60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”
61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?
62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)
65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”
66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,
69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”
71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

60예수의 제자들 가운데서 여럿이 이 말씀을 듣고 말하기를 “이 말씀이 이렇게 어려우니 누가 알아들을 수 있겠는가?” 하였다.
61 예수께서, 제자들이 자기의 말을 두고 수군거리는 것을 아시고, 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “이 말이 너희의 마음에 걸리느냐?
62 인자가 전에 있던 곳으로 올라가는 것을 보면, 어떻게 하겠느냐?
63 생명을 주는 것은 영이다. 육은 아무 데도 소용이 없다. 내가 너희에게 한 이 말은 영이요 생명이다.
64 그러나 너희 가운데는 믿지 않는 사람들이 있다.” 처음부터 예수께서는, 믿지 않는 사람이 누구이며, 자기를 넘겨줄 사람이 누구인지를, 알고 계셨던 것이다.
65 예수께서 또 말씀하셨다. “그러므로 내가 너희에게 이르기를, 아버지께서 허락하여 주신 사람이 아니고는 아무도 나에게로 올 수 없다고 말한 것이다.”
66 이 때문에 제자 가운데서 많은 사람이 떠나갔고, 더 이상 그와 함께 다니지 않았다.
67 예수께서 열두 제자에게 물으셨다. “너희까지도 떠나가려 하느냐?”
68 시몬 베드로가 대답하였다. “주님, 우리가 누구에게로 가겠습니까? 선생님께는 영생의 말씀이 있습니다.
69 우리는, 선생님이 하나님의 거룩한 분이심을 믿고, 또 알았습니다.”
70 예수께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “내가 너희 열둘을 택하지 않았느냐? 그러나 너희 가운데서 하나는 악마이다.”
71 이것은 시몬 가룟의 아들 유다를 가리켜서 하신 말씀인데, 그는 열두 제자 가운데 한 사람으로, 예수를 넘겨줄 사람이었다.

Who is God like?

Thinking & Understanding
After Jesus spoke about eating his flesh and drinking his blood, the crowd and even some of his disciples were confused. Jesus explained that his teaching was spiritual, but some were thinking only in terms of physical terms, which is why they could not believe. As a result, many disciples turned back and left him. When Jesus asked the Twelve, ‘Do you want to go away as well?’, Peter responded, saying it was unthinkable. He confessed, ‘You have the words of eternal life,’ and declared, ‘You are the Holy One of God.’ Yet Jesus already knew that one among the twelve would betray him: Judas Iscariot (vv. 60–71).
예수님이 자신의 살과 피를 먹으라 하신 말씀은 군중과 제자들까지 혼란스럽게 했습니다. 예수님은 이 가르침이 영에 관한 것임에도 육신만 생각하며 믿지 않는 자들이 있다고 하셨습니다. 결국 많은 제자가 주님을 떠났고, 예수님이 “너희도 가려느냐?” 물으시자, 베드로는 “영생의 말씀이 주께 있고 주님은 하나님의 거룩하신 이”라 고백했습니다. 그러나 열두 제자 중에도 배반할 자, 곧 가룟 유다가 있었음을 예수님은 이미 알고 계셨습니다(60–71절).

What lesson is God teaching me?
Vv. 60-63 Faith is acceptance of spiritual truth. Those who were satisfied with the bread and fish did not believe in the greater, heavenly works (spiritual truths) Jesus would do, nor did they seek the food that gives life to the spirit. But we know that it is not the flesh that gives life, but the Spirit. Therefore, do not live chasing only the things of the flesh. Instead, be a disciple of Christ, devoted to the spiritual works that fulfils God’s will.
믿음은 영적인 일을 받아들이는 것입니다. 빵을 먹고 배부른 사람들은 예수님이 하실 하늘의 일(영적인 일)을 믿지 못했고, 영의 양식을 구하지도 않았습니다. 그러나 생명을 주는 것은 육이 아니라 영입니다. 육신의 일만 구하며 살지 말고, 하나님의 뜻을 이루는 영적인 일에 헌신하는 제자가 되십시오.

Vv. 66-71 Many followed Jesus after witnessing his miracles, yet few remained as his disciples to the end. Some departed because they did not understand his teachings; others left because they were unwilling to walk the path of suffering. Faith means believing that Jesus is the Bread of Life, and following him is the way to eternal life. Without this faith, it is impossible to complete the journey of faith through the wilderness.
예수님의 이적을 보고 따른 사람은 많았지만, 끝까지 제자로 남은 사람은 적었습니다. 예수님의 교훈을 이해하지 못해 떠나고, 고난의 길을 받아들일 수 없어 떠나기도 했습니다. 신앙은 예수님이 생명의 빵이고, 예수님을 따르는 삶이 영생을 얻는 길임을 믿는 것입니다. 이 믿음 없이는 광야 같은 신앙의 여정을 결코 완주할 수 없습니다.

Dear God, grant us the wisdom and knowledge to comprehend your Word and the steadfast faith to obey it to the end.
