1Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh, 3 that I may make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, 4 but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” 5 The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?” 6 Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there. 7 The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. 8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.” 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter. 10 Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose and went to Mesopotamia to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time when women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Let the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.” 15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder. 16 The young woman was very attractive in appearance, a maiden whom no man had known. She went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” 18 She said, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink. 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water, and she drew for all his camels. 21 The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the LORD had prospered his journey or not. 22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel, and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels, 23 and said, “Please tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?” 24 She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 She added, “We have plenty of both straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.” 26 The man bowed his head and worshiped the LORD 27 and said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master. As for me, the LORD has led me in the way to the house of my master's kinsmen.”
1아브라함은 이제 나이가 많은 노인이 되었다. 주님께서는, 아브라함이 하는 일마다 복을 주셨다. 2 아브라함이 자기 집 모든 소유를 맡아 보는 늙은 종에게 말하였다. “너의 손을 나의 다리 사이에 넣어라. 3 나는 네가, 하늘의 하나님, 땅의 하나님이신 주님을 두고서 맹세하기를 바란다. 너는 나의 아들의 아내가 될 여인을, 내가 살고 있는 이 곳 가나안 사람의 딸들에게서 찾지 말고, 4 나의 고향, 나의 친척이 사는 곳으로 가서, 거기에서 나의 아들 이삭의 아내 될 사람을 찾겠다고 나에게 맹세하여라.” 5 그 종이 아브라함에게 물었다. “며느님이 되실 여인이 저를 따라오지 않겠다고 거절하면, 어떻게 해야 합니까? 제가 주인어른의 아드님을 데리고, 주인께서 나오신 그 고향으로 가야 합니까?” 6 아브라함이 그에게 말하였다. “절대로 나의 아들을 그리로 데리고 가지 말아라. 7 주 하늘의 하나님이 나를 나의 아버지 집, 내가 태어난 땅에서 떠나게 하시고, 나에게 말씀하시며, 나에게 맹세하여 이르시기를 ‘내가 이 땅을 너의 씨에게 주겠다’ 하셨다. 그러니 주님께서 천사를 너의 앞에 보내셔서, 거기에서 내 아들의 아내 될 사람을 데려올 수 있도록 도와주실 것이다. 8 그 여인이 너를 따라오려고 하지 않으면, 너는 나에게 한 이 맹세에서 풀려난다. 다만 나의 아들을 그리로 데리고 가지만은 말아라.” 9 그래서 그 종은 손을 주인 아브라함의 다리 사이에 넣고, 이 일을 두고 그에게 맹세하였다. 10 그 종은 주인의 낙타 가운데서 열 마리를 풀어서, 주인이 준 온갖 좋은 선물을 낙타에 싣고 길을 떠나서, 아람나하라임을 거쳐서, 나홀이 사는 성에 이르렀다. 11 그는 낙타를 성 바깥에 있는 우물곁에서 쉬게 하였다. 해가 뉘엿뉘엿 지고 있었다. 여인들이 물을 길으러 나오는 때였다. 12 그는 기도하였다. “주님, 나의 주인 아브라함을 보살펴 주신 하나님, 오늘 일이 잘 되게 하여 주십시오. 나의 주인 아브라함에게 은총을 베풀어 주십시오. 13 제가 여기 우물곁에 서 있다가, 마을 사람의 딸들이 물을 길으러 나오면, 14 제가 그 가운데서 한 소녀에게 ‘물동이를 기울여서, 물을 한 모금 마실 수 있게 하여 달라’ 하겠습니다. 그 때에 그 소녀가 ‘드십시오. 낙타들에게도 제가 물을 주겠습니다’ 하고 말하면, 그가 바로 주님께서 주님의 종 이삭의 아내로 정하신 여인인 줄로 알겠습니다. 이것으로써 주님께서 저의 주인에게 은총을 베푸신 줄을 알겠습니다.” 15 기도를 미처 마치기도 전에, 리브가가 물동이를 어깨에 메고 나왔다. 그의 아버지는 브두엘이고, 할머니는 밀가이다. 밀가는 아브라함의 동생 나홀의 아내로서, 아브라함에게는 제수뻘이 되는 사람이다. 16 그 소녀는 매우 아리땁고, 지금까지 어떤 남자도 가까이하지 아니한 처녀였다. 그 소녀가 우물로 내려가서, 물동이에 물을 채워 가지고 올라올 때에, 17 그 종이 달려 나가서, 그 소녀를 마주 보고 말하였다. “이 물동이에 든 물을 좀 마시게 해주시오.” 18 그렇게 하니, 리브가가 “할아버지, 드십시오” 하면서, 급히 물동이를 내려, 손에 받쳐 들고서, 그 노인에게 마시게 하였다. 19 소녀는 이렇게 물을 마시게 하고 나서, “제가 물을 더 길어다가, 낙타들에게도, 실컷 마시게 하겠습니다” 하고 말하면서, 20 물동이에 남은 물을 곧 구유에 붓고, 다시 우물로 달려가서, 더 많은 물을 길어 왔다. 그 처녀는, 노인이 끌고 온 모든 낙타들에게 먹일 수 있을 만큼, 물을 넉넉히 길어다 주었다. 21 그렇게 하는 동안에 노인은, 이번 여행길에서 주님께서 모든 일을 과연 잘 되게 하여 주시는 것인지를 알려고, 그 소녀를 말없이 지켜보고 있었다. 22 낙타들이 물 마시기를 그치니, 노인은, 반 세겔 나가는 금 코걸이 하나와 십 세겔 나가는 금팔찌 두 개를 소녀에게 주면서 23 물었다. “아가씨는 뉘 댁 따님이시오? 아버지 집에, 우리가 하룻밤 묵어갈 수 있는 방이 있겠소?” 24 소녀가 노인에게 대답하였다. “저의 아버지는 함자가 브두엘이고, 할머니는 함자가 밀가이고, 할아버지는 함자가 나홀입니다.” 25 소녀는 말을 계속하였다. “우리 집에는, 겨와 여물도 넉넉하고, 하룻밤 묵고 가실 수 있는 방도 있습니다.” 26 일이 이쯤 되니, 아브라함의 종은 머리를 숙여서 주님께 경배하고 27 “나의 주인 아브라함을 보살펴 주신 하나님, 주님을 찬양합니다. 나의 주인에게 주님의 인자와 성실을 끊지 않으셨으며, 주님께서 저의 길을 잘 인도하여 주셔서, 나의 주인의 동생 집에 무사히 이르게 하셨습니다” 하고 찬양하였다.
