16“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
16“조금 있으면 너희는 나를 보지 못할 것이다. 그러나 또 조금 있으면 나를 볼 것이다.” 17 그의 제자 가운데서 몇몇이 서로 말하였다. “그가 우리에게 ‘조금 있으면 나를 보지 못하게 되고, 또 조금 있으면 나를 볼 것이다’ 하신 말씀이나, ‘내가 아버지께로 가기 때문에’라고 하신 말씀은 무슨 뜻일까?” 18 그들은 말하기를 “도대체 ‘조금 있으면’이라는 말씀이 무슨 뜻일까? 우리는, 그가 무엇을 말씀하시는지 모르겠다” 하였다. 19 예수께서는, 제자들이 자기에게 물어 보고 싶어하는 마음을 아시고, 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “내가, ‘조금 있으면, 너희가 나를 보지 못하게 되고, 또 조금 있으면 나를 볼 것이다’ 한 말을 가지고 서로 논의하고 있느냐? 20 내가 진정으로 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 너희는 울며 애통하겠으나, 세상은 기뻐할 것이다. 그러나 너희가 근심에 싸여도, 그 근심이 기쁨으로 변할 것이다. 21 여자가 해산할 때에는 근심에 잠긴다. 진통할 때가 왔기 때문이다. 그러나 아이를 낳으면, 사람이 세상에 태어났다는 기쁨 때문에, 그 고통을 더 이상 기억하지 않는다. 22 이와 같이, 지금 너희가 근심에 싸여 있지만, 내가 다시 너희를 볼 때에는, 너희의 마음이 기쁠 것이며, 그 기쁨을 너희에게서 빼앗을 사람이 없을 것이다. 23 그 날에는 너희가 나에게 아무것도 묻지 않을 것이다. 내가 진정으로 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 아버지께 구하는 것은, 무엇이나 아버지께서 내 이름으로 주실 것이다. 24 지금까지는 너희가 아무것도 내 이름으로 구하지 않았다. 구하여라. 그러면 받을 것이다. 그래서 너희의 기쁨이 넘치게 될 것이다.”
