[ Genesis 44:18 - 44:34 ] (Hymn455)

18Then Judah went up to him and said, “Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself.
19 My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’
20 And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother's children, and his father loves him.’
21 Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’
22 We said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’
23 Then you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.’
24 “When we went back to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
25 And when our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food,’
26 we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down. For we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.’
27 Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.
28 One left me, and I said, “Surely he has been torn to pieces,” and I have never seen him since.
29 If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs in evil to Sheol.’
30 “Now therefore, as soon as I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the boy's life,
31 as soon as he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.
32 For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.’
33 Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers.
34 For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would find my father.”

18유다가 그에게 가까이 가서 간청하였다. “이 종이 주인어른께 감히 한 말씀 드리는 것을 용서하여 주시기 바랍니다. 어른께서는 바로와 꼭 같은 분이시니, 이 종에게 너무 노여워하지 마시기 바랍니다.
19 이전에 어른께서는 종들에게, 아버지나 아우가 있느냐고 물으셨습니다.
20 그 때에 종들은, 늙은 아버지가 있고, 그가 늘그막에 얻은 아들 하나가 있는데, 그 아이와 한 어머니에게서 난 그의 친형은 죽고, 그 아이만 있기 때문에, 아버지가 그 아이를 무척이나 사랑한다고 말씀드렸습니다.
21 그 때에 어른께서는 종들에게 말씀하시기를, 어른께서 그 아이를 직접 만나보시겠다고, 데리고 오라고 하셨습니다.
22 그래서 종들이 어른께, 그 아이는 제 아버지를 떠날 수 없으며, 그 아이가 아버지 곁을 떠나면, 아버지가 돌아가실 것이라고 말씀드렸습니다.
23 그러나 어른께서는 이 종들에게, 그 막내아우를 데리고 오지 않으면 어른의 얼굴을 다시는 못 볼 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.
24 그래서 종들은 어른의 종인 저의 아버지에게 가서, 어른께서 하신 말씀을 다 전하였습니다.
25 얼마 뒤에 종들의 아버지가 종들에게, 다시 가서 먹거리를 조금 사오라고 하였습니다만,
26 종들은, 막내아우를 우리와 함께 보내시면 가겠지만, 그렇지 않으면 갈 수도 없고 그분 얼굴을 뵐 수도 없다고 말했습니다.
27 그러나 어른의 종인 소인의 아버지는 이 종들에게 ‘너희도 알지 않느냐? 이 아이의 어머니가 낳은 자식이 둘뿐인데,
28 한 아이는 나가더니, 돌아오지 않는다. 사나운 짐승에게 변을 당한 것이 틀림없다. 그 뒤로 나는 그 아이를 볼 수 없다.
29 그런데 너희가 이 아이마저 나에게서 데리고 갔다가, 이 아이마저 변을 당하기라도 하면, 어찌하겠느냐? 너희는, 백발이 성성한 이 늙은 아버지가, 슬퍼하며 죽어가는 꼴을 보겠다는 거냐?’ 하고 걱정하였습니다.
30 아버지의 목숨과 이 아이의 목숨이 이렇게 얽혀 있습니다. 소인이 어른의 종, 저의 아버지에게 되돌아갈 때에, 우리가 이 아이를 데리고 가지 못하거나,
31 소인의 아버지가 이 아이가 없는 것을 알면, 소인의 아버지는 곧바로 숨이 넘어가고 말 것입니다. 일이 이렇게 되면, 어른의 종들은 결국, 백발이 성성한 아버지를 슬퍼하며 돌아가시도록 만든 꼴이 되고 맙니다.
32 어른의 종인 제가 소인의 아버지에게, 그 아이를 안전하게 다시 데리고 오겠다는 책임을 지고 나섰습니다. 만일 이 아이를 아버지에게 다시 데리고 돌아가지 못하면, 소인이 아버지 앞에서 평생 그 죄를 달게 받겠다고 다짐하고 왔습니다.
33 그러니, 저 아이 대신에 소인을 주인어른의 종으로 삼아 여기에 머물러 있게 해주시고, 저 아이는 그의 형들과 함께 돌려보내 주시기를 바랍니다.
34 저 아이 없이, 제가 어떻게 아버지의 얼굴을 뵙겠습니까? 그럴 수는 없습니다. 저의 아버지에게 닥칠 불행을, 제가 차마 볼 수 없습니다.”

Thinking & Understanding
Joseph declared that he would only keep Benjamin as his servant and commanded the rest of his brothers to return to their homeland. Judah responded by stepping forward and pleading at the risk of his life. He explained how precious Benjamin was to their father, Jacob, especially since his only other son by his beloved wife Rachel was dead. He emphasised that his father, who was now old, would not survive the grief if they did not return with Benjamin. Then, he went a step further and begged to remain as a servant in Benjamin’s place so that Benjamin could be sent back to their father (vv. 18-34).
요셉이 베냐민만 종으로 삼고 나머지는 고향으로 돌아가라 하자, 유다는 위험을 무릅쓰고 앞으로 나아가 간청합니다. 그는 베냐민이 아버지 야곱에게 얼마나 특별한 아들인지 설명하며, 사랑하던 아내 라헬에게서 얻은 두 아들 중 형이 죽고 홀로 남은 베냐민을 야곱이 각별히 아낀다고 말합니다. 만약 베냐민을 데려가지 못하면 늙은 아버지가 슬픔을 이기지 못할 것이라 호소합니다. 더 나아가 유다는 자신을 종으로 삼고 베냐민을 아버지께 보내 달라고 부탁합니다(18–34절).

What lesson is God teaching me?
VV. 27-29 Joseph confirmed that he had not been forgotten by his father. Even though he had endured many years of suffering in a foreign land, he learned that his brothers, who had abandoned him, and his father had also endured great pain and hurt. To his older brothers, Benjamin was a reminder of the brother they had thrown into a pit, and to Jacob, he was a reminder of the son who had been torn apart by wild beasts. In this way, the resentment and suffering of loss in Jacob’s household, which began with Joseph, began to be restored through Benjamin.
요셉은 자신이 잊힌 아들이 아님을 확인합니다. 먼 이방에서 오랜 고통의 시간을 보냈지만, 그를 버린 형제들과 아버지 역시 깊은 아픔을 겪었음을 짐작하게 됩니다. 지금 형제들에게 베냐민은 구덩이에 던졌던 요셉이고, 야곱에게는 맹수에 찢긴 아들과 같습니다. 이처럼 요셉으로 시작된 야곱 가족의 미움과 상실의 고통이 베냐민을 중심으로 회복되기 시작합니다.

VV. 32-34 Judah demonstrated a noble willingness to sacrifice himself and brotherly love. By acting as an intercessor in this way, Judah would eventually become the spiritual firstborn of the house of Israel (49:8-12), and Jesus Christ, who sacrificed himself for all mankind, would be among his descendants. Likewise, when we make a sacrifice for the sake of someone else, God accomplishes amazing things through that sacrifice.
유다는 고결한 희생정신과 형제애를 보여 줍니다. 이러한 중보자의 모습으로 유다는 훗날 이스라엘 가문을 이끄는 영적 장자가 되었고(49:8–12), 그 후손으로 온 인류를 위해 자신을 희생하신 예수 그리스도가 오셨습니다. 우리 또한 누군가를 위해 희생을 결단할 때, 하나님은 그 희생을 통해 놀라운 일을 이루십니다.

Lord, help me to love like Jesus, who sacrificed himself to give me life.
