5Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger; the staff in their hands is my fury! 6 Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 7 But he does not so intend, and his heart does not so think; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few; 8 for he says: “Are not my commanders all kings? 9 Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? 10 As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria, 11 shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her images?” 12 When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes. 13 For he says: “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I remove the boundaries of peoples, and plunder their treasures; like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones. 14 My hand has found like a nest the wealth of the peoples; and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken, so I have gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved a wing or opened the mouth or chirped.” 15 Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood! 16 Therefore the Lord GOD of hosts will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors, and under his glory a burning will be kindled, like the burning of fire. 17 The light of Israel will become a fire, and his Holy One a flame, and it will burn and devour his thorns and briers in one day. 18 The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land the LORD will destroy, both soul and body, and it will be as when a sick man wastes away. 19 The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few that a child can write them down.
5앗시리아에게 재앙이 닥쳐라! 그는 나의 진노의 몽둥이요, 그의 손에 있는 몽둥이는 바로 나의 분노다. 6 내가 그를 경건하지 않은 민족에게 보내며, 그에게 명하여 나를 분노하게 한 백성을 치게 하며 그들을 닥치는 대로 노략하고 약탈하게 하며, 거리의 진흙같이 짓밟도록 하였다. 7 앗시리아 왕은 그렇게 할 뜻이 없었고, 마음에 그럴 생각도 품지 않았다. 오직 그의 마음속에는, ‘어떻게 하면 많은 민족들을 파괴하고, 어떻게 하면 그들을 멸망하게 할까’ 하는 생각뿐이었다. 8 그는 이런 말도 하였다. “나의 지휘관들은 어디다 내놓아도 다 왕이 될 수 있는 사람들이 아니냐? 9 갈로는 갈그미스처럼 망하지 않았느냐? 하맛도 아르밧처럼 망하지 않았느냐? 사마리아도 다마스쿠스처럼 망하지 않았느냐? 10 내가 이미 우상을 섬기는 나라들을 장악하였다. 예루살렘과 사마리아가 가진 우상보다 더 많은 우상을 섬기는 왕국들을 장악하였다. 11 내가 사마리아와 그 조각한 우상들을 손에 넣었거늘, 예루살렘과 그 우상들을 그렇게 하지 못하겠느냐?” 12 그러므로 주님께서 시온 산과 예루살렘에서 하실 일을 다 이루시고 말씀하실 것이다. “내가 앗시리아 왕을 벌하겠다. 멋대로 거드름을 피우며, 모든 사람을 업신여기는 그 교만을 벌하겠다.” 13 그는 말한다. “내가 민족들의 경계선을 옮겼고, 그들의 재물도 탈취하였으며, 용맹스럽게 주민을 진압하였다. 나는 내 손의 힘과 내 지혜로 이것을 하였다. 참으로 나는 현명한 사람이다. 14 내 손이 민족들의 재물을 새의 보금자리를 움키듯 움켰고, 온 땅을 버려진 알들을 모으듯 차지하였으나, 날개를 치거나, 입을 벌리거나, 소리를 내는 자가 없었다.” 15 도끼가 어찌 찍는 사람에게 뽐내며, 톱이 어찌 켜는 사람에게 으스대겠느냐? 이것은 마치 막대기가 막대기를 잡은 사람을 움직이려 하고, 몽둥이가 나무 아닌 사람을 들어 올리려 하는 것과 같지 않으냐! 16 그러므로 만군의 주 하나님께서 질병을 보내어 살진 자들을 파리하게 하실 것이다. 생사람의 가슴에 불을 질러 화병에 걸려 죽게 하실 것이다. 그의 재물은 화염 속에 태워 버리실 것이다. 17 이스라엘의 빛은 불이 되며 ‘이스라엘의 거룩하신 분’은 불꽃이 되셔서, 가시나무와 찔레나무를 하루에 태워서 사르실 것이다. 18 그 울창한 숲과 기름진 옥토를 모조리 태워서, 폐허로 만드실 것이다. 마치 병자가 기력을 잃는 것과 같게 하실 것이다. 19 숲 속에는 겨우 몇 그루의 나무만 남아서, 어린아이도 그 수를 기록할 수 있을 것이다.
