family in abundant pastures. Esau was Abraham’s descendant and Isaac’s oldest son, but he fell away from God’s promise by marrying a Canaanite woman and departing from the Promised Land. We cannot enjoy a life obedient to God’s promise and enjoy a worldly life at the same time.
에서는 야곱과 화해했지만 함께 거주하지 않습니다. 야곱과 함께 약속을 상속하는 편보다 풍성한 목초지에서 자신의 일가를 이루는 편을 택합니다. 에서는 아브라함의 후손이며 이삭의 맏아들이지만, 가나안 여인을 아내로 맞이하고 약속의 땅을 떠남으로 약속의 복에서 멀어졌습니다. 약속을 따르는 삶과 세상에 속한 삶을 동시에 누릴 수 없습니다.
